The second season of Wolf Hall has created headlines in the UK for its diverse casting — and the latest to speak out is an ancestor of one of the Tudor drama’s characters.
Journalist Petronella Wyatt has written a column in The Daily Telegraph questioning the “absurd” decision to cast Egyptian-born Amir El-Masry as Yorkshireman Thomas Wyatt.
The character was played by Slow Horses star Jack Lowden in Season 1 of the BBC/PBS Masterpiece drama, which premiered in 2015.
Wyatt praised The Crown star El-Masry’s acting credentials, but said color-blind casting for a story rooted in British history was tantamount to “cultural appropriation.”
She said Thomas Wyatt, a 16th-century English politician credited with inventing the sonnet, had “never been east of Calais” in his lifetime.

Andrew Garfield was apparently overheard telling off local residents for “distracting” him while filming in London.
The Amazing Spider-Man star is currently shooting the romcom We Live In Time with Florence Pugh in south-west London.
Garfield was filming a scene outside a block of flats, with local residents who lived in a flat opposite gathering at the window to watch filming taking place.
However, one of the housemates told The Daily Telegraph that Garfield “called ‘cut’ as soon as he saw the group” before asking to talk to them through the window.
Remaining anonymous, the resident told the publication that the group had initially “rushed over to the window, and there’s four of us in the house vying for position in front of one window, pushing each other out of the way – it was a bit silly”.

On the day that Mark Rylance video-calls from Pittsburgh, where his wife, Claire van Kampen, is directing an opera, the news is dominated by the death of Hilary Mantel. Rylance, now 62, played a furtive, whispering Thomas Cromwell in the BBC adaptation of Mantel’s Wolf Hall in 2015. Prior to that, he was revered for stage roles such as Johnny “Rooster” Byron, the uncouth mystic layabout in Jerusalem, which brought him his third Tony award.
It was Wolf Hall, though, that made him a household name in households that never went to the theatre. Roger Waters has denied claims that he has cancelled his forthcoming concerts in Poland amid backlash to his comments on Ukraine.
Local news outlets had reported that the Pink Floyd bassist had pulled two gigs in Krakow in April, following outrage over a letter in which he blamed “extreme nationalists” for having “set [Ukraine] on the path to this disastrous war”.
Venue official Lukasz Pytko said that Waters’ manager had “decided to withdraw” the shows “without giving any reason”.
In a statement shared on Facebook on Sunday (25 September), Waters said that “assertions that either, I or my management, has cancelled my forthcoming shows in Krakow” were “wrong”.

The House of the Dragon showrunner has sad news for fans who want to see Milly Alcock back on the show.
Alcock played the young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in the first five episode of HBO’s prequel spin-off series.
Despite praise for Emma D’Arcy’s performance as the adult version of the character in episode six, which aired on Sunday (26 September), viewers had been lamenting the looming departure of Alcock since her debut.
Considering 10 years passed in the show between episodes five and six, many fans are holding out hope for a flashback later this season, meaning they would be able to see Alcock return as the character.
However, according to Ryan Condal, viewers will most probably not be seeing Alcock in the role for a long time, if ever. Speaking to Variety, he said that season two is completely mapped out, and it won’t feature Alcock or indeed Emily Carey,...

Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield’s names weren’t on the media list to see the Queen lying-in-state, a new report has claimed.
The This Morning presenters have found themselves at the middle of a scandal – dubbed “queuegate” – after they were accused of “jumping the queue” to see the Queen’s coffin lying-in-state before her funeral.
Willoughby and Schofield denied the accusations, saying that they would “never jump a queue”. Despite this, more than 71,000 people have signed a petition calling on ITV to “axe” the presenters over the alleged queue-jumping.
However, according to new reports, Willoughby and Schofield’s names were not on the accreditation list in the first place, causing a “hoo-ha” at the lying-in-state.
Speaking to The Mail on Sunday, a source involved in processing the media list claimed that members of the production team’s names were used instead.

Roger Waters has reportedly cancelled concerts planned in Poland amid outrage over his stance on Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Earlier this month, the Pink Floyd co-founder penned an open letter to Ukraine’s first lady Olena Zelenska in which he blamed “extreme nationalists” for having “set your country on the path to this disastrous war”.
Waters has previously branded Joe Biden a “war criminal” for “fuelling the fire in the Ukraine”.
On Saturday (24 September), Polish media reported that Waters’ forthcoming concerts at the Tauron Arena in Krakow in April would no longer be taking place.
Venue official Lukasz Pytko said that Waters’ manager had “decided to withdraw” the shows “without giving any reason”.
However, Waters has since issued a statement claiming that neither he or his management were responsible for the shows being pulled.
The website for Waters’ This Is Not a Drill concert tour no longer lists the previously scheduled Krakow concerts.

The new series kicked off on Saturday (24 September) as all 15 couples danced together for the first time.
You can find out about all the couples competing on Strictly 2022 here.
Second to dance were Kiss FM DJ Tyler West and his professional partner Dianne Buswell, who performed the American Smooth to “Falling” by Harry Styles.
The couple received a mixed reception from the judges, but were praised by head judge Ballas, who said that West “just put [Buswell] in the most beautiful space” and gave them a standing ovation.
She also said that the couple created a “beautiful” atmosphere.
When it came to the scoring, however, Ballas could be seen reaching around under her table for her paddle.
“I’m putting up a seven,” she said, despite the score on the screen read as a six.

Richard Ayoade and the cast of Have I Got News For You have ripped into the “national scandal” surrounding the alleged This Morning queue jump.
Presenters Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield were accused of “skipping the queue” to see the Queen’s coffin lying in state before her funeral on Monday (19 September) while filming for This Morning.
Willoughby and Schofield denied the accusations, saying that they would “never jump a queue”.
At the time of writing, nearly 70,000 people have signed a petition calling on ITV to “axe” the presenters over the alleged queue-jumping.
During Friday (23 September) night’s episode of Hignfy, host Ayoade joked that the “national scandal” was “the biggest thing that’s happened” this week.
“ITV’s Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield… apparently just appeared in Westminster Hall on Sunday without having spent the previous 36 hours queueing,” Ayoade said.
“Just appeared? Like a haunting?” comedian Roisin Conaty asked.

Kosminsky directed the Golden Globe-winning BBC and PBS drama “Wolf Hall,” and the pair have been collaborating more recently on a BBC adaptation of “The Mirror and the Light,” which covers the last four years of the life of Thomas Cromwell (played by Mark Rylance...

The worlds of publishing and screen have paid tribute to author Hilary Mantel, who died on Thursday (Sept. 22) at the age of 70.
Peter Kosminsky, who directed the BBC adaptation of Mantel’s novel “Wolf Hall,” told Variety: “A great light has gone out. The word ‘great’ is used very easily these days but nobody could dispute that it’s an appropriate epithet for Dame Hilary Mantel. If you look at the scale of her achievements, the impact she’s had, the breadth of her knowledge and reading… She’s someone whom people went to for thoughts and opinions on a variety of different novels ad nonfiction works. People recognized her for the massive intellect as she was. It’s hard to imagine a world without her.”
Colin Callender, producer of “Wolf Hall” added: “Hilary was a brilliant iconoclast and captivating storyteller. With ‘Wolf Hall’ she reinvented the traditional historical novel.

With the recent passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the United Kingdom and much of the wider world have briefly hit pause to reflect on the life and legacy of the longest reigning Monarch in British history. Throughout her 70 years on the throne, the Queen not only saw her fair share of daily challenges as the figurehead of a nation but also witnessed the world change drastically around her.
When she first donned the crown at her 1953 Coronation, she was just 25 and thrust much earlier than expected into a life of service following the sudden death of her father, King George VI. At the time of her death, more than half a century had passed and the world was a much different place -- both culturally and aesthetically -- than the one that first welcomed her as Queen.
In between, there have been countless cinematic retellings of the Queen's unique life...

Peter Kosminsky imagined a world without Boris Johnson long before anyone else could.
The master dramaturge’s latest offering, Channel 4 and Peacock’s “The Undeclared War,” is set in 2024, in a dicey political landscape where Johnson has been usurped after losing a no-confidence vote, and the new prime minister (coolly played by Adrian Lester) has his share of national security issues with the Russians.
The U.K.-Russia cyberwarfare drama, which premiered in Britain last week, has received flak from some critics who bemoan the volatile nature of writing political dramas, especially when Johnson appeared to be clinging on to power, but on this side of the Pm’s July 7 resignation, “The Undeclared War” is a welcome take that glimpses life beyond Britain’s present political quagmire.
The concept originated from a 2017 dinner between Playground Entertainment boss Colin Callender and Kosminsky, who previously collaborated on the Emmy-winning “Wolf Hall...

Few British dynasties have inspired as much material in recent years as that of the Tudors. From Showtime’s aptly named “The Tudors,” to Hilary Mantel’s book/play/series “Wolf Hall,” to the current Broadway musical “Six,” the turbulent reign of Henry VIII and his six equally turbulent marriages have clearly had no shortage of retellings. At this point, those who want to tell a story about this family have to find a new way into its well-trod history.
Anya Reiss’ “Becoming Elizabeth,” premiering June 12 on Starz, aims to solve this problem by picking up at a more unusual point in Henry VIII’s history — more specifically in 1547, mere minutes after his death. In so doing, Reiss gives herself the gift of untangling the uniquely messy matters of succession, self-preservation, and the escalating tensions between Protestants and Catholics. What’s more, the series can give more consideration to Henry...

When she was 23, Sonia Friedman was—to use her expression—thrown into a rehearsal room with Harold Pinter at London’s National Theatre. She was his deputy stage manager during production for the premiere of his one-act play Mountain Language starring theatrical royalty Michael Gambon and Eileen Atkins.
“I was the person sitting right next to [Pinter],” she recalls. “He would whisper into my ear all the way through,” about how he wanted it to look, where’d there’d be a cue. She says the playwright would make almost no changes to his script. “Though he did at one point add a pause and asked me to write that into the script,” she says, smiling at the memory. It was a life-changing moment for her, working with playwrights who directed their own work. “I fell in love at that point, particularly with new work, watching actors mine something that no...
