Welcome to Tony Talk, a weekly column in which Gold Derby contributing theater editors David Buchanan and Sam Eckmann discuss the Tony Awards race. In the hours after the announcement of the nominees for the 77th annual awards, we reflect on the omissions that stung the most, the long-shot picks we were most proud of predicting and discuss the early state of the Best Musical race.
Sam Eckmann: David, I have spent the morning pouring over the 2024 Tony nominations and switching between delight and disbelief when I look at the surprises and omissions in this lineup. It’s safe to say that this was by far the most packed and competitive season we have covered together, so while I didn’t get a perfect score with my predictions, I was more than happy with my performance. While there is much to cheer in these nominations, I can’t help but feel sad for many people.

The 2023-2024 Broadway season has been positively packed with an abundance of talent as dozens of new productions danced across New York City stages. The nominating committee for the Tony Awards usually does a great job in selecting the best of the best, thanks to a fair system that requires committee members to see all eligible productions. But given the sheer volume of shows this season, David Buchanan and I thought it best to remind these voters of contenders most in need of recognition.
David and I sat down to stump for 10 Tony Awards hopefuls who find themselves on uncertain ground heading into nominations (plus a few shoutouts to some stellar designers). Watch the full video slugfest above to hear our passionate pleas to the voters on the nominating committee. Hey Tony voter nominators, please don’t forget these incredible artists!

Welcome to Tony Talk, a weekly column in which Gold Derby contributing theater editors Sam Eckmann and David Buchanan discuss the Tony Awards race. With less than a week to go before nominations for the 77th Tonys are announced, we discuss the recently-opened and raved-about new play “Stereophonic” and consider how many of its performers might earn nominations in those challenging Featured Actor and Actress races.
David Buchanan: Hey Sam! We are officially less than a week away from the Tony nominations, and now that we have a tiny bit more clarity on the Best Musical race as shows like “Suffs” and “Hell’s Kitchen” have opened, I’m starting to really fret those pesky featured performer categories. A lot of shows this season are large ensemble pieces; last week, for example, saw the opening of the terrific play “Stereophonic,” which has an impeccable seven member ensemble. But I don...

Welcome to Tony Talk, a weekly column in which Gold Derby contributing theater editors David Buchanan and Sam Eckmann discuss the Tony Awards race. Following the opening of new musical “The Outsiders” on Broadway on April 11, we rack our brains about what other shows are likely to earn nominations in the top category of Best Musical, including frontrunners “Suffs,” “Illinoise” and others.
Sam Eckmann: Hi David! I can’t believe we are sitting roughly two weeks out from Tony nominations and we still have no idea what the Best Musical race is going to look like. That’s partly due to the insane crunch of new musicals opening at the end of the month: I’ll be squeaking in shows like “The Great Gatsby” and “Illinoise” right before the Tony Awards deadline, just like the nominators. But also partly because there is still no obvious frontrunner (be it a giant...

For the 20 years of predicting hundreds of awards shows, Gold Derby has not made a mistake in calculating scores for an event. However, for Tuesday’s Tony Awards nominations, Jordan Donica (“Camelot”) accidentally did not have his name checked as a nominee for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. That caused our score report to be inaccurate by one slot, so please accept our apologies for the mistake.
The top User remains the same with Josh_Moore having the best score of 78.57% (66 of 82 slots correct) when predicting the 2023 nominations. Another busy Broadway season has drawn to a close and Tony nominations are just days away. David Buchanan joins me in a rousing slugfest to sift through what musicals will be remembered at the 2023 Tony Awards. The sheer volume of quality productions and striking performances in contention makes for exciting races that are challenging to predict. Watch our full video slugfest above.
We begin by examining the potential nominees for Best Musical, which is possibly the only straightforward race in this discussion. David and I are certain that “Kimberly Akimbo,” “Some Like it Hot,” “& Juliet,” and “Shucked” should feel secure about their impending nominations. But that final spot is totally “up for grabs.”
I’m fairly certain that the “grandness” of “New York, New York,” with its lush design elements and swoon-worthy dancing, will help the show attain a spot in the lineup. Plus, the show should benefit from the...

Best Actress Oscar nominee Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie”) recently chatted with Gold Derby’s David Buchanan about what it was like working on the low-budget film about an alcoholic mother, Leslie “Lee” Rowlands, who wins the lottery and spends all of her prize money. She opens up about how “To Leslie” didn’t have “hundreds of millions of dollars” for a proper awards campaign, “and that’s as it should be.”
Amazingly, her team completed this film in just 19 days in Los Angeles. The shoot was so grueling that they would “sometimes do 10 scenes a day,” she reveals. “But in a way it was, it was a different fortune in and of itself, because I think it afforded us a kind of immediacy.” Riseborough received her first career Oscar nomination for this role, in part due to a successful grassroots campaign from her various friends and supporters. With the last two years of showbiz awards being very erratic, 2022 seemed to be the first year in a while where everything was back to normal, or at least the closest thing to it. In the midst of a still ongoing pandemic, we managed to get a full slate of entertainment awards ceremonies and, with that, an entire slate of amazing moments that would define the year. Below, 15 of our site’s editors and contributors explain which moments were the best for them.
Many of these moments came from specific wins. Matthew Stewart was incredibly moved by Troy Kotsur’s Best Supporting Actor win at the Oscars. Daniel Montgomery loved “Squid Game” getting rewarded at this year’s Emmys and bringing attention to international productions. David Buchanan was over the moon when the recent revival of “Company” won five Tony Awards only seven months after the passing of the show’s composer,...

But we thought that one number managed to tower above them all: newly minted Tony Award winner Joaquina Kalukango in “Paradise Square.” I had the thrilling privilege of sitting in the audience at Radio City Music Hall, and I admit that while watching her belt out “Let It Burn,” I was aware that I was watching an iconic Tony moment be created in real time. With the 2022 Tony Awards nomination announcement just days away, Broadway watchers are scrambling to finalize their predictions after a stellar season on the rialto. To help guide us through the ups and downs of the major Tony categories, I am joined by Michael Musto, Brian Lipton (Cititour) and my Gold Derby colleague David Buchanan for a heated debate. Which productions and performers will receive happy news on Monday, May 9 when nominations are announced? Watch our 2022 Tony Awards slugfest above with final nominations predictions.
With “The Lehman Trilogy” far out front in the Best Play race, I wonder aloud how many other plays from the dynamite first half of the season will make the cut this year. “I think this is one season, based on the buzz, where they are going to remember things that are close,” suggests Musto. Normally Tony voters prefer shows which are still open, and still generating income.

“It’s a pleasure that we have so many to choose from!” exclaims David Buchanan of the 13 new musicals and musical revivals competing for the 2022 Tony Awards. After the pandemic decimated Broadway and resulted in only a handful of eligible tuners at the last ceremony, it’s a joy to be able to discuss a genuinely competitive lineup of musicals from the 2021-2022 Broadway season. David and I sat down six weeks before nominations are announced – on May 3 – to dish which productions, actors, and creatives will make the cut. Watch the full video above.
David and I are both in agreement that “Six” and “A Strange Loop” are leaders of the pack when it comes to the Best Musical race. The former casts the six wives of Henry VIII as pop divas while the later is a transfer of an Off-Broadway smash about a black, gay writer trying to navigate the theater world.

Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s directorial debut, “tick, tick, Boom!” is now an Oscar nominee for Best Actor and Best Film Editing, while the multi-hyphenate himself is nominated in Best Original Song for penning a tune from “Encanto.” Miranda also saw his first stage musical, “In the Heights,” be adapted to a film last year and penned additional songs for the animated film “Vivo.”
Miranda recently spoke with Gold Derby contributing writer David Buchanan about adapting “tick, tick, Boom!” to the big screen, his personal connection to the late composer Stephen Sondheim and his work writing songs for “Encanto” and “Vivo.” If he wins the Oscar for songwriting, that will complete his Egot after previously winning at the Emmys, Grammys and Tonys. Next month's highlights include David Buchanan's surrealist Laguna Ave and Daniel Griffith's documentary, The Sleeper Must Awaken: Making Dune, a new film devoted to the making of David Lynch's 1984 film. Cult titles coming next month included the always popular Turkey Shoot from Brian Trenchard-Smith. Things get evocative with the thrillers Angel and Avenging Angel. Some of Japan's best and most unconvential titles - Tetsuo: The Iron Man, Burst City and Dead of Alive: Final - are coming next month. To say that 2021 has been a weird year is quite an understatement. Things started off really bleak then seemed to be getting better only to culminate in the uncertainty we now feel about everything. But we still got awards ceremonies and plenty of great moments from them. Due to pandemic precautions, all the ceremonies had to find ways to adapt so that they could still be events full of stars but also emphasizing the safety of those in attendance. Some of those presentations, like this year’s Grammy Awards, actually made this list which was selected by 15 of the site’s editors and contributors.

The morning after the 2021 Emmys were handed out on CBS, Gold Derby senior editors Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery were joined by contributors Denton Davidson and David Buchanan to talk all about the winners and losers. What were their favorite (and least favorite) moments of the ceremony? Which champions gave the best acceptance speeches? How did Cedric the Entertainer do as a first-time Emmy host? For all of that and more, watch our editors’ morning-after 2021 Emmys video slugfest above.
Dixon thought Evan Peters‘ victory for “Mare of Easttown” in Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actor was the best win of the night. “He’s been snubbed many times for roles he should have gotten in for,” Dixon noted about the “American Horror Story” star. “But it was not a slam dunk that he would win … This was a tough category and I’m so glad he won and his speech was great.

Following our long-running tradition, Gold Derby again will present our own Emmy Creative Arts webcasts live during the three official ceremonies this weekend. Remember, the Television Academy does not telecast or live-stream the full Creative Arts shows. They chop that video footage up into bits that get scattered across lots of media over subsequent days. So how are serious Emmy-watchers going to appreciate the Creative Arts Awards during the actual events and how are they even going to find out who the winners are? You have to pay careful attention to social media and whatever gets posted to Google News, all that.
But Gold Derby solved this problem years ago by producing our own live, cheeky, brilliant web show that breaks the news as winners are announced and involves our editors and top writers in fierce debates over what it all means and what do results portend for the main Emmy ceremony next weekend.

Micro-budget movies come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, but the undisputed champions of the form are almost always those which avoid splashy effects, embracing their shoestring aesthetic, and all the wild creative freedom that comes with it. The more gonzo the better, and it’s safe to say that David Buchanan’s Laguna Ave mostly gets it right, borrowing from the best of the best in weaving together a slowly unraveling LA neo-noir with the sort of splashy campiness of John Waters, crossed with echos of mad-eyed genre greats from Tetsuo to Troma.
Russell Steinberg’s washed-up one-handed drummer is the sort of witty stoner that seemed to make up a hefty majority of American movie leads in the 1990s; furiously trying to make rent without a stable job, with his relationship hanging by a thread and quiet oblivion not far out of reach. The date for the 2020 Tony Awards ceremony, remains shrouded in mystery. Voting is already underway however. What will these industry voters want to reward as Broadway theatres still remain shuttered during the pandemic? Watch David and I discuss which musical nominees might win top honors in the video above.

Nominations for the 2021 Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced on Thursday, February 4 with Netflix leading the charge, racking up a whopping 17 bids in the various TV categories. Gold Derby contributors Charles Bright, David Buchanan, Denton Davidson, Rob Licuria and Tony Ruiz waste no time hashing out their feelings about the most exciting nominations and egregious snubs on the day. “The Crown” led the field of Netflix nominees with “Ozark” right behind with four nominations. “Dead to Me” earned three bids on the comedy side while “Bridgerton” and “The Queen’s Gambit” reaped two nominations each.

Hours after the nominations for the 2020 Tony Awards were finally unveiled on October 15, I sat down with another Broadway buff, David Buchanan, to dish all the surprises and snubs. “My intention was to always embed the choreography into the staging, so that it didn’t feel like the story stopped for a dance number,” reveals “Hadestown” choreographer David Neumann. Coming from the downtown dance world, Neumann made his Broadway debut with “Hadestown.” His work on the Anais Mitchell musical has already won him a Chita Rivera Award and he has also been nominated for his first Tony Award. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Neumann has been a part of the “Hadestown” creative team since “back when it was sort of a Diy community theater thing” in Mitchell’s home state of Vermont. The songwriter invited him to continue with the project for the rest of its lifespan, from an Off-Broadway production at New York Theater Workshop, to Canada, London, and its current home on Broadway.

“I just sort of assumed some other celebrity was attached to the project,” admits Brandon Uranowitz of the initial table read for Lanford Wilson’s “Burn This.” His assumption was wrong. The next day he was offered the role of Larry and about a year later he’s doing the show eight times a week with a Tony nomination for his efforts. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“Burn This” is Uranowitz’s sixth appearance on Broadway, but shockingly marks his first appearance in a play. He didn’t intend on a such a musical heavy career. “I spent my entire college career doing plays,” he reveals, but he was “cast in the only musical I auditioned for in college.” An agent happened to be in the audience and wanted to work with him. So musical roles have followed the actor ever since.

He didn’t intend on a such a musical heavy career. “I spent my entire college career doing plays,” he reveals, but he was “cast in the only musical I auditioned for in college.” An agent happened to be in the audience and wanted to work with him. So musical roles have followed the actor ever since.

When the nominations for the 2019 Tony Awards were finally announced on Tuesday, major races were shaken up by shocking omissions. Gold Derby contributors David Buchanan and Sam Eckmann got together to dish all the snubs and surprises of the nominations and take a look at how this list of nominees changes the major races. Watch the full video slugfest above.
We start with the Best Play category, because that’s where “my jaw hit the floor.” Aaron Sorkin’s adaptation of “To Kill a Mockingbird” was seen as a potential winner of this top award, but despite nine nominations it missed the coveted Best Play category. David wonders if the earlier controversy surrounding Scott Rudin, because “they loved it everywhere else.”

Unlike recent Broadway seasons, this year’s Tony Award race for Best Musical is wide open. This is one of the few points on which David Buchanan and myself agree. As Tony season begins to heat up, David and I sat down to discuss potential nominations in the musical categories. Watch the full video above.
We think that there are currently three musicals with the potential to win the top award: “Be More Chill,” “Hadestown,” and “Tootsie.” We both list “Hadestown” as the current frontrunner due to its original score, fresh concept, and respected creative team. If these three shows are locked for a nomination, that will leave one open slot up for grabs in the Best Musical category.
David is backing “Ain’t Too Proud” with his fourth slot, the crowd pleasing story of The Temptations. But as Tony voters have strayed from jukebox musicals in favor of original score,...

Discuss the season with Broadway insiders in our notorious forums
Sam and David agree that “The Ferryman” will most likely win Best Play, choosing “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “Hillary and Clinton” for their second and third slots. They disagree, though, on what play will round out the category, with Sam currently picking “Gary” and David backing “Network.” While their lists for Best Play are almost identical, they have significantly different predictions for Best Revival. Both have “All My Sons” and “Burn This” making the cut, but David chooses “The Waverly Gallery” and “King Lear” while...
