Italy, 2009
When a film ends and the audience walks out the doors of a movie theater, shuts off their TVs, or switches the channel, there’s a certain reaction that is expected. That reaction can be excitement, anger, derision, joy, and so forth and so on. The gist is that a movie should engender some sort of reaction from the audience. Shadow is the type of film that fails to elicit any type of reaction from the audience. It’s so poorly made that being derisive towards the film serves no point. The proceedings in the film are so bland that there’s nothing to get excited about. Shadow is stupid on a level that doesn’t even allow for anger from the viewer. When one walks away from Shadow no reaction should be present. Without any sort of reaction,...

Directed by Federico Zampaglione from a script he wrote with Giacomo Gensini, based on a story by veteran Italo-horror scribe Dardano Sacchetti, Tulpa stars Claudia Gerini as Lisa, a businesswoman who leads a secret night life of sexual exploration and experimentation, centered on the titular nightclub. When her lovers start getting brutally killed, she undertakes her own investigation to avoid exposing her carnal activities. Michele Placido and Nuit Arquint (Shadow’s memorable villaing Mortis) co-star; Leonardo Cruciano created the makeup FX, and actress Maria Grazia Cucinotta (whose credits range from The Day Of The Beast to The Rite) was one of the producers.
Tulpa, which we first reported on here, screened last year at London’s FrightFest in not-quite-completed form. “We knew what worked in the genre,” Zampaglione says, “but we were also aware of its shortcomings, and that is why we test-screened a rough cut of the film to an audience at Frightfest.

This years Glasgow Frightfest was filled with many an unscheduled treat, from a silat demonstration by the star of The Raid to a couple of interesting short films. One of the most exciting and (at least for me) most anticipated “extra” at the event was a seven minute preview of director Federico Zampagiione’s latest film Tulpa, which was said to be a return to the true roots of Italian giallo. I was honoured to be able to chat to Federico before the screening to get a little insight into just what we can expect from the film and how the director felt about previewing it at Frightfest.
I remember seeing Shadow a few years back at Frightfest and being completely blown away…
Federico: It was three and a half years ago man! Times goes by eh?
Well now you’re back at Frightfest once again with your latest film: a giallo called Tulpa.

It's been close to a year since we've had any sort of update on Federico Zampaglione's Tulpa, but today we have a few screenshots and more to share on the Italian Giallo homage, which begins a five-week shoot in Rome on March 5th.
First, however, on February 25th Zampaglione will screen the opening sequence of Tulpa in Glasgow at the Film4 Frightfest.
Tulpa is based on a treatment penned by Dardano Sacchetti (The Cat o' Nine Tails, A Bay of Blood, City of the Living Dead and many more masterpieces) and then developed by Federico Zampaglione with Giacomo Gensini.
The film, which promises a lot of extreme gruesome death scenes, is about Lisa Boeri (Claudia Gerini), a rich businesswoman totally devoted to her work. She is alone, without any serious relationship, and while during the day she is almost a cold money machine, at night she becomes another person. Every...
