Slamdance announced the winners of its 2022 screenplay competition, with the grand prize going to writer Gabriel Malasig for his screenplay titled “American Retail.” The screenplay follows a Black woman as she struggles to supplement her music career through a dead-end retail job at a superstore.
Additional prizes were awarded during a live ceremony that took place at the Nuart Theatre and co-presented by the Writers Guild of America West and Landmark Theatres on Sunday. Slamdance recognizes writers in its feature film, horror/thriller, TV pilot, short film and mentorship categories. More than 18,000 in prizes, in addition to various industry services, are awarded to winners across all categories.
“We received over 4,200 screenplay submissions this year,” said festival manager Lily Yasuda. “Our readers were blown away by the quality of scripts this year, and our winners exemplify everything we look for in a screenplay: bold, original and unafraid to tackle complex social issues head-on.

Women in Film, Los Angeles and The Black List announced the participants of the 2020 Feature Lab and Residency on Monday.
The program is an expansion of the organizations’ original writing lab, providing mentorship and career opportunities to seven emerging women screenwriters over the course of a year. This year’s intensive script and professional development sessions will initially take place in online sessions to adhere to social distancing regulations. Participants will have meetings and receive feedback from working feature writers, executives and industry leaders.
“I very much look forward to the year that doing two writing labs with Wif with only women participants makes no rational sense, because women represent at least 50 percent of the working screenwriters in film and at every level of television,” Black List founder Franklin Leonard said in a statement. “We clearly have a long way to go, and so until then are committed to our ongoing work with Wif,...

Austin-based filmmaker Elizabeth Chatelain remembered the event that made her realize how detached she and her elder sister had become. Her documentary and University of Texas radio-tv-film graduate thesis, My Sister, Sarah, explores their relationship and her sister's battle with drug addiction.
Chatelain had returned home to Fargo in 2007 after graduating from Middlebury College in Vermont. The 22-year-old's homecoming was cut short when she, her mother and brother stopped by her estranged sister's apartment to persuade her to go to the hospital. When her sister Sarah Chatelain-Jamz finally opened the door for her brother, after refusing her mother, her physical appearance was astounding. After combating drug addiction for years, Chatelain-Jamz had relapsed.
"I saw her and it was like seeing this other person," Chatelain said. "It's not the person you have grown up with; it's not the person that you just had a conversation with on the phone. She was...
