Once Quentin Tarantino is done with the 1960s, he may next head to space — specifically, the “Star Trek” universe, for a feature film potentially produced by J.J. Abrams.
Deadline is reporting that Tarantino came up with “a great idea” for a potential “Trek” film which he then pitched to Abrams. The potential plan is for Tarantino and a group of writers to develop the idea, resulting in a script that Tarantino may direct.
Abrams is of course also busy with another space-set franchise, “Star Wars Episode IX.” But his involvement would suggest that the Tarantino film would take place in what fans know as “the Kelvin-verse” and others know as “the ‘Star Trek’ movies that star Chris Pine instead of William Shatner,” though there’s no guarantee. How this might connect to the plans that are already underway for a fourth “Star Trek” Kelvin-verse film (which made news last January...

The actors whose role in a film was shot, but chopped out of the final cut...
Yep, I know. I’ve read lists like this too, and I know that Eric Stoltz was cut out of Back To The Future. If it’s all well and good, I’ll leave that example out.
See related Alien 5 to ignore Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection Alien 5: will it ever happen?
What I’ve tried to find here is a mix of reasonably known and less known instances of an actor being cut out of a film after they’ve filmed sequences for it. I’ve also tried to get to the reason they were left out as well.
Whilst all this may still sound like an exercise in clickbait, being cut out of a production does have a consequence beyond ego hurting a bit. For the side effect...

For fans of classic Star Trek who want to see quality stories done in the spirt of the original series, you have a treat this week. The consistently excellent web series Star Trek Continues has put out its eighth episode, “Still Treads the Shadow”, and as usual, it does not disappoint.
For those who’ve never seen the multi-award winning Star Trek Continues, don’t dismiss it as “just” a fan-made web show. That does the series an injustice. It’s more than that. As someone whose been a Star Trek fan for over 40 years, and grew up with William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and the rest of the original crew of the USS Enterprise, I never ceased to be amazed by how well this show captures the essence of the great show I adored in my childhood. It’s a terrific homage, made by people who love the original Star Trek.

Paramount Pictures and CBS TV have drawn a line in the sand to stop the creation of fan-made films based on Star Trek. Because of the increasing high-quality of fan projects like Star Trek Axanar, the two big corporations have initiated a series of new rules designed to limit the scope and proliferation of the many independently made Star Trek projects. Is this fair?
Independently made Star Trek projects are nothing new. The first Trek fan-made movie was filmed in Super 8 back in 1978. Since the introduction of the internet, Star Trek fan films and ongoing series have exploded in number. Within the last decade, we’ve had Trek fan series like Starship Exeter, Starship Farragut, Star Trek: Intrepid, Star Trek the New Voyages (Aka Star Trek Phase 2) and, the best one of all, Star Trek Continues, to name a few. We’ve also had full-length independent films like...

Two more sequels arrive this weekend and, like several sequels this year, both are looking to underperform when compared to the previous installment in their respective franchises. Star Trek Beyond and Ice Age: Collision Course represent the 21st and 22nd wide release sequels this year after only four (Finding Dory, Captain America: Civil War, The Purge: Election Year and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) have been able to outperform their franchise predecessor at the domestic box office. Also opening this weekend is the new PG-13 thriller Lights Out from producer James Wan as well as the moderate roll out of Fox Searchlight's Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie while Hillary's America expands nationwide into over 1,200 theaters. Targeting a first place finish is Star Trek Beyond, the third film in the rebooted franchise and the first with someone other than J.J. Abrams at the helm. Those duties fell on the shoulders of...

A lot of fans have been wondering if Paramount Pictures would recast Anton Yelchin’s Pavel Chekov in the future Star Trek films that they plan on developing. I was really hoping that they wouldn't. Yelchin owned that role in these new films, and it would have been a shame to see him replaced.
Fans can breathe a sigh of relief now because according to producer J.J. Abrams, they will not be recasting the role. During an interview with the Toronto Sun, Abrams said:
“I would say there’s no replacing him. There’s no recasting. I can’t possibly imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better.”
I think Yelchin's fans will wholeheartedly agree. There's no information on how they will handle Chekov's departure from the franchise or how they will replace the character. When asked if they would kill off the character Abrams said:

One of the more exciting moments of the 2009 Star Trek reboot was the revelation that it wasn't disregarding what came before, but starting a new timeline (now referred to as the Kelvin timeline). This transition was made easier by having Leonard Nimoy reprise his role as Spock to help guide the younger versions of the classic Star Trek characters. Given that Nimoy reprised his role, there has been hope from some fans that William Shatner may be able to do the same and return as James Kirk in a future film, despite the character dying in Star Trek: Generations; there were even several rumours that Shatner would have a role in Star Trek Beyond before the film commenced production. However, according to producer J.J. Abrams, who directed the first two installments of the new timeline, Kirk's death in Generations is the main reason for Shatner's absence. “Obviously it’s Star Trek,...

Paramount Pictures has released the final trailer for Justin Lin’s Star Trek Beyond, and it’s my favorite trailer for the film so far. It features a ton of cool new footage that is sure to get fans pumped up to see the movie. I just like the energy of the trailer; it flows a lot better than any of the previous trailer that were released.
We already have a review up for the film that you can read here, but I’ll be seeing it myself for the first time at the World Premiere at Comic-Con tomorrow night!
Along with the trailer I included two clips from the film along with another trailer that is promoting the three-screen Barco moviegoing experience, which might actually be a pretty cool way to watch the movie if there are any theaters in your area that have it.

Consider it a rumor no more: Paramount Pictures has officially confirmed plans to push ahead with Star Trek 4, with Marvel’s God of Thunder himself Chris Hemsworth on board to reprise his role as Kirk’s father, George Kirk.
News first emerged late last week when J.J. Abrams, a former director and long-time producer on Paramount’s sci-fi juggernaut, sparked rumors that Star Trek 4 was indeed a reality, though it’s only now that Hemsworth’s place on the fourth film appears to be a done deal.
Ensuring that there is still a future for the franchise after Justin Lin’s Beyond, an early logline for Star Trek 4 reveals that, “in the next installment of the epic space adventure, Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk will cross paths with a man he never had a chance to meet, but...

2009's Star Trek reboot put Chris Hemsworth on the map for most people. He's only in the movie for its opening sequence, but he used his few minutes of time to deliver an incredibly heartfelt, instantly memorable performance as the ill-fated father of a one James Tiberius Kirk. It was a small character, but one whose heroic legacy often serves as driving force for Chris Pine's James Kirk to be a better person. And now, according to J.J. Abrams, we'll be seeing...

While there’s been a lot of attention paid to the fact that this year is the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, not a lot is being been said about a movie that came out 10 years before which inspired the series. In honor of its 60thanniversary, Cinelinx looks at the sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet.
Star Trek is one of the most popular and enduring sci-fi franchises ever made. If it wasn’t for the influential 1956 film Forbidden Planet, we might never have had Star Trek. If you examine Forbidden Planet closely, you’ll see the creative aspects that inspired Gene Roddenberry while he was creating his TV masterpiece, which debuted in 1966. According to ‘Star Trek Fact Check’, Gene Roddenberry once wrote a letter asking “Would it be ethical to get a print of the film and have our people make stills from some of the appropriate frames?”

The first of these Star Trek Beyond TV spots features quite a bit of new footage and dialogue from the movie, while the others are basically just shorter versions of the previous trailers - though they do also contain some previous unseen shots here and there. In addition, it's now been confirmed that the alternate timeline introduced in J.J. Abrams' 2009 reboot will be known as the Kelvin Timeline after the starship that was destroyed by Nero (Eric Bana) in the opening scene of the film. James Kirk's father (Chris Hemsworth) was killed that day, which ultimately led to his rebellious son joining Starfleet to see if he could live up to his legacy. After stopping off at Starbase Earhart, a remote outpost on the fringes of Federation space, the USS Enterprise, halfway into their five-year mission, is destroyed by a powerful, unstoppable wave of unknown aliens. The rebooted cinematic Star Trek franchise has gotten a great deal of criticism for focusing more on action than on the social and moral theme of the 1960s TV series. One person who defends the less thought-provoking style of the modern franchise is Chris Pine, who says a cerebral Trek movie wouldn’t go over well with modern fans.
When the original Star Trek TV series debuted in 1966, creator/showrunner Gene Roddenberry insisted that the show be an allegory for socio-political and cultural issues that America was facing during that turbulent error. The show dealt metaphorically with issues like the Vietnam War, racism, woman’s rights, communism, drugs and the “hippie” culture of the late 60s; all under the guise of sci-fi stories.

With the debut today of the sixth episode of the excellent web series Star Trek Continues, Cinelinx looks at one of the most outstanding fan-fiction projects being produced today, as it reaches its third year. This show is not only a superb tribute to the original Star Trek, it’s a well-made and entertaining series in its own right.
Any fan of the original Star Trek TV series should enjoy this impressive follow-up, which continues the Five Year Mission of the USS Enterprise. It picks up after the last episode of the original show “Turnabout Intruder” (The final scene of which is recreated in a short video vignette that precedes the series) and chronicles the 4th year of Captain Kirk and his crew going where no man has gone before.

The Star Trek franchise will be 50 years old this September. It’s one of the most popular and enduring of all TV and film franchises, still going strong nearly 50 years after its debut in 1966. A third film of the rebooted series is in the works. Cinelinx looks at the ever-popular sci-fi property as it warps into its 50th year.
Star Trek, a show that didn’t do very well in the ratings when it first debuted, has become a multi-media monster. It has gone from television to cartoons, novels, comic books, video games and films. Many of the character names have become an iconic part of pop-culture. The real-life space shuttle Enterprise was named in honor of the space vessel from Star Trek. The whole concept of the sci-fi convention was begun by the fan-created ‘Trek’ conventions of the early seventies. Few franchises can claim to have had the impact...

The impact of Star Trek, a television series that altered the world's expectations and put an indelible mark on many cultures around the world, is often underestimated until you realise who it had an impact on and what they went on to achieve.
If you only ever watch 25 episodes or, rather, stories from the original(ish) run of Star Trek, these are they, at least in my opinion. The only rules in place being that this selection is drawn only from the series that just called themselves Star Trek (so that's what we now call Star Trek: The Original Series, or Tos and Star Trek: The Animated Series, or Tas), and two-part episodes count as one story... The more Trek-astute of you may realise...

Across film and TV, there have been many Star Trek projects that never got the greenlight. Such as these...
Since 1964 (yep) there have been Star Trek projects that simply didn't make it to the big or small screen. And before Star Trek's second (proper) coming in 1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the franchise had more than its fair share of attempts to come to life, and then be reborn.
This lot in fact...
Star Trek – The (original) Original Series
Here's a thought – the original Star Trek series wasn't supposed to be the original Star Trek series.
The pilot that sold the show to NBC was in fact the second pilot, after the original, entitled The Cage, filmed at the end of 1964, was deemed too cerebral. That's on top of having other multiple issues that TV executives (and test audiences) of the time couldn't cope with – you know, like gender equality in the workplace.

Long before the internet and the ‘age of the geek’, a man wearing pointy ears made it cool to be a computer whiz. Leonard Nimoy will forever be remembered as that Vulcan science officer from the starship Enterprise, Mr. Spock. Sadly, he has left this world now, but while he was here, he lived long and he prospered.
Even if you’re not a science fiction fan, everyone knows Mr. Spock. He’s one of the most recognizable TV characters ever portrayed on screen. His Vulcan salute and catchphrase “Live long and prosper” have become part of pop culture. Spock made being an outsider fashionable. Long before Wolverine became popular as the outcast among outcasts, Spock was a half-breed genius anomaly among a group of space explorers, neither fully human nor fully alien. He was the oddity of the show and people loved him for it.

Did Leonard Nimoy ever use double negatives in conversation? Did he need to consult his cellphone calculator to figure out the tip on a restaurant bill? Did he understand who put that wormhole in space in Interstellar? Most of the world might assume Nimoy possessed a mind beyond mistake and beyond melding. For a half-century - since the premiere of the classic space fantasy Star Trek on NBC in 1966 - the actor was informally regarded (and greatly loved) as one of the most rational beings on the planet, and maybe in the galaxy. If mankind were to evolve further, Nimoy,...

Two years after his U.S. debut, Hemsworth won the titular role in "Thor" (2011) and hasn't looked back since. This month, he takes aim in Michael Mann's thriller "Blackhat."

Stephen Collins has been cut from the movie Ted 2 after a recording surfaced today in which he admits to molesting several young children. The sequel to Seth MacFarlane's trash-talking teddy bear comedy is currently in production, and Collins -- best known as the minister father in the 1996-2007 WB drama 7th Heaven -- had a small role in the film, according to sources close to the project. Although the 67-year-old actor has not yet been charged with a crime, the recording of him admitting to the horrifying crimes (first published on TMZ) and the police investigation that has...

Earlier this week, we got word that William Shatner may finally be making his long-awaited return to the Star Trek franchise, as the script for Star Trek 3 apparently includes a scene that reunites Shatner and Leonard Nimoy on screen as James Kirk and Spock, respectively, for the first time since 1991′s Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
As is the case with just about anything surrounding these highly-anticipated tentpole installments, the report spread like wildfire online, which has led Star Trek 3 director Roberto Orci and Shatner himself to come forward and issue a few statements to control the situation.
While Orci refuses to commit to confirming or denying the rumor, he does leave the door open for a possible cameo. It just depends on how the film changes from now until its release. In a few messages left at TrekMovie.com, he stated:

Greg Grunberg is teaming up with his childhood friend J.J. Abrams again, the former dropping a tweet indicating that he's set to have a cameo in the upcoming "Star Wars: Episode VII".
Grunberg has been with Abrams for sometime. He was a regular on the Abrams-produced "Felicity" and "Alias," had a cameo as the pilot of the ill-fated Oceanic Flight 815 in "Lost," and had small appearances in "Mission: Impossible III," "Super 8" and even "Star Trek" (he was the voice of James Kirk's stepfather). "My contribution dealt mostly with Spock's ship. I played a little visual pun in designing the cockpit - the triangle intersecting the circle is a reference to the Vulcan Idic symbol from the original television show. And since the character's identity is still a mystery at this point in the film, I wanted this to be a tip off to all the Trekkies in the audience." - Nathan Schroeder The greatest adventure of all time begins with Star Trek, the incredible story of a young crew’s maiden voyage onboard the most advanced starship ever created: the U.S.S. Enterprise. On a journey filled with action, comedy and cosmic peril, the new recruits must find a way to stop an evil being whose mission of vengeance threatens all of mankind. The fate of the galaxy rests in the hands of bitter rivals. One, James Kirk (Chris Pine), is a delinquent,...

New skipper of high-tech vessel USS Zumwalt shares a name with TV starship commander played by William Shatner
Captain Kirk's futuristic-looking ship sports cutting-edge technology, new propulsion and powerful armaments – but it isn't the Starship Enterprise. The skipper of the USS Zumwalt is Navy Captain James Kirk, and yes, he's used to the jokes about the name he shares with the TV starship commander played by William Shatner.
"I don't take any offense," he told The Associated Press. "If it's a helpful moniker that brings attention to help us to do what we need to do to get the ship into the fleet and into combat operations, then that's fine."
The technology-laden Zumwalt, which is taking shape at Maine's Bath Iron Works, is unlike any other Us warship. The navy's largest destroyer will feature a composite deckhouse with hidden radar and sensors and an angular shape that minimizes its radar signature.

One of the best perks of working for SciFiMafia.com is the opportunity to speak with some wonderfully gifted actors, and recently I had the opportunity to talk exclusively with an actor from one of my top ten movies. Although he’s been in a number of TV series and movies, if you’re a sci-fi fan you’ll definitely recognize Faran Tahir; he has such a presence. He was the terrorist Raza in Iron Man, the regent Adwin Kosan on Warehouse 13, and he may have run down Sayid’s great love Nadia on Lost, amongst other roles.
But the role that he will always embody for me is as the captain of the Kelvin at the beginning of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek – the man who handed the helm over to James Kirk’s dad before transporting to the Romulan ship. You know.

This week's comedy news
Not for the first time, the Us comedian Sarah Silverman has become embroiled in a political row, after a Democratic representative retweeted her stated desire to "anally probe" the governor of Wisconsin – in response to his having signed off new anti-abortion legislation. Governor Scott Walker's law would require women considering abortions to have ultrasound scans. Silverman tweeted that "I'd very much like to anally probe @govwalker each time he needs to make an 'informed decision'" – a comment retweeted by Colorado politician Joe Salazar. At that, Republicans cried foul: "It's fine to disagree with Gov Walker," fulminated a Colorado Republican Committee spokesman in a party press release, "but it's not Ok for Joe Salazar to call for the governor to be raped.

Two of the small moons orbiting around Pluto have been given names. The International Astronomical Union, the group responsible for these kinds of things, has chosen "Kerberos" and "Styx" as suitable names for the moons, Space.com reports.
Of course, the decision wasn't made without a little controversy. The Iau chose names based on a poll sponsored by Seti (the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence). However, neither of those names got the most votes. In fact, the top pick was Vulcan, which is the home planet of Spock (Leonard Nimoy) on "Star Trek."
The name was suggested by William Shatner (Captain James Kirk, himself) as a possibility, before "Trek" fans took the ball and ran with it. Out of the 500,000 votes cast, Vulcan tallied around 170,000.
With fans of the franchise upset about being denied, Seti released a statement. They say the Iau considered the name, but rejected it for a couple of reasons.

This weekend, Star Trek Into Darkness hits theaters and the common consensus among reviewers seems to be that Jj Abrams' adaptation of the beloved series is even better this time around. The thing we're most excited about, of course, is Zoe Saldana's return as a young Nyota Uhura. Apparently Saldana's role is much bigger this time around, which means the Star Trek sequel is a can't miss for us!
Of course, lesbian and bisexual women are not strangers to the world of science fiction. In fact, we often find better representation in the fantasy realm than in any other genre. And even when we don't find queer women to swoon over, we find powerful women to root for.

-- "Star Trek Into Darkness" is like fan-boy fiction on a $185 million budget. It's reverential, it's faithful, it's steeped in "Trek" mythology.
It's also an excessively derivative what-if rehash of themes and interactions that came before, most of the characters lesser copies and even caricatures of the originals. The scenario's been hijacked and rejiggered from better "Trek" plots of decades ago, the best verbal exchanges lifted nearly verbatim from past adventures.
In short, the new chiefs of Starfleet aren't coming up with much to call their own.
They pile on the spectacle in a way that's never been seen before in "Star Trek," whose old big-screen incarnations were so notoriously underfunded they had to go back and borrow props, miniatures and visual effects from previous installments. The action in "Into Darkness" is top-notch, the visuals grand, though the movie's needless conversion to 3-D muddies the images.

The publicity people for Star Trek Into Darkness sure know how to do this well. The more they give us, the more I want. And I want it now. This latest clip is particularly challenging, because we need to know what Benjamin Harrison is talking about. Well, also what James Kirk is talking about. Argh, Come On May!

A second full clip has been released for the upcoming "Star Trek Into Darkness." Monday (April 22) saw Captain James Kirk (Chris Pine) contemplating a rescue mission for Spock (Zachary Quinto). The new clip features the two, along with with Uhura (Zoe Saldana) and other crew mates, on the run from a hostile force.
As their shuttle is rapidly approaching a wall, Kirk finds a very small opening and decides the ship will fit. Always the logical one, Spock tells him it will not, which Kirk argues, piloting the ship into a crack in the wall. The enemy ship that is chasing them stops, as it's far too big.
The Enterprise crew makes it through the small opening, but not without bumping off the walls a few times and nearly crashing. Once on the other side, Kirk triumphantly proclaims "I told you we'd fit." Spock isn't impressed, of course.

A new character poster for Star Trek Into Darkness has been released.
Following the individual images for Zachary Quinto's Spock, Zoe Saldana's Uhura and Benedict Cumberbatch's John Harrison, this fourth and final poster focuses on Chris Pine's Captain James Kirk.
Pine has teased that Jj Abrams's sequel will see Kirk forced to "face his own vulnerability" and earn his position as captain of the Enterprise.
Scripted by Damon Lindelof, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the sequel sees Kirk and his crew enlisted to defend the Earth against Harrison, a former Starfleet employee who has become a one-man weapon of mass destruction.
Lindelof has said that Star Trek Into Darkness is about the crew "becoming a family", while Abrams has stated that his goal with the sequel is "to make you cry".

Chris Pine has admitted that he was not keen to audition for Star Trek.
Pine played James Kirk in Jj Abrams's 2009 reboot of the franchise, but was initially sceptical when his agent suggested the role.
"I wasn't a fan of Star Trek," the actor told Esquire. "It didn't excite me. All I wanted at that time was a part that I really connected to.
"When my agent said Star Trek, I said, 'No! Have you not been hearing anything I've said? Star Trek is the furthest thing from what I want to do.'"
Pine went on to discuss his relative lack of screen idol status, joking that he was overshadowed by co-star Benedict Cumberbatch during interactions with fans.

Thursday brings the longest trailer yet for "Star Trek Into Darkness." It shows the film's villain (Benedict Cumberbatch) declaring war on Starfleet, an organization he once belonged to. Of course Captain James Kirk (Chris Pine) knows he must be stopped, and assembles his team to go after the man.
The big reveal of the trailer is the woman who will be Kirk's love interest, Dr. Carol Marcus. Marcus, played by British actress Alice Eve, was first introduced in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," and also happens to be the mother of Kirk's only known child. So the links between "Into Darkness" and "Wrath of Khan" continue to grow.
Officially, Cumberbatch's villain is known as John Harrison, however speculation has been running rampant that the character is, in fact, Khan. So much of the movie has been kept tightly under wraps, that if Cumberbatch turns out to be the well-known villain,...

Los Angeles — Ben Affleck's "Argo," a film about a fake movie, has earned a very real prize: best picture at the Academy Awards. From the White House, First Lady Michelle Obama joined Jack Nicholson to help present the final prize. "There are eight great films that have every right, as much a right to be up here as we do," Affleck said of the other best-picture nominees. In share-the-wealth mode, Oscar voters spread Sunday's honors among a range of films, with "Argo" winning three trophies but "Life of Pi" leading with four. Daniel Day-Lewis joined a select group of recipients with his third Oscar, taking the best-actor trophy for his monumental performance as Abraham Lincoln in the Civil War saga "Lincoln." The 85th Academy Awards got off to a funny start. While delivering his opening monologue, Seth MacFarlane got a special visit from Captain James Kirk, with William Shatner reprising the role, warning him he was going to ruin the Oscars.
That, of course, lead to MacFarlane singing a song. Unlike the year-in-review song they've done way too many times, MacFarlane sang a tribute to famous actresses and their boobs. In "We Saw Your Boobs," MacFarlane listed off a bunch of Hollywood's top actresses, along with the movies they've appeared in topless.
The actresses named included Meryl Streep, Naomi Watts, Nicole Kidman, Halle Berry, and Anne Hathaway. Kate Winslet had the biggest portion of the song, as she has appeared topless quite a few times, and MacFarlane took the opportunity to name just about every movie of hers he could.
The star of the bit was, though, was Jennifer Lawrence. When...
