House of Cards star to take role of wartime leader in Captain of the Gate, focusing on Churchill's rise to power in 1940
Kevin Spacey looks set to play Winston Churchill in a new biopic of the British wartime leader, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Captain of the Gate will centre on Churchill's rise to power in the second world war, when he led his country against Hitler's regime. The screenplay is by Ben Kaplan, who has written about Us president Ronald Reagan for a History Channel film and worked on documentaries about Vietnam and the second world war.
Spacey is reportedly attached to the project, which is seeking a director. The double Oscar winner is experiencing something of a career renaissance, with Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations for his role as a less well-respected politician: Francis Underwood in the Netflix drama House of Cards.

Kevin Spacey has played fictional politician Frank Underwood on Netflix series "House of Cards" for two seasons, but now he's set to portray a real world leader.
The Hollywood Reporter writes that Spacey will play former British prime minister Winston Churchill in a new biopic called "Captain of the Gate." The film will focus on Churchill's rise to power during World War II, and according to THR, chronicle his stand "against Parliament to defend Britain and the world from Adolf Hitler's Third Reich."
Churchill served as Britain's prime minister from 1940-1945, and again from 1951-1955. The influential world leader has frequently been the subject of movie and TV projects, including two HBO films: 2002's "The Gathering Storm," starring Albert Finney, and 2009's "Into the Storm," starring Brendan Gleeson.
"Captain of the Gate" was written by Ben Kaplan, whose previous credits include a Ronald Reagen film for the History Channel.

After spending two seasons portraying one of the most sinister politicians ever to offer asides to camera in the Us version of House Of Cards, Kevin Spacey is planning to stay in the political arena. This time, however, he'll be playing Winston Churchill who, while no less complicated, was A) real and B) slightly more familiar with the concept of morality. He's attached to star in Captain Of The Gate, written by Ben Kaplan, which looks to chronicle Churchill's rise to power and opposition to parliament as he encouraged Britain to stand up to Hitler and his plans for world domination.Exactly which period of Churchill's life will be covered remains to be seen, but it'll be interesting to see someone like Spacey tackle such a recognisable figure. As for who'll direct the film? That has yet to be revealed.Spacey is still on Netflix screens in House Of Cards...

Sierra/Affinity has announced they will be producing and financing the feature Captain of the Gate, a biopic centered on former British Prime Minister and all-around iconic figure Winston Churchill, and Spacey will don the signature Homburg hat for the role. He was also a story editor for When Melrose Place Ruled the World, which is almost certainly how he got this job. No director has been found yet, but Sierra...

Audiences and critics have given Kevin Spacey plenty of acclaim for his turn as politician Francis Underwood in the Netflix original series "House of Cards," but now the actor is preparing to play a real-life political figure on the big screen. THR has word that Spacey will play Sir Winston Churchill, the former two-time Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in the 40s and 50s in a low budget drama called Captain of the Gate. For anyone that listens to the podcast and/or pays attention to FilmDrunk.com, you are already familiar with my podcast co-host Laremy Legel and Vince Mancini who runs FilmDrunk. Well, those two along with Ben Kaplan and Matt Lieb attended this year's "Gathering of the Juggalos" after traveling in an Rv from California to Cave-In-Rock, Il and in the process they created a documentary to help us get an idea of exactly what takes place at the Faygo-drenched event. Today the first trailer for the film dropped and it looks great. Here's a description of the project: Whoop Dreams is a feature-length documentary about strangers in a strange world. Members of the Filmdrunk.com podcast (aka The Frotcast) raised funds to travel from California to Cave-In-Rock, Il to experience a music festival unlike any other.
