“Billy Club” is bringing horror to the supposedly-innocent world of little league baseball. Filmmakers Drew Rosas and Nick Sommer have used their love for vintage horror to create a brand new way to scare audiences (as well as a brand new iconic killer in the form of an umpire). ShockYa was happy to speak with Rosas and Sommer about the film, their inspirations and their favorite horror films. “Billy Club” will come to VOD and DVD Nov. 11. One of the interesting things about the film is that the killer has a lot of motive to go after his former little league team members. How was it for you guys [ Read More ]

I’ve always had a soft spot for slashers with a decent gimmick, so I was delighted when Billy Club‘s penchant for baseball-related violence was revealed. Too many horror movies are content to stick to the humdrum formula of having a nondescript masked killer stalk the nubile teens of Camp Lake Name with no more of a unifying theme than having surfboard impalements be the chief cause of death; not so this film. Here bats, balls, diamonds and even – especially – pitching machines all have a central role to play in the slaughter of Billy Club’s innocent-but-not-quite-so-innocent victims, and the movie is all the more enjoyable for it, despite some ultimately negligible production flaws.
But I’m getting ahead of myself. The film’s story chiefly takes place...

Your mileage may vary, but for this horror fan, filmmakers making a sincere effort to deliver a fun, nostalgic slasher pic on a shoestring budget deserve points for effort, even if the results are uneven. An effort that fits that description is Billy Club, which had its world premiere during the Milwaukee Film Festival. It’s raw and flawed and feels like the work of young filmmakers, but it shows promise and has enough going for it to merit viewing.
In 1996, Bobby Spooner (Marshall Caswell) returns to his small Wisconsin hometown after many years away. He quickly hooks up with childhood friends Allison (Erin Hammond), Kyle (Nick Sommer), and Danny (Max Williamson). As kids they played on the same Little League team 15 years prior. After tormenting teammate Billy Haskins for striking out to end a big game, young Billy took revenge by savagely killing two players and the coach. His...

Attempting to create a new horror icon from scratch is a daunting task, but that’s exactly what the filmmakers behind the new independent slasher pic Billy Club are trying to do. Written and directed by Drew Rosas and Nick Sommer, who also made the Troma release Blood Junkie, their latest breaks down like this:
“Fifteen years after a gruesome triple homicide devastated their Little League baseball team, four friends reunite to commemorate their dead coach and fallen teammates. A mystery unfolds as the secrets from their past return to haunt them and a vengeful killer, hidden by an antique umpire's mask, returns to even the score.”
Shock Till You Drop spoke with Rosas about the balance between paying homage and crafting something new, developing their killer’s look, the challenges of making an indie film far from Hollywood, and more.

Blood Junkie You remember watching films like Death Proof and Planet Terror that are supposed to be homages to the films of the yesteryear? While watching them, they certainly evoke the past, but you never truly forget that they are a modern day movie. That's what makes Drew Rosas debut feature length horror film, Blood Junkie (aka Rocky Trails), different. See the actors, the humor, the clothing, the attitudes, the way that the film was made, all make you believe that you are truly watching a forgotten or lost horror film from the 80's. And he accomplished this on a budget of just $7000! Blood Junkie deals with teenage girls who along with a younger brother drag themselves to the woods to have a camping party with two high school graduates. However, the party of their lives is about to get cut short by an uninvited serial killer. Blood Junkie was...

Group of kids camping out are stalked and killed by a maniac.
Fun, but nothing new story wise that the slasher sub-genre hasn't seen before a million times already. However, Blood Junkie manages to set itself apart from the pack with its throwback to the style of the 80's. Blood Junkie looks and feels as though it was made in the 80's. The way that the characters look, the way that they act is spot on. Blood Junkie amusingly captures the inherent humor of the clothes, the style, the behaviors and even the exercise tapes of the era. However, Blood Junkie is more successful as a throwback to the 80's over being an actual slasher film. The slasher elements are introduced rather late into the film's brief running time. The slasher bits,...
