On Wednesday, the Arizona Republic newspaper endorsed Hillary Clinton for president. And while their readership may be a fraction of the New York Times's, their endorsement of Clinton is far more significant: Since the paper was first published more than 120 years ago, back in 1890, its editorial board has never thrown its weight behind a Democratic candidate. That's right: not Roosevelt, not Kennedy, not Carter, not the first Clinton - not even President Obama. Its history, the paper said, "reflects a deep philosophical appreciation for conservative ideals and Republican principles." But "this year is different," the paper's editorial board wrote. "The...

Lovecraftian creatures attack in Noct, an arcade-style horror video game debuting October 22nd from C3SK and Devolver Digital. For our latest Q&A feature, we recently caught up with the game's designer and developer, Chris Eskins, who discussed creating the nightmarish new world of Noct.
Thanks for taking the time to converse with us today, Chris. For starters, how did you come up with the idea for Noct?
Chris Eskins: Thanks for having me! Noct was originally an experiment which started out as a top-down zombie survival game for my friends and I to play. They recommended I start showing it off outside of our small group, and it kind of just evolved into what it is today. I have always been a fan of Cthulian-style monsters, like Eldritch Horror. So transitioning away from zombies to something bigger seemed like the best design path to take.
Noct was a successful Kickstarter campaign.

Jayden Wilson, the terminally ill 5 year old boy who became an internet star last month, when his father shared a surprise birthday video of himself jumping off a roof dressed as the boy's favorite superhero, Spider-Man, has passed away this past Christmas Eve. The boy had been battling stage 4 brain cancer for over a year. From the Daily Mail: Writing on the family's Facebook page, Mike Wilson, the boy's father said: 'Late on Christmas Eve, Jayden passed away peacefully in his sleep, warm in his bed. Jayden to us, is the most inspiring person ever, fighting this tumor with all his might.' R.I.P. little Spidey.

There are many great dads in the world, but few can say that they became a superhero to surprise their child. That.s exactly what United Kingdom citizen Mike Wilson did for his son Jayden, who is suffering from a Grade Four Stem brain tumor. Donning the costume of Jayden.s favorite superhero, Spider-Man, Mike set up a GoPro camera outside their house to catch Jayden.s reaction as Marvel.s esteemed Wall-Crawler greeted him with a happy fifth birthday. Check it out! At seen in the video, there.s no one outside at first, but as Jayden walks slightly forward, Spider-Man jumps from the roof and surprises him and his family. It was an entrance reminiscent of how the character often arrives at the scene of a crime. Putting on his best American accent, Wilson asks Jayden hold old he is, asks him for a hug and carries him...

Just over a year ago, Doctors diagnosed young Jayden Wilson, who was 4 at the time, with a grade IV brainstem glioma. It's the most severe malignant brain tumor because these tumors show a very rapid growth. Jayden's parents were told by doctors their son only had about a year to live. Knowing that Jayden's next birthday might also be his last his father, Mike Wilson, decided to make it extra special. Mike, a parkour enthusiast, dressed up as Jayden's favorite superhero, Spider-Man, and leaped off the roof of their Basingstoke, U.K. home to greet the awestruck child. Mike hid a camera by the front door so that he could capture Jayden's reaction, and then several days ago posted it on YouTube for everyone to enjoy. You can watch the tender father and son moment in the video below. Jayden's father explained to The Independent why and how he put...

If there’s one film that I saw in 2013 that stayed with me longer than any other, it is Motivational Growth. Most of you haven’t had the chance to see it yet, but I have a feeling that when you do, you will love it as well. I’ll admit, that if somebody had told me that I would absolutely love, a film about a guy talking to a huge pile of intelligent mold that is growing in his bathroom floor, I’d probably have told them that they were insane. It’s an absurd premise, but some of the greatest films of all time have absurd premises as well. Motivational Growth is shot, acted, and edited so exceptionally well, that I think it will appeal to many, even those that aren’t usually a fan of oddball indie horror flicks. The details of a North American release of the film have surfaced.

If you've heard of Devolver Digital, you're probably familiar with their support and release of last year's Hotline Miami, the blood-soaked, neon-drenched top-down action game from Dennaton that made a lot of best-of lists. Devolver co-founder as well as game and film industry vet Mike Wilson wants to make Devolver known not only for their support of indie games, but indie film as well, launching Devolver Digital Films this week at South by Southwest. Don't go looking for a Hotline Miami movie right out the gate--right now, Austin-based Devolver is simply looking to get their feet wet with distributing some promising indies based on their experience promoting promising indie games. In this roundup from the Encore and Mumbrella Annual, we look back at seven of the most underwhelming teaser campaigns from the last 12 months.
1. Blackberry ‘Wake Up’
Speed boats with banners, a flashmob outside the Apple Store and a video blog by Nate ‘Blunty’ Burr. This was the teaser of the year. The reveal? Wait for it… a landing page. BlackBerry’s rivals sat back and laughed. Naked boss Mike Wilson described the strategy as pre-digital age. Ouch. Wake up indeed, BlackBerry.
2. Canadian Club ‘Beer Fairy’
Only slightly less oddball than The Works’ effort for Jim Beam was the creation of a sweaty, smelly, fat, balding bogan bloke with wings in an unbranded video for Canadian Club.
3. Jim Beam ‘It’s time’
Tarzan calls, monkey noises and cries of the wild were let out over loud speakers around Sydney. Was it a trailer for a Jim Carrey film? No. It...

Naked Communications has appointed Catherine Donnelly from PR agency Hausmann to lead the Sydney office’s public relations offering.
Donnelly led the Sony business at Hausmann, and joins to work on clients including Pernod Ricard, Horticulture Australia and InMobi.
Naked’s Anz chairman Mike Wilson said: “We’re lucky to have worked with Catherine on the Sony business, so we know we’re getting the best. We are definitely looking forward to accelerating the growth of this part of the agency under Catherine’s leadership.”
Donnelly commented: “After so many years in PR, I craved working in a non-traditional environment and with people who are wired differently to us PR folk. Working with Naked on Sony was one of the highlights of my last role so the opportunity to collaborate with the brilliant minds and brands there was completely irresistible.”

Strategy agency Naked Communications has appointed Simon Veksner as head of ideas.
Veksner, who will be responsible for creative across the Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland offices, replaces Paul Swann, who moved to The Works in September.
He joins after a spell running his own agency Scamp Creative, which will now close. Veksner is also well known for his blog Scamp, which has a global following.
Veksner said: “Everything I wanted Scamp Creative to become – an intelligent, modern agency – Naked already is. The opportunity to work with the brilliant minds there, and help continue Naked’s growth as a true creative force, was far too good to pass up.”
Veksner’s career has involved roles at Saatchi & Saatchi, Ddb London, Bbh and Ddb Sydney.
Adam Ferrier, founder and global head of behavioural sciences said: “Naked has always been a strategically driven agency.

Over the last two days, Dr Mumbo has been to three different media industry events. At every one there’s been a common topic of conversation. That resignation email that went viral from Mec’s London office.
So it was perhaps little surprise that the biggest cheer of the night at the Mfa Awards (well, apart from the popular John Sintras being inducted into the hall of fame) went to the acceptance speech from Mike Wilson, chairman of Naked Communications. He told the audience: “I’d like to dedicate this award to all employees worldwide of Mec.”
Indeed, Wilson made two of the best speeches of the night. Pricking the predictability of some of those who had spoken before him, he picked up another one of Naked’s trophies with the words: “It would have been much better if the team at Naked had worked harder and the client had shown a bit more imagination.

Thirty is a tricky birthday for anyone - your twenties are in the rear-view mirror, and your forties start to sneak up (can you tell this writer is getting closer to the magic 3-0?...). But it's also the point at which you can reach a certain respectability, start to push towards (whisper it) adulthood, and make it clear that you're here to stay. All of which is a long-winded and possibly over-sharing way of saying that thirty years ago today, on June 11, 1982, "E.T: The Extra Terrestrial" was released in theaters.
Despite Steven Spielberg's track record, it wasn't necessarily expected to be a major blockbuster -- one major studio had already turned it down. But a major blockbuster is exactly what it turned out to be -- it was the biggest of all time, in fact, holding the worldwide position until "Jurassic Park" in 1993, and the domestic crown until...

The strategy for BlackBerry’s teaser “Wake Up” campaign has been labelled 15 years out of date by the boss of a rival agency.
Speaking on this week’s Mumbrellacast, Mike Wilson, chairman of Naked Communications, praised the execution of the campaign but said the strategy was “pre-digital age”.
The Wake Up teaser campaign has seen a series of stunts with campaigners holding up placards outside the Apple Store, in the background crowd on Seven’s Sunrise and elsewhere. Paid media activity has focused on a website countdown.
The strategy is being led by Sydney based agency Tongue. Among Tongue’s management are former Naked staffers John Du Vernet and Jonathan Pease.
Wilson said on the podcast: “The actual tease activity… was very well executed and generated a lot of conversation. But where it falls down is that I don’t think it was particularly well constructed within a communication strategy framework.

Naked has won a pitch for the communications strategy, PR and experiential business of mobile advertising network InMobi, which relaunched in Australia at the start of February.
The assignment brings to an end InMobi’s short relationship with Access PR, which handled the client when it relaunched in Australia.
An Access PR spokesman told Mumbrella that the agency declined to pitch after working to the end of a three-month contract.
Naked’s brief is to introduce InMobi’s offer to agencies and marketers.
Francisco Cordero, Gm and regional director of InMobi Australia and New Zealand said: “We have recently expanded our local office in Sydney and we were looking for an integrated agency to work with us to grow our local footprint and brand across Australia and New Zealand. Naked Communications is a dynamic agency that will be able to support and partner with us in this exciting period of growth for InMobi.

One of Australia’s most publicity-shy agencies has adopted a new positioning around the principle of being open.
At its Sydney offices last night, the new boss of Zenith Optimedia Ian Perrin announced that the Publicis Groupe media agency was to be “more open” in its approach to other agencies, media owners, trading, innovation and sourcing talent.
Zenith has been virtually anonymous since former CEO Belinda Rowe left in 2009, with regional boss Phil Talbot preferring for the agency to operate under the radar.
The agency boasts an enviable client list that includes Nab, Lion Nathan, Foxtel, News Limited and Qantas.
It is the first big move from Perrin, who joined from Naked at the end of last year. An early sign of his ambitions was the hire of the agency’s first chief innovation officer from creative agency Bmf last month.
“Are we more open now? No. Are we working to become more open?...

The Indian film industry is probably the most prolific in the entire world. According to the latest count in 2010, India ranks the first in production of movies followed by Hollywood and China. But of the huge pantheon of regional and national Indian stars present in Indian cinema, Satyajit Ray is an icon who cannot be forgotten. His unique perspective on Indian life and his impact on Bengali, as well as, Indian cinema cannot be forgotten.

Take One: Dead-end England, twice

When I think of an actor who encapsulates exactly what is crucial, surprising and truly versatile about British male acting right now, none of the above quite pass muster, for me. Paddy Considine, on the other hand, hits the mark. His two roles for director Pawel Pawlikowski – kindly arcade manager Alfie in Last Resort (2001) and Jesus freak Phil in My Summer of Love (2004) – couldn’t be any different from one another, yet both cover all the above attributes.
