Ruth Bader Ginsburg's 35-page dissent in the Supreme Court's controversial Hobby Lobby ruling on Monday is already awesome enough, but singer-songwriter Jonathan Mann just made it even better: As part of his "Song a Day" project, he wrote an acoustic jam underlining the best points in Rbg's treatise. You'll never forget Ginsburg's words now that they're singable. As for Jonathan Mann: What a lovely voice! Reminds me of Jason Reeves, whose version of "Terrified" with Kara DioGuardi I've watched a thousand times.

It's not every day that a Supreme Court dissent goes viral, but Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's 35-page dissent in the decision Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. (or at least, the one-page summary of it) has blown up among those who disagree with the Court's ruling that closely held corporations are allowed a religious exemption from covering contraceptives in their employee health-care plans. "Approving some religious claims while deeming others unworthy of accommodation could be perceived as favoring one religion over another, the very risk the [Constitution's] Establishment Clause was designed to preclude," the 81-year-old associate justice writes,...

Jonathan Mann has been writing a song a day for nearly 2000 days, and few have been more topical or important as his latest. The singer-songwriter, who boasts a sizable YouTube following for his improbably prolific output, put to music the massive dissent issued by Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Monday in response to the controversial Hobby Lobby case. The close 5-4 ruling granted some companies the right to not cover contraceptives in health plans due to owners’ religious beliefs, which outraged women's rights advocates, liberals, opponents of corporate personhood, and many in Hollywood. New York City has already proven itself to be the place where video games and the live stage converges, and it's happening once again.
Jonathan Mann is the creator of the Mario Opera, who explains that the original production was put together in just three weeks at the age of 23, upon first arriving in Santa Cruz, California. Which is where its lone performance takes place.
Eight years laters it's having just one more showing in NYC:
The notion of a rock opera based on a video game is not exactly brand new, believe it or not. The Protomen for example, and their albums plus stage shows are based upon the original Nes Mega Man games.
The Brick's Game Play once had a live production of Super Mario Bros as well, though it was a far less literal translation of the source material than the Mario Opera. or so it would appear.

Fans of “The Nutcracker” may be interested in this bit of news; according to The Hollywood Reporter, a live-action film based on “The Nutcracker” will be in the works soon. According to the article, the film, titled “The Nutcracker,” will be about a 12-year-old girl, who, along with her brother and sister, receive Christmas presents from their eccentric clockmaker-inventor godfather. One of the toys, the Nutcracker, becomes part of an adventure the girl has as the Nutcracker battles the seven-headed Mouse King. The movie will have themes of beauty and ugliness. It's been a little while, more so a couple of years, since we've seen some form of "The Nutcracker" be redone for the big screen. Actually, it's one of the most beloved ballets ever created so it's no wonder that the famed story has been recycled on stage and in theaters time and time again. Perhaps it's the perfect time to do a nice spin on the story once more, because that's exactly what Universal Pictures is doing with Peter Chernin as the two team up to start production on a pitch that was made by John Mann, Jon Gunn and Chernin himself. The film will be produced by Chernin under Chernin Entertainment alongside Dylan Clark. It's also no wonder that Universal Pictures is so keen to get this version of "The Nutcracker" off the ground since he is producing "Oblivion" at the same time. The next project that's under...

Because I'm one of about 60 people in the entire United States who actually saw any part of last December's The Nutcracker 3D, I don't really feel like it's bragging to say I saw some advance scenes at the screening room belonging to Universal Pictures. It wasn't a Universal release-- the distributor was Freestyle Pictures-- but for whatever reason the presentation was held in Universal's theater. Lucky for them, I'm probably the only person who will ever associate Universal with that disastrous film, which grossed just $195,000 domestically, since Universal is moving forward with their own take on the classic Tchaikovsky ballet. According to Variety Peter Chernin, the former CEO of Fox who's now a producer of movies like Rise of the Planet of the Apes, has teamed up with Universal and fellow producer Dylan Clark to develop the pitch from Jon Gunn and John Mann. Those writers have no produced titles...

Universal plans to bring The Nutcracker to the big screen from a pitch by Jon Gunn and John Mann. They are teaming with producer Peter Chernin to adapt the short story as a feature film.
The Nutcracker is most famous as a ballet by Tchaikovsky in the late 19th century and still remains extremely popular today.
The original tale is a short story by E.T.A Hoffman in 1816 where a young girl's dolls come to life on Christmas Eve. A nutcracker saves the girl from an evil army of mice.
Now word on the actual plot for this particular film, but it will be interesting to see if they decide to do live-action or animation.

Universal Pictures has picked up John Mann and Jon Gunn's script pitch for a new live-action adaptation of "The Nutcracker" reports Heat Vision.
In this version the story centers on a 12-year-old girl who, with her brother and sister, receive gifts from their clockmaker-inventor godfather on Christmas Eve, one of which is a Nutcracker doll.
That night, the girl begins an adventure that includes a war involving a seven-headed Mouse King and his army of mice.
Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark ("Rise of the Planet of the Apes") will produce. This isn't to be confused with another 'Nutcracker' adaptation setup at New Line in 2009 with Darren Lemke.

Universal Pictures has acquired a pitch for upcoming movie "The Nutcracker". The studio has Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark ("Rise of the Planet of the Apes") to produce the new take on the classic tale.
The upcoming film will revolve around a 12-year old girl who receives a Nutcracker toy as her Christmas gift. Her adventure begins when the toy comes alive and a war erupts between him and Mouse King. Together, they now have to defeat the seven-headed king and his army of mice.
This big screen project will be made into a live-action adventure movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter. No cast and release date have been announced. John Mann and Jon Gunn reportedly have been booked to sit behind the lens.

To paraphrase the late, great Waylon Jennings, don't you think this board game bit done got out of hand? With Battleship, Monopoly, Oujia, Clue, Risk, and others on the way, and with studios grabbing on to toys like Hot Wheels, Max Steel, He-Man, and Stretch Armstrong, it's one more reason to hate Michael Bay. If not for Transformers, I doubt we'd be here.
And "here" is that place where we ask how in the world they're going to make a Magic 8-Ball movie. Paramount and Mattel have shaken hands on a "live-action adventure film," according to Deadline Hollywood, which Jon Gunn and John Mann will write. No offense to those dudes, but they don't have to work too hard to come up with porn star names.
It's one thing for games with fairly direct narratives to get this sort of treatment; the war games seem easy to contemplate, Monopoly less so.

According to reports, Paramount and toy manufacturer Mattel will team up on a "Magic 8 Ball" live-action adventure feature with a screenplay by Jon Gunn and John Mann.
Mattel's 'Magic 8-Ball' toy was invented in 1946 by Albert Carter, son of a clairvoyant, who marketed and sold the device with Abe Bookman of the Alabe Crafts Company.
The hollow, plastic sphere resembling an oversized billiard 8-ball, contains a cylindrical reservoir containing a white, plastic, 'icosahedral' die floating in alcohol with dissolved dark blue dye. The die is hollow, with openings in each face, allowing the die to fill with fluid, giving the plastic die minimal buoyancy. Each of the 20 faces of the die has an affirmative, negative, or non-committal statement printed on it in raised letters. There is a transparent window on the bottom of the 8-ball through which these messages can be read.
To use the ball, it must be held...

Paramount, having been blessed with blockbuster toy-to-film properties like "Transformers" and "G.I. Joe," both from Hasbro toys, has extended its pact with Mattel, and it's seeing a "Magic 8 Ball" movie in its future!
Really? I can imagine what Paramount will be doing -- they'll do a "Big" inspired film where a boy goes on an adventure based on the fortune given to him, in this case, by the Magic 8 Ball!
According to Deadline Hollywood Daily, "the deal is being put in place by Paramount Motion Picture Group president Adam Goodman, and will be produced by Brad Weston through his overall deal on the Par lot. Jon Gunn and John Mann will write the script. They wrote the DreamWorks Animation pic Alcatraz Vs. The Evil Librarians."
I don't know, I ain't buying this one. My future says, avoid this movie at all costs!

While sequels and remakes used to be the best measure of Hollywood’s creative poverty, Hollywood has now added pawing around in the toy box to its gasping list of desperate ideas. Mattel’s Magic 8-Ball, the childhood purveyor of prophecy and best testament to humanity’s undying idolatry, will reportedly find its way to a theatrical release.
Toymakers seem to be having some sort of Blockbuster firesale since Magic 8-Ball will join the ranks of the Transformers, Monopoly, Candy Land, Battleship, and Mattel’s He-Man as projects either already completed or in development. Some of proposed projects score a twofer for being remakes of toy movies (like the soon to be remade Clue) or toys that have already had their screen time, like the Ouija Board (though there’s still another on the way). I know that, for most people, Witchboard was not the cinematic treasure I think it is,...

Could the future-divining Magic 8-Ball of our childhood be heading to the big screen? According to one movie oracle (better known as Deadline New York), all signs point to yes.

In a city with potentially eight million writers just aching to tell their tale, you would think Hollywood would come up with something better than this. Something a bit more original and well, quite frankly, something a lot more inspiring. However, Paramount Pictures has optioned the rights to the Magic 8 Ball for a live action feature length film. A toy that you ask a question to and shake to discover the answer will be turned into a film that is longer than 80 minutes. A toy that you would ask if Tara in your 7th grade English class liked you and would ultimately crush your dreams and ambition when it said, “Outlook not so good,” will be turned into a feature length film.
