The Berlin Film Festival has revealed its juries, and the addition of Liu Jian’s animated feature “Art College 1994” to its competition lineup, which now has 19 films and is complete.
In addition to the already announced actor Kristen Stewart as president, the International Jury members will be actor Golshifteh Farahani (Iran/France), director and writer Valeska Grisebach (Germany), director and screenwriter Radu Jude (Romania), casting director and producer Francine Maisler (U.S.), director and screenwriter Carla Simón (Spain), and director and producer Johnnie To.
“Art College 1994” is set in China in the 1990s. It follows a group of young people who “prepare to face a world caught between tradition and modernity,” according to the festival. The film, represented for world sales by Memento Intl., was originally destined for Cannes, but Liu and the film were reported to have faced bureaucratic obstacles, which put the kibosh on those plans. It has been a great year for character studies. Half of the films on my best of 2022 are primarily focused on just one or two performances, using longer-than-expected runtimes to dig into what truly makes them tick. From disgraced conductors to larger-than-life sex workers to pathological liars to Melbourne commuters, perhaps the only thing these character studies have in common is a willingness to go deep into the universal condition of what makes us human. It has made for a satisfying year. Complemented by genre pictures, ranging from sci-fi spectacle to eat-the-rich satire to the road movie, 2022 has delighted and surprised, with great films coming in from nine different countries and three different continents. Here are my picks for the 10 best films of the year.
Honourable mentions: Sick of Myself, Elvis, Black Night, Piggy, The Bear Season One, Episode Seven, Argentina vs Holland Quarter Final.

Perhaps you know the feeling, the strange tingle of vertigo you get when you’re having an entirely normal conversation with an acquaintance, and you suddenly realize that for seemingly no reason — and often about the most inconsequential things — they are lying to you. Jöns Jönsson’s “Axiom,” a standout in this year’s Berlinale Encounters section, is physically set in a comfortably well-educated, middle-class Austrian environment. But its psychological terrain is discomfort. This is a fascinatingly perceptive film about casual falsehoods, compulsive fakery and crumbling facades.
Appropriately, then, it begins in an art gallery. Julius is a museum attendant, moving soundlessly from room to room, politely chiding visitors who take photos or drink from water bottles. What he doesn’t do, and what Johannes Louis’ deceptively anodyne camera never allows him to do, is fade into the background the way museum attendants should. You are always conscious of him there,...

Memories are filtered by opinion and worldview. How often is it allowed to wander into a new life? We all are accessing a sea of stories, as Salman Rushdie calls it, or are “dipping into the big cauldron of story,” as Maria Tatar said about the Brothers Grimm.
Julius, played by the marvelously versatile and uncanny Moritz von Treuenfels, works as a security guard in a museum. He gives tips to new hire Erik (Thomas Schubert) about the “horror” of having to stand by the video art installations, about tyranny and negotiation, and invites the newcomer from Lower Austria to join him and his friends, Jonas (Max Themak), Lizi (Ines Marie Westernströer), and Savo (Zejhun Demirov) on a sailing trip on his aristocratic family’s boat.
From the very start writer/director Jöns Jönsson has us pay attention to what is overheard. Be it a tour guide explaining a Mondrian.
