The writing and directing duo has made a habit out of working with great comedic talent like Jim Carrey and Steve Carell and crafting dynamic films with them like I Love You, Phillip Morris and Crazy, Stupid, Love that contain just the right amount of comedy and drama. Now Glenn Ficarra and John Requa will re-team with Carell on yet another project that sounds like it has the same formula. Moviehole recently spoke with the filmmakers who revealed that they've already written a new untitled script based on an idea that Carell came up with himself. Though the actor won't star in the film he'll still produce. More below. Requa said, "We’re working on something with Steve also, that he’s producing. He’s not starring but it’s based on the idea he had. We wrote the script already. It’s one of these three friends from college,...

As many fellow conflicted yet faithful Netflix subscribers know, last week marked the beginning of the separation of Instant and disc-only memberships. I had been trying to whittle down my streaming queue for a few months, but we all know that is a nearly impossible task with that devilish recommendation list appearing every time you go to the site’s homepage. Suffice it to say, my queue had actually grown since the announcement, making the budgeting decision for me. One of the films at the top of my queue was 2010’s long-awaited gay love story I love You Phillip Morris starring the forever not-sexy Jim Carrey and the always delicious Ewan McGregor as two convicts head-over-heels in love with each other. I could spend an entire column writing about this rapid, surprisingly honest and tender romance sprinkled with deception and humor, however my greatest take away from this man on man sexiness was the unexpectedly hot chemistry...

Box Office Challenge
What movie will be No. 1 at the box office?
Hitting the screens this weekend …
The Help (Wednesday)
30 Minutes or Less
Final Destination 5
Glee the 3D Concert Movie
Tsr’s complete Film Review Database
This weekend features a lot of newcomers, but the real question is, who is taking home the number one prize this weekend?
The Help has the distinctive advantage of a Wednesday opening, but the hype surrounding the movie may have worn off by the time Sunday morning comes around.
My money is on Final Destination 5. Not only does it have the distinct 3D advantage, but horror movies are always a solid bread winner when it comes to the box office. Throw in the fact that it’s got the most theaters this opening weekend, it seems like a sure bet.
Still, Glee has the tween vote, or so it would seem, but...

Watching a smart romantic comedy like .Crazy, Stupid, Love. in a summer filled with fighting giant robots, magical boy wizards, and avenging superheroes is like drinking a tall, cool glass of lemonade during sweltering heat.
Written by Dan Fogelman, the guy who gave us the Disney/Pixar .Cars. movies, and directed by Glen Ficarra and John Requa (.Bad Santa,. .I Love You Phillip Morris.), .Crazy, Stupid, Love. is witty, charming, and oddly uplifting. You will be soul-searching long after the movie is finished. .Crazy, Stupid, Love. is this year.s .Little Miss Sunshine..
The film is decidedly farcical in nature and the talented cast is more than game to dish out every absurd and preposterous narrative arc to full effect. There.s an important major plot twist near the end and if you have seen the movie already please do not spoil it by your earnest revelation.

Years after gaining fame for writing the modern subversive holiday classic "Bad Santa," Hollywood has finally made room for John Requa and Glenn Ficarra. Having directed the wry gay comedy "I Love You, Phillip Morris" last year, Requa and Ficarra have brought their unique combination of gleeful vulgarity, classic wit and perceptive characters to the studio system. Unsurprisingly, that arrival comes with some compromises. "Crazy, Stupid, Love." (period intended) unquestionably ...

Over on his new website Grantland.com, Espn's Bill Simmons has written a really interesting column called "The Movie Star." He sets out to examine two main points -- that Will Smith is the biggest movie star in the world and that Ryan Reynolds is not a movie star at all -- and ultimately falls into a much larger and thornier topic: what makes a movie star?
For Simmons, stardom equals box office. In his mind there are only 24 true movie stars working in Hollywood right now (he doesn't appear to rank them, but this is the order in which they're listed): Will Smith, Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, George Clooney, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, Robert Downey Jr., Christian Bale, Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Russell Crowe, Jeff Bridges, Steve Carell, Seth Rogen, Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis, Mark Wahlberg, Ben Affleck, Jake Gyllenhaal, Justin Timberlake,...

Mr. Popper's Penguins Directed by: Mark Waters Written by: Sean Anders, John Morris and Jared Stern (screenplay), Richard and Florence Atwater (novel) Starring: Jim Carrey, Carla Gugino If you dismiss Mr. Popper's Penguins based on the trailer alone, you would be selling the movie short. The trailer makes the film look stupid to point of embarrassment. I had been dreading covering the film, but I have kids, so I usually cover family films. I actually thought that I was taking one for the team when I agreed to review the film, but I found the film to be charming and sweet, with just the right dose of Mr.Carrey. I might have even gotten a little choked up. Carrey plays Mr. Popper, a slick businessman who specializes in real estate acquisitions in New York. He has set his sights on Tavern on the Green, a third generation family restaurant that has seen better days.

With Ewan McGregor back in theaters with Beginners and with it being Moulin Rouge! week and all, how about a list of our top Ewan performances?
I have only the dimmest recollection of A Life Less Ordinary and I just didn't want to include that awful Star Wars prequel trilogy on principle (though Ewan survived it better than most of the actors) and it's possible I forgot something else... but here we go.
10 "Jerome" in The Pillow Book (1996)
I love Ewan's ballsy (ahem) taste in material... at least at that point in his career. His screen persona often reads sweet but he's quite a wild child in terms of the cinema.
09 "The Ghost" in The Ghost Writer (2010)
A tricky cipher part -- who is he really? we can't know -- that he pulled off well. It helps that the movie is so damn good: top ten list!

Writer/director Mike Mills is a man who understands how to translate grief into art. After losing both of his parents within a few years of each other, he crafted a script for a movie based on his experiences, which includes the remarkable story of his father coming out of the closet at age 75 almost immediately after his wife’s death. This script eventually became the film Beginners.
Mills recently sat down for a round-table interview in New York, and was joined by cast members Ewan McGregor and Melanie Laurent (best known to American audiences for her role in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds). The three discussed their work on Beginners, a low-budget production and a true labor of love for all involved.
Though much of the film deals with the sense of loss when a loved one passes away, Mills was determined not to create a pity party.

When a movie takes a long time to come to theaters after its festival premiere, there's a tendency to assume the worst. We forget sometimes that festivals are more about heat than quality, and that it's the hottest movies, not always the best ones, that are most quickly acquired and released. A lengthy interim between festival and release doesn't necessarily mean a movie is shelved because it's bad. It might just be a tough sell. I got a big-time reminder of that this week when I watched "I Love You Phillip Morris" by writer/directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa.
Released late in 2010 almost two full years after its premiere at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, "I Love You Phillip Morris" hybridizes and satirizes several different genres, most prominently the con man movie and the romantic comedy. Jim Carrey stars as Steven Russell, a police officer and family man who has...

I Love You Phillip Morris is one of those really amazing films that unfortunately wound up kicking around film festivals and just could not find a distributor. Many people thought it was because the American audience was not prepared for gay sex scenes this explicit, and while there might be some truth in that, I do not think that is the reason why I Love You Phillip Morris could not find a distributor. Despite its difficulties getting into theaters, I really hope that I Love You Phillip Morris finds its audience on DVD and Blu-ray.
In I Love You Phillip Morris, Steven Russell (Jim Carrey) is living the suburban dream with his lovely Christian wife Debbie (Leslie Mann) when a near-death experience forces him to face the fact that he is gay. Gay, gay, gay, gay, gay. Steven leaves his wife and family, and he starts leading the high life...

Let's revisit some of the movie's excellent moments, since it's a hilarious and hair-raising tale of jailbreaking romance.

Screenplay by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa
2009, USA
I Love You Phillip Morris opens with a disclaimer of sorts, assuring us that “This really happened. It really did.” Such a blunt beginning not only establishes the film’s overall tone, but also serves as writer-directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s license for outrageousness. There is certainly enough material in the true story of Steven Jay Russell, con artist and multiple prison escapee, to make for a riveting psychological drama. But this is not that movie. The film’s first ten minutes-where Steven, as played by Jim Carrey, narrates (in a voice as suspiciously wholesome and happy-go-lucky as that of Ned Flanders) his transition from family man/police officer to affluent gay man/con artist-play out as pure screwball dark comedy; and Ficarra and Riqua, who also co-wrote...

Chicago – With all the creatively bankrupt, audience-repelling dreck clogging up theaters these days, it’s easy to see why a comedian would sign up for a challenging art house satire rather than pick up a fat, unearned pay check. Robin Williams delivered his best work in years in Bobcat Goldthwait’s “World’s Greatest Dad,” and now Jim Carrey adds to his streak of woefully underrated performances in Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s “I Love You Phillip Morris.”
First-time directors Ficarra and Requa may hardly seem like art house material, especially after helming the scripts for pictures such as “Bad Santa” and “Cats & Dogs.” Yet after a long delay, “Phillip Morris” was relegated to an extremely limited theatrical release, primarily for its decidedly risqué and uncommercial subject matter. In other words, the story is a gay romance that doesn’t portray its characters in a tragic light. The film is a flat-out comedy,...

The trailer for Crazy, Stupid, Love starring Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling has just been released by Warner Bros. Generations have learned how to flirt, how to seduce, and how to fall in love based on what we see on the big screen. And while gay people had to take coded cues from the heterosexual cinematic adventures of Cary Grant and Rock Hudson, there's no reason that straight folks can't learn a thing or two from movie gays. We hope Ryan Gosling isn't selling out. But judging from this trailer, it looks like he has abandoned his usual dark indie depths for pretty-boy womanizing. You wouldn't think that a movie starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor in the leading roles would be difficult to market, but perhaps the premise of "I Love You Phillip Morris" — the story of a con man (Carrey) who repeatedly attempts to break out of prison to reunite with his former cellmate and current lover (McGregor) — isn't the easiest sell for mainstream moviegoers.
Indeed, it took several release date changes and delays before "Phillip Morris" finally arrived in theaters in December 2010. And now that the movie has landed on DVD, we certainly hope it'll be seen by the wide audience it deserves.
We've got an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip from the just-released "Phillip Morris" DVD, showcasing Jim Carrey's process as he transforms himself into Steven Jay Russell, the confidence man who falls hopelessly in love with McGregor's titular Morris.

HollywoodNews.com: If you missed the drama ‘I Love You Phillip Morris’ starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor – which was easy to do since it never got past limited release – now is your chance to catch it on DVD.
The film focuses on a love affair between a con man (Carrey) and his cellmate (McGregor). Carrey’s character commits all kinds of crazy misdeeds, like breaking out of Texas prisons four times, to be with his lover.
Carrey played Steven Russell, a man who leads a seemingly average life – an organ player in the local church, happily married to Debbie (Leslie Mann), and a member of the local police force.
Steven has a severe car accident that leads him to the ultimate epiphany: he’s gay and he’s going to live life to the fullest – even if he has to break the law to do it.

Our friends at Lions Gate sent us this exclusive behind-the-scenes I Love You Phillip Morris clip to get eveyone interested in the upcoming DVD release for the movie. In this excerpt, actor Ewan McGregor explains how he prepped for his role as a mild-mannered gay con. We were struck at how earnestly he wanted to nail the portrayal — even traveling to Arkansas to meet the real Phillip Morris. This only confirms why we already love McGregor so much!

With his big budget, animated "Christmas Carol" failing to make a splash at the box office and his indie "I Love You, Phillip Morris" barely seeing a release, Jim Carrey appears to have gone back to the basics in his new comedy "Mr. Popper's Penguins" -- and that might not be a bad thing.
The movie is loosely adapted from the classic 1938 children's book of the same name, taking the premise of a man finding himself with 10 penguin roommates and transporting it to a high rise in New York City. The teaser doesn't shed too much light on the how or why, but reveals that getting used to a house full of arctic birds might be an uphill battle.
While not quite in the same vein as the kill-the-pests antics of "Mousehunt," "Mr. Popper's Penguins" should offer Carrey the chance to do what he does best: get physical.

Hollywood producers and directors have a long tradition of shying away from gay male sex scenes – even as they labor valiantly to insert lesbian sex in places in the most ridiculous of places. Nina had lesbian sex in Black Swan to show how obsessed she was with herself? Really, Darren Aronofsky? Couldn’t you just come out and say, “This is how we got financing. A movie about ballet? I mean, are you kidding? Of course, we had to do this!”
But every now and then, a gay character does manage to see some action on TV or in the movies, as we’ve documented before in our articles Gay Sex Scenes That Made Movie History and TV's Most Influential Gay Sex Scenes – and sometimes it even gets surprisingly steamy!
(My personal vote for the single hottest gay sex scene ever seen on television? This very Nsfw 2006 scene from the Showtime series Sleeper Cell,...

Bravo, Mr. McConaughey. It’s been some time, but it seems like you are back and ready to play in the big leagues again. One must wonder, was it Fool’s Gold that finally did you in? Or was it always Sahara?

After lending her gorgeous voice to last year’s Tangled, Mandy Moore is set to star in Chris Sparling‘s (writer of Buried) directorial debut alongside Rodrigo Santoro (I Love You, Phillip Morris, Rango).
Currently titled Falling Slowly, the film is a “supernatural drama, about a couple whose apartment is haunted by a dark presence” [Variety].
bgcdshw3b3… Sorry, I fell asleep on my keyboard after typing the above synopsis.
Really? Ghosts in an apartment? No spin? Not even shameless tagged-on kitsch? It lacks the high concept of the remarkably-disappointing (on all counts) Buried, never mind the fact that Moore is significantly less talented than Ryan Reynolds as actor, who demonstrated that he’s not quite the dramatic actor some had hoped. Color me uninterested and indifferent.
Did you enjoy Buried? Are you excited or indifferent towards Sparling in the director’s chair?...

Today: Why is gay TV so much better than what’s gay in movie theaters?
Have a question about gay male entertainment? Contact me here (and be sure and include your city and state and/or country!
Q: I don’t get it: gay characters on television are more common, more prominent, and more multi-dimensional than ever before. So why aren’t we seeing more gay characters in film? Sure, there are one or two high-profile movies every year – Milk last year, I Love You, Phillip Morris this year. But that’s it? What gives? – Mouse, Lansing, Michigan

“Deep Vote,” an Oscar winning screenwriter and a member of the Academy, will write this column — exclusively for ScottFeinberg.com — every week until the Academy Awards in order to help to peel back the curtain on the Oscar voting process. (His identity must be protected in order to spare him from repercussions for disclosing the aforementioned information.)
Thus far, he has shared his thoughts in column 1 about his general preferences; column 2 about “Solitary Man” (Anchor Bay Films, 5/21, R, trailer) and “Winter’s Bone” (Roadside Attractions, 6/11, R, trailer); column 3 about “Alice in Wonderland” (Disney, 3/5, PG, trailer), “Mother and Child” (Sony Pictures Classics, 5/7, R, trailer), and “Toy Story 3” (Disney, 6/18, G, trailer); column 4 about “Get Low” (Sony Pictures Classics, 7/30, PG-13, trailer), “The Kids Are All Right” (Focus Features, 7/9, R, trailer), and “The Social Network” (Columbia, 10/1, PG-13, trailer); column 5 about “127 Hours” (Fox Searchlight, 11/5, R, trailer), “Biutiful” (Roadside Attractions, 12/17, R, trailer), and “Shutter Island” (Paramount,...

As we march ever closer towards the Academy Awards, the smaller ceremonies that give us an idea of what to expect at the biggest awards show of them all continue. Tonight, the WGA (Writer’s Guild of America) Awards were handed out, and the winners are…kind of who you’d expect.
And those people who you’d kind of expect to be winners are Aaron Sorkin, claiming the Best Adapted Screenplay award for The Social Network, based on Ben Mezrich’s nonfiction book The Accidental Billionaires. Nabbing the award for Best Original Screenplay was Christopher Nolan, for Inception. Additionally, Charles Ferguson picked up the Best Documentary Screenplay award for his film Inside Job.
The other nominess in the Adapted Screenplay category were Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy for 127 Hours; John Requa and Glenn Ficarra for I Love You, Phillip Morris; Peter Craig and Aaron Stockard and Ben Affleck for...

We've been so caught up in Oscar nominations, we've been letting other things slide. So herewith the return of "Yes, No, Maybe So" in which we pre-judge movies we haven't even seen by their trailers. Today's topic is the new drama (dramedy?) Beginners about a man whose elderly father comes out to him. It opens in June, marking two consecutive cutesy gay-themed films for (We Love Him) 'Phillip Morris' (Ewan McGregor).
Yes. Beginners has a fine cast: enduring screen star Christopher Plummer is the gay dad; Melanie Laurent, hot off of Inglourious Basterds, is Ewan's girl; And then there's Ewan himself who, as I've shared before, has the face that makes me happiest at the movies. It's a personal thing that I can't define but to look at him is to experience joy. This is not to say "he's hot" or anything sullied by baser instincts. It's just joy.

Tort reform is a sham, folks. It was something dreamed up by huge billion dollar conglomerates in order to increase their profit margins. Really, all you need to know is that one of the major engineers of tort reform law in the United States during the 1980s and 1990s was Karl Rove. Guess who benefits the most from tort reform? People like Karl Rove. Big oil. Credit card companies, The insurance industry. Tort reform was basically designed to take the jury out of the equation.
The case that really spearheaded tort reform was the McDonald's hot coffee case, a lawsuit that most people have heard about, but very few know the actual details. Thanks to lawmakers who have vested interests in tort reform in the form of campaign contributions and corporations that used the McDonald's coffee case as its poster case, what most people think they know is that it's...

Steven Russell is a small-town West Virginia cop with a pretty wife till a near-death car accident forces him to confront the truth: He’s gay, dammit, and there’s nothing to be done about it except begin to live the life he was born to lead. So he moves to Miami, gets a hot boyfriend, and discovers another difficult fact: “Being gay is really expensive.” So he turns to a life of con artistry to support himself and his lover in the manner to which they’ve become accustomed. Here’s the twist: In prison -- for yes, the law inevitably catches up with Russell -- he falls hard and fast and deep for his cellmate, the endearing Phillip Morris (and Morris for him)... and Russell will do anything to be with Morris forever and ever from then on, up to and including multiple (and hilarious) escapes from prison once they’re separated.

As I’m gearing up to leave for Park City, Utah tomorrow, a new trailer for a film I’m looking forward to has popped up on MTV. From director David Mackenzie (Mister Foe, Spread) comes a romantic thriller starring Ewan McGregor, Eva Green, Ewen Bremner, Stephen Dillane, Denis Lawson, and Connie Nielsen. While I never saw Spread, I was a big fan of Mister Foe and will certainly check this out. The trailer doesn’t give a concrete idea of the plot, but with the talented Green and McGregor (recently impressing with Beginners, Phillip Morris, and The Ghost Writer), I’m intrigued. See the preview below.
Synopsis: When Susan (Eva Green), an epidemiologist, reemerges from an affair gone sour, she encounters a peculiar patient—a Glasgow truck driver who experienced a sudden, uncontrollable crying fit. Now he is calm, but he has lost his sense of smell. Susan learns...

Comic raises hackles as host of Golden Globes, with
stars and critics condemning 'mean-spirited' humour
Gervais took the sharp-edged humour he perfected in The Office by firing a relentless stream of jokes that left some of the stars unamused and media critics accusing him of overstepping the mark.
His many victims included the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the body that organises the Globes and had invited him to host it for the second year running. He quipped of Philip Berk, president of the association, that he had just had to "help him off the toilet and pop his teeth in".
He then joked that the association had been accepting bribes – a reference to Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, who were nominated for awards despite the fact that their recent film The Tourist has been one of the critical clangers of the year. "I haven't seen The Tourist," Gervais said. "Who has?...

During last night's Golden Globes there was a palpable tension in the air which can be clearly attributed to Ricky Gervais's controversial and caustic hosting style. Ramping up the snark from last year, he dealt several harsh quips, the most unpopular (with the Globe crowd) being one presumably levied at John Travolta and Tom Cruise. He said, in reference to I Love You, Phillip Morris, "Two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay. So the complete opposite of two famous Scientologists, then." You can see the entire monologue here (Gawker).
So the question is, was it the Scientology aspect or the gay aspect that made that particular joke so uncomfortable? Gervais is, I believe, obviously not homophobic, but the Hollywood community is particularly spiky and protective of privacy when it comes to sexuality. While homosexuals still can't marry in this state (dammit), the prevalence of gay characters in film and television,...

Earlier this week Ricky Gervais divulged to Conan O'Brien that NBC had supposedly axed an idea he'd had to don a Nazi uniform and joke that it was from Mel Gibson's closet. Since then, Hollywood has been wondering how much the network was planning to censor the host or how much he was going to censor himself, for that matter.
Within the first few moments of the funnyman's opening monologue it was apparent he had no intention of letting up on the stars, and NBC let the host run wild. After taking his traditional first sip of beer, "The Office" star bashed Charlie Sheen for his now-infamous hotel antics.

I Love You, Phillip Morris Directed by: Glenn Ficarra & John Requa Written by: John Requa & Glenn Ficarra (written by), Steve McVicker (book) Starring: Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor, Leslie Mann The battle to bring I Love You, Phillip Morris to the screen was a curious one. Originally set to bow in early 2010, the film was shelved for six months by its distributors. A vague legal battle postponed the second scheduled release last summer, and the film finally limped to my local art house in December. There was widespread speculation that one of the reasons for its initial delay was — how should I put this — its gayness. Honestly, that was one of the primary reasons I was interested in seeing this docudrama, which casts Ewan McGregor and Jim Carrey as penal lovers (pardon my French). Distinctly different actors, the idea of the pair performing together proved an interesting proposition, especially if the...

Ryan Kavanaugh via La TimesI read an interesting article over at IndieWire recently. In it indie producer Cotty Chubb (Appaloosa, Eve's Bayou, Mallrats) suggests Relativity Media chief Ryan Kavanaugh should start bankrolling smaller films to bring back younger viewers. Then give those films to theater chains for free while keeping all the ancillary money from DVDs, video on demand and domestic and international television rights.
His reasoning is that if these films are made they will have lower ticket prices than regular films and that producers will find a new crop of filmmakers who will give voice to the young people who are currently avoiding movies, or, as Chubb said in the article: "The studios, for the most part, don't make actual movies for [young adults] anymore, movies like Say Anything or Fight Club. For every Superbad there's a hundred enormous branded spectacles, notwithstanding the deliciously nutty Black Swan or the passionate The Fighter (which,...
