For the 41st consecutive year, theater publishing company Samuel French will celebrate the art of the 10- to 30-minute play. Taking place Aug. 9–14 at Classic Stage Company’s East 13th Street Theater in New York City, the 41st annual Samuel French Off Off Broadway Short Play Festival will feature staged readings of pieces under 30 minutes in length, from this year’s 30 semi-finalists. A panel of judges made up of professionals active in the theater community will select 10–12 finalists, six of which will be announced Aug. 14. Their plays will be published in print form in Samuel French’s “Off Off Broadway Festival Plays” series. Off-Off-Broadway’s greatest short play festival is celebrating a historic birthday this year. The 40th annual Samuel French Oob Festival will take place Aug. 4–9 at the East 13th Street Theater. Whittled down from an impressive 1,500 submissions, the final 30 plays will receive fully produced readings over the festival’s first four nights. Each playwright will work with directors and actors of their choosing to present their 10-minute productions in batches of three or four. On Aug. 8 the first and second set of finalist plays will perform again, followed by the announcement of the six winning works on Aug. 9. As in years past, those six winners will be published in a collection to be released later by the theater publishing company. The Samuel French Off Off Broadway Short Play Festival Oob is now accepting submissions for its 40th annual season, taking place this summer in New York City. The Oob Festival is New York's oldest, continuous short play festival, featuring emerging playwrights from across the United States, Canada, and abroad. 30 plays will be selected for the weeklong festival, and six plays will be published in the 40th edition of the Off Off Broadway Festival Plays anthology series.

The 39th annual Samuel French Off-Off-Broadway Short Play Festival has announced it’s six winners. Thirty plays—selected out of an original submission pool of 1,385—were performed at the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre at Playwrights Horizons from Aug. 5 to Aug. 10. Winners were selected by a panel of judges that included Keith Josef Adkins, Rick Burkhardt, Neena Beber, Alex Kilgore, Christian Parker, Emily Morse, and others. The winners were “Taisetsu Na Hito” by Leah Nanako Winkler; “et·y·mol·o·gy” by Jennifer Jasper; “The Logic” by Will Arbery; “A Wake for David’s Fucked-Up Face” by Skylar Fox; “John, who’s here from Cambridge” by Martyna Majok; and “Mandate” by Kelly Younger. “This year’s collection of winners offers a range of playwriting styles and voices, and is perhaps more varied play-by-play than ever before,” said Oob Festival co-Artistic Director and Samuel French Literary Manager Amy Rose Marsh in a press release.

The Huston-based Theatre was forced by theatrical licenser Samuel French, Inc. to cancel the rest of its run. Choosing a monologue for college auditions can be daunting. The key is to really think about, and seek out, roles that you can comfortably perform. While you might be called on to play 60-year-olds in college, for your audition it’s better to stick with roles closer to your age. Also, keep in mind that the most effective monologues are those in which the character speaking has an immediate and deeply felt need that is revealed by the end.
