Writer: Jim McCann
Artist: Janet Lee
Publisher: Image
In Lost Vegas 1, Eisner Award winners Jim McCann and Janet Lee (Return of the Dapper Men) manage to marry a wacky high concept sci-fi story with deep characterization and unique visuals. On the surface, Roland is just another space scoundrel like Han Solo or Malcolm Reynolds. However, he lacks these characters’ penchant for action and falls flat at bravado with his laughable attempts to seduce a pair of showgirls. The story makes clear that Roland is a “thinker”, and his failed attempt at conning a savage alien at Black Jack earns him his sentence in Lost Vegas, a penal colony located inside a casino on a spaceship. (And who said originality was dead.)
The plot is a combination of the typical “jailbreak” and “last job” plots found in many comics and films. But the believable characters and subtle social commentary keep it from being trite.

It’s the first week of May and you know what that means, The Avengers in theaters kicking off the summer movie season on May 4, which is also Star Wars Day, and Free Comic Book Day, Saturday May 5. Fcbd has capitalized on the first weekend of May because of what seems like an annual release of a Marvel movie and hopefully there will be plenty of interest in stories starring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, but we would be irresponsible to pass up the opportunity to showcase all of the other comic book publishers and diverse selection of comics to choose from that will be made to sample in the form of free comics, as well as hopefully well-stocked selections of their catalog at your local comic book shop, which you can find by dialing 1-888-comic-shop or visiting the Comic Shop Locator website.

Has Joss Whedon’s The Avengers left you hankering for more Marvel action? Then here’s James with a few comic book recommendations...
Quick note: it makes sense to read this after you've seen the movie, to protect yourself from potential spoilers...
So, you’ve seen the film, and you want more Avengers. Who can blame you? But with almost 50 years of comics published, where do you even start turning your interest in the film into a list of comics you might want to read? Well, could we suggest you start with this lot?
Ultimates Vol 1 & 2
Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch
If you liked Avengers, then you’ll undoubtedly love this: Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch’s 26-issue epic which re-imagines the formation of the Avengers and directly inspired many of the movie’s elements, from Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury to the naming of the Chitauri. Hitch’s...

Mr. Nice is an odd film. An odd film, but also ultimately, mostly boring. Written and directed by the talented, eclectic filmmaker Bernard Rose (Immortal Beloved, Candyman), this film falls shy of what I believe the film could have achieved. Mr. Nice is the adult life story of Howard Marks, a British dope smuggler, based on Marks. autobiography.
Rhys Ifans (Greenberg, Pirate Radio) plays Howard Marks, operating within the elite sector of the drug trade, but gets in his own way as a dealer due to his own habitual use and relative ignorance. Despite being based on a true story, Mr. Nice plays more like a low-key farce. The film isn.t riddled with laughter-inducing moments, but I found myself constantly thinking this is too strange to be true, but we all know what they say about truth being stranger than fiction. Unfortunately, strange does not allows equate to interesting.

For several decades now, the drug smuggler Howard Marks (aka Mr. Nice) has maintained a minor celebrity in England through an endless schedule of live shows, lads’ mags features and a few books. With an obviously decent drug tale to be told, and with a readymade audience in the waiting, it’s a wonder that the film’s taken so long to get made. Surprisingly then — especially considering that the target audience probably overlaps with fans of Guy Ritchie’s East End output — it’s one of the most ordinary, unglamorous celluloid drug tales ever told.
Suitably enough, the film is framed as one of Marks’ live shows. Besides this top and tail, it’s a linear narrative that begins with Marks’ childhood in Wales,...

If you follow any number of comics creators on Twitter, you know that the official list of 2011 Eisner nominations emerged yesterday. Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez enjoyed a whopping four nominations between them for their work on "Locke and Key," and Jim McCann was definitely feeling the love for "Return of the Dapper Men." Meanwhile, Mark Waid used a lot of capital letters to sound off about a lack of Boom! Studios titles on the list. ("I Thought You Would Be Funnier" did nab a nod for Best Humor Publication, though.")
The greatest retweets of the day list contains other jewels as well today, with a rousing debate about who would win in a fight between Black Canary and Black Widow and some fine advice to artists from Simon Spurrier. Look, learn and see if you reacted to "American Idol" the same way Ty Templeton did after the jump.

Marvel will be launching a new five-issue miniseries in May called Marvel Zombies Christmas Carol.
That’s right you read it correctly, it’s Zombies in the Marvel Universe, retelling the classic Charles Dickens story. Artist David Baldeon and writer Jim McCann are teaming up to bring this story to life. Apparently they plan on telling something more horrific than silly like you might expect from a Marvel Zombies story.
“When we started working on this idea, I was amazed at how well the original text worked in with the concept of the undead. We've taken a way to introduce 'zombies' in a Victorian manner, keeping with the chilling tale Dickens crafted in the 1800s,” said writer Jim McCann. “I think that David's amazing designs show you how well it will look. We aren't going for campiness or shoving zombies into a popular story, but for true Victorian horror...and...

Writer Jim McCann has explained his decision to reveal that a relatively unknown character was underneath the Ronin mask during the latest issue of Widowmaker. During last month's third issue of the crossover, Alexi Shastakov - Black Widow's ex-husband and the original Red Guardian - was revealed as the Ronin that had been plaguing Widow and Hawkeye throughout the series. The character first appeared back in the '60s in a number of Avengers issues, but has rarely been featured since. "That's one reason why we didn't end on a last-page reveal of him unmasking and expect everybody to immediately recognize who he was," McCann told Newsarama. "There was a little bit of concern, but he had (more)...

Lying on the golden beach of Koh Tao, Thailand, in the sweltering heat of last December, I was totally absorbed in Howard Marks’ life story Mr. Nice. His autobiography emulated such wit and sparkle and wove such a fascinating story that I was still turning pages well after the sun went down. So I was understandably more than excited about the DVD release of Bernard Rose's film adaptation of the same name. Unfortunately, I finished the film with an overall feeling of being profoundly underwhelmed.
Mr Nice (2010) introduces Marks as an affable and unassuming schoolboy. Marks excels in school and gains a place at Oxford, where he stumbles across his first hash experience. From here, the black and white footage diminishes as he tokes for the first time, exhaling in glorious Technicolour. From here onwards, we see Marks move into the world of drug smuggling following the arrest of a friend,...

Rhys Ifans was born to play drug trafficker Howard Marks in this amusing if hardly trustworthy biopic, writes Peter Bradshaw
In repose, Rhys Ifans's face seems naturally to settle into a half-smile of insinuation: a "you-know-you-want-me" leer. It's probably entirely appropriate for his latest role – and really, no other casting was possible. He plays Howard Marks, the Oxford-educated Welshman who, chaotically and bizarrely, stumbled into the game of importing hashish from Pakistan to the UK in the early 70s, back in the days when this lucrative and unexplored market was still open to gentleman amateurs.
The movie is based on the tall tales in Marks's 1996 memoir Mr Nice. That title, taken from an alias he once assumed, cheerfully invites us to take seriously the idea that he is, indeed, Mr Nice, that the drugs he was importing were the nice, soft, hippyish ones – distinct from harder substances – and that...
