Thank you, David Gordon Green, for giving Al Pacino his best role in years.
The eminent actor appears in almost every scene of Green's latest film, Manglehorn, giving Pacino plenty of time to explore the grumpy oddball A.J. Manglehorn's every mood and motivation. Rarely are an actor and role so well matched, as Pacino plays A.J. with a perfect mix of shopworn sadness, vulnerability and simmering anger. (Known for his louder performances --- Sonny in Dog Day Afternoon and Tony Montana in Scarface are only two among many -- Pacino reminds us that he has the range to play much quieter and more sensitive types.)
A.J. is the central figure in a story of loss and regret. An aging locksmith, he spends lonely days in his cluttered shop with few customers. Long divorced, he spends equally lonely nights with his cat. His self-absorbed son, Jacob (Chris Messina...

Brian T. Jaynes is the director of “Humans vs. Zombies”, one of those low-budget zombie movies that show up in the marketplace about a dozen a day. Yeah, there are a lot of them. “Humans vs. Zombies” fell somewhere in the middle between bad and okay, but it (mostly) got the job done. Jaynes’ latest is the subterranean thriller “The Underneath”, which kinda looks like a distant cousin of “The Descent” but with just two people instead of a handful of victims — er, I mean, characters. Check out the first teaser trailer for “The Underneath”. I hate tight spaces, even more so than I hate Found Footage movies (elements of which this one seems to have a little bit off toward the end of the trailer there), and this one gave me the willies. A young newlywed couple find themselves trapped in a network of underground caves. With her husband (Holt Boggs) injured,...

Brian Jaynes, the director of “Patient Zero”, is also the director of “Humans Versus Zombies”, a film that we reported on last year but I haven’t heard much from since. I think it’s played some film festivals, but according to Amazon.com, will be landing on DVD and Blu-ray on May 8th, 2012 from Hannover House. I really dug the trailers for that film, so I’m definitely looking forward to it. In any case, Jaynes apparently hasn’t gotten the whole zombie/infection kick out of his blood yet, because he’s already released the first teaser trailer for his latest, “Patient Zero”. Check it out below, zombie fans. Two young scientists are swept up in a government plot to suppress the truth about a biological disaster at a genetic research facility. Starring Amanda Phillips, Brandon Slagle, Natalie Wilemon, Jackey Hall, Frederic Doss, Carl Savering and Van Quattro.
