“Beastly” is a retelling of “Beauty and the Beast” for tweens, but unfortunately, and contrary to the classic tale’s message, it’s all surface. Instead of embracing romance and enchantment, it goes through the motions, painting its story with plot contrivances and pretty people. For its target audience of 12-year-old girls, it will likely be both mindlessly harmless and yet not interesting or polished enough to truly capture their imaginations.
Alex Pettyfer plays rich, arrogant, beautiful New York teen Kyle, who trounces goth girl Kendra (Mary-Kate Olsen) in a class election then proceeds to ridicule her.
