Sophia Bush’s “Good Sam” and Pete Holmes’ “How We Roll” have been canceled after just one season each at CBS, Variety has learned.
“Good Sam” was a medical drama that follows Dr. Sam Griffith (Bush), a gifted heart surgeon who excels in her new leadership role as chief of surgery after her renowned boss falls into a coma. When her former boss wakes up months later demanding to resume his duties, Sam is tasked with supervising this egotistical expert with a scalpel who never acknowledged her stellar talent. Complicating matters, the caustic and arrogant Dr. Rob “Griff” Griffith (Jason Isaacs) also happens to be her father. As Griff defies Sam’s authority and challenges her medical expertise, the big question becomes whether this father and daughter will ever be able to mend their own relationship as expertly as they heal the hearts of their patients.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Good Sam Season 1 finale “To Whom It May Concern.”] It’s once again Dr. Sam Griffith (Sophia Bush) vs. her father, Dr. Rob “Griff” Griffith (Jason Isaacs) in the CBS medical drama’s Season 1 finale, which sees the permanent cardiothoracic chief named, but there’s a twist. Good Sam‘s “To Whom It May Concern” also sees some competition for the position of CMO (chief medical officer), with the board considering both Vivian Katz (Wendy Crewson) and her (temporary?) replacement Rhonda Glass (Yanna McIntosh) for the position. Plus, Sam may have to say goodbye to one of her team (and her ex), Caleb Tucker (Michael Stahl-David). So where did the finale leave everyone as we wait to hear about a possible second season? Read on to find out. Who’s Chief? While Sam’s getting positive press with the Griffith Technique, she and Griff vehemently disagree about who exactly should...

When the penultimate episode of Good Sam Season 1 ended, Dr. Sam Griffith (Sophia Bush) and her father, Dr. Rob “Griff” Griffith (Jason Isaac), were at odds over a surgical technique, one she adapted from his original plan. And now, in the finale, after she promoted it at the end of “The Griffith Technique,” the world — and especially Malcolm A. Kingsley (Edwin Hodge) — is celebrating her. In TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek of “To Whom It May Concern,” Sam walks into the hospital to find poster-size versions of the articles covering her and the technique. “This is very impressive,” she says as she joins Malcolm. There are, as he tells her, 34 articles out there on her technique — and that doesn’t even include that day’s newspapers. Danielle Blancher/CBS To Sam, “it feels a little excessive.” But Malcolm sees the benefits of all this coverage. “The attention is good for the hospital,...

Dr. Sam Griffith (Sophia Bush) faces a challenge in the March 30 episode of Good Sam as a devastating storm hits and the hospital staff must improvise in TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek. “Governor just declared a state of emergency,” Dr. Caleb Tucker (Michael Stahl-David) reports. “They’re closing the roads.” So how will the on-call doctors get to the hospital? He suggests sending the ambulances, but as Dr. Rob “Griff” Griffith (Jason Isaacs) points out, they’re “going to be a little busy right now.” The doctors realize the only people who will be coming in are more patients. Ramona Diaconescu/CBS And there’s another problem: With so many trauma cases, they will run short on blood. “Can we call the Red Cross?” Sam suggests, but her father points out they, too, will be facing shortages. Dr. Joey Costa (Davi Santos) sums their situation up best: “So we’re almost at capacity,...

Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton and Bethany Joy Lenz may be best known respectively as Brooke Davis, Peyton Sawyer and Haley James Scott — but now, they’re on screen together once again in completely different roles. In their first TV collaboration since 2009, the former “One Tree Hill” costars appear on Wednesday’s episode of CBS’ “Good Sam.”
In the medical drama, led by Bush as Dr. Sam Griffith, Amy Taylor (Lenz) is admitted to the hospital with signs of premature heart disease, with her sister, Gretchen (Burton), at her side. Sam is Amy’s doctor.
“If you get lucky, there’s a couple of people on every job who you love. I feel really lucky to really love everyone on this show,” Bush tells Variety of her “Good Sam” costars. “We have a really special connection, and it was really special for my oldest and dearest family to come and meet my new family.

CBS has finally dropped the official trailer for Good Sam, its latest medical drama.
The show finds Dr. Sam Griffith (Sophia Bush) taking on the role of Chief of Surgery when her father, Dr. Rob Griffith (Jason Isaacs), falls into a coma.
The drama picks up when Rob wakes up months later intending to resume his career where he left off.
“Sam is tasked with supervising this egotistical expert with a scalpel who never acknowledged her stellar talent,” reads the official logline for the project.
Sam's father "defies Sam’s authority and challenges her medical expertise, the big question becomes whether this father and daughter will ever be able to mend their own relationship as expertly as they heal the hearts of their patients.”
It is a compelling hook, but the success will all come down to whether the show manages to portray the fraught relationship between the father and daughter well.
