This month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies. Some selections reflect a specific day or event in July, and others were chosen at random.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings feature a giant monster bug, home invaders, a zombie boy, a killer videographer, and a water spirit.
Blue Monkey (1987)
Directed by William Fruet.
As its name suggests, Pandemonium Day (July 14) is all about bedlam. And William Fruet’s Canadian tax-shelter movie Blue Monkey (a.k.a. Insect!) is as chaotic as they come. Originally called “Green Monkey” at one point, this movie’s final title is still a misnomer; there are no monkeys here. Instead, the characters battle a deadly parasite inside a quarantined hospital.

We're very happy to hear that Salem Horror Fest will be making its return in April 2023! Film submissions are already open and more details will be revealed in the coming months, but in the meantime, check out the official press release below and the killer artwork from David Dembowski!
Salem, Massachusetts - April 20, 2022 - Named by FilmFreeway as one of the “best genre festivals in the world,” the aggressively, and unapologetically queer Salem Horror Fest will return to the Halloween capital of the world for it’s sixth year next April 20 - April 30, 2023.
Addressing the move, festival director Kay Lynch said, “ Salem is a nightmare. Every October, half a million visitors descend upon a city population of 50,000 - snarling traffic, crowding the streets, and commandeering an extremely low inventory of hotel rooms driving up prices so that no one can travel to Witch City for a weekend without dropping 2,500. This is not the experience,...

As a kid, the holiday has always been enjoyable. Mainly because I would hang out with my family and we would shoot of fireworks and liked fire and blowing stuff up. As I grew up, the holiday became a little stranger for me. I started observing it differently where more people use it as an excuse to drink a lot. Like, A Lot. Factor in the intoxication plus the fact that good portion of our population in America injure themselves from fireworks, whether it is a faulty explosive or someone who didn’t know what they were doing. The other thing that I thought was odd is that there is a feeling of anarchy and carefree-ness where some bad things could happen when someone isn’t looking. The new film, You Are Not Alone, captures some of that.

Ever since the overrated phenomena that was The Blair Witch Project (1999), low budget horror filmmakers have capitalised on the increasing use of modern and now easily accessible technology to add a different slant to the genre; The lack of money being a probable factor in the making of these films, but at least it gives them a documentary style lacking in more mainstream efforts.
But it is fair to say that the bulk of the films produced by these budding Camcorder Coppelas are nothing short of dire. And for my own personal point of view, I do not care for this type of filmmaking. Cloverfield (2008) gave me a headache and George Romero’s Diary of the Dead (2007) falls way short of being good. Let’s face it, if you are being menaced by a zombie, and alien or a serial killer, would you really lug around a camera and film...
