When the evil wizard Akaris abducts Princess Meyra, the muscular and determined ‘Tyrol the Slave’ leads a diverse band of heroes on a perilous quest. They must navigate through an underground labyrinth, brimming with treacherous traps and monstrous foes, to rescue the princess and thwart Akaris’s dark plans.
As a throwback to a genre seemingly forgotten, The Slave and the Sorcerer is billed as “Deathstalker meets The Evil Dead”, a redux of the sword and sorcery films that came before it. Films that, at times, never took themselves too seriously. Is this doctor a healer? Or an instigator of nightmares? "I just want to help," he says in the new trailer for The Black Gloves. Judging by the evidence in every other moment in the trailer itself, starting with the very first image of a doll with a shadow creature creeping up in the background, that may not be possible. Written by Sarah Daly and directed by Lawrie Brewster, the film features an ensemble cast, including Jamie Scott Gordon (Bonejangles 2), Macarena Gómez, and Alexandra Hulme (Girls). Ahead of the World premiere of the darkly erotic Automata at Arrow Video FrightFest Glasgow 2019, director Lawrie Brewster tells us about his record-breaking Kickstarter campaign, the growth of Hex Studios and his fascination with creepy dolls.
Automata has earned its place in Kickstarter history as the UK’s most funded narrative film ever. Why do you think that happened?
The reason this happened is because there is a disconnect between a swathe of the audience, in our case a genre audience, and commercial distributors. Because commercial distributors and broadcasters for that matter, are so adept and so accustomed to selling a type of predictable product, that a form of repetition occurs whereby films that might not fit the mould, are simply not sold, and hence not usually produced. With Automata, and with all of our films at Hex Studios, we utilise that underserved niche, to produce unique genre films, which...

The Owlman has become something of an internet cult figure over the last couple of years, with his epic reign of terror on unsuspecting Scottish explorers going seriously viral. The character of the Owlman originally appeared in the indie horror film Lord of Tears back in 2013, directed by Lawrie Brewster. The film itself was well received by fans and critics alike, but the Owlman’s popularity has grown way beyond his indie roots into the realm of internet folklore. Like his earlier counterpart and some would say distant cousin, Slenderman, the Owlman has captured the imagination of the horror community, spawning new stories, fan theories, costumes and even tattoos!
Now, you can possess your very own Owlman in the form of a Limited Edition action figure being sold through Kickstarter. Limited to just 150 exclusive signed figures, the release will help fund the completion of the team’s next film The Unkindness of Ravens.

Lord of Tears is an independent horror film directed by Lawrie Brewster that will be hitting the festival circuit later this year. Their goal was to create a movie that had more of a classic feel, similar to The Wicker Man and The Haunting, and we thought readers might be interested in learning more. If you’d like an early look at the movie, we have a brand new trailer:

There, he meets Evie Turner, a beautiful young American woman who helps him to unravel the mysteries of the house and the forgotten years he spent there as a child.

Having a short story discovered on a website has led screenwriter Sarah Daly to leave her office job and see her films come to life through the acting talents of stars Joseph Gordon Levitt (500 Days of Summer) and Channing Tatum (Step Up, Dear John). Sarah spoke to Iftn about the immense collaborative online effort which has resulted in the production of two short films she has penned and her debut feature project, 'Harboured'. Sarah uploaded a short story onto Joseph Gordon Levitt's online production site, hitrcord.org last year and, as she explains, "Interest in the community was quite good so Joseph Gordon Levitt did a reading of the piece and asked others to submit their visuals. The contributions flooded – art, music etc – which in turn spurred Joe to shoot a live action version with himself and Lexy Hulme."...
