The ReFrame coalition has awarded 26 feature films released in 2019 with its ReFrame Stamp, which recognizes the top 100-grossing gender-balanced narrative and animated features. The list, which grew from 20 total films that earned the stamp a year ago, includes Booksmart, Captain Marvel, Harriet, Hustlers and Oscar Best Picture nominee Little Women.
This reflects gains for women in the important roles of director, department heads, and women of color leads and co-leads. With an aim to increase the number of women of all backgrounds working in film, TV, and media, the ReFrame Stamp, which is showcased in end credits and appears on IMDb, serves as a mark of distinction for projects that have demonstrated success in gender-balanced hiring. Additional points are awarded to content that has women of color in key positions.

Moments ago, the Film Independent Spirit Award nominations for 2019 were announced. Though pulling from a very different crop than the Academy Awards do, the Spirit Awards do have some cross over each year. While success here assures a title of little, making moves with this group never hurts while wooing the Academy. Today, we saw several Oscar hopefuls try and score some love, while a few received damaging snubs. Mostly, though, the status quo remains, as movies jockey for position heading into the holiday season. Go figure, this isn’t going to be an easy year to predict. Leading the way were The Lighthouse and Uncut Gems, each with five nominations apiece. The former from Robert Eggers definitely over performed, relative to expectations here, while the latter from the Safdie Brothers solidified its status as a player on the indie precursor stage. More likely Oscar fare such as Clemency, The Farewell,...

“We have to go to a party tonight,” the normally studious high school senior says on the last day of classes. “Nobody knows that we are fun. We didn’t party because we wanted to focus on school and get into good colleges.” Her Bff replies: “And it worked.” But, the friend notes, “Irresponsible people who party also got into those colleges.”

Megan Ellison’s fledgling division teams up with creator Chris McCoy and Sausage Party co-director Conrad Vernon on adult CG-animated series.
Annapurna TV is developing Amberville based on Tim Davys’ ‘Mollisan Town’ book series for Amazon Studios’ Prime Video platform.
Amberville is set in a city populated by living stuffed animals. The dark comedy centres on a reformed Teddy Bear who is pulled back into the criminal underworld when his former boss enlists him for an impossible new job.
McCoy wrote the pilot based on a story he co-wrote with Vernon, whose directing credits include Shrek 2 and Madagascar 3 and is attached to direct the pilot.
The project reunites Vernon with Annapurna who produced his film Sausage Party, which Sony Pictures released last year. McCoy wrote and directed last year’s Good Kids and has authored two novels.

Of the seven feature films in his just under two decade filmography, Todd Solondz has landed in Park City twice with 1996’s Welcome to the Dollhouse (Grand Jury Prize Dramatic winner) and 2002’s Storytelling. In our books, Wiener-Dog is the most anticipated sequel for 2016 and perhaps the elusive Cannes Main Comp berth (Solondz has only shown in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard and Directors’ Fortnight sections) will make this a Sundance longshot. Principal photography began in June with a zany cast comprised of Brie Larson, Danny DeVito, Ellen Burstyn, Julie Delpy, Greta Gerwig (see takes on the updated version of Heather Matarazzo’s Dawn character from Welcome to the Dollhouse), Zosia Mamet, Kieran Culkin, Michael James Shaw, Tracy Letts and Devin Druid (Louder Than Bombs). It’ll be fun to see where the Wiener family tree updates occur and to be expected a generous dose of discomfort and joy marinated in...

For a few months now we’ve been hearing about a film called Sausage Party. Written by Seth Rogen and his creative partner Evan Goldberg, the R-rated animated movie is being set up at Sony and today, thanks to a press release, we have more details on it.
Sausage Party, as odd as it sounds, follows a sausage on a “quest to discover the truth about his existence.” The story will be filled with “all the irreverent, insightful and risqué R-rated humor that we have come to expect” from Rogen and Goldberg. The film, which is aiming for a 2015 release, will be directed by Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan.
As strange as this movie sounds, I love both Rogen and Goldberg and find their brand of humor to be extremely funny. Their latest effort, This Is The End, was one of my favorite comedies of the year and had me...
