A third-party engaged on behalf of Canadian government funding body Telefilm has concluded that there was no legal wrongdoing by former employee Dan Lyon after launching an investigation last summer, following allegations by filmmakers.
In July, independent filmmaker Pavan Moondi (“Sundowners”) raised questions about the org’s selection criteria for funding and demanded clarity around its diversity standards. Other allegations of impropriety against Lyon were also raised, with actor-producer Melissa D’Agostino alleging on Twitter that the executive had made a sexually inappropriate comment to her when discussing a potential meeting.
Telefilm confirmed on Monday that it has concluded its investigation. “Based on a thorough interview and analysis processes undertaken by the firm le Cabinet Rh in conjunction with independent intercultural specialist Dr. Myrna Lashley, it was concluded that no harassment, discrimination or misconduct had occurred, pursuant to applicable law.”
Due to privacy and confidentiality concerns, the org said it was “unable to provide further details.

Canadian government funding org Telefilm has launched an investigation into one of its top film executives following allegations of misconduct.
Telefilm has faced extensive backlash in the last week after Canadian independent filmmaker Pavan Moondi, who is now based in Los Angeles, raised questions about the org’s selection criteria for funding and demanded clarity around its diversity standards.
Moondi — a former “Schitt’s Creek” story editor and writer-director of feature films such as 2017’s “Sundowners” — took to Twitter on July 3 to share his experiences with Dan Lyon, Telefilm’s feature film executive for Ontario and Nunavut, whom Moondi named in an extensive thread that used screenshots of a recent email exchange between the two.

Exuding such a relaxed feel that it's not surprising that its title doesn't appear onscreen until nearly the half-hour mark, Sundowners never strains too hard for its considerable laughs. Depicting the misadventures of a pair of bumbling videographers assigned to shoot a destination wedding in Mexico, Pavan Moondi's low-key comedy has a plotline that wouldn't be out of place in a mainstream Hollywood effort. But this Canadian indie mostly avoids the sort of vulgarisms attendant to films of that ilk, displaying a slyly droll humor that proves consistently engaging.

"I've been drifting for so long, I don't even remember where I want to go..." This might hit a little close to home for any up-and-coming filmmakers out there who have done this kind of work and felt this way. Sundowners is an indie comedy about two struggling videographers who decide to take a job filming a wedding down in Mexico. But, of course, they run into all kinds of problems after they discover their boss is playing fast and loose. The main cast includes Phil Hanley, Luke Lalonde, Tim Heidecker, Cara Gee, Nick Flanagan, Chris Locke, James Hartnett, and Leah Fay Goldstein. This looks amusing, and a bit depressing, but maybe it's surprisingly quite good. There's some impressive match cuts and sleek editing in this trailer. Perhaps it's some kind of indie gem just waiting to be discovered. Who knows? Take a look. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Pavan Moondi's Sundowners,...

If you want to make a mumblecore comedy about the existential ennui of a bunch of thirtysomethings who are frustrated that their dull day jobs don’t fit their artistic ambitions, it’s hard to find a subject more fitting than wedding videographers. Many videographers are aspiring filmmakers who gave their lives to their craft, only to find out that the practical world only needs them to film drunk, obnoxious people dancing awkwardly to stale disco tunes.

While critical praise is always appreciated, and something that the forthcoming "Diamond Tongues" has no shortage of, sometimes the sweetest words of appreciation comes from fellow filmmakers. And co-directors Pavan Moondi and Brian Robertson caught the attention of "Results" and "Computer Chess" filmmaker Andrew Bujalski with their film. "A riveting, screen-commanding performance from a fresh face is a rare and magical thing--rarer still is that it lands in the lap of filmmakers who know what to do with it. 'Diamond Tongues' had me start to finish," he said. And today we have the exclusive trailer for the movie so you can get a sense of what Bujalski is raving about. Sundance. Berlin. Tribeca. Cannes. Venice. Toronto. New York. Once saved for occasional weeks out of any given year, “film festival season” has now become a year-long event. Be it the aforementioned biggest of the big, or the ever growing slate of must-attend smaller festivals like Hot Docs, True/False, Stanley or Telluride, film festivals are cropping up across the globe.
But very few of them are set against a beautiful landscape quite as glorious as the Mammoth Lakes region of California.
Marking their debut this year, the Mammoth Lakes Film Festival will launch their inaugural lineup this week, with a hotly discussed documentary from Alex Gibney leading the way.
Gibney’s Steve Jobs: The Man In The Machine will open the festival this Wednesday. “We are blessed to have gotten such a strong lineup this year,” says Shira Dubrovner, founder of the festival. She, along with veteran programmer Paul Sbrizzi...

Shooting a film and getting it out there is brave business.Considering the number of factors often at stake for the independent filmmaker - personal finances, the time and hard work of a crew devoted to your confidence, and perhaps most vexing, the threat of your dream sucking for all to see - it's a wonder so many artists crave the thrill of putting themselves out there. But for many struck with the bug, come what may, the path is do or die.Diamond Tongues, a film out of Toronto, is one such brave endeavour that goes as far as to choose for its subject the very real fear of giving everything to a dream and still not making the cut. While the Sundance Film Festival is the better known film festival located in Utah that runs in January, it is not the only one, as the Slamdance Film Festival has been running in the same place during the same month for over 20 years. The unique aspect of the Slamdance Film Festival, however, is its Narrative Features and Documentary Features program, which restricts its selection to films that are directorial debuts, made for under $1 million, and don’t have Us distribution. The 2015 incarnation of the festival is set to run from January 23rd to the 29th, and ahead of the festival’s premiere next month, organisers have unveiled the lineup for the aforementioned categories. The lineup is as follows.

The Sundance Film Festival dominates Park City in late January, but there is also the upstart Slamdance Film Festival. We’ve not really highlighted that fest or its program, but I always stay at Treasure Mountain Inn where Slamdance is headquartered and they’ve kind of grown on me. Last year they brought Christopher Nolan to speak (the fest had the good sense to program his first film) and Joe Mangianello came to vamp his male stripper docu. This year, there’s every chance of seeing Dennis Rodman, the flamboyant former rebounding machine and Bff of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, for the docu Dennis Rodman’s Big Bang In Pyongyang. So let’s all root for an international incident! Here are the films they’ll be playing from January 23-29:
