Emmys producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay had reason to be upbeat the morning after the kudocast: In what seems to be a rarity for awards shows these days, their production earned almost universally high marks from critics and viewers. For the 75th annual celebration, the Jesse Collins Entertainment trio leaned into nostalgia and the history of television to create a three-hour event that paid tribute to the small screen.
“It was ambitious, and we were like, ‘Is this actually going to work?’ But we felt good about it in the end,” Collins told Variety on Tuesday morning. Except for one thing: The 75th Emmys on Fox faced an NFL wild card game, as well as news coverage of the Iowa caucuses. Throw in awards show fatigue (coming right after the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards) and confusion over the delayed Emmys (pushed four months from...

There were rumors that the cast of Friends would show up at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards to pay tribute to the late Matthew Perry, but that didn’t happen.
Matthew did get the final spot in the In Memoriam segment that aired on Monday (January 15) at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
The Friends theme song was even played as the In Memoriam piece ended, but the five surviving cast members – Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer – didn’t show up.
The producers of the Emmys telecast are now explaining why.

Producer Jeannae Rouzan-Clay told THR, “It’s still very fresh for them.”
Producer Jesse Collins added, “We had talked about it early on — but I can imagine, from their side, they’re mourning someone who was still very close to them. I can’t speak for them,...

Monday’s Emmys ceremony paid tribute to late Friends star Matthew Perry — but in a night filled with nostalgic reunions, his Friends castmates were nowhere to be found.
The producers did reach out to Perry’s Friends co-stars to participate, but “it’s still very fresh for them,” executive producer Jeannae Rouzan-Clay tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We had talked about it early on,” executive producer Jesse Collins adds, “but I can imagine, from their side, they’re mourning someone who was still very close to them. I can’t speak for them, but we all have to respect that they were their own family.

Mission accomplished: Not only did the Emmys end on time, but several times throughout the telecast, it was actually ahead of schedule. Variety caught up with Emmys telecast producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay on Tuesday morning — just hours after wrapping the event — and all three felt gratified and relieved to have pulled off an Emmys befitting the kudocast’s 75th anniversary.
“Our intention was to create a love letter to television and to sprinkle in the reunions and the nostalgia throughout,” said Harmon. “It was received the way that we hoped it would be, so we’re glad it made everybody happy.”
Added Collins: “There was a definitely a little anxiety going into it, because we took some swings. It was ambitious and we were like, ‘Is this actually going to work?’ But we felt good about it in the end.”

All it took was a scan of social media or a few afterparty conversations on Monday night to learn that the 75th Primetime Emmys, delayed four months by the Hollywood strikes, were worth the wait.
The three-hour Fox telecast, which went over well with critics, was polished, moved at a nice clip, featured talent from decades of TV and, in contrast to the monologue drama at the Golden Globes just eight days earlier, saw host Anthony Anderson lauded for his efficient and warm navigation of what is so often a thankless job.
“Anthony was undeniably the host with the most,” said Allison Wallach, Fox Entertainment’s president of unscripted programming. “Those cast reunions and mind-blowing sets were beyond compare and the winner speeches were filled with heart and humor … and on time, thanks to the watchful and hilarious Mama Doris.”

“Succession” star Sarah Snook won the Emmy on Monday night for outstanding actress in a drama series. The win was Snook’s first Emmy for playing Shiv Roy on the hit HBO series, which ended its run last May after four seasons.
“Thanks to everyone who voted and for loving the show as much as we did as a cast making it and as a crew making it,” Snook began after accepting the award from Jodie Foster, who presented the category. “We put our all into it and the bar was set so high. I think that’s what spurred us on from every department. We all gave it our best, led by [series creator] Jesse Armstrong and [director] Mark Mylod and my cast who I love so much and I’m going to miss.”

“Succession” star Kieran Culkin won the Emmy on Monday night for outstanding actor in a drama series. The win was Culkin’s first Emmy for playing the younger Roman Roy on the hit HBO series, which ended its run last May after four seasons.
The actor used the moment to thank his costars, the show’s creators, his mother, his manager — and shoot his shot for more kids with his wife, Jazz Charton.
“And of course my beautiful wife, Jazz,” Culkin said at the end of his acceptance speech. “Thank you for sharing your life with me and giving me two amazing kids, Kinsey Sioux and Wilder Wolf. I love you so many and so much. And Jazz, I want more.”
That line got big cheers, laughter and “oohs” from the audience. Culkin added, before walking off the stage: “You said! You said ‘maybe,’ if I win! I love you so much.

The ceremony, curated by Emmy Awards executive producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon, and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay, will pay homage to TV history across decades, featuring cast reunions from the 1950s to the present, per Variety. If we can bring some nostalgia to that stage, then I think that we’ve done a good deed.

The greatly delayed 75th annual Primetime Emmys are only a month away, but the ceremony finally has a host: Anthony Anderson. The “Black-ish” star will helm the January 15, 2024, telecast on Fox, live at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt from downtown Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater (formerly the Microsoft) at the L.A. Live complex.
“With our industry’s recent challenges behind us, we can get back to what we love — dressing up and honoring ourselves,” Anderson said in a statement. “And there’s no better celebratory moment to bring the creative community together than the milestone 75th Emmy Awards. The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and Writers Guild of America (WGA) strikes have taken a toll on the 75th Emmy Awards. Originally scheduled to take place on Monday, September 18, 2023 at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live, the Television Academy and Fox have moved out of 2023 entirely and landed on a new January 15, 2024 date.
SAG-AFTRA and the WGA are no closer to striking deals with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). Writers have been walking the picket lines for 100 days, and the actors officially joined them on July 14, 2023. Both SAG-AFTRA and WGA are seeking fair deals, including new guidelines for the use of AI and residual payments.

The Television Academy and Fox have today announced what many have long suspected: The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards have moved to January 2024 from September 2023, with the awards ceremony now set for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
While the change from the previously set date of September 18 is still a bit of wishful thinking, as both the WGA and SAG unions are still on strike and seeking to negotiate fair deals with the AMPTP, it does open up the schedule enough to where, should deals happen over the next couple of months, the TV Academy and Fox would likely still have time for the standard amount of pre-production needed to put on the awards telecast.
Unfortunately for the TV Academy, the move does strip the Emmys of its influence on the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, the two other major TV awards that usually air in January. Should neither awards...

The iconic Emmy statuette is getting a rare enhancement.
The TV Academy unveiled on Tuesday a subtle new look for this year’s Emmy statuette: an inscription of “75” at the base of the figurine. The enhancement will be added to the statuette for this year only amid the 75th anniversary of the award ceremony that celebrates and honors the best in television.
According to the Television Academy, it took 47 proposals for the first Emmy design before the 48th was accepted by the Television Academy. “This time it took us seemingly 48 weeks of meetings, illustrations, debates, false starts and ruminating to get to the finish line,” Scott Buford, senior creative director for the Television Academy, said in a statement.
“When I was first asked by the Academy’s leadership to explore altering the statuette, my first reaction was, ‘Are you sure? This is like giving a nip and tuck to the...

The show kicked off with host Taraji P. Henson, presenter Janelle Monae and best female R&b/pop artist winner Jazmine Sullivan all addressing the recent Supreme Court decision to reverse the Roe v. Wade ruling within the first 17 minutes of the show.

With the 93rd Oscars forced to adapt and change with the coronavirus pandemic still a major factor, the production team for the April 25 ceremony announced Wednesday reflects those conditions.
Producers Jesse Collins, Stacey Sher and Steven Soderbergh unveiled 14 key members of their team for the show, which will air live on ABC from both the Oscars’ usual home at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and downtown Los Angeles’ Union Station. Among the returning veterans are newcomers including The Roots drummer and filmmaker Questlove, who had previously performed on the telecast but is now musical director; Oscar-nominated screenwriter Richard Lagravenese, who also penned the Soderbergh-directed Liberace movie Behind the Candelabra, as a writer; and Dream Hampton, a writer and executive producer of Surviving R. Kelly, also as as writer.
All three are first-timers in the Oscar world. Other newcomers include Jesse Collins Entertainment veterans Jeannae Rouzan-Clay and Dionne Harmon as co-producers. They will be joined by veterans of the annual broadcast including supervising producer Rob Paine, who has been part of the Oscars team for 20 years; co-producer Raj Kapoor, back for a fifth consecutive year overseeing screen content and performances; and Taryn Hurd who returns for the eighth consecutive year as talent producer.
Head writer writer Jon Macks, the longtime Tonight Show With Jay Leno scribe who returns for his 24th Oscars telecast after recent gigs writing for the 2020 Democratic National Convention and the Celebrating America inauguration special, will lead a team that includes Amberia Allen (second Oscars), Rodney Barnes (Wu-Tang: An American Saga) and Mitchell Marchand (MTV Music Video Awards) along with Lagravenese and Hampton.
Other veterans returning include production designer David Rockwell, who served in that role for the 81st and 82nd Oscars and is a Tony winner with more than 60 theatrical productions including She Loves Me, Kinky Boots and Harispray (he also designs Nobu hotels and restaurants); and lighting designer Robert Dickinson, who returns for his 32nd Oscars show with 18 Primetime Emmy Awards to his credit — including three for Oscars telecasts.
As Deadline scooped this week, there is no single host planned for this year’s ceremony, with producers now out with offers to talent they hope will come in to present the categories on a rotating basis.
Glenn Weiss returns to direct the Oscars for a sixth straight year but little else is known about the makeup of the ceremony. Organizer the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has told nominees there will be a ban on Zooms, so popular with other Covid-era shows including Golden Globes, Critics Choice and the upcoming truncated SAG Awards.
“Our plan is that this year’s Oscars will look like a movie, not a television show, and Glenn has embraced this approach and come up with ideas of his own on how to achieve this,” Collins, Sher and Soderbergh said when Weiss came aboard last week.

In recent years, the Grammy Awards have taken advantage of having so many top artists in one place by taping a second show a day or two after the main Grammy ceremony, all-star tributes to artists like Prince, Elton John, Stevie Wonder and others. While this year was different in many ways, they did it again, but rather than honoring a single artist, the Grammys decided to embrace their recent diversity agenda — evidenced by Bmac and honor “Sounds of Change — the iconic songs that inspired social change and left an everlasting imprint on history.” While the Grammy tributes usually air a few weeks after the big show, this one is airing tonight, just three days later, from 9 p.m. – 11 p.m. Et/Pt.
