Underrated but masterful, “The Girlfriend Experience” is probably one of the most audacious TV series you’ll ever see. The series is Starz’s adaptation of a 2009 film by the same name, and it recently finished its third season.
The Oscar award winner and executive producer of the show, Steven Soderbergh, goes on a fascinating expedition to explore the emotional complexities of sex work — among other themes. Each season introduces new characters but the plots are thematically connected in a beautiful way.

Starz is expanding its slate of historical dramas, which includes “Outlander” and “The Spanish Princess,” with a series order for another period piece.
The network has committed to an eight-episode season of “Dangerous Liaisons” which is based on the 18th century French epistolary novel of the same name by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos.
“Dangerous Liaisons” the series will tell the origin story of the novel’s iconic characters Merteuil and Valmont, exploring their early years and when they meet as passionate young lovers in the slums of Paris. “Call the Midwife” writer Harriet Warner will pen, showrun and executive produce the series.
The novel has been adapted variously for the stage and the big screen, most famously in 1988 by Warner Bros. and British director Stephen Frears. That starry iteration was headlined by Glenn Close as Merteuil, John Malkovich as Valmont and won three Oscars for adapted screenplay, costume design and production design.

Season 1 of The Girlfriend Experience received moderate success as a TV drama. Riley Keough received most of the positive reviews and was even nominated for a Golden Globe for her role. Unfortunately for fans, season 2 will not feature Keough’s character, Christine Reade. We’re not entirely sure whether creators Lodge Kerrigan and Amy Seimetz intended for the show to be an anthology, but it’s looking like so with the release of the season 2 trailer. In the trailer, we see two parallel stories, seemingly independent of each other. Whether these two story lines intertwine or intersect at some point

Riley Keough is an actress on the fast-track to stardom. After stepping foot onto George Miller’s ravaged wasteland for Mad Max: Fury Road, Keough turned heads and raised eyebrows with her compelling, nuanced performance in The Girlfriend Experience, Starz’s escort drama that is currently gearing up for a second season sans Christine Reade.
But even if Riley Keough’s dalliance with The Girlfriend Experience is essentially over, the star has locked down a handful of enticing roles long into 2018. The Discovery springs to mind as a notable example, while there’s also a reunion with Tge‘s Steven Soderbergh on the cards thanks to Nascar heist drama Logan Lucky. According to The Hollywood Reporter, we can now add The House That Jack Built to Keough’s bustling slate.

Riley Keough, star of The Girlfriend Experience and Mad Max: Fury Road, is in final negotiations to venture Under the Silver Lake for A24’s upcoming crime noir pic.
Variety has the scoop, revealing that the so-hot-right-now actress is on the verge of joining a cast that already boasts Fifty Shades star Dakota Johnson, Topher Grace and Andrew Garfield. David Robert Mitchell (It Follows) is the director at the helm, and the outlet goes on to confirm that Keough is circling the film’s female lead. Further details regarding her potential character were not disclosed at the time of writing; all we know for sure is that the thriller takes place in Los Angeles.

The Girlfriend Experience, Starz’s cool and calculated escort drama that first premiered earlier this year, has been picked up for a second season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
A loose spinoff of Steven Soderbergh’s 2009 thriller, it’s understood the filmmaker is on board to produce the sophomore run, which will hew closely to the anthology format, focusing on a host of new characters and risqué plotlines to boot.
No word yet on a release timeline for season 2 of The Girlfriend Experience, though the Powers That Be over at Starz are prepping for another deep dive into intimate relationships. It’ll run for 14 episodes in total.
“The first season of ‘The Girlfriend Experience’ allowed us to accommodate all viewing appetites with the traditional weekly episodic premiere schedule as well as a binging option for the entire 13-episodes,” said Carmi Zlotnik, managing director at Starz. “We’re excited to offer...

Casting “Magic Mike,” Steven Soderbergh saw an audition tape for then-22-year-old model-actress Riley Keough—whose genetic blessings from grandfather Elvis Presley and mother Lisa Marie are self evident—and hired her sight unseen for a small role as stripper Nora, where she learned all about “underwear and spray tans,” she told me in our video interview. She first met Soderbergh at a “Magic Mike” staff dinner with her co-stars Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey and her romantic interest Alex Pettyfer, to whom she was briefly engaged.
Five years later, “The Girlfriend Experience” producer Soderbergh cast Keough to carry the 13-part Starz half-hour series “The Girlfriend Experience,” now adapted from his 2009 film by indie writer-directors, Amy Seimetz (“Sun Don’t Shine”) and Lodge Kerrigan (“Claire Dolan”). TV shows on Starz typically draw pretty low ratings -- even Outlander, the cable channel's hit series. Could The Girlfriend Experience and its provocative subject matter end up drawing a big crowd? Does traditional television viewing even matter since the entire series is being made available on-demand? Will it be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Stay tuned.

Starz’s new steamy thinker The Girlfriend Experience is a reimagining of executive producer Steven Soderbergh’s 2009 film of the same name. The half-hour series stars the daring and beautiful Riley Keough (a.k.a. Elvis’ 26-year-old granddaughter) as Christine Reade, a second-year law student who is drawn into the world of a Gfe (a girlfriend experience) or, more simply, a girl for hire who serves the needs of whatever her high-paying clients desire (sex or no sex). Keough describes her character as being somewhat void of emotion. “She’s not into intellectualizing her emotions, as she doesn’t really care about a lot of … Continue reading →

Its protagonist may be a beautiful college student exploring the addictive business of “transactional sex,” but there’s no heat between the sheets of The Girlfriend Experience. That’s by design. This expansion of the Steven Soderbergh film about a Manhattan call girl (played by real adult actress Sasha Grey) is as compelling as it is icy cool, a show that observes the fallacies and fantasies of human desire through the eyes of a woman so single-mindedly careerist that she chooses to commodify her own carnal appetites, reworking pleasure as business with shrewd detachment.
If that sounds alienating, that’s because the series’ ostensibly salacious premise – girl meets world, world pimps out girl, girl finds that this is to her liking – is one of its many acts of narrative subterfuge. The binge forgives a lot. But it doesn't forgive everything. When you watch a lot of episodes of the same show in a row, it can be like inhaling a stack of Pringles, where you're not overly troubled by the flaws or the sameness in the product because it's just so easy to keep going on to the next one. I often get comments and emails from viewers who came to shows on Netflix or Amazon years after I initially reviewed them, expressing some version of, "I can see why this part bothered you watching week to week, but I barely noticed it in the binge." I've experienced it myself, even with non-streaming shows: when Showtime sent critics the first six episodes of Billions, I found myself mainly caught up in it because there were more episodes I could watch instantly to see what happened next; when I watched the...

Steven Soderbergh’s cult 2009 escort drama The Girlfriend Experience is about to get a second life of its own, with Starz now mere weeks away from unveiling its provocative new series.
Spun out from Soderberg’s racy feature film, Tge has recruited Riley Keough (Magic Mike) in its journey from one medium to another, who headlines the drama as curious law student Christine Reade. Living life on her own terms, Reade dabbles with the promiscuous lifestyle of a high-end escort.
Torn between school life and striking up sexual relationships with strangers, Reade’s innocent indulgence fast becomes an addition thanks to its intoxicating freedom, seeding a fascinating second life rife with moral and ethical implications. All 13 episodes of The Girlfriend Experience were written and directed by Lodge Kerrigan and Amy Seimetz. Speaking to Variety, the former touched base on the nature of their conflicted lead.
“Christine is intoxicated by her life as a Gfe.

With a premiere set for this weekend’s Sundance Film Festival, Starz has rolled out the latest trailer for The Girlfriend Experience, showcasing Magic Mike star Riley Keough indulging in the titular, promiscuous lifestyle.
Pitched as an anthology series spun out from Steven Soderbergh’s 2009 drama of the same name, Lodge Kerrigan and Amy Seimetz wrote and directed all 13 episodes of the upcoming drama, which will hope to follow in the successful footsteps of fellow Soderberg’s fellow miniseries, The Knick.
For The Girlfriend Experience, though, today’s new slice of footage is yet more evidence that Kerrigan and Seimetz are serving up a much more complex and nuanced portrayal of its central character. Forget Sasha Grey’s call girl, Starz’s new drama orbits around Christine Reade (Keough), a character who prides herself on her ability to balance a law internship at a prestigious school and indulging in brief and fleeting sexual relationships.

In his latest small-screen endeavour the film-maker revisits his 2009 film The Girlfriend Experience – but it marks a radical departure from its source material
Steven Soderbergh, who recently made the transition to television with the critically lauded period medical thriller The Knick, is hoping to strike gold again with his latest major small screen foray, The Girlfriend Experience. Unlike The Knick, the new Starz show finds the director mining his past for inspiration – in this case his 2009 film of the same name.

The show differs by attempting to provide an in-depth character study centered on law student Christine Reade (Riley Keough), who shifts her focus to the world of transactional relationships after being introduced to the trade through a friend. As one of the director’s more eclectic films in a career chock full of idiosyncratic creative ventures, Steven Soderbergh’s low-key The Girlfriend Experience attracted its fair share of criticism in 2009, though the somewhat controversial narrative lives on at Starz in the form of a brand new anthology-styled television series.
Casting Magic Mike alum Riley Keough in the role of Christine Reade, the footage teases the episodic nature of her foray into the seedy world of prostitution, going from client to client, all of whom are searching for GFEs – Girlfriend Experience, hence the title. Drawing Keough’s protagonist deeper and deeper into the profession, her confidants begin to share private information and strike up a bond akin to that between bona fide romantic partners. As Starz teases, “juggling two very different lives, Christine Reade, a second year law student quickly finds herself drawn into “The Girlfriend Experience” world, attracted...

Judging from the cool palette and clean lines of the first trailer for "The Girlfriend Experience," Steven Soderbergh's new Starz TV series may prove to be an improvement on his original 2009 movie, starring escort-turned-actress Sasha Grey as a Manhattan call girl. This time Riley Keough ("Mad Max: Fury Road") plays Christine Reade, a second-year student at Chicago-Burnham Law School who starts an internship at posh law firm Kirkland & Allen. But she is distracted by a brave new world: transactional relationships. She becomes a "Gfe" who provides “The Girlfriend Experience” for a high price, attracted by the rush of control and intimacy. Starz earned some cultural relevance by bringing Sam Raimi's Ash vs. Evil Dead to life, and now the network is in business with another auteur filmmaker. Steven Soderbergh is turning his 2009 film The Girlfriend Experience (which starred adult film star Sasha Grey) into a Starz TV show, and since he's busy with his own Cinemax show The Knick, he's executive producing this one and handing most of the creative control to indie filmmakers Amy Seimetz and Lodge Kerrigan.
The show stars Riley Keough and dives into the secret world of women who provide high-cost GFEs (Girlfriend Experiences). It's set to debut on Starz sometime next year, and this new trailer does a pretty good job of setting the vibe of what we can expect. Check it out below and let us know what you think.

Steven Soderbergh has always been clear that his retirement from directing features was not going to be a complete withdrawal from filmmaking altogether. Now, the man behind The Knick is back with The Girlfriend Experience, a new Starz show that that finds him revisiting a subject he first explored in his 2009 feature of the same name.
The first teaser trailer for the series, released Wednesday, plunges back into the gilded world of high-end escorts, where "The Girlfriend Experience" describes any service in which a client books a woman for an extended period of time.
