One of the most anticipated and hottest films of 2024 is finally here. We are talking about Zendaya‘s Challengers which was memed to death for a threesome scene that was shown in the trailer but if you have seen the film then you know that the brilliance of the film is much more than that one scene. Directed by Call Me By Your Name‘s Luca Guadagnino from a screenplay by Justin Kuritzkes, the sports romantic drama follows the story of a talented tennis player Tashi, and her twisted relationship with two tennis players, one of whom is her husband now. Challengers stars Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor in the lead role with Jordan Thompson, Faith Fay, Hailey Gates, and Tierre Diaz starring in supporting roles. So, if you loved the story of ambition and toxic relationships in Challengers you should check out these films with similar themes next.

It has been another strange and uncertain year for Hollywood, with the pandemic hitting cinemas hard and streaming services rising to hold the fort. It has also been a year in which we’ve seen a growing diversity in front of, and behind the camera, with an increasing focus on new voices and new stories being told.
Last year saw Bong Joon-ho ‘s Parasite achieve Oscar greatness and, for a brief pre-covid moment, it seemed that the world of cinema was beginning to embrace a wider world. The 2021 BAFTAs showed signs this was continuing with Minari, Another Round and Promising Young Woman taking home a clutch of awards each.
This year’s American Academy Awards will be a strange affair, certainly one to remember.
Here is the full list of nominations with Winners in bold.

Good news: There are 41 feature films nominated for Oscars this year. Better news: The 93rd Academy Awards are Sunday, so there’s still time to watch some of the movies before the biggest night in Hollywood.
“Mank” leads all films with 10 nominations, with “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” in a six-way tie for second with six nominations a piece. It’s the most diverse slate of nominees ever, with two women in the directing category for the first time ever (“Nomadland” director Chloe Zhao and “Promising Young Woman” filmmaker Emerald Fennell), and nine of the 20 acting nominations went to people of color.
It’s also an extraordinarily streaming-heavy field; Netflix snagged an astonishing 35 nominations, its highest mark ever and the most for an individual studio in more than a decade.

“Mank” is the only film in contention at the 2021 Oscars to break the double digit barrier in the nominations count. This Netflix period picture reaped a leading 10 bids. In a six-way tied for second place with, appropriately enough, six nominations apiece are “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” All seven of these films are up for Best Picture. That race is rounded out by five-time contender “Promising Young Woman.”

Many critics roll their eyes at Oscar season, and when it runs all the way through April — an anomaly this time — who can blame them? With the same crop of movies dissected ad infinitum for eight months and counting, the conversations about the “state of the race” often eclipse ones about cinematic quality. Thankfully, many of this year’s top contenders for the gold also happen to be critical favorites. If the 30 critics who voted in this year’s edition of our annual Oscar critics poll had their way, many of the expected outcomes on Sunday’s show would remain the same.
However, the results for Best Picture also cast doubt on the very idea of anointing a single winner as the very best movie of 2020. The top vote-getters in that category resulted in a tie, with official frontrunner “Nomadland” splitting the prize with “Minari.” Both movies are quiet, lyrical...

Aaron Sorkin had a massive job ahead of him when researching the screenplay for his second directorial effort, “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” Back in 2007 when the project was to be directed by Steven Spielberg, Sorkin begin plowing through tens of thousands of pages of the official trial transcript to first get the facts down, then applied his character-writing skill to shape his script into a crowd-pleasing movie, the result of which has garnered Sorkin an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
Sorkin’s screenplay for “Chicago 7” will battle with it out with scripts for Emerald Fennell‘s genre-bending “Promising Young Woman,” Lee Isaac Chung‘s family remembrance “Minari,” Will Berson and Shaka King‘s historical biopic “Judas and the Black Messiah” and the drama “Sound of Metal” written by Darius Marder and his brother Abraham Marder.

Brothers Darius Marder and Abraham Marder have earned their first Academy Award nominations for their script to “Sound of Metal,” which explores the journey of a heavy-metal drummer who loses his hearing and must learn to begin a new life as a deaf person. The idea actually stemmed from an unfinished documentary on the subject by Darius’ friend, filmmaker Derek Cianfrance, who has also earned a nomination for his co-story credit on the Best Original Screenplay nominee.
The trio will now be competing with Aaron Sorkin‘s historical drama “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Emerald Fennell‘s genre-bending “Promising Young Woman,” Lee Isaac Chung‘s family memory piece “Minari” as well as “Judas and the Black Messiah,” written by Will Berson and Shaka King.

To American audiences, Emerald Fennell is primarily known as an actress in Netflix’s “The Crown,” but with “Promising Young Woman,” her first feature as writer/director, she is rapidly becoming a major force behind the camera as well. An almost indescribable blend of comedic thriller and fierce revenge drama with a distinctly female point-of-view, “Promising Young Woman” has brought Fennell her first Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
Fennell’s script will be competing with screenplays for Aaron Sorkin‘s historical drama “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Lee Isaac Chung‘s family remembrance “Minari,” Will Berson and Shaka King‘s historical biopic “Judas and the Black Messiah” and the drama “Sound of Metal” written by Darius Marder and his brother Abraham Marder.

Lee Isaac Chung, with three films under his belt, wanted to write one more screenplay before taking a teaching job in Korea. He decided to create a story inspired by his own family who moved to Arkansas when he was just a boy, hoping to give his young daughter some idea of her family’s history. Not only was that mission accomplished, but the resulting script, “Minari,” has earned Chung his first Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
Chung’s “Minari” screenplay will now vie for the Oscar with Aaron Sorkin‘s historical drama “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Emerald Fennell‘s genre-bending “Promising Young Woman,” Will Berson and Shaka King‘s historical biopic “Judas and the Black Messiah” and the drama “Sound of Metal” written by Darius Marder and his brother Abraham Marder.

Director Shaka King and television writer Will Berson had never previously met, but they decided to blend together their individual scripts chronicling the life of Black Panther Party Chairman Fred Hampton and turn them into a political thriller. On Sunday night, the Writers Guild Awards handed out its screenwriting prizes in a virtual setting, signaling a historic moment for women at the Oscars, specifically the screenplay awards.
Emerald Fennell won best original screenplay for her revenge drama “Promising Young Woman” over Oscar-nominated films “Judas and the Black Messiah”, “Sound of Metal” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (Aaron Sorkin). Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari” was not eligible for nomination at the annual guild ceremony. If Fennell manages to win the Oscar for original screenplay, she’ll be the first solo female screenwriter winner of the category since Diablo Cody for “Juno” in 2007.

Another guild award is in the books, ladies and gentlemen. The Writers Guild Awards are in the rearview mirror now, with some definite Oscar implications. For one thing, it does really now seem like Emerald Fennell is headed towards an Academy Award for her Promising Young Woman screenplay. On the flip-side, Kemp Powers’ hopes to upset Chloe Zhao’s Nomadland in Best Adapted Screenplay took a hit when One Night in Miami… lost at WGA to Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and “Promising Young Woman” took top narrative film honors on Sunday at the 73rd annual Writers Guild of America Awards.

“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and “Promising Young Woman” were named the best adapted original screenplays of 2021 at the Writers Guild Awards, which took place in a virtual ceremony on Sunday.
While “Promising Young Woman” went into the show with a slight edge over “The Trial of the Chicago 7’ for the original-screenplay award,”Borat” was a decided dark horse in the adapted-screenplay category, whose nominees also included “One Night in Miami,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “News of the World’ and “The White Tiger.”

Before the Indie Spirits, before the Oscars, there are the guilds, and as Hollywood inches its way through a protracted awards season, it’s up to each voting body to dole out their own accolades. On Sunday night, it was time for the writers to shine, as the Writers Guild of America presented their awards for film, television, news, and more, all voted on by fellow writers. For writers, by writers!
As IndieWire’s own Anne Thompson has noted, the WGA’s film nominees are less predictive than an indication of what’s losing and gaining heat, from the missing early 2020 releases “I’m Thinking of Ending Things,” “The King of Staten Island,” and “Da 5 Bloods,” to such surging movies as “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Sound of Metal,” and “Promising Young Woman,” all of which recently earned Best Picture nods from the Academy.

The Writers Guild of America Awards were handed during a virtual ceremony on Sunday, March 21. But don’t base your Oscar predictions on these kudos. Every year a slew of Oscar-nominated scripts are deemed ineligible for consideration here due to guild guidelines. Indeed, over the past 12 years only 80 of the Writers Guild of America Awards nominees have numbered among the 120 screenplays that reaped Academy Awards bids. Scroll down for the 2021 Writers Guild of America Awards winners list.
Our odds predict that “Nomadland” will win Best Adapted Screenplay winner at the Oscars but it was not allowed to compete at the WGA Awards. Neither was another Oscar contender in that category: “The Father.” The guild did match the academy three-for-five in this category, with “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “One Night in Miami” and “The White Tiger” competing at both. “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “News of the World” round out the guild nominees.

Netflix’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” is in the lead to win Best Original Screenplay at Sunday’s Writers Guild of America Awards, according to Gold Derby odds. The script, which tells the true-life story of anti–Vietnam War protesters in 1968, comes from director Aaron Sorkin, an Oscar and WGA Award winner for scripting “The Social Network” (2010). The time has come to find out the nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards. While the 2021 Oscars ceremony was originally set for February 28, the Academy decided to delay the event to late April to accommodate the pandemic upending much of the theatrical release calendar in 2020. Because of the pandemic, the eligibility window for the 2021 Oscars was extended from January 1, 2020 to February 28, 2021, two months longer than normal. The Oscars are also allowing films that debuted on streaming or PVOD platforms to compete for Oscars, so long as they originally planned for a theatrical release.
Last year’s Oscars were a historic event as Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” made history in a number of top categories, including becoming the first non-English-language movie to win Best Picture. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled its nominations Monday morning for the 93rd Oscars, through Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas. AMPAS’s David Rubin started the pandemic-delayed Oscars by validating Deadline’s scoop that most of the event will be held in Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, with some of the event being held in the Dolby Theatre, its usual locale.
The nominations for the Oscars, which will hold its ceremony April 25 live on ABC, had its share of surprises, and the most noticeable thing is the diversity that is reflected in the Academy’s efforts over several years to broaden the perspective of its voting members. Coming off the recent scandalous showing by the scandal-mocked HFPA for not even having a single voting Black member, it seems a step in the right direction.

Shaka King disagreed “a bit” with Aaron Sorkin tonight about how much artistic license filmmakers should take when dealing with historic characters and events. His remarks came during the WGA West’s Beyond Words virtual panel discussion, which featured this year’s WGA Awards nominees for best original and adapted screenplays. Their exploration of truth vs. accuracy was fascinating and altogether respectful and friendly.
Sorkin’s film, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and King’s Judas and The Black Messiah share a common character: Black Panther leader Fred Hampton, who was gunned down by police in 1969 during a pre-dawn raid at his apartment in Chicago. Hampton is the central figure in King’s film, and plays a small but important role – as Bobby Seale’s courtroom advisor – in Sorkin’s.
“For me, The Chicago Seven is a painting; it’s not a photograph,” Sorkin said. “It’s not a piece of journalism.

The 2021 Critics’ Choice Awards were handed out on Sunday (March 7), during a three-hour virtual ceremony at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California that aired on the CW Network. Scroll down to see the 2021 Critics Choice Awards winners list for the 20 film and 19 television categories below.
“Mank” reaped a leading 12 bids, followed closely by “Minari” at 10. “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” scored eight nominations while “News of the World” has a lucky seven. And five films — “Da 5 Bloods,” “Nomadland,” “One Night in Miami,” “Promising Young Woman” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” — each earned six bids. All of these titles make up our predicted Top 10 nominees for Best Picture at the Oscars. We have “The Father,” which was nominated in four other categories here, ahead of five-time nominee “Sound of Metal” at the Academy Awards.
On the TV front, two Netflix dramas, “Ozark” and “The Crown,” lead with six nominations apiece.

Amazon Studios is bringing three of its 2021 Oscar contenders to the Criterion Collection: Darius Marder’s “Sound of Metal,” Regina King’s “One Night in Miami,” and Garrett Bradley’s “Time.” The latter two will arrive on Criterion later this year, while “Sound of Metal” will bow in 2022. The addition of these three titles to the prestigious classic and contemporary film collection marks the first time Amazon Original movies are joining Criterion since the Criterion release of “Cold War.” All three movies are now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
While it may strike some cinephiles odd that titles available for streaming are heading to Criterion, this is not an unprecedented move on Criterion’s part. Not only is “Cold War” in the collection, but Criterion has teamed with Netflix in the past to release titles such as Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma,” Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story,” and Martin Scorsese...

Since the academy expanded the Best Picture category at the Oscars in 2010, Best Original Screenplay has gone to writers of a wide-range of genres: dramas; comedies (“Midnight in Paris”); biopics; true-life stories (“Spotlight”); period pictures (“Django Unchained”); war movies (“The Hurt Locker”); sci-fi (“Her”), thrillers (“Parasite”) and horror (“Get Out”). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscars predictions for Best Original Screenplay and be sure to check out our predictions for Best Adapted Screenplay.)
Regardless of the type of film, a nominee needs broad academy support to win this race. Indeed, all 11 of these most recent Best Original Screenplay winners were, at the least, Best Picture nominees. And six of them won the big prize, bringing the total number of Best Picture champs with Oscar-winning original screenplays to 18. By comparison, 41 films have done this on the adapted side.

“Sound of Metal” first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2019 and gradually built positive buzz leading up to its theatrical release last November. The film tells the story of a heavy metal drummer named Ruben, played by Riz Ahmed, who is horrified to discover he has lost his hearing. With help from his girlfriend, Lou (Olivia Cooke), and mentor Joe (Paul Raci), he seeks the treatment he needs while battling his inner demons. Scroll down to view our in-depth video interviews with top Oscar contenders from the film.
Ahmed has collected nominations at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards for his performance, following multiple wins from other critics groups. An Oscar nomination would make him the third Asian actor in Academy history to earn a Best Actor bid and the first of Pakistani descent. This would follow Ahmed’s Emmy win in 2017 for the HBO miniseries “The Night Of,...

Don’t look for five of our predicted 10 Oscar contenders for screenplay in the 2021 Writers Guild of America Awards nominations announced February 16. They didn’t qualify for consideration under the guild’s guidelines or those of its international partners.
We are predicting that “Nomadland” will win Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars. Three of its likely Oscar rivals — “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “News of the World” and “One Night in Miami” — contend at the WGA Awards as do “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and “The White Tiger.”
The Original Screenplay Oscar frontrunner “The Trial of the Chicago 7” is in the running here as is “Promising Young Woman,” which sits in second place on our chart. With “Mank,” “Minari” and “Soul” ineligible at the guild kudos, that race is rounded out by “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Palm Springs” and “Sound of Metal.”

A few minutes ago, the 2021 Writers Guild Award nominations were announced. Coming to us, of course, from the Writers Guild of America, this Guild is one that can clue us in a bit to how Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Screenplay could go at the Oscars. This Guild do disqualify several titles ahead of time, so it’s not likely to resemble the Academy Award lineup in full, and even excludes a potential frontrunner, but by and large, these are ten of the maybe fifteen major contenders for a win come Oscar time. Read on to see who and what were cited by the WGA today… Here now are the nominees: Original Screenplay Judas and the Black Messiah, Screenplay by Will Berson & Shaka King, Story by Will Berson & Shaka King and Kenny Lucas & Keith Lucas; Warner Bros. Palm Springs, Screenplay by Andy Siara, Story by Andy Siara & Max Barbakow; Hulu Promising Young Woman,...
