‘A French slasher throwback… deadly serious in giving its audience the pleasures of a damn good scare’
Mark Kermode
Prepare for some pulse-racing, heart-pounding High Tension. The fantastic French horror from Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes (2006), Piranha 3D) gets a brand-new Limited Edition 4K/Blu-ray Dual Edition Box set release from masters in the field Second Sight Films.
A new entry to the French extremity movement on its release in 2003, this fearsomely violent slasher stars Cécile de France (The French Dispatch, Around the World in 80 Days) and Maïwenn (One Deadly Summer, The Fifth Element), as two best friends whose sleepover goes shockingly awry. This brutally violent, fear-fuelled cult classic arrives in the Limited Edition and Standard Edition 4K and Blu-ray versions, on 22nd January 2024.
Alex (Maïwenn) and Marie’s (Cécile de France) study-weekend takes a savage turn, when a murderous maniac (Philippe Nahon – Irreversible), turns up on their doorstep.

To tell the truth it's been taking me a coven's worth of willpower not to use this "Great Moments in Horror Actressing" series week after week as an excuse to go through the cast-list of Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria one by one by one and highlight every single woman in the film -- there's nary a weak link in sight, everybody is serving something special, and that's a lot of every-bodies given how deep that cast-list runs.
Thankfully I'm not alone in my obsession, and one of my favorite horror writers on the entire internet, Stacie Ponder at Final Girl, has devoted the entire month of October to doing just that. She's not just talking the stellar cast though -- every day she's dissecting themes and images and if you ask me proving to the naysayers that Guadagnino gifted us with a profoundly rich and moving horror masterpiece,...

Yesterday, amid a crush of sweaty people desperate for last-minute props, I visited a local Halloween superstore with my daughter, looking for a Pikachu mask. Well, there wasn’t much to choose from in the Cute Kid Division. But this particular hall of Halloween hell definitely had the adult sensibility covered. Of course there were the usual skimpy or otherwise outrageous costumes for purchase —ladies, you can dress up like a sexy Kim Kardashian-esque vampire out for a night of Hollywood clubbing, and gents, how about impressing all the sexy Kim Kardashian vampires at your party by dressing up like a walking, talking matched set of cock and balls! It’s been a while since I’ve shopped for fake tools of terror, but it seems there’s been a real advance in sophistication in the market for “Leatherface-approved” (I swear) chainsaws with moving parts and authentic revving noises,...

The women of Viscera have done it again. Not content with shining a light on the works of talented female horror filmmakers, Shannon Lark and Heidi Honeycutt (editor-in-chief of Planet Fury) have organized the Etheria Film Festival, a new juried fest dedicated to highlighting the best new short fantasy and sci-fi films made by women.
Taking place this Saturday (September 15) at The Somerville Theater in Somerville, Massachusetts, the Etheria Fest will be screening 15 short films in competition. Among those assisting Honeycutt and Lark in the judging process are filmmaker Rachel Talalay, director of the awesome cult fave Tank Girl ; Harvard Film Archive conservator Liz Coffey; and director/blogger/illustrator Stacie Ponder — yes, the Final Girl herself! Also being shown is We Are All Cylons, a documentary that looks at the rabid fandom inspired by Battlestar Galactica.
I asked Honeycutt why she felt the need to establish another film fest devoted to women filmmakers.

Female filmmakers in the sci-fi and fantasy genre will be celebrated with the first ever Etheria Film Festival, to be held in September 2012.
Etheria is the brainchild of film journalist Heidi Honeycutt and the Viscera Organisation, a not-for-profit group dedicated to increasing the visibility of female genre filmmakers.
Last month, the Viscera Film Festival Carpet Ceremony put the spotlight on up-and-coming women directors in the horror genre with a programme of new short films and a celebrity judging panel of industry veterans.
A Viscera spokeswoman said: "The Viscera Film Festival has been showcasing the best in emerging female horror film talent since 2007.
"But why stop with horror? There are talented women filmmakers across every genre. The Etheria Film Festival is the only film festival in the world that screens, exclusively, the best new short science fiction and fantasy films directed by women from around the globe."

Spreading the word: Renae De Liz, the creator behind Womanthology, is in the hospital, according to husband Ray Dillon: Hi, everyone-
Been avoiding saying anything publicly because I didn’t want to cause worry prematurely and wanted to make sure I had more information and talked to our immediate family first. Renae is recovering right now, just very slowly. She has an infection that has spread into her blood and kidneys, as well as pneumonia and some other things we’re worried about, but I don’t want to say anything there until test results are back. As of today she’s doing a bit better and we’re told after perhaps a week in the Critical Care Unit she should be mostly recovered. It got really bad and we almost lost her. :( Been a very rough couple of weeks. We’re behind in work, income, communication, and...

Female Eye Film Festival in Toronto, Canada, is showing some brand new thrillers directed by women that you will Not have seen playing anywhere else.
High on my list of stuff to see at Female Eye is Stacie Ponder's Ludlow, which stars Viscera founder Shannon Lark, and which I watched being edited. It's screening on March 18th and is guaranteed to scare the shit out of you.
Check out the other movies, some of which are making their world premieres. I'm suprised that they shied away from using the word "horror" to describe some of these movies; drama and thriller and suspense seem to be far less offensive terms to the mainstream movie-going public. Thank God we're not the mainstream movie-going public, eh?
Schedule you need to know!!!!:

"Take Back the Knife" is a monthly column about women in horror by genre writer/director Stacie Ponder.
If I had a time machine, I would grab a copy of Drive Angry 3D (which opens today) and travel back to 42nd Street in New York circa 1974 so I could see the film the way it's meant to be seen: in a grindhouse theater.
Drive Angry is pure ludicrous exploitation flick, all action and so over-the-top, the top might as well not exist. It's violence, fast muscle cars, blood, foul language, sex, full-frontal nudity, simultaneous sex and violence, and some more violence- it's more a movie that happens to you than it is a movie you simply watch. As such, it would be best served up in a lo-fi setting where the floors are sticky, the popcorn is of an indeterminate vintage, and the stains on the seats mean your pants...

Stacie Ponder, best known for her popular horror blog Final Girl, has been making short films for a while now. So when I heard she'd grabbed a video camera and disappeared into the desert to make a movie called Ludlow, I was interested, but not surprised. I've been acquainted with Ponder for a few years and she's always doing off-the-wall things like that. I moved from interested to intrigued when I learned the star of her film would be actress Shannon Lark, Fangoria magazine’s first Spooksmodel and founder of horror collective The Chainsaw Mafia. I'd interviewed La Lark previously and found her to be a smart, multi-talented and, yes, beautiful woman who was very much in charge of her own fate. Ponder and Lark, together again for the first time. I couldn't wait to...
