The Deuce saved its best, and its worst, for last.
The final episode of the show's first season is called "My Name Is Ruby" – a title that serves as an assertion of humanity, a prophecy of doom and famous last words all at once. Written by series co-creators David Simon and George Pelecanos and directed by Michelle MacLaren, it's technically about the moment that the selling of sex became part of the American mainstream. But more importantly, it's about the people left behind as surplus to the transition. As such,...

A review of the Preacher season finale coming up just as the prairie dog drops the charges... "What's the bloody point?" -Cassidy Cassidy in that moment is going on another one of his diatribes against The Big Lebowski, but it's hard not to hear that phrase and think about how it does and doesn't apply to this first season of Preacher. Ultimately, was there enough of a bloody point to Annville and its people to devote 10 episodes, and this entire first season, to it? I spent a lot of the season asking myself that, carried along by the show's energy and visual style, and by many of the performances, but waiting for some kind of late storytelling pivot that would make me think, "Yeah, Catlin and Rogen and Goldberg were smart to delay Jesse's road trip to find God for as long as possible, and I understand why now." Instead,...

This has been a fun, and weird, and uneven, and sometimes upsetting (Remember when He Who Shall Not Be Named hosted?) season, and it has been a pure joy to write about it, in both good times and bad. But as the great Nelly Furtado once sang, all good things come to an end, and so tonight we witness Season 41’s swan song-- guided by Fred Armisen, famous for his own run on SNL, his musical skill on Late Night with Seth Meyers, his IFC shows Portlandia and Documentary Now, and that time we let him play Obama because he was the most ethnic cast member SNL had. Cold Open: Hillary Clinton celebrates her inevitable victory while drinking at a bar with a slightly bitter Bernie Sanders. The two set aside their differences for a dance together. When people talk about how much better SNL was when it was first starting out,...

Few developers make video games as inherently cinematic as Naughty Dog. The Uncharted series is the closest the electronic gaming medium has ever come to reaching the pulpy heights of Raiders of the Lost Ark. The Last of Us is one of the best games I’ve ever played, a terrifying post-apocalyptic tale that poses a number […]

On paper, Doctor Who tackling immigration and extremism might not sound like the set-up for a rip-roaring family adventure. But with 'The Zygon Invasion', Peter Harness does what all great science-fiction writers do, and uses the genre to hold up a microscope to the world as we know it.
The bare bones of the tale are this: after the events of 'The Day of the Doctor', alien shape-shifters The Zygons have struck an accord with humanity and are living amongst us in their millions, hiding in plain sight.
But when a splinter group breaks the peace, the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) must assist an under-fire Unit in countering the threat to Earth... if he can only decide where the real danger lurks.
The Zygons felt like an afterthought in 2013's anniversary special, lost amidst the fireworks, but this is the full-blooded Zygon epic that Doctor Who fans have been waiting 40 years for.
