Netflix is taking the early lead at this year’s Emmys race, with six wins, thanks to the Television Academy’s juried award winners for animation, choreography, interactive programming and motion design, which were announced on Friday.
The outstanding individual achievement in animation category, a “juried” prize that means several, one or no winners could be named, wound up with eight honorees this year: Five from Netflix and three from YouTube.
Also landing its first-ever Emmy was Twitch, the live streaming platform popular in the gaming community and owned by Amazon. Twitch landed an Emmy for outstanding innovation in interactive media, for “Artificial.”
The CW, which is often snubbed by the Academy in general nominations, is the first linear network out the gate with an Emmy: “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” won the first-ever juried prize for outstanding choreography for scripted programming. Choreographer Kathryn Burns won the award, making it her second Emmy.

Stranger Things star Noah Schnapp has joined the cast of Wolves in the Walls, an animated Vr series based on the children’s book of the same name by Neil Gaiman. Schnapp will voice the brother of Lucy, who is the story’s protagonist.
Director Pete Billington had this to say about Schnapp in the role:
“We believe that Noah Schnapp brings a special quality to the brother role,” said “Wolves” director Pete Billington. “As soon as he read his first line, we were smitten. We love him in ‘Stranger Things’ and can’t wait for audiences to hear his performance in ‘Wolves in the Walls.'”
And here’s the synopsis for the film, also written by director Billington for IMDb:
Not everything is at it seems, when 8-year old Lucy's imagination proves to be a reality. Based on the work by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean, Wolves...

Annecy, France — John Kahrs’ “Age Of Sail” and Jan Pinkava and Mark Oftedal’s “Piggy” are two of the four state-of-the art-animated Vr projects that Google Spotlight Stories (Gss) has brought this year to Annecy. For the third year running, Gss – a division of Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects (Atap) group – and Google Vr are partnering with Vr@Annecy, a non-competitive category of the official selection.
At a Studio Focus Session on Wednesday presented by Gss, titled “Animation Everywhere,” the projects’ creators discussed their shorts while exploring the storytelling capabilities of Vr, as well as the limitations and possibilities of 360 immersion. The panel was moderated by Gss’ executive producer Karen Dufilho and Pinkava, Gss’ creative director. Panelists included Kahrs, directors François-Xavier Goby and Hélène Leroux (“Back to the Moon”), and artist Céline Desrumaux, production designer in “Age.”
Kahrs took home the best animated short Oscar and an Annie Award in 2013 for his hybrid “Paperman.
