Sir Ian McKellen’s portrayal of X-Men villain Magneto is simply too iconic. Rousing speech before a battle might be Magneto’s way of doing things. Sir McKellen, however, is more like another X-Men character than his own. The advice he gave to X-Men co-star Hugh Jackman is proof enough of how unlike Magento he is.

Bruce Banner, aka the Hulk, is one of Marvel’s pivotal superheroes who plays a significant part in various narratives of the comic books. Apart from being an integral part of the Avengers ensemble, the character is also front and center in the World War Hulk: X-Men miniseries, a 3-part crossover narrative that was a popular inclusion in Marvel comics.
The Hulk is one of Marvel’s pivotal superheroes
While the plot lines include various intense runs-ins between Hulk and the X-Men, one particular storyline involving a massive duel between the mutants and the Avenger proved to be extremely violent even by the raging superhero’s standards. This narrative continues to be one of the most aggressive stories written in the comic books.

Big Brother 23 featured Derek Xiao and Claire Rehfuss.
The BB23 cast members were on the wrong side of The Cookout alliance that summer, leading to their early exits from the game.
But Derek and Claire made it to the jury phase. A romantic relationship developed between them in the jury house.
The secret of the relationship between Derek and Claire was kept close by their fellow jury members, and it only became public after the season finale.
As a reminder, The Cookout dominated that season, taking all six of its alliance members to the end.
The BB23 jury voted unanimously for Xavier Prather to win over Derek Frazier. It made Xavier the first winner of the $750,000 prize. The prize had been at $500,000 for the previous 22 seasons.

Many of us were excited about the prospect of The New Mutants a few years ago. The sales pitch of an “X-Men horror movie” sounded like a match made in heaven. As often happens, the film that was released was far more of a pillow fight than the cage match I’d hoped for.
But as we excitedly embrace the kid in us with the release of X-Men ’97 on Disney+, I couldn’t help but imagine a more adult side of that universe. What if the X-Men franchise embraced the opportunity to lean into the horror genre? I’m talking about the body horror of its mutants, the cruelness of its villains, and the potential for superhumanly violent finishers that would make Mortal Kombat blush. With all that in mind, I took a look through the original X-Men films on a horror scavenger hunt and found some pretty cool trinkets along the way.

In recent years, after multiple setbacks stemming from makers taking audiences for granted, Marvel Studios has doubled down on the nostalgia pandering in major ways, be it through crossovers, cameos, or revamping beloved classics. The studio’s recent attempt to celebrate the integration of mutants as mainstay characters of the MCU through X-Men’97, a continuation of fan favorite X-Men: The Animated Series, is another such attempt, but one that exudes novelty, heart, and enough care to make the transition between the original and sequel series appear seamless.
As the premiere team of the Marvel universe, the X-Men and Mutants saga arguably command the most important section of the franchise’s storytelling potential, as time and again, the representation of the marginalized, repressed section of humankind has been reflected through their stories in vivid ways. Sir Ian McKellen is renowned the world over for his expertise in the acting field that has won him numerous recognitions and awards. The Oscar nominee though, is best known in the commercial cinematic space for playing two cult characters namely Gandalf from Lord of the Rings, and Magneto from X-Men.

McKellen who portrayed these two iconic roles masterfully, became hugely popular with audiences and critics worldwide. But the veteran was apprehensive that the towering physicality of Erik Lehnsherr aka Magneto as depicted in the X-Men comics was completely different to his appearance. He then requested a wardrobe change to ensure that he fit the bill.

With a rich history as well as a complex personality, Scott Summers, aka Cyclops, the X-Men’s leader, has long been an enduring favorite. However, in the live-action adaptations of the X-Men franchise, particularly in the Fox flicks, Cyclops has been frequently reduced to a supporting role, overshadowed by other characters (particularly Wolverine).
Well, X-Men ‘97 is finally here, with two episodes released just a few hours ago. Fans of the legendary mutant team can finally celebrate, as the series appears to have redeemed Cyclops’ arc and restored the character’s true power and complexity. Of course, it is high time Cyclops received the justice he so richly deserves, after years of underwhelming portrayals.
X-Men ‘97 premiers on Disney+ on March 20th, 2024.
Created by writer Stan Lee, the founding member of the X-Men was previously portrayed by James Marsden in the Fox X-Men films.

This X-Men ’97 article contains spoilers.
Cue that iconic theme tune because X-Men ‘97 has us squeezing back into our colorful spandex once again. It’s been nearly 27 years since “Graduation Day” saw X-Men: The Animated Series bow out in style, and while Fox’s X-Men movies and the Marvel Cinematic Universe have changed how we see Charles Xavier’s Gifted Youngsters, it feels good to be home with this nostalgic cartoon caper.
Picking up events several months after the season finale seemingly closed the book on X-Men: The Animated Series, the class of ‘97 is still living in the shadow of Professor X’s “death” in the two-part series premiere. Morph and Bishop are on the team and in the credits, while Magneto has had an apparent change of heart, choosing to honor Charles Xavier’s final wish that he take over leadership of the mutant team.

X-Men ’97 has come out swinging from the gate, wowing fans and critics alike with its first two episodes. The episodes pick up a year after the assassination of Charles Xavier, leaving Scott Summers to lead the X-Men. However, he is soon replaced by Magneto, who becomes the heir to everything Charles Xavier owned, as dictated by his last will and testament.
A still from X-Men ’97
However, Charles Xavier has been killed off multiple times, but his death rarely seems to stick, given how important he is to the X-Men and to the overall brand. While the character might be dead in the sequel series, there are a myriad of ways he could return, as is the case in comics more often than not.

If you are a millennial of a certain age, there’s a good chance Disney+’s X-Men ’97 will evoke nostalgic chills almost without trying: The theme song alone, borrowed from the original X-Men: The Animated Series, will be enough to transport some of us, Ratatouille-style, into memories of Saturday mornings bingeing cartoons over sugar cereal.
But as demonstrated by one failed remake or middling reboot after another, getting people to remember they used to like a show is one thing. It is, then, a testament to the precision of X-Men ’97‘s balancing act that it actually pulls it off. “X-Men: The Animated Series” may have an enduring impact as meme fodder, but to many millennials, the Fox show was a gateway into one of Marvel’s most venerable franchises. Before the live-action blockbusters of the early aughts, and certainly before the rise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “The Animated Series” offered a primer on mutants as a powerful allegory for marginalized groups, plus iconic characters like the saber-clawed Wolverine and telepathic Jean Grey.

Superheroes never really die, and that's especially true of the X-Men. Across multiple comics, films, and cartoons, Marvel's merry band of mutants have been resurrected time and time again in various forms and protocols. Yet, for fans of a certain age, the only adaptation that really matters is X-Men: The Animated Series, a beloved cartoon that took on mammoth storylines such as the Dark Phoenix saga and Days Of Future Past with impressive comic book accuracy. In fact, an entire generation was raised on nothing more than those original five seasons and a bowl of cereal every Saturday morning from 1992 to 1997 (not counting reruns). But now, three decades on, the series that started it all — and that theme tune, of course — is rising like a phoenix of its own with a new sequel show from none other than Marvel Studios.

Although some thought she’d be playing a variant version of Deadpool to give a twist on Lady Deadpool, others were adamant she’d bring Cassandra Nova to the party. Now, it looks like the latter has been confirmed.
As seen on the US Copyright Office site, Corrin’s character is listed as “Cassandra Nova,” seemingly confirming they’ll be playing the villainous twin sister of Charles Xavier. Introduced in 2001’s New X-Men #114, Cassandra Nova has similar telekinetic and telepathic powers to Charles Xavier. But instead of using them for good, she tried to eradicate the so-called “mutant menace” by dispatching an army of Sentinel robots to the mutant island of Genosha, massacring millions of mutants in the process.

The trailer for "X-Men '97," the revival of the cartoon series beloved by '90s kids everywhere, recently premiered. That means it's that time again — that time when nerds like me try to get you superhero movie/TV fans to read some dang comics.
"X-Men" itself was enthusiastic about adapting comic stories, particularly ones written by Chris Claremont during his legendary 17-year-long run on "X-Men". Season 1 of "X-Men" closed out with the two-part time-travel comic "Days of Future Past" and then, in season 3, the show adapted both the original "Phoenix Saga" and "The Dark Phoenix Saga."
Larry Houston, the original producer/director of "X-Men," is a big fan of the comics and made the show with attention to the details of the source material. Houston is back as a consulting producer on "X-Men '97" and head writer Beau DeMayo recruited "X-Men" fans as his team, feeling that enthusiasm about the...

Amid all the controversy about how James Gunn seemingly sacrificed The CW’s Superman & Lois series just because Superman: Legacy will soon be hitting the market, Gunn is trying his best to win fans’ hearts back. In order to do this and keep their anticipation, he is taking to his social media handles to share updates about the upcoming film every now and then.
James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy (PC: DC)
One of these recent updates saw the co-ceo of DC Studios sharing a selfie from the sets of the 2025 scheduled film. This picture included the confirmed cast and crew of Superman: Legacy along with James Gunn and Peter Safran themselves. But this picture has also ostensibly leaked a huge spoiler about the movie, or to be more precise, about Lex Luthor’s look.

It's official. The Marvel Cinematic Universe will welcome Deadpool into the field with this summer's "Deadpool & Wolverine." Opening July 26, 2024, the sequel will bring the unabashedly R-rated character into a larger franchise that is usually PG-13, recent official incorporation of the TV-ma Netflix shows notwithstanding.
Deadpool as a big-screen character originates with Fox's somewhat convoluted "X-Men" franchise, but it's also apart from them in significant ways. All two "Deadpool" movies include references to different stories and characters within the franchise. Even aside from that, the X-Men movie timeline is by no means clear, with different casts in different timelines of the past, present, and future. You could watch all 13 of them in order, hoping for clarity, but you may have trouble finding it. However, if all you're concerned about is what you need to know about Deadpool from his movie appearances, and maybe a little bit of Wolverine, this is the article for you.

Snikt! Cue up that incredibly nostalgic synth theme tune, and break out the yellow spandex – the X-Men are back in animated form for long-awaited cartoon sequel series X-Men ’97. This one is a direct follow-up to the beloved X-Men: The Animated Series that ran between 1992 and 1997, but it comes from the minds at Marvel Studios, continuing Kevin Feige’s slow and steady journey to bring the mutants into the MCU fold. The first trailer has now arrived, promising a colourful blast of superhero action – and some narrative weight, with our favourite characters reeling from the death of Professor X in the original series’ finale. Check it out here:
Grab a massive bowl of sugary breakfast cereal, because this looks like a big old blast of Saturday morning cartoon fun – and Marvel is really embracing that nostalgia, with the live-action intro for the trailer recalling the days of square TVs, (now-)vintage action figures,...

For an entire generation, the adventures of the X-Men first hooked them on the small screen. From 1992 to 1997, X-Men: The Animated Series brought the adventures of Professor X and his band of mutants to life, dialling into major storylines like the Dark Phoenix saga and Days Of Future Past along the way. Now, decades since the cartoon wrapped, it’s getting an official follow-up from none other than Marvel Studios – turning back the clock for sequel series X-Men ’97, boasting an art style that tips its hat towards the classic ‘90s look.
But while X-Men ’97 will bring back a host of beloved characters, it’s taking the mutants into uncertain times too. After all, the original show wrapped with an episode that saw a dying Xavier head off to the Shi’ar homeworld, leaving his powered-up family behind. “This season is very much about what happens when the X-Men...

On paper, Willow in the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" pilot was fairly one-note. She was a straightforward nerdy, downtrodden character with a predictable arc of growing more confident through her friendship with Buffy. When actor Alyson Hannigan read through her lines for the first time, she actually found the character somewhat off-putting. "I was reading the lines, and it was just sort of depressing," she explained in an official 2017 Watcher's Guide for the show. "[Willow] was saying, 'Oh, boys don't like me, and this and that, and I can't really speak around guys.' I just didn't want to feel sorry for her. How are [viewers] going to like her if they're saying, 'Oh, look at her feeling sorry for herself?'"
It's a reasonable critique; as the Dawn haters of later "Buffy" seasons can attest, there's nothing more annoying than a seemingly whiny, self-pitying character, even if she technically doesn't do anything evil.

It is difficult to overstate just how important the first "X-Men" movie was. Back in 2000, Marvel was coming off of its first and only box office hit in the form of "Blade." It was early days for blockbuster films based on Marvel Comics properties. Audiences weren't as feverish about making sure that Hollywood got it right, and filmmakers weren't as beholden to the source material as they are today. To that end, one of Magneto's signature powers was first solidified in this movie. And, most surprising of all, it only came about as a simple solution to a significant plot issue.
Screenwriter David Hayter recently took to Twitter to address a fan's comment, with the fan in question marveling that Magneto's helmet being used to block telepathy was not a thing that concretely existed before 2000's "X-Men." Hayter, in reply, explained why this power was brought into the film,...

When it comes to comics, superheroes are inexplicably linked to monsters. Horror comics existed before the superhero boom launched with Action Comics #1 (1938), and continued going strong after the caped crowd flopped following World War II. When Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and Stan Lee launched the Marvel Universe in the early 60s, they did so tentatively, keeping Spider-Man, Hulk, and the Fantastic Four close to the sci-fi and monster comics they made throughout the fifties.
As unlikely as the pairing may seem, superheroes and monsters make for a peanut butter and chocolate combination. Not only do monsters provide the overpowered villains required for superhero fights, as the current Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong demonstrates, but they also give characters like Spider-Man and Batman a chance to show off their heroism in the darkest of times.
So if you’re looking for some spooky superhero stories for your Halloween season, these 13 comics will do the trick.

The comedy show The Afterparty returns to Apple TV this week with a new murder and a majorly new cast. The TV comedy is a whodunit with some interesting genre-bending episodes where each character tells the story the way they see it personally. One of the best parts of the first season has to be an animated version of Zoë’s version of the tale, where she navigates through her four internal personalities and comes to the conclusion that she can be all of them at once. It was definitely one of the more serious episodes of the show too (not lacking in comedy in any way though). The first season began with the death of famous pop superstar Xavier (read X-avier), who was murdered in his own home at an afterparty following their school reunion. The prime suspect was Aniq (Sam Richardson), our resident lover boy, who happened to...

With the presumptive demise of physical media, there’s nothing I’m going to miss quite so much as DVD commentary tracks. It’s less the banal puffery and hagiographic nostalgia of 95 percent of them and more the occasional recording on which somebody would unload with two hours of candor, whether it’s Ben Affleck talking Armageddon or the delicate dance performed by Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter Lem Hobbs discussing The Limey.
That Limey commentary track is a spectacular illustration of how great movies can still be made even if two key creative forces aren’t on the same page regarding much of anything. It’s also a reminder of how often the things that Soderbergh does behind the camera aren’t always aligned with whatever might have been the initial goals of whoever wrote the screenplay — and nor need they be, necessarily.

A low-key, poetic exploration of life’s ironies, Monica Sorelle’s feature debut Mountains frames the disappearance of Miami’s Little Haiti with a warm, compassionate gaze recalling the masters of social realism––akin to Roberto Rossellini with the touch of Ousmane Sembène’s lighter films. With a title drawn from a Haitian proverb “behind mountains there are mountains,” the film retains a light touch, somewhat more sad than mad as Little Haiti disappears in the city’s building boom. A modest dream home is unobtainable once the real estate vultures circle the neighborhood and Xavier Sr. (Atibon Nazaire), a demolition worker, plays a role in changing his neighborhood permanently, making way for young Whole Foods-shopping professionals to displace families and small businesses.
Xavier Sr. lives in a small bungalow with crossing guard / homemaker wife Esperance (Sheila Anoizer) and their floundering 20-something son Junior (Chris Renois), an aspiring stand-up comedian.

For years, Hollywood has tried relentlessly to bring to life the exciting and diverse team dynamic of one of Marvel’s most iconic and best-selling comic book franchises- The X-Men. With 11 live action films and billions of studio dollars given to them over the years, you’d think we’d have covered the best stories from the pages and brought them into cinema. And while I think there are plenty of good moments hidden in these movies, and some movies in the franchise that are beyond expectations, I also think that the true potential of the X-Men and their complicated, interpersonal nuance has yet to be fully realized on the big screen.
That’s not to say that I don’t enjoy movies like the original X-Men, and First Class, and of course Logan, which is easily the most bleak and disturbing film that Fox has ever made with Jackman as Wolverine.

A pair of actors who hail from Cannes Film Festival award-winning projects — Anamaria Marinca (Cristian Mungiu’s 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) and Jean-Marc Barr (Lars Von Trier’s Europa) — are teaming to star in a new film that marks an official collaboration between France and Ireland.
