India is on the verge of producing a global breakthrough streaming hit, leading industry players said over the past week across two panel discussions.
The mood in the country has been celebratory, even self-congratulatory, albeit with some justification, after the Oscar wins for S.S. Rajamouli’s “Rrr” and Karthiki Gonsalves and Guneet Monga’s “The Elephant Whisperers.” On the streaming front, all the major players have had several hits. SonyLIV scored an International Emmy nomination for “Rocket Boys,” for lead actor Jim Sarbh. Netflix won the International Emmy for comedy for “Vir Das: Landing” and “The Railway Men” cracked the streamer’s global non-English TV top 3 in addition to topping the South Asian chart. Locally, Netflix dominated the Filmfare streaming awards with 26 wins including prizes for “Trial by Fire,” “Kohrra” and “Scoop.”

Updated: Following the full buy-out of Endemol Shine India from CA Media, Banijay has combined Endemol Shine India and Banijay Asia under the leadership of Deepak Dhar, who has been appointed the founder and group CEO of the merged entity.
Having led Endemol’s Indian operations between 2005 and 2018, before launching Banijay Asia and overseeing its strategic growth, Dhar will now continue his focus on leading the wider group’s content strategies, partnerships, new business, and alliances, in addition to building both companies’ reputations in generating new IP which can travel the world.
Dhar will now “finesse the structure of Banijay in Asia, setting group-wide roles, as well as dedicated creative positions within the respective production labels,” the company said. Key personnel-related news is expected in the coming weeks.
Earlier: India is on track to be the international production hub for global reality formats “Survivor” and “Temptation Island,” Deepak Dhar has confirmed.

Exclusive: For Banijay Asia’s Deepak Dhar, 2023 is shaping up to be one of the busiest in a three-decade career in Indian media. He has just launched The Night Manager India on Disney+ Hotstar, is delivering several scripted and unscripted shows and is also working to position India has Banijay’s Asian production hub.
“There are four pillars to our business,” he tells Deadline. “Unscripted, scripted formats, original scripted and developing India as the outsourcing hub for a lot of the rest of Asia.”
The theory is countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh, which share professional and audience taste similarities to India, will use Banijay’s Indian production assets for remakes of formats such as Temptation Island and Survivor. “They can be easily produced here,” says Dhar, who can tap local tax credits to help finance series.

Meet any high-profile Indian director or producer these days, and the talk is all about bibles, writers rooms and showrunners, rather than making films. Driving down Mumbai’s main artery, the Western Express Highway, most of the billboards are promoting new premium drama series from Prime Video, Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar, rather than the latest Bollywood release.
Of course, the shift of talent from film to episodic is happening everywhere in the world, but in the fast-paced, opportunistic environment of the Hindi-language content industry, these trends have become supercharged. Netflix and Amazon moved in here around 2016, local broadcasters fought back with their own streaming services—Hotstar (now Disney+ Hotstar), SonyLiv, Viacom18’s Voot and ZEE5—and the demand for premium drama series started to skyrocket, as competitors tried to differentiate themselves in an overcrowded field.

Banijay, the European superindie that owns Keeping Up With The Kardashians producer Bunim/Murray, has found itself in the middle of its own dramatic reality series in recent months after emerging as one of the frontrunners to buy Big Brother and Black Mirror rival Endemol Shine.
Most companies would hide under the covers until a deal is either done or the gossip has subsided. However, Banijay, which has 61 production labels in 16 countries, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month and, as such, CEO Marco Bassetti is doing the rounds to blow out as many candles as possible.
“I can’t comment on something that there are so many speculations on,” the former Endemol Group President Bassetti inevitably told Deadline.
However, he does address the general need for scale in the international TV business and admits that it is looking at opportunities for consolidation. “We believe that we will be in...

International television execs are jetting home today after a spending a week in the South of France at the Mip TV and Canneseries events.
The wet and windy weather compounded a slightly low-key feel at the events with Reed Midem announcing that 10,000 people were in attendance. This official number is down on the 11,000 that arrived in 2016 and 11,500 people that attended last year and seems high given that the Croisette was rather quiet during the week, not helped by French air and rail strikes.
However, there were a plethora of deals announced at the market, with the biggest talking point in the bunkers and bars was the suggestion, broken by Deadline, that Endemol Shine Group could be sold with ITV and others starting to consider another TV mega-merger.
Endemol Shine itself was responsible for possibly the noisiest format in Cannes, German physical gameshow Big Bounce Battle, which was attracting interest from across a number of markets.
