Did you know the earliest Oscar year which boasts 20 acting nominees who are still with us is 1992? It's the 25th anniversary of that year and that's the furthest back in time you can go from which all the acting nominees are still walking this earth. With the very noticeable exception of long retired Gene Hackman (no one has been able to convince him to come back to the movies -- and directors have tried!) most of them are still working, too. The lesson is simple: cherish your favorite actors while they're with us because no one lasts forever... except through their art!

The Fast and Furious franchise is a damn interesting one to look at. Who’d’ve thought way back in 2001 that a little film about underground street racing would end up as one of the most profitable action franchises of all time? It was something that could not have been foreseen, and it’s been rewarding to see a series like this pivot from one thing to another when it realized certain aspects of its formula were working. Now, each film seems to have about as many explosions as your average Transformers flick. And it’s awesome.
Before I get started, I think it’s worth mentioning that, like many folks, I grew up watching these movies, from its lowly beginnings to its current iteration. I hated Tokyo Drift, and I was surprised to see its resurgence in Fast and Furious, the fourth film in the franchise. Fast Five was high point for the series,...

“I’ve never been more appreciative, humbled and just overall excited about the fact that I’ve been nominated,” says Hacksaw Ridge sound mixer Kevin O’Connell of his 21st Oscar nomination — which he shares with Peter Grace, Robert Mackenzie and Andy Wright — as we sit down at The Hollywood Reporter to record an episode of THR‘s ‘Awards Chatter’ podcast. “I don’t want to say I took it for granted in the past, but I certainly don’t take it for granted anymore.”

It’s one thing to talk about something, and another to do it, and it’s a lesson Francis Ford Coppola will soon be learning. For quite some time, the legendary filmmaker has been talking about “live cinema” as the wave of the future, and it’s exactly what it sounds like: a director filming a movie that is simultaneously broadcast to audiences. It’s not unlike what has been done on a smaller level on television, particularly recently with live TV productions of “Grease” and “A Few Good Men,” but while Coppola has been working out the technical hurdles of bringing such a project to life, Woody Harrelson is just going to go ahead and do it.

The first two hours of “Goliath,” the new Amazon drama from David E. Kelley and Jonathan Shapiro, should remind viewers of their favorite courtroom dramas.
“A Few Good Men” certainly springs to mind, as does “The Verdict,” “A Civil Action” and “The Rainmaker.” Various other tales of little-guy lawyers taking on impossible odds will undoubtedly pop up, depending on personal favorites, but that’s not necessarily a compliment. It’s also not a detriment. Depending on your leniency toward genre tropes, “Goliath” will either be your guilty favorite, or you’ll feel not guilty at all.

A review of tonight's Veep coming up just as soon as I quote the late Lionel Richie... There's a famous moment at the end of the first season of Cheers that half the TV business has been chasing in the 30-plus years since it first aired. It's the moment where the line gets obliterated between Sam Malone and Diane Chambers' utter disdain for one another and their animal attraction, and one moment they're threatening physical violence, and the next they are passionately making out. If you're the kind of person who reads this blog, odds are you've seen at least the most iconic part of the scene before, but here it is, anyway: That show, and that moment, bottled the idea of Unresolved Sexual Tension, which later series would try variations on. Sometimes, the will-they-or-won't-they couple would have mutual loathing for each other like Sam and Diane (David and Maddie...

Bust out those aerosol cans — NBC has chosen "Hairspray" to be its next live musical.
The network announced the news at the Television Critics Association press tour. "Hairspray" follows in the wake of previous live musical events "The Wiz," "Peter Pan," and "The Sound of Music."
Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will oversee the show, which will air December 2016. NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt told reporters that the musical's focus on race relations and diversity was a major factor in its selection.

24 years ago today, audiences first got to see Steven Spielberg’s take on what would happen if an adult Peter Pan returned to Neverland. “Hook” opened in theaters on December 11, 1991. The film featured Dustin Hoffman as Hook, Julia Roberts as Tinkerbell, Bob Hoskins as Smee, Maggie Smith as Wendy Darling, and in the role of adult Peter Pan, Robin Williams. After “Hook” was released, Williams had less than 23 years left of that “awfully big adventure” — life — before his untimely passing in 2014. Other notable December 11 happenings in pop culture history: • 1960: Aretha Franklin made her New York debut at the Village Vanguard. • 1968: Blood, Sweat & Tears released their landmark self-titled album. • 1972: Genesis performed their first-ever U.S. show at Boston’s Brandeis University. It was a warm-up gig for their “official” American debut two days later at Philharmonic Hall in New York • 1992: “The Muppet Christmas Carol” and “A Few Good Men” opened in theaters.

A blockbuster rated PG-13 is destined to win the Golden Popcorn at the MTV Movie Awards this weekend, judging by the show’s recent winners. While R-rated awards season titles “American Sniper,” “Boyhood,” “Whiplash” and “Gone Girl” are all nominated for the top prize, the most likely winners are PG-13, including Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” John Green’s “The Fault in Our Stars” and Jennifer Lawrence’s “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1.” Beginning in 1992, MTV’s first six Best Movie winners were all rated R, including “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” “A Few Good Men,” “Menace II Society,...

Saturday Night Live, Season 40, Episode 12, “Blake Shelton”
Aired January 24, 2015 at 11:30 pm Et on NBC (East coast version watched for review)
Host/Musical Guest: Country music gets a bad rap in a lot of ways outside of the bible belt. Part of this is justifiable: The dregs of country music are ripe ground for parody, what with their trucks and beer and love for the troops. “Bro country”, in particular, has as many staunch defenders as it does haters who want to watch it burn in a tire fire. These are the kinds of country songs that take those truck and beer aspects of the genre, crank it up to 10, and generally are performed either very drunk or without shirts on (for a good primer on this, just listen to Maddie & Tae’s excellent takedown “Girl In A Country Song”). For many, Blake Shelton is the grand poobah of bro country,...

Considering how much it dominated the public conversation this past week, it was a given that Saturday Night Live was going to take on the New England Patriots and the football controversy people have dubbed "DeflateGate." The show quickly cut to the chase on Saturday's show, using the scandal as fodder for the episode's cold open. Featured player Beck Bennett brought the proper amount of grumpiness to his portrayal of Patriots Coach Bill Belichick (who loves Tom Brady like a son, "just more of an estranged son that I wouldn't trust around footballs"), and Taran Killam gets to play Tom Brady,...

Look: maybe this won’t be so bad? This has been a pretty stellar season of “Saturday Night Live,” by far the best and most consistent since I’ve started covering it here at the start of Season 36. So who could blame the show for picking a host based on corporate synergy rather than comedic talent? Plenty of hosts serve a larger purpose than “comedic quality” when they appear, and at least we are sure that Blake Shelton isn’t ashamed of making a fool of himself. (We have his cringe-inducing holiday specials as evidence of that.) Look: Shelton is an incredibly charismatic host on “The Voice,” but nothing I’ve seen there screams that he’ll be well-suited for hosting “SNL.” Still, my fears are really based on nothing but fears: hosts as varied as Bruno Mars and Eli Manning have turned in more-than-credible jobs as host, and I...

"You can't handle the truth!" —A Few Good Men Since the first week of October, millions of listeners have tuned into a weekly podcast that reinvestigated the 1999 murder of a Baltimore high school student. Adnan Syed was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for strangling his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, but the Serial podcast, narrated by Sarah Koenig, has tantalized an obsessive audience with the possibility that an innocent man has been in prison for 15 years. If you haven't become an obsessed listener, there's a...

Director and writer Quentin Tarantino burst into the mainstream 20 years ago this week with the debut of "Pulp Fiction." Matthew Chernov says that it was "like a shot of adrenaline to the heart" that "changed the movie landscape" forever. He adds that movies from that timeframe like "Dances with Wolves" and "A Few Good Men" were "content to play it safe." Calling it the "coolest" film of the 1990s, he praises the soundtrack, razor-sharp dialogue (from an Oscar-winning screenplay by Tarantino and Roger Avary), the cinematography, and stars John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, and Uma Thurman. While nominated for the Best Picture of 1994, it lost that Oscar race to "Forrest Gump." James Gandolfini‘s final film opens this weekend. Written by Dennis Lehane, The Drop, is a crime drama starring Tom Hardy and multiple pitbulls, and has been getting strong reviews after premiering at the Toronto Film Festival. After the actor’s sudden death in 2013 we’ve spent the past year celebrating the abundance of memorable film and television roles he left us with — many of which you can watch by simply logging into your Netflix account.
Below are eight films you can stream from the comfort of your home, office, or park bench (bearing said park has WiFi) this weekend. And why not? The weather’s probably going to be crummy anyway.
Not Fade Away (2012)
Written and directed by Sopranos creator David Chase, Gandolfini plays the conservative New Jersey father to a creatively driven son who’s discovering rock and roll during the ’60s. (This one gets extra points for its killer soundtrack.

A “found footage” horror movie about werewolves? From the guys behind The Devil Inside? Bear with me, I promise there’s a light at the end of this topsy-turvy tunnel.
Where The Exorcism Of Emily Rose attempts to weigh demonic possession against mental illness, Wer calls upon the same judicial storytelling by putting a suspected werewolf on trial in hopes of proving innocence through physical ailments. Playing out like a faux-documentary, most of the film is spent watching a sassy lawyer defender her furry client, condemning a case riddled with inconsequential evidence that only the worst investigation could slum together, but a shockingly invigorated third act changes at the rising of a full moon. Writer/Director William Brent Bell and co-writer Matthew Peterman’s previous film, The Devil Inside, crumbles under the weight of vapid storytelling and an absolutely insulting ending, but these rejuvenated artists refuse to wander the same joyless road a second time.

"…that’s what you get, folks, for makin’ whoopee."
When Susie Diamond (Michelle Pfeiffer) crawled seductively across the top of Jack Baker’s (Jeff Bridges) piano while singing a rendition of Eddie Cantor’s "Makin' Whoopee!" in The Fabulous Baker Boys, a highly spoofable moment in Hollywood history was born. What was it about that scene that has made everyone from Ellen Degeneres to the Animaniacs want to spoof it? Was it the moody cinematography of Michael Ballhaus, the playful piano stylings of composer Dave Grusin (the real Jack Baker pianist), or the smoldering, almost languid, sensuality of Pfeiffer’s performance? Whatever it is, the "Makin' Whoopee!" scene is unforgettable and will likely continue to inspire spoofs and homages for years to come.
With homages on our minds, we started to put together a list of some of the other movies Hollywood loves to spoof. Help us rank the scene...
