From “Gravity ” and “Wild” to “The Way Back” and “Jaws,” the most compelling survival movies fearlessly examine characters’ will to live, imbuing their perilous struggles with the intensely personal motivations and desires that make every person unique. These stories allow audiences to consider what specific obstacles along one person’s quest for survival and happiness say about humanity writ large. What’s more, they challenge viewers to look inward and consider what truly matters when the chips are down.
The best survival films immerse viewers in life-or-death scenarios, balancing realism and believability with slow-burn suspense. Even in lighter survival fare, such as “Swiss Family Robinson,” filmmakers have to keep up the pace and pressure to deliver the subgenre’s characteristic urgency. Sure, “Cast Away,” “The Revenant,” and epic sagas like them are sweeping in scope with the lengthy running times to match. But survival stories work best when every frame...

If you have watched Tom Hank’s “Captain Philips” movie, the scene where his characters cargo ship is hijacked must have caught your eye as it is not that easy to forget. The film is a true story of the gripping moments that Captain Richard Phillips faced in 2009 when his Alabama Maersk container ship was hijacked by Somali pirates as depicted by Paul Greengrass. In reality, Hanks first met the debuting actors when they were shooting the scenes of the hijacking incident. For three days, the captain stayed captive in a lifeboat. It was not until the Navy Seals came

There are very few actors working in Hollywood today that have the ability to do literally anything. Most become synonymous with a particular genre, and coast along in their comfort zone. Some occasionally dip into new material, but soon retreat to the familiar. Then there’s two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks.
As a performer, Hanks has successfully hopped between comedy, drama, thriller, and sci-fi; he’s skipped between time periods, and has played multiple roles in the same movie. In his 36 year career, he has reached the status of ‘Go-to true story lead’ – which means that we can hardly imagine any biopic or cinematic rendering of heroism or drama, without Hanks in the notable role. Of course, Tom Hanks is the man to play Jim Lovell – stoically leading an ill-fated mission to the moon. But, he’s also the man to play the alcoholic, womanizing Texas congressman Charlie Wilson – manipulating U.

Here we are again after the Golden Globes, Mike Fleming and Anita Busch taking on the task of play by play during the most wide-open Oscar race we can remember. Even on the party circuit, industry insiders who usually have a grasp of who’ll walk away with Oscars were evenly torn between Alfonso Cuaron’s 3D masterpiece Gravity and Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave. Then again, there were so many terrific films that got Best Picture nominations, and all of them have at least a puncher’s chance at an upset. Related: Oscars: Pete Hammond’s Absolute Final Predictions That includes American Hustle, where David O Russell co-wrote the Best Original Script nominee with Eric Warren Singer and got tour de force performances and nominations for Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. Perfs so strong there was no room on the nomination roster for perennial Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner.

Not only will Tom Hanks be going home without an Academy Award this Sunday night, but he also failed to earn a nomination. How he managed to get overlooked for his breathtaking performance in Paul Greengrass’ masterful Captain Phillips I’ll never know, but it’s absolutely ridiculous that he wasn’t even recognized.
To hammer home that fact just a little more, the film’s ending has appeared online today to remind us just how powerful Hanks’ performance was. Of course, it contains spoilers, so if you haven’t seen Captain Phillips yet you might want to hold off on watching clip, and reading the rest of this article.
The scene I’m referring to takes place after an intense, two hour hostage situation that involves Hanks’ Captain Richard Phillips on a lifeboat with Somali pirates. Eventually, Phillips is rescued by Navy Seals and taken into a medical station aboard their ship.

Paul Greengrass’s tense picaroon thriller is James Thompson‘s choice, and here he makes his case.
It is often the case that among the contenders for the Best Picture at the Annual Academy Awards there are a handful of entries that warrant your backing and truly epitomise the true majesty of cinema. For me, despite yet again playing host to a number of truly inspiring films, this year plays host to just one film that fully deserves the most coveted of all awards; that film is Paul Greengrass’ Captain Phillips.

A textbook example of how to make an action/adventure movie, Captain Phillips represents a triumph for director Paul Greengrass and star Tom Hanks. The acclaimed film closely follows the real life story of Richard Phillips, the American merchant marine captain who was assigned in 2009 to navigate a massive cargo vessel laden with millions of dollars of goods as well as humanitarian supplies through the Horn of Africa. This necessitated that the vessel had to tempt fate by entering waters in which Somali pirates had been terrifying ship's crews and often holding them hostage for ransom. As fate would have it, Phillips and his crew found themselves menaced by a skiff of heavily armed pirates who managed to board their vessel despite gallant attempts to thwart them. (The film only minimally discusses the self-defeating policy of sending crews into harm's way without so much as small arms to defend themselves.

Her and Captain Phillips were the winners at this year's Writers Guild of America (WGA) Awards.
Spike Jonze won the prize for Best Original Screenplay for Her, a film he also directed.
Meanwhile, Billy Ray won Best Adapted Screenplay for Tom Hanks thriller Captain Phillips, based on a true story of a cargo ship hijacked by Somali pirates.
Ray said he owed the film's success to real-life counterpart Captain Richard Phillips, saying: "It's really Captain Phillips who wrote this story, I just wrote it down."
Jonze's story of a man (Joaquin Phoenix) who falls in love with a computer-generated voice also won a Golden Globe for its screenplay last month.
The filmmaker said: "It's a high honour coming from writers.
"I was thinking about how in a way it's like an award for pain. It's a specific pain that writers know and it's the highs and lows of sitting in there by yourself.

One of my top ten films of 2013 was A Hijacking, a little-seen Danish film that, similarly to Paul Greengrass’s Captain Phillips, turns a spotlight on what happens when a group of Somali pirates take over a cargo ship in the Indian Ocean. However, almost everything else about the two films is different.
A Hijacking revels in searingly tense silences, exploring the devastating human cost of the hijacking for the hostages, pirates and negotiators back in Copenhagen. Conversely, Captain Phillips moves at a frenetic pace, jumping from tense confrontation to tense confrontation without allowing its audience opportunity to take a single breath. A Hijacking digs into the pirates’ motives and spreads its focus to three different men, while Captain Phillips is undoubtedly a biopic, laser-focused on giving lead actor Tom Hanks the chance to bring a true American hero to life. One film zeroes in on minute details, while the...

Welcome back to This Week In Discs! If you see something you like, click on the title to buy it from Amazon. Captain Phillips Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks) knows his job captaining freighters through dangerous waters is a risky endeavor, but the pay is well worth the very slight possibility of pirates. At least it was before pirates board and take control of the ship. From that point on Phillips finds himself struggling to keep himself and the crew alive. Director Paul Greengrass‘ latest film is based on a true story, but even if you know the outcome it remains a suspenseful and exciting adventure. Acting is strong across the board (and on-board), but the highlight is Hanks delivering the most authentic and affecting five minutes of the past several years. You’ll know it when you see it, and your eyes will wet themselves. [Blu-ray/DVD extras: Commentary, making of] Bullet in the Face: The Complete Series Pitch: ”From The...

In the fury of awards season, great films that arrived with strong buzz and critical plaudits can get lost if they arrived earlier in the year. One film that was released in October, but still holds on with strong sea legs is “Captain Phillips” (it’s scored recent DGA, PGA and Golden Globe nominations). Directed by Paul Greengrass and starring Tom Hanks, this in-the-moment thriller is a harrowing drama based on the true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the Us-flagged Maersk Alabama. The movie also boasts the debut screen appearance of Barkhad Abdi, the lead Somali pirate in the movie before who had never acted professionally before in his life. As reviews and awards from the critical season will attest (our review here), Abdi is a revelation and he gives as good as he gets alongside Hanks. While there’s an excellent supporting cast,...

At a recent Screen Actors Guild interview I did with Leonardo DiCaprio, the audience cheered long and hard for his swaggering tour de force in Martin Scorsese's admittedly divisive The Wolf of Wall Street. In this true story of Jordan Belfort, a douchey New York broker with the toxic talent to sell you nightmares disguised as dreams, DiCaprio, 39, won some of the best reviews of his career. With Oscar nominations a week away, the big question is: Can DiCaprio make the cut? Right now five actors are considered locks:...

As with any year, some people have begun arguing that 2013 was a bad year for film, because of the expected glut of effects-heavy blockbusters that litter the multiplexes each summer, or because there was a lack of auteur-driven storytelling for the majority of the year. Though it is indeed frustrating that studios hold their more prestigious films until the last month or two of this or any year, 2013 was an excellent year for film. You shouldn’t have to look first to Sound on Sight’s list of the 30 best films of 2013 for proof, but you should add it to the pile, no doubt. We asked our film writers to provide their personal lists of the 15 best films of the year; everyone’s number-one pick got 15 points allocated, everyone’s number-two pick got 14 points, and so on. (As you’ll see, the point values for each of the 30 films is included here.

Exactly a year ago, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opened in the UK with £9.51m, plus £2.1m in previews. Many critics carped that the film didn't live up to Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, and sounded a note of scepticism over the innovative 48 frames-per-second projection. Still, audiences continued to embrace the film, and a final gross of £52.33m represented a healthy 5.5 multiple of the opening number – a relatively high ratio for a Hollywood blockbuster.

The star of Captain Phillips and Saving Mr. Banks will receive the 25th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival’s (Psiff) Chairman’s Award at the annual awards gala on January 4 2014.
“Tom Hanks is one of the greatest actors of his generation,” said festival chairman Harold Matzner. “In a remarkable feat that vividly illustrates the range of his talent, this year he portrayed two real-life characters, each a powerhouse performance in its own right.
“In the film Captain Phillips, he plays Richard Phillips, the captain of a ship hijacked by pirates, while in Saving Mr. Banks he plays Walt Disney trying to turn the book Mary Poppins into a film – two roles that couldn’t be more divergent.”
Previous recipients of the Chairman’s Award include Ben Affleck, George Clooney, Richard Gere, Dustin Hoffman and Nicole Kidman.
Psiff is scheduled to run from January 3-13 2014.

Filming on a gargantuan cargo ship and a claustrophobic rescue craft, Greengrass brought together real-life Somalis and the Oscar-winning Tom Hanks for gripping drama and bravura performances on the high seas. The director, the star and the intrepid Barkhad Abdi, in his first acting role, spoke to TheWrap about the experience. Sharon Waxman What interested you in making “Captain Phillips?...

The Furrowed Eyebrow. The Slo-Mo 360-Eye-Roll. The Wince. The Something-Smells Nose-Scrunch. And the Dead-Eye Jaw-Drop. Chances are, you have your own versions of these faces, perfected from years of watching mediocre movies and television where words are strung together in a truly unholy manner by actors — who may be either victim or willing accomplice to the writer — delivering a metaphorical gut-punch to the audience that makes you go, “Oof.”
Fortunately, our brains have a natural tendency to quickly forget the worst lines in a movie. (It’s a survival mechanism.) But every now and then, a turd refuses to be flushed.

The real-life story of the hijacking of an American cargo ship by Somali pirates lends itself well to an action-packed adventure film. Director Paul Greengrass offers a dramatic and theatrical modern-day pirate story from Billy Ray’s screenplay, based on the book by Captain Richard Phillips. But the intense and emotional story that found the title character kidnapped at sea wasn’t the only challenge facing casting director Francine Maisler. With Tom Hanks already attached as Captain Phillips, Maisler knew the real challenge would be finding actors to play the pirates. Since the film was based on true events, one important factor in casting was authenticity. “I don’t think there was ever a question of wanting to find real Somali men for our pirates,” says Maisler. “Regardless of the name level of the rest of the cast, we were all committed to authenticity.” Casting a wide net for the search,...

The Mv Maersk Alabama is a cargo ship on east African routes. It has been subject to several attempted pirate attacks and hijackings, most notably in April 2009, when Captain Richard Phillips was taken hostage.
People
