The joke is on me for thinking Tin & Tina would be another trashy, puke-worthy Netflix rom-com, thanks to its title. Sure, that particular genre has its audience, but in the case of Tin & Tina, I’m very happy to have been proven wrong after going through two anxiety-inducing, nightmarish hours—exactly the kind of thing I would expect from a good horror movie. Director Rubin Stein’s expansion of his 2013 short of the same name is a fascinating watch that keeps you on the edge of your seat for most of its runtime, with the anticipation of something waiting just around the corner. Funnily enough, the main premise of Tin & Tina, i.e., a childless couple adopting two orphan kids, can very well be the bedrock of a wholesome family drama, but making a psychological horror out of it has to be way more fun, I would say.

The eerie orphan twins in Rubin Stein’s Tin & Tina are ardent believers of miracles. And while that may not have been a premeditated metaphor for the film, Stein’s psychological thriller with unsettling echoes of horror is nothing short of a miracle in itself. Raining on the parched terrains of a genre that hasn’t seen ingenuity or a true sense of effort in quite a while, Tin & Tina‘s recycled trope paints masterpieces in each organic frame. For an admirer of body horror such as yours truly to not miss it for a second and to allow the wave of the spine-chilling atmospheric dread to take over–’Tin & Tina’ has to be one of the finest manifestations of a cryptic strain of fear. Madrid-based Latido Films is partnering with the organizers of the new genre-focused Fantastic Pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival’s Marché du Film on a new award that will offer international distribution to selected Spanish-language Iberoamerican films.

Prolific Andalusian production company La Claqueta has tapped award-winning screenwriter-producer Alberto Marini to direct rural thriller “Últimos días de caza” (“Last Days of Hunting.”)
Penned by José Cabeza, co-scribe on 2016’s “7 Years,” Netflix first Spanish original movie, “Last Days of Hunting” has a completed screenplay and has initiated financing.
The aim is to close the financing phase during this year and begin shooting second quarter 2024, probably in northern Spain.
“Last Days of Hunting” leads a growth-period for Seville-based La Claqueta, which is raising the ante in terms of film production ambitions.

The South of Spain is getting its own dedicate post-production studio, Antípodas Film Lab, the first of its kind in the region. Based out of Seville, the state-of-the-art facilities are co-founded by a group of post-production experts made up of José M. G. Moyano, Juan Ventura Pecellín, José Manuel Rocha, Manuel Terceño, Amparo Martínez and Darío García García.
Although the studio is based in Spain and the bulk of their work is likely to be done on Spanish productions, their ambitions certainly seem to reach far beyond the Iberian Peninsula. In fact, Antípodas website is published in English, inviting companies from around the world to make use of the facilities and the staff working there and emphasizing connectivity, including an internal 100gbe/40gbe network and a dedicated fiber line.

Daniela Arguello, a Guatemalan-born director, is yet to screen her upcoming short film, “Sra. Genovese,” but already HBO has acquired the adventure comedy for its streaming service.
Through exposure at the annual InFocus: Latinx and Hispanic Cinema event, Arguello’s work is being noticed. Her previous short, “2500km,” made on a $500 budget, was acquired by HBO after screening at the event in 2017.
Arguello and a few other Latinx filmmakers return this year to the annual screening event co-hosted by NewFilmmakers Los Angeles and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The Sept. 8 event is intended to showcase the work of up-and-coming filmmakers, offering opportunities to gain a foothold in the American film industry. Many of the directors come from counties like Mexico, Brazil, Peru, and Spain, among others.

The Cannes Festival’s Frontières Platform is heading into its second year, following a successful inauguration in 2017.
Organized by the Fantasia Intl. Film Festival, in partnership with the Cannes Film Market, the Frontières Platform is an international co-production market and networking platform for genre projects, aimed to foster relationships in co-production and financing between Europe and North America.
This year will see 16 projects participate in the event which runs May 12-13. Among the activities to be hosted are a Proof of Concept Presentation for projects in advanced financing stages, and a Buyers Showcase for films that are already in post-production or which have recently been completed.
This year’s participants represent a wide range of countries and cultures from across Europe and North America, and for the first time a South American project in Chile’s “The Monster Within.”
