Much like “Hannibal,” it’s difficult to believe a show as spooky and complex as “Evil” ever aired on network television. But as the horror series about an unlikely trio investigating reports of demonic incidents for the Catholic Church debuts its entertaining final season on Paramount+, where the Robert and Michelle King-created series moved in Season 2, it’s also hard to believe the show exists anywhere, as it remains wholly unlike anything else on TV.
In Season 4, the first episode of which is now streaming, the series continues to balance its unique cases of the week with storylines involving overarching mythology, all while engaging with and exploring the personal beliefs and fears of Kristen (Katja Herbers), David (Mike Colter) and Ben (Aasif Mandvi). And then there’s that little issue of the antichrist and the fact it’s Kristen’s biological child. All of these things come together nicely...

Every parent will tell you time really does fly. As the cliche goes, one minute they are in diapers; the next, they are asking to borrow your car keys.
For its fourth season, the Apple TV+ series Trying leans into that adage. When viewers last left Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall), they formally adopted their two foster children Princess, age 10, and her brother Tyler, age six.
But when Trying returns for a fourth season on May 22, the series leaps forward six years. Princess (Scarlett Rayner) is now a 16-year-old teenager learning to drive and very curious about her birth mother. Tyler (Cooper Turner), now 12, is struggling to find friends and fit in. Nikki’s uptight sister Karen (Sian Brooke) discovered she was pregnant in the third season finale. Now that baby is six years old.

Apple TV+‘s sweetest family comedy Trying is coming back with a bit of a time jump as parents Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) deal with the growing pains of teen children. After officially adopting Princess and Tyler in Season 3—which saw the couple finally tie the knot—Nikki and Jason are six years into their marriage and parenting journey. And while their close-knit unit is solid, lingering questions direct them and their kids down some adventurous paths in Season 4. “We are six years ahead, which is quite a rare time jump in television in the comedic world,” Spall tells TV Insider. “And Princess is now a teenager and our son, Tyler, is 11. And obviously, having a teenager and kids at that age presents a lot of challenges in conventional families.” Both Princess and Tyler are played by new older actors, Scarlett Rayner and Cooper Turner. When last we saw Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) in the Apple TV+ comedy series “Trying,” the couple was trying to pull off a reverse shotgun wedding — well, sort of. The long-term partners decided they finally wanted to get married, but rather than get hitched before people knew they were pregnant, they wanted to tie the knot before their kids were taken away from them. Luckily, Nikki and Jason won their court case against their adopted children’s biological grandmother, and with that out of the way, all their worries were over.
Ok, not quite. “Trying” takes a warts-and-all approach to parenthood (if not life in general), so there will always be concerns, big and small, for the family to deal with — the key is sticking together, no matter how trying things get. Season 4 brings a fresh set of family matters, as the story jumps six years into...

At the end of Trying Season 2, Jason and Nikki had been approved to have one child, but they were left with two, putting them in quite the predicament.
"They were put into a very tricky scenario at the end of series two, which was really unexpected," Esther shares.
"Then, obviously double unexpected, because then they've got another child hidden in the boot of their car, which is going to be very surprising as we move forward."
"They're still not guaranteed the one child, really. That's taken a lot of their energy and worry."

Apple TV+‘s charming dramedy Trying is gearing up for its third season on the streamer. And it’s shaping up to be a special one as Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) enter the next phase of their life as parents to Princess (Eden Togwell) and Tyler (Mickey McAnulty). After trying to conceive a child of their own, the couple opted for the adoption process and as viewers will recall last season they found themselves housing Princess and her stowaway brother Tyler, uncertain of whether they’d get to hold onto this little family they’re hoping to create. When it comes to Season 3, Smith teases it’s “a fight to try and keep these two kids together, but also for Nikki and Jason to be approved, to have both of them.” That’s the catch, Nikki and Jason were allowed to take Princess home, but they weren...

There are lots of ways to say "I love you." This is made abundantly clear in an E! News exclusive look at season three of Apple TV+'s Trying, which debuts July 22. In the sneak peek, Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) take their foster children Princess (Eden Togwell) and Tyler (Mickey McAnulty) to the zoo and ultimately teach them about love in the process. "Did you know penguins give small rocks to each other as presents?" Nikki asks the kids. When Tyler asks for an explanation, Nikki replies, "I don't know. Maybe they don't know how to say 'I love you' yet. So, that's just what they do." Much like the penguins, Nikki and Jason are...

We're Trying not to get too excited. On May 19, Apple TV+ announced that season three of their heartwarming comedy Trying will return on July 22. Apple also unveiled a first look photo of Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall), above. Trying follows the story of Nikki and Jason’s efforts to become parents as they navigate the adoption process. The last time viewers saw the pair, they’d just become engaged and were given the opportunity to care for a young girl they’d connected with at several adoption events. (Credit: Apple TV+) Now in Season 3, the couple is waking up as new parents to two children who they are still getting to know. The hard part? Where to Watch ‘Trying’: Apple TV+
Maybe it’s trite to call couples a “team,” but if there’s one current TV couple that really earns such a description, it’s Jason Ross and Nikki Newman from the Apple TV+ series “Trying.” It makes sense, given how much of the show so far is based around the two making an attempt (few series sport a title as thesaurus-prompting as this one) to grow their family.
After finding out they can’t conceive on their own, Nikki and Jason begin the lengthy adoption process. Even against the stream of encounters with exes and roller-coaster news updates from their adoption liaison, “Trying” has its moorings in two people who keep finding ways back to each other. Rafe Spall and Esther Smith have such a playful onscreen chemistry that, along with the direction from Jim O’Hanlon...

[Editor’s Note: The following interview contains spoilers for “Trying” Season 2.]
Wedding-day antics can go wrong in any number of ways. The last episode of “Trying” Season 2 is an ending filled with surprise boyfriends, unexpected proposals, emergency news, and a first dance set to bebop jazz. Any of those things in isolation could send a TV comedy careening from light-hearted fun into disaster. But this Apple TV+ show has proven repeatedly that it can handle all the absurdity in the lives of Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) while still making their journey together feel real.
As the director of both seasons, Jim O’Hanlon has been keeping his finger on the pulse of how the shows wild twists and turns play out. Along with series writer/creator Andy Wolton, the two have found a winning, dependable test for whether or not “Trying” works: Trust the couple at the center.
“Big physical comedy can get very broad if you’re not careful.

Trying truly is one of the best shows on TV.
I don't think I've felt so many different emotions watching a TV show than I did while watching the thrilling second season, which concluded on a huge cliffhanger.
The show sensitively tackles serious topics, complete with a comedic lick of humor, and Esther Smith and Rafe Spall throw it out of the park every single episode.
Jason and Nikki learning they had been approved to get a child was just the tip of the iceberg, and their journey throughout Trying Season 2 has been filled with hurdles, but their relationship continued to go from strength to strength.
Their first meeting with Princess was always going to be difficult because they were clearly worried about whether they were worthy of being her guardians.
Adopting is not an easy process, and the series shows every single beat of the process.
It's unpredictable and can take a long time,...

Trying's comical second season continues this week on Apple TV+, and TV Fanatic has an exclusive first look.
Jason (Rafe Spall) and Nikki (Esther Smith) continue their journey to adopt on Trying Season 2 Episode 4, set to launch Friday, June 4.
The outing follows them as they go to a school to have an introduction to a potential child named Princess, and they realize straight away that this is not your typical introduction.
They learn they can't really connect with Princess and that it's best for them to act as though they are merely visitors of the school.
Jason and Nikki are understandably thrown for a loop and start to overthink the scenario, thinking about what could bring them to the school in case they are put on the spot.
They agree on surveyors checking how flat the playground is. It's a hilarious scene that also includes them preparing accents.

Genuinely happy couples are some of TV’s greatest magic tricks. So often, people in a contented relationship are used as flat foils for a pair of others caught in a dysfunctional loop. Other times, those couples’ joy is the narrative equivalent of cotton candy, empty calories designed to provide comfort and nothing else.
All of this makes “Trying” feel like that much more of an achievement, not to mention a welcome respite. The Apple TV+ comedy, debuting its Season 2 this week, revolves around Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall), two Camden residents on an extended journey to add to their family. The events of the first season eventually saw them approved by an adoption panel, and now begins the next stretch of the process.
Of course, Nikki and Jason are still not 100 percent certain in their potential parenting skills. In that way — amongst a handful of others — “Trying...

One of the most heartwarming shows on TV returns this week, and we got the chance to speak with two of its stars.
Rafe Spall and Esther Smith star on the Apple TV+ dramedy Trying, and there are many changes for Jason and Nikki as we head into the new season.
The first season was widely praised for having a lot of heart and telling important stories that resonate with viewers.
Both stars were immediately drawn to the show after reading the script.
"It was funny, warm, emotional," Spall explains, noting that he's pleased to be working on the show.
"I'm so pleased to do it so much show that I'd be happy only doing it for the rest of my career, and I'm not even being glib. It's true. I would, yeah."
"Similarly, it's such a joy of a job," Esther adds.

A little over a year ago, in the midst of the very first lockdown, we spoke to Rafe Spall and Esther Smith, about their brand new series Trying. It was one of our very first interviews conducted in the wake of a changing world, just a day or two after the Queen had addressed the nation. And now, a year on, they’re back with a second series – and we had the pleasure of speaking to them both again.
This time round, and a sign that things are improving, slowly, they were actually together in the same room (!) as we discuss the second series of this really enjoyable, and surprisingly profound comedy. They discuss the themes, and what they have learnt from their characters, or taken from their experience shooting the series, while also commenting on just how unique it is to see a comedy show explore life in the way that this show does.

“Trying” was one of those shows that seemed to arrive at just the right time last year. When most folks were stuck inside, looking for a little ray of sunlight, the Apple TV+ comedy was a welcome respite. As the show’s Season 2 trailer hints, it’s back for plenty more a year later.
The show follows Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall), a London couple having difficulty conceiving, who manage to maintain a strong relationship even as their happiness is tested. When they find out that adoption might be the only way for them to raise a child, it starts a roller coaster of high hopes and near misses and living room meetings with their filter-free rep Penny (Imelda Staunton).
