Writing love songs was never really Marina Allen’s thing. “It almost felt like I wasn’t interested,” the 31-year-old Los Angeles songwriter says. “I’ve been in love before, but I don’t think I really could write about it in a way that I felt like I had something to say.”
But all of that changes with Allen’s new album, Eight Pointed Star, out June 7 via Fire Records. Over nine tracks, she spins wistful tales in tones of folk and Americana that mark the first love songs she’s ever written.

Indie rockers Real Estate have shared “Haunted World,” the latest offering from their upcoming sixth album Daniel. Stream it below.
Though vocalist Martin Courtney claims that “This haunted world is killing me” in the song, it’s as breezy and ever. With a warm acoustic guitar and a chord change that illuminates the end of each musical phrase, “Haunted World” seems to be at peace with the anxiety Courtney depicts. “There is no rest, there is no sleep/ The day becomes the night,” he sings, referencing the existential toll of everyday life.
Real Estate previewed Daniel last November with lead single “Water Underground.” The album, which is dedicated to producer Daniel Tashian, will be the group’s first LP since 2020’s The Main Thing.
Real Estate have also announced a “Daniel-Only” album release show at Union Pool in New York on February 22nd. Admission is free with a Rsp for anyone who has a “first,...

Real Estate have announced their upcoming album, Daniel, set for release on February 23rd, 2024 via Domino Recording Co. As a preview, the New Jersey outfit has shared their first single from the album, “Water Underground,” and announced a 2024 North American tour.
Daniel marks Real Estate’s first full-length album since their 2020 release, The Main Thing, and is their sixth studio LP. Recorded with Grammy-winning producer Daniel Tashian, Daniel aims to “connect the uninhibited wonder of Real Estate’s earliest work with the earned perspective of adulthood.” The band reunited in Nashville for the album, sharing a rental space after being separated from each other for the past few years.
As for “Water Underground,” Martin Courtney of Real Estate said that the single is a song about writing songs. “I think ‘Water Underground’ is like the unconscious, the mysterious part of your brain where creativity comes from,” he said in a press release.
