Exclusive: Who is Sam Cox, and why is his house covered in doodles?
Acme Studios and Lightbox set out to answer these questions in the upcoming documentary feature The Trouble with Mr Doodle.
The documentary tells the story of Cox, a 25-year-old British artist known as Mr Doodle, who bought a six-bedroom mansion in the English countryside of Kent in 2019. After stripping it bare and painting it brilliant white, he spent more than two years covering every single inch of it in doodles.
In October 2022, Mr Doodle became the subject of global media attention when he unveiled his Doodle House to the world. The video Sam created to document his work in a three-minute-long stop-frame time lapse received over 70 million views in the first few days.
The world marvelled at what kind of mind could produce such an extraordinary work of living art and wondered how he did it. Now...

Prince Harry might no longer be a member of the royal family, but he certainly knows what it’s like to interact with Palace staff members. Harry was in the royal spotlight for much of his life and spent years as a working royal after his schooling and military service.
The prince likely had his share of awkward run-ins, but he managed to have a perfectly chill response when a staffer accidentally called him by a nickname that was not allowed in the royal family.

With the recent passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the United Kingdom and much of the wider world have briefly hit pause to reflect on the life and legacy of the longest reigning Monarch in British history. Throughout her 70 years on the throne, the Queen not only saw her fair share of daily challenges as the figurehead of a nation but also witnessed the world change drastically around her.
When she first donned the crown at her 1953 Coronation, she was just 25 and thrust much earlier than expected into a life of service following the sudden death of her father, King George VI. At the time of her death, more than half a century had passed and the world was a much different place -- both culturally and aesthetically -- than the one that first welcomed her as Queen.
In between, there have been countless cinematic retellings of the Queen's unique life...

Despite how private the British royal family keeps their personal lives, they've remained the subject of tabloid scrutiny and public interest for centuries. Queen Elizabeth II, the late Prince Philip, and more family members are certainly fascinating, but it's Princess Diana who truly captured the hearts of people all over the world during - and after - her marriage to Prince Charles. Interest never waned following her tragic death in a 1997 car accident - the 25th anniversary is Aug. 31 - and the royal's life has remained in the spotlight. The beloved humanitarian has subsequently been the subject of many scripted films and shows, as well as documentaries.
And yet another Princess Diana documentary was released this month from HBO, titled "The Princess." "The Princess" - from Oscar-nominated director Ed Perkins - opts against using talking head interviews to tell Princess Diana's story, rather relying on old news footage and archival video.

What can you do when your homeland’s falling apart? The easy answer is stay or leave, but both options carry too much complexity to simply choose and be done. For starters, not everyone has that choice—whether due to finances, family, or myriad other reasons. And those who are able must dig deep within themselves to rationalize why. Do you leave because of greater opportunity? Do you stay because you want to be part of the solution? Or do you find yourself in a sort of purgatory—one foot planted on each side, only to discover your fear of losing out on the benefits of one for the potential of the other has you locked in stasis?...

The creators of The Princess, an HBO documentary about Princess Diana that premiered on Saturday, are defending their use of a controversial interview clip that Prince William previously said “holds no legitimacy.”

Last year, Prince William denounced the interview after the BBC found that the journalist had deceived the “people...

This month marks the 25th anniversary of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. I vividly remember it, because I had literally just stepped in the door after attending the funeral of a close friend and turned on the TV as the news was breaking of the crash of her car in a tunnel in Paris, precipitated by the paparazzi chasing her in pursuit of juicy pix to sell to trashy tabloids.
Desperate for some distraction from my own personal, decidedly nonroyal grief, I remained glued to CNN for days, through the announcement of her death and the widespread gnashing of teeth and rending of garments that ensued in the UK. The public reaction of the Brits to her death, mobs of people wailing and sobbing outside Buckingham Palace, absolutely incensed me. I had just buried someone who, to this moment a quarter of a century later, is the person...

Only a week after the head of the BBC pledged never to broadcast again its discredited Panorama interview with Diana, Princess of Wales, it emerges that extracts from the 1995 program will be included in a documentary to be shown on Sky and Now TV next month.
The Princess, a documentary directed by Ed Perkins re-telling the late Princess’s life through archive footage, will include footage of the interview, despite her son Prince William also expressing his wishes that this never be aired again. Perkins’ film has already had a brief run in UK cinemas.
The BBC returned the BAFTA award it won for the Panorama interview – in which Diana revealed her distress in her marriage, her eating disorders and her prophecy she would never be queen – after interviewer Martin Bashir’s deceptive practices in obtaining Diana’s agreement to be interviewed were uncovered.

"A hollow and tormented marriage are giving the British media, and its public, little else to talk about." HBO has unveiled a new US trailer for immersive documentary The Princess, from filmmaker Ed Perkins. This premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and already opened in UK cinemas last month (view the UK trailer). Princess Diana's story is told exclusively through archive footage to create a narrative about her life and her death. It also illuminates how the public's attitude to the monarchy is still fanatical and unwavering. Intensely emotional, The Princess is a visceral submersion into Diana's life in the constant and often intrusive glare of the media spotlight. The doc film unfolds as if it were in the present, allowing viewers to experience the overwhelming adoration, but also intense scrutiny of Diana’s every move. "It makes you feel like you're part of the problem...

Almost 25 years after her death, Princess Diana's life story is being revisited once again. Directed by Ed Perkins, "The Princess," which premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, uses old interviews and news footage to recount pivotal moments in Diana's public life, including her highly publicized divorce from Prince Charles and fatal 1997 car accident in Paris.
The documentary is structured without any explanations or talking heads, letting viewers see Diana's life play out on screen just like the world did at the time. In using this "immersive approach," Perkins aims to reframe Diana's story and "offer something new to the conversation we are still having about Diana all these years later."
"Diana herself was a complex and paradoxical figure."
"I wanted to aim at something more immersive and unmediated, constructed solely from contemporaneous archive from the time - the very imagery that people 'knew' Diana through.

We know what happens but, even so, Ed Perkins’s skilfully edited documentary on the dazzling outsider royal is utterly and unerringly compelling
She has grown not old as those who are left grew old: the “royal watchers”, the journalists, the charity workers, the prime ministers, the paparazzi, the ex-husband and the two sons, both now older than she was when she died. Maybe Ed Perkins’s documentary about Diana, Princess of Wales’s operatically exciting public life shouldn’t really be as fascinating as it is, but I spent much of it on the edge of my seat. It tells the story using only existing archive footage and some video material, perhaps inspired by film-maker Asif Kapadia who has often taken this approach, notably with racing driver Ayrton Senna, who was killed in an F1 crash in 1994.
The sting of this technique is that we now know everything, or almost everything,...

The team behind a new film, The Princess, explain why the royal family possess all the vital ingredients to make them the perfect cinematic subjects
Only a genius of longform plotting could have planned the sting in the tail of the royal 2022. In the rolling melodrama of the British monarchy, the platinum jubilee was always slated for this year, gratitude splashed across the Daily Express. But now the mood will darken. So it is that 70 years of the Queen segues directly into 25 since the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. In Macbeth, the ghost haunted the feast. Here she returns with the pink gin hangovers barely faded. On with the show.
A film will mark the occasion: The Princess, a much buzzed-about new documentary. It also follows a celebration of the Queen, the fond bio-doc Elizabeth: A Portrait in Parts. That was the last movie directed by the late, highly regarded Roger Michell.

"It's the media that's causing the problems." Altitude Films in the UK has revealed an official UK trailer for a documentary experience called The Princess, the latest from award-winning doc filmmaker Ed Perkins. This first premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and it's opening in June in the UK, though there's still no US date set yet. This doc works as a counter-point to the Spencer film from last year. Princess Diana's story is told exclusively through archive footage to create an immersive narrative about her life and death. It also illuminates how the public's attitude to the monarchy is still fanatical and unwavering. I saw this during Sundance and really dug it - "It doesn't exactly say anything new that we don't already know, but it's a genuine experience to get lost in this film. It makes you feel like you're part of the problem...

The People’s Princess is back in the public eye.
Late Princess Diana is at the center of the archival footage documentary “The Princess,” which captures the fandom and media obsession with the royal family in the 1990s. Sans talking heads or narration, “The Princess” relies solely on “turning the camera back on ourselves,” the public who adored — and later mourned — Diana Spencer.
Academy Award-nominated director Ed Perkins helms the documentary, with Oscar-winning “Searching for Sugar Man” producer Simon Chinn serving as producer. The feature documentary debuted at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, making its way to the London arm of the film festival on June 11 before a nationwide theatrical release starting June 30.
“The Princess” charts the public moments of Diana and Prince Charles’ love story and subsequent divorce through news reports, personal videos, and paparazzi footage. Editors Jinx Godfrey and Daniel Lapira couple the videos with nameless voiceovers from fans framing the doc.

The late Lady Diana’s reign on the big screen continues this summer with The Princess, an upcoming documentary that tells the story of Diana Spencer’s time in the Royal Family through archival footage from the media that both adored and scrutinized her.
The trailer shows how “the People’s Princess” was constantly in the public eye, while also offering a glimpse at the evolution of that coverage: At first the media filmed Diana from a respectful distance, but eventually the boundaries were erased as the public thirsted for more tabloid fodder.

The first trailer from upcoming Princess Diana feature documentary “The Princess” has landed and gives audiences a glimpse into the media maelstrom that surrounded the tragic royal.
Directed by Ed Perkins (“Tell Me Who I Am”), the film is produced (in association with HBO and Sky) by Lightbox, the producers behind the Oscar-winning documentary “Searching for Sugar Man.”
According to the logline, “‘The Princess’ tells the story of Princess Diana exclusively through contemporaneous archival footage creating a bold and immersive narrative of her life and death. Since the launch of Guardian Documentaries in 2016, the short film division of the British daily newspaper has garnered an Oscar and a BAFTA over the past two consecutive years, scoring the best British short film trophy for Cherish Oteka’s “The Black Cop” on March 13.
About Gamal “G” Turawa, a Black gay man who joined the London police department to help change its racial make-up, “The Black Cop” explores Turawa’s memories of homophobia, racial profiling, and harassment. Commissioned by Guardian Documentaries, the doc received additional funds from the BFI Doc Society Fund.
“Guardian Documentaries compliment Guardian journalism,” says Lindsay Poulton, head of Guardian Documentaries. “I felt that Cherish’s initial proposal expressed urgent themes in a creative way. We were reflecting on the Black Lives Matter movement; on the push for LGBTQ+ equality; we knew there were a lot of important, uncomfortable conversations to be had about policing and abuse of power.

The life of Princess Diana has been explored heavily in TV and film over the past few years and that is to be understood as we approach the 25th anniversary of her death. When it was announced that there would be a Sundance documentary about the tragic figure one might have assumed they would witness another cliche depiction about the doomed Princess, but director Ed Perkins has discovered a unique format of telling the story of her life in a way so impactful and crushing.
The Princess made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival and may be the breakout hit of the fest. Told chronologically entirely through archival footage, Perkins tells the story of Princess Diana’s life from her first interview until her funeral.

The inner life of Diana Spencer has been imagined effectively in several recent speculative dramas, from TV’s The Crown to Pablo Larraín’s Spencer. Sundance documentary The Princess invites us into her world by tracing the intense interest that followed her engagement to Prince Charles in 1981 — and it’s riveting stuff.
British director Ed Perkins has crafted a story using a mixture of professional and amateur footage, eschewing a traditional narration for a cacophony of unidentified voices discussing Diana. Some are reporters ostensibly stating facts with a noticeable bias. Others are pundits judging and critiquing her openly. And of course, there are the fans who heap praise on her, the queen of their hearts and the princess of the people.

It’s a chronicle of Princess Diana culled entirely from television news footage and other public records. In other words, this isn’t an intimate portrait of the Princess of Wales that ”takes us closer to the subject” through an archival jamboree of home movies, eyebrow-raising long-view commentary, and investigative coups. The Diana we see in “The Princess” is the one we’ve always seen, the one we’ve been watching for 40 years, 25 of them since her death in 1997. Since we’ve never stopped watching her, “The Princess,” coming on the heels of “Spencer,” Season 4 of “The Crown,” and the short-lived musical “Diana,” may sound like one Diana document too many. Yet after all those dramatic treatments, it’s galvanizing to see the real story laid out exactly as it happened — or, more precisely, as it happened and as it was presented to the public, those being, quite often, two very different things.

Based on a screenplay by Nick Saltrese, the film will follow a group of old college friends who reunite on a Caribbean scuba diving trip exploring the wreckage of a WWII battleship and find themselves trapped inside the underwater labyrinth of rusted metal surrounded by great white sharks.
The film will be directed by Liam O’Donnell, who began his career working with Hydraulx VFX on projects including Fox’s “Alien vs. Predator: Requiem” (2007), Marvel’s “Iron Man 2” (2009) and Relativity/Universal’s “Skyline” (2010), which he produced and co-wrote. In 2017, O’Donnell wrote his directorial debut, “Beyond Skyline,” starring Frank Grillo, Bojana Novakovic and Iko Uwais. Recently, O’Donnell wrote and directed the trilogy capper “Skylines,” starring Lindsey Morgan, Rhona Mitra and Alexander Siddig.

Founded by Oscar-winning “Man on Wire” producer Simon Chinn and Emmy winner Jonathan Chinn, high-end documentary producer Lightbox is navigating the next phase of its evolution, and exiting one of the key initiatives that helped the transatlantic company set up shop.
Variety can reveal that the London- and Los Angeles-based outfit is buying back its shares and leaving U.K. broadcaster Channel 4’s Indie Growth Fund (Igf), which invests in British production companies by taking minority stakes to help them grow. Lightbox is now fully independent, and plans to remain so “for the short term” before considering a sale in the future.
Since accepting the Channel 4 investment in 2014, the “Whitney” producer has more than tripled in size, growing from a £4-million to £13-million turnover company, and establishing itself as a bona fide U.S.-U.K. player specializing in high-end documentaries for streaming services and premium cablers.

Are non-fiction films easier to finance and produce in 2020?
Some of the buzziest projects in production in the UK right now are non-fiction: Altitude’s untitled Princess Diana documentary, directed by Ed Perkins and produced by Lightbox, the team behind Man On Wire; Embankment’s untitled Queen Elizabeth documentary directed by Roger Michell; and a new Alex Ferguson documentary produced by DNA’s Andrew Macdonald and Ventureland’s John Battsek, which will aim for a theatrical release in 2021.
More and more companies are embracing non-fiction work during the pandemic.
