Back in 2016, Pokémon Go took the world by storm with its simple yet addictive gameplay loop. At the height of its popularity, in fact, you couldn’t get through a single day without seeing Niantic’s mobile game make the headlines. Catching ‘Em All, it turned out, became an infinitely more entertaining pastime when Pokéfans were able to share their adventures with other players while out and about on their daily travels. Parks, bars, libraries – you name it, the craze was everywhere, though not every public space was happy to see the masses glued to their phones.
In fact, it didn’t take long before reports of incredible stupidity prompted that wave of goodwill to rapidly diminish. Tales of players trespassing on private property and playing while driving circulated like wildfire, prompting Niantic to introduce warnings in-game to combat such instances. Thankfully, as the fad period has tapered off and...

Even if you’re not a horror-film fanatic, you’ve heard about The Hunt. A grisly-looking, modern grindhouse film, it was supposed to come out through Universal Pictures at the end of September. The plot was said to feature wealthy liberals — as portrayed by Hilary Swank’s well-dressed villain — who kidnap jus’-folks types and put them into a forested compound where they’re picked off one by one. Originally titled, per The Hollywood Reporter, Red State vs. Blue State, the movie seems to boast a comparable mixture of paranoia,...

Turkey Bowl is a movie that most people will unfortunately never see because it's the kind of film that rarely screens outside of festivals -- a 62-minute movie about some old friends playing an annual game of touch football, shot in real time, helmed by a guy whose IMDb page only otherwise lists a few shorts, and filled with a cast of almost entirely unknowns. It sounds like the kind of thing that would be included as a DVD extra on the disc of a later film by writer/director Kyle P. Smith. Whether it makes it out into the world that way or some other way, hopefully it just gets out there so that more folks do get a chance to see it, because Turkey Bowl is a wonderful little flick, a funny look at coping with your old friendships as your older life moves on.

Director: Kyle P. Smith Writer: Kyle P. Smith Starring: Morgan Beck, Adam Benic, Kerry Bishé, Troy Buchanan, Tom Dimenna, Zeke Hawkins, Zoe Perry, Jon Schmidt, Bob Turton, Sergio Villarreal It is the middle of the Summer and it is time for the Turkey Bowl; the winner even gets a Butterball turkey. A group of eight post-grad friends take off from their respective jobs and get together and play touch football once a year...and this year two strangers join them. There seems to be a lot of tension going on within the group. Apparently, this is one of those events that past friends get together on a yearly basis merely out of a sense of obligation and possibly to keep track of one another even after they have grown apart. They might recollect why they were once friends (if they ever were), but it is very clear that their lives have since changed.
