Gary Cooper movies on TCM: Cooper at his best and at his weakest Gary Cooper is Turner Classic Movies' “Summer Under the Stars” star today, Aug. 30, '15. Unfortunately, TCM isn't showing any Cooper movie premiere – despite the fact that most of his Paramount movies of the '20s and '30s remain unavailable. This evening's features are Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936), Sergeant York (1941), and Love in the Afternoon (1957). Mr. Deeds Goes to Town solidified Gary Cooper's stardom and helped to make Jean Arthur Columbia's top female star. The film is a tad overlong and, like every Frank Capra movie, it's also highly sentimental. What saves it from the Hell of Good Intentions is the acting of the two leads – Cooper and Arthur are both excellent – and of several supporting players. Directed by Howard Hawks, the jingoistic, pro-war Sergeant York was a huge box office hit, eventually earning Academy Award nominations in several categories,...

Big fantasy films aimed at younger audiences can be a dicey proposition, especially in this era of dystopian adaptations and romance epics. But Michael Caton-Jones is ready to shoulder the challenge of The Giant Under The Snow.Caton-Jones is developing the screenplay alongside Tom Williams, working from John Gordon’s book. The film finds three young heroes discovering a rusted old relic one Christmas, an artifact that contains a dark power. They’re soon plunging into a strange world of ancient magic and terrifying evil, racing against the clock to return the relic to its rightful owner before their enemies can retrieve it. The reason for the rush? The item can wake a legendary creature slumbering beneath the snow, one that can be used either as a force for good or for terrible destruction. No casting has taken place yet, but the co-writer/director wants the film ready to shoot this October at Pinewood,...

Well, now we're all living in a post-Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever world. To quote Bob Dylan, how does it feel? To quote Lucinda Williams, are you all right? Well, we looked at Twitter for the answers to those questions. First of all, we had to get some confusion out of the way: #WorstChristmasEver is not about your personal worst Christmas ever. #WorstChristmasEver The year everyone thought the hashtag was about them, when it's really about #grumpycatsworstchristmasever @evilhag— Sebastian Vdw (@SebastianVDW) November 30, 2014 Sorry, all. But more importantly, what did people think of the real Worst Christmas Ever? Can Someone...

Well, October is upon us again and along with colder weather, it also brings the horror movies hoping to cash in on this month of terror. Enter Annabelle, the spin-off, prequel to last year's The Conjuring. Annabelle tells the tale of Mia and John Gordon (Annabelle Wallis and Ward Horton) who begins to experience terrifying supernatural occurrences involving a vintage doll shortly after their home is invaded by satanic cultists. Think Childs Play without the tongue in cheek dialogue. This is a film that for the most part I found was trying a bit to hard to create tenison then creating belivible characters, which is where the movie fell flat. Also, the pacing is all over the place. Everything seems to be going at a snails pace until act three and everyone just loses their minds a bit. The acting left alot to be desired, so many times I wondered...

Annabelle, the prequel to The Conjuring, travels back in time to the titular doll's earlier haunting of an unsuspecting household.
Directed by The Conjuring cinematographer John R. Leonetti, Annabelle follows expecting newlyweds Mia (Annabelle Wallis) and John Gordon (Ward Horton) after the husband proudly presents his wife with a doll she'd long been searching for. After placing the new doll in the nursery, terrible things start to occur.

Critics expecting something as fresh as The Conjuring were sorely disappointed by the second installation starring the sinister toy. Annabelle has been accused of offering up cheap, expected frights that don't go much beyond cliche. Yet, others have found the film to be a successful spinoff of it's truly chilling predecessor. Furthermore, Alfre Woodard and Wallis are praised for their performances, as is Leonetti for his direction.

The Dark Knight Rises has triumphed at cinemas on both sides of the Atlantic, rocketing to the top of the UK box office chart on the first weekend of its release.
Michael Caine as Alfred with Christian Bale as a frail Batman in The Dark Knight Rises
The Batman trilogy's closing film debuted in top position in Britain after making £14.6 million in ticket sales, leaving its nearest rival - Ice Age: Continental Drift - in the shade with just £2.1 million.
The Dark Knight Rises, starring Christian Bale as the Caped Crusader, raked in an estimated £100 million on its opening weekend in the Us, although box office monitors declined to declare actual figures, following the Aurora shooting in Colorado.
There's been much talk of all the new characters introduced by director Christopher Nolan in his final Batman film - with stars Tom Hardy, John Gordon-Levitt and Anne Hathaway all coming on board.
