This post contains spoilers for "Goosebumps" episodes 9 and 10.
Readers beware, you're in for a scare ... just kidding. It's an interview. But! It is related to the new Hulu and Disney+ adaptation of "Goosebumps," based on the beloved young-adult horror series of the same name from R.L. Stine. In just 10 episodes, the new "Goosebumps" series is a triumph of horror, comedy, and some well-placed nostalgia -- a series that speaks to both the generation that grew up begging parents to buy them the books from the Scholastic Book Fair and raced home to watch new episodes of the TV show after school (It's me. Hi!), as well as new viewers getting into the "Goosebumps" universe for the first time. When I reviewed the new show, I had only been given the first eight episodes, which felt like its own contained season. But with two more episodes unseen, it was a sign...

Like so many of the broader Goosebumps series’ nightmarish affairs, the back half of the new Goosebumps show belongs to Slappy.
It all seemed to begin in the early 1990s when young Harold Biddle was caught in a fiery inferno. As he burned, a group of teenagers ran off into the night with one of his most prized possessions. Eventually, those teenagers grew up and had children of their own.
There’s Zack Morris’ Isaiah, the charismatic football star and his best friend James played by Miles McKenna, a fun and sarcastic rich kid dealing with the pitfalls of being one of the small town’s only openly queer residents. Ana Yi Puig plays the tough, strong and socially isolated Isabella, Will Price is Lucas, who’s as lovably affable as he is occasionally idiotic, and Isa Briones is the staggeringly charming Margot, Isaiah’s neighbor, lifelong friend and on-again,...

The Direct has an exclusive new clip from the Goosebumps finale that introduces Kanduu and Franz Maher, two important figures from the past.
Things have been a little wild in Port Lawrence ever since Justin Long’s Nathan Bratt took over the old Biddle House. Though, despite a litany of haunted objects terrorizing some of its citizens, including the infamous Slappy, all the horror seemed to be in the rearview mirror.
Isaiah, Margot, James, Isabelle, and Lucas were all already in the process of moving on from the recent terrible happenings. But, thanks to Mr. Bratt’s extensive writer's block, their struggles aren’t over yet.

“Goosebumps” has not suffered from a lack of adaptations in the decades since R.L. Stine’s YA series of novels first terrorized millennials. In addition to the anthology series that ran for four seasons in the mid-’90s, a 2015 film adaptation starring Jack Black and directed by Rob Letterman also earned a standalone sequel in 2018. Now, Slappy the Dummy, haunted cameras, evil Halloween masks and sinister cuckoo clocks are all back with the Disney+ and Hulu “Goosebumps” series, which takes on a decidedly darker tone.
Created by Letterman and Nicholas Stoller (“Neighbors”), the serialized approach encompasses multiple Stine novels as a group of high schoolers are terrorized by the vengeful ghost of a teen who died in 1993 — accidentally, at the hands of their parents. The resulting show manages to marry genuine scares with the horrors of high school and that scratchy, itchy feeling that comes with the dawning realization that...

Having taken the world by storm with "Saw" in 2004, Australian director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell were suddenly the hottest new act in horror. Unfortunately, three years later, the duo would suffer the dreaded "sophomore slump" with "Dead Silence," an original puppet horror film that was lambasted by critics and bombed at the box office, barely matching its $20 million budget. It's a shame, honestly. I won't deny that "Dead Silence" has its problems (which we will get into), but it's also an enthrallingly gothic tale of mystery and the macabre (one bursting with creative ideas and inventively ghastly visuals). Not to mention it functions as a useful primer for the rest of Wan and Whannell's horror oeuvre.
"Dead Silence" starts out pretty nasty and only gets meaner the further along it goes. Upon being anonymously gifted with a ventriloquist doll named Billy (think Slappy from "Goosebumps" only somehow even...

The brand new “Goosebumps” television series from Disney+ and Hulu premiered on Friday, October 13, with the first five episodes now available for streaming.
Iconic elements from R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps books are woven throughout the series, and the first five episodes tease that the evil dummy known as Slappy is coming soon.
Slappy, introduced in the 1993 book Night of the Living Dummy, has become the true “horror icon” of the Goosebumps world, often appearing in adaptations of Stine’s classic terror tales. Slappy was a central figure in the recent live action movies, and it’s clear he’s also a major player in the brand new “Goosebumps” live action series from Disney+ and Hulu.
What role does Slappy play in the new series? You’ll have to continue tuning in to find out. New episodes of “Goosebumps” premiere on a weekly basis on both Disney+ and Hulu.

Acclaimed Goosebumps author R.L. Stine just celebrated his 80th birthday on October 8, and says he’s having the busiest fall of his life.
As far as publishing goes, Stine has six books coming out including a comic book for adults, a picture book, a new addition to the Goosebumps series, and even a book of writing tips for adults. Zombie Town, a movie based on Stine’s novel of the same name, started streaming on Hulu starring Dan Aykroyd and Chevy Chase. Then there’s the Disney+ adaptation of Stine...

The producers of the new Disney+ Goosebumps series teased Slappy’s big role in the story.
There are a lot of iconic elements from the Goosebumps franchise, but nothing can quite match the sinister ventriloquist dummy that is Slappy.
The evil doll made his first appearance in Night of the Living Dummy, the seventh Goosebumps book, which was published in May 1993. Over the years, he would go on to star in dozens of R.L. Stine’s books, even getting his own spinoff series titled Slappyworld.

From the moment The Haunted Mask hit TV screens one chilly October afternoon in 1995, Goosebumps fans the world over knew that a movie was only a matter of time.
Those were the days of Goosebumps bedding sets, green and purple wrist watches bathed in cobwebs and time spent begging parents for the $8.95 (plus $2 shipping and handling) so that one might join the hallowed, card-carrying ranks of the Official Goosebumps Fan Club. Bookmobiles everywhere overflowed with copies of Night of the Living Dummy II and The Barking Ghost and the silver screen was ripe for the kind of wicked playfulness and fiendish glee that only R.L. Stine could deliver.
But adolescent aficionados of the spooky and the strange never saw their dream of a 90s big screen Goosebumps adventure realized. Monster kids grew into horror loving adults before Slappy and his gang of sinister monstrosities escaped the pages of R.L.

R.L. Stine’s iconic ’90s horror books for kids are getting a tune-up in the 10-episode Goosebumps on Disney+ and Hulu, which follows a group of five teens as they uncover maddening mysteries in their small Pacific Northwest town. In the first hour, based in part on Stine’s 1992 novel Say Cheese and Die!, football star Isaiah (EastEnders’ Zack Morris) unearths a haunted Polaroid camera during a Halloween party, and “bad things start happening,” warns executive producer Conor Welch. “The final photo is of him hurt at the end of a game, so he spends the episode trying to make sure that doesn’t happen.” Disney/David Astorga That’s only the scary start of a series featuring plot points from The Haunted Mask, Go Eat Worms! and The Cuckoo Clock of Doom—and an appearance by Slappy, the franchise’s fan-favorite living dummy. At the center of all the...
