CBS has handed a straight-to-series order to Watson, from writer Craig Sweeny (Elementary), Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and CBS Studios, for the 2024-25 broadcast season. Morris Chestnut is set to play the title role and executive produce the medical drama inspired by the characters from Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes mysteries.
Last January, CBS ordered two drama pilots, Elsbeth starring Carrie Preston and Matlock starring Kathy Bates, as well as writers rooms for two medical drama projects, Watson and The Pact.
In anticipation of a series pickup, CBS and CBS Studios recently attached Chestnut as the lead and Larry Teng as director and executive producer of the first episode, paving the way to a formal greenlight.

Exclusive: Tony winner Adrienne Warren is set to star in and executive produce Dreamland, a period drama series in development at Peacock from Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.
Written and executive produced by Eric Haywood (Law & Order: Organized Crime), Dreamland explores the world of Black Wall Street, the legendary African-American business district in Tulsa, Oklahoma’s segregated Greenwood community. Set in 1915, the series avoids depicting the well-known deadly massacre that took place several years later. Instead, it explores the daily lives, interpersonal relationships, and class struggles of Greenwood’s residents — all taking place in the shadow of an oil boom that ignited long-standing tensions between the city’s white, African-American, and displaced Native American populations.

“I’m not acting,” Benny replies. “Ma’s dead.”
“Read the will, please,” is all Byron says in return.

A Million Little Things‘ upcoming fifth season is expected to be the final one for ABC’s serialized ensemble drama. While that has been an open secret, the network is yet to confirm it. That may change soon.
“Stay tuned in the next few weeks for discussion of that and our other midseason shows,” Simran Sethi, EVP, Programming and Content Strategy, ABC Entertainment, told Deadline.

Exclusive: Sidekick no more. CBS is going for a fresh take on Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic mystery franchise with Watson, from Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and CBS Studios. The medical drama with detective elements, in development at the broadcast network, is written by Craig Sweeny, who spent five years on CBS’ Sherlock Holmes/Dr. Watson procedural Elementary, most of them as executive producer.
In Watson, a year after the death of his friend and partner Sherlock Holmes at the hands of Moriarty, Dr. John Watson resumes his medical career as the head of a clinic dedicated to treating rare disorders. Watson’s old life isn’t done with him, though — Moriarty and Watson are set to write their own chapter of a story that has fascinated audiences for more than a century. When A Million Little Things in May scored an eleventh-hour renewal, Deadline reported that Season 5 was expected to be the final one for the serialized ensemble drama. The network did not confirm it at the time and has yet to acknowledge that Amlt will be ending this coming season, but that remains very much the case.
While ABC has been trying to keep things open — as we reported, the network had asked the Amlt creative team not to write the Season 4 finale as a series finale — the series producers accepted the Season 5 pickup with the presumption that it was going to be the show’s final chapter. That is how the season has been conceived and remains on course as a final chapter that is slated to premiere in 2023.

ABC has picked up ensemble drama A Million Little Things for a fifth season. The network is not labeling Season 5 as final, but I hear it is expected to be the closing chapter of the DJ Nash-created series.
It came down to the wire for A Million Little Things, whose core cast includes David Giuntoli, Romany Malco, Allison Miller, Christina Moses, Grace Park and James Roday Rodriguez. Like is the case with most bubble show renewals these days, the pickup came after difficult license fee negotiations as networks are pushing down on what they pay for moderate performers amid sliding linear ratings.

Disney Television Studios mounted a panel Thursday at the TCA press tour entitled “Inclusion is Not A Spectator Sport” — a panel on which five of the participants were white and two were Black. According to Tim McNeal, vice president, creative talent development and inclusion and Dma (Donna Michelle Anderson), director, creative talent development and inclusion at Walt Disney Television, that structure was intentional.
“Because these panelists represent decision-makers, producers and executives, a majority of whom are still white, who have the ability and accountability to significantly change mindsets and practices,” McNeal said.
The panel also featured Alexi Hawley, executive producer and writer, “The Rookie”; Brian Morewitz, senior VP, drama development, ABC; Carol Turner, executive VP, production, ABC Signature; Jonathan Groff, consulting producer, “Black-ish”; David Renaud, producer, “The Good Doctor.” Both McNeal and Dma spoke to why Hawley, Morewitz, Groff and Renaud, all white men, and Turner, a white woman, were...

During TCA, Walt Disney Television hosted a session titled, “Inclusion Is Not A Spectator Sport”. Diversity and inclusion has been a conversation to be had on all fronts when it comes to authentic representation on film and TV. It’s a conversation that has always been on the mind of people of color, the LGBTQ+ community, the disabled community as well as other underrepresented voices. However, after the death of George Floyd, a pandemic that made Asians a target of violent attacks, and a Black Lives Matter movement that changed the face of the landscape of social justice, the conversation of inclusion has become more prominent and a glaring light is being shined on Hollywood to do the work instead of just virtue signal their efforts.
The session included Tim McNeal, VP, Creative Talent Development & Inclusion, Wdt; Dma, Director, Creative Talent Development & Inclusion, Wdt; Alexi Hawley, Executive Producer and writer,...

Diversity and inclusion remains a hot button topic in entertainment, and during the network’s virtual TCA Winter 2021 Press Tour on Thursday, executives across ABC discussed ways the network is trying to improve the inclusivity of the stories it tells.
As a recent DGA report revealed, the there’s still work to be done to enhance opportunities for directors of color. There is additionally an acknowledgement that much of the critical leadership in entertainment is white and male and the desire to put this panel together ran off of that.
The hope is to move the conversation away from asking the talent about diversity initiatives and look at the leadership. “Inclusivity is to create one level playing field for everyone,” said Tim McNeal, the Vice President of Creative Talent Development and inclusion for Walt Disney Television at the network’s TCA panel on the subject. There’s an acknowledgement that the majority of decision makers,...

From the opening number to the final Emmy being handed out to “Game of Thrones,” there was a lot to take in throughout the three-hour telecast.
But there was plenty going on at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles that the cameras didn’t catch. Here’s everything you didn’t see on TV:
If you’re not in the theater when the show starts, you’re not allowed in until the first commercial break. Just ask Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons, who were among the few dozen people who had to wait it out in the lobby before ushers opened the doors again. Also stuck outside was “Glow” writer and producer Sascha Rothchild. One couple pulled up the show on their iPhone so their young son could watch the opening.
Commercial breaks meant mad dashes to concession stands, where lines of people appeared to be a mile-long. “All I ate today were egg whites,...
