This post contains spoilers for the book "Dune: Messiah."
The adaptation of "Dune: Messiah" has already been approved, but we've long wondered just how the hell director Denis Villeneuve is going to pull it off. Not only is there a 12-year time jump, and not only are major characters like Jessica unceremoniously dropped from the narrative, but the book also features a lot of political feuding that will probably have to be cut for the movie to feel even vaguely comprehensible.
For screenwriter Jon Spaihts, however, there are plenty of reasons to stay optimistic. The big one is that "Dune: Part 2" has already made a ton of changes to the narrative to make a better transition into "Messiah," and he thinks those changes are going to pay off big time going forward. As he explained in a recent interview with Mashable:
"I think [author] Frank Herbert came away from...

If the $579 million at the box office and 93% Rotten Tomatoes score weren’t enough, Quebecois director Denis Villeneuve got one of the greatest boosts one can receive in his field. None other than Steven Spielberg, who knows a thing or two about science fiction, interviewed the “Dune: Part Two” director for the DGA’s “Director’s Cut” podcast, and told him “you have made one of the most brilliant science fiction films I’ve ever seen.”
The creator of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” continued by extolling Villeneuve’s “world-building” prowess, by placing him on a Mount Olympus with several other greats. “Starting with [Georges] Méliès and Disney and Kubrick, George Lucas. Ray Harryhausen, I include in that list. Fellini built his own worlds. Tim Burton. Obviously Wes Anderson, Peter Jackson, James Cameron, Christopher Nolan, Ridley Scott, Guillermo del Toro. "Dune: Part Two" spoilers follow.
In Frank Herbert's 1965 novel "Dune," the main character Paul Atreides, and his mother Jessica, flee into the deserts of Arrakis to escape a successful attack on their home by the murderous House Harkonnen. They fall in with the Fremen, the nomadic natives of Arrakis, and Paul will grow to become their leader. Thanks to some manipulation from Jessica, Paul will also come to be considered the Fremen Messiah. When they first fled, Jessica was pregnant. In her years with the Fremen, Jessica will give birth to a girl named Alia. She will grow to be a toddler with eerie powers, granted to her by the Water of Life, a semi-poisonous worm excretion that Jessica drank while pregnant.
In David Lynch's 1984 film adaptation of "Dune," Alia is played by a young Alicia Witt and voiced by an adult actress. In the 2000 miniseries adaptation of "Dune,...

Here be Spoilers. Dune: Part Two is now playing in theaters, and while the sequel is being celebrated as a fantastic adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel, director Denis Villeneuve and co-writer Jon Spaihts did make a few changes, most notably with the character played by Anya Taylor-Joy.
Related Dune: Part Two: How does Paul Atreides get off the sandworm?
Anya Taylor-Joy plays Alia, the younger sister of Paul Atreides. While the character spends much of the movie as an unborn fetus, she is seen as an adult in Paul’s visions. In Frank Herbert’s novel, Alia is a young toddler during the events covered in the sequel, as there’s a two-year time jump in the middle of the story. Jon Spaihts explained to Inverse why they didn’t go this route. “We were a little leery of that talking toddler, as a distraction in the middle of the film,...

What Do We Know About Dune Prophecy? More than you may think. With the second part of Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic science fiction novel a critical and box office success, it is going to be several years before we see the next feature film in the series, Dune Messiah. Luckily, production on the small-screen prequel /spin-off was concurrent with Dune: Part Two which means before the end of the year we are going to return to the fictional realms of Arrakis, Geidi Prime, and more via Max.
While not much in the way of footage has made its way online, there have been quite a few reveals about Dune Prophecy, so let’s jump in and discuss.
Denis Villeneuve is not directing any episodes

Dune 2 has been a revelation, with critics and fans alike raving about Denis Villeneuve’s vision for Frank Herbert’s novel. The second part of the intended trilogy is a visual masterpiece, no doubt, but is no way lacking in terms of storytelling either. Villeneuve and Jon Spaihts wrote a wonderful screenplay for the movie based on the epic that is Dune, but what many fans might have noticed with after both films, is that it does not follow the novel to the T.
Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides in Dune: Part Two
Skipping out on many major plot points – like the Mentats and the Spacing Guild, the director’s main focus has been on Paul’s story in Arrakis as well as the Bene Gesserit’s influenece throughout the Imperium. He has also given way more agency to the character of Chani than what she had in the novels.

Last week saw the global launch of Denis Villeneuve’s second “Dune” film, wrapping up the conclusion of the first novel adaptation while also leaving everything on a cliffhanger for a third movie that the filmmaker is co-writing with franchise screenwriter Jon Spaihts. Strong critical responses and audience word of mouth have paid off big time for the film as it has made some history over the weekend, becoming the biggest opening for the director and overperforming compared to the first part that was released back in September 2021.

The film industry is no stranger to massive budgets. Blockbusters like Avengers: Endgame and Jurassic World have made it abundantly clear that spending hundreds of millions of dollars on a single movie is often regarded as the norm. Nevertheless, Denis Villeneuve’s latest flick, Dune 2, is shaking things up by proving that it’s possible to create masterpieces with a massive budget (on a $190 m budget).
The film, despite having strong female characters, has established itself as a box office winner. Contrary to popular belief, that the importance of female characters leads to the downfall of a movie, Dune 2 has proved itself to be an engaging cinematic masterpiece.

When Denis Villeneuve adapted Frank Herbert’s novel into Dune and Dune: Part Two, he made significant changes to the source material. Fans of the book may be a little upset with the director, but they appear to be in the minority as the film received rave reviews from critics and audiences. Villeneuve’s approach is very similar to Peter Jackson’s when the latter adapted J.R.R. Tolkien’s dense books of The Lord of the Rings into a condensed three-part film.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two is receiving an overwhelming response from critics and audiences. Villeneuve and Jon Spaihts took months to complete the screenplay of the film, despite it being an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel. The director changed several aspects of the novel to make a film that was unlike any versions fans got to see on visual media. It also meant that Villeneuve’s film was miles apart from David Lynch’s version and he has an explanation for it.

Who’s ready for a Sandworm ride? The long-awaited (and delayed) sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is getting spicy in theaters, and we want to know what you think about the film! Anticipation for Dune: Part Two has been through the roof since last year, and then the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes hit Hollywood. Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. Film Group agreed to delay the film until 2024, knowing that a robust promotional campaign for the science-fiction epic would serve the project (and the box office) well.
The delay is paying off as Dune: Part Two already took $12 million home from preview screenings. The film debuted in 4,500 locations, with Imax screenings bringing in 38% of the pot. I’ve got tickets for an 11:30 screening at my local theater tomorrow, joining the crowds already rushing to theaters to experience one of 2024’s most anticipated features. Superbly acted and beautiful to look at, Dune: Part Two is 2024’s first truly great multiplex film from director Denis Villeneuve. Here’s our review:
There’s the old saying that by trying to please everybody, you end up pleasing no one. To his credit, director Denis Villeneuve has somehow managed to forge a path through mainstream filmmaking without sacrificing the understated, arthouse sensibility that has marked out his work since the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Dune: Part Two, like its 2021 opening chapter, may be a space fantasy shot on an IMAX scale, but it’s also every bit as personal, human and intimate as Villeneuve’s earlier, more raw films like Polytechnique (2009) or Incendies (2010). It also might be the most darkly enthralling $190m-plus sci-fi film ever made.
Ahead of Dune: Part Two’s release, there have been some suggestions that it’s possible to watch this film without having seen the first.

At 28, Timothée Chalamet is five years older than he was when he shot Denis Villeneuve’s first iteration of “Dune” (2021), adapted by Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts from Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi saga, which Villeneuve had adored since his early teens and had the sense to split into two parts. That film ran 155 minutes and cost $165 million against a pandemic global gross of $404 million, controversially released day and date by Warner Bros. in theaters and on HBO Max. It scored 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and won six craft categories.

This time, with “Dune: Part Two,” he has the chance to smash a global blockbuster. Director Denis Villeneuve faced many dilemmas when crafting the finale of his two-part Dune adaptation. Frank Herbert’s narrative is sprawling, and the climactic confrontation between Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and the forces of the Emperor (Christopher Walken) was full of landmines in terms of excessive exposition and outdated sensibilities. In fact, as last lines of a famous book go, we’re not sure if “we who carry the name of concubine—history will call us wives” would have flown for modern audiences buying tickets to this weekend’s Dune: Part Two. So it is not a spoiler to tell you Villeneuve did not include that bit of dialogue in his movie.
“No,” the director agrees when we bring up that problematic sign-off, which shifts some of the story’s strongest characters back into traditional female roles. “It’s a book...

Revenge, love, spice, and a prophecy are at the core of filmmaker Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, a continuation of the science fiction epic. The sequel picks up only hours after Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) killed Jamis, a Fremen, in a one-on-one battle and won the respect and acceptance of Fremen leader Stilgar (Javier Bardem) and Chani (Zendaya), a clever warrior.
After traversing a significant portion of the Arrakis desert, they arrive at the Fremen’s main camp. The tribe selects Paul’s mother, Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), to become the new Reverend Mother, and both she and Stilgar constantly stoke the belief that Paul is “the one,” the messiah described in the prophecy.
Meanwhile, Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgard), who had Paul’s father assassinated with the Emperor’s (Christopher Walken) blessing, is now in...

Denis Villeneuve movies offer some of the most compelling visuals you'll see in modern filmmaking. "Blade Runner 2049," for instance, somehow managed to evoke the immersive atmosphere and tone of Ridley Scott's original movie while making everything feel larger and even more hauntingly dystopian. Of course, it helps when you work with cinematographers of Roger Deakins' caliber, or production designers such as Patrice Vermette, who won an Oscar for his work on Villeneuve's "Dune." But there's no doubt that, even without his esteemed cohorts, Villeneuve has a unique talent for crafting memorable and evocative visuals.
In fact, the visuals are much more important to Villeneuve than pretty much anything else. Prior to "Dune" the director hadn't written one of his own films since breaking into Hollywood with 2013's "Prisoners." Even "Dune" and its sequel "Dune: Part Two" were co-written with Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth. All of which...

Denis Villeneuve is on one heck of a winning streak these days -- a "heater," as the kids might say. The director behind jaw-dropping films like "Enemy" and "Sicario" followed up his early success by turning himself into a household name, first making 2016's "Arrival" into an Academy Awards darling before unleashing "Blade Runner 2049" on the masses. Now, the filmmaker who once made a feature-length thriller about Hugh Jackman punching Paul Dano into a pulp has graduated to the blockbuster big leagues. With 2021's "Dune," Villeneuve and co-writers Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth took a classic sci-fi novel long considered to be "unadaptable" and somehow delivered a crowd-pleasing hit, one that has had audiences hungry for the sequel ever since.

The follow-up to 2021’s Dune: Part One, director Denis Villeneuve’s new film Dune: Part Two, continues the hero’s journey of Paul Atreides as he sets out to exact revenge on those who brought his family to ruin. What is remarkable though is that, not only is part two of the series even more compelling and beautiful than the first installment, but it also succeeds in making a forthcoming third film in the series – adapted from the book Dune Messiah (1969) by Frank Herbert – less daunting and more of a must-see event than it might have been otherwise (especially since the series was originally intended to last only two films before the first was released).
This installment continues immediately after the events of the first film. Paul (Timothée Chalamet) and his mother (Rebecca Ferguson) are now in hiding with the Fremen. Now, plotting revenge against those who left his family in ruins,...

From uncertainties about the saga’s eventual success – which in retrospect makes us all wonder how studio executives thought this could ever flop at the box office – to the numerous changes in its release date, Dune: Part Two took its time to reach audiences all over the world… but here we are, with one of the most anticipated sequels of the century finally landing on the big screens. As an avid fan of sci-fi/fantasy epics, of Denis Villeneuve – my favorite contemporary filmmaker – and, of course, his first film from 2021, my expectations could not have been set any higher.
Dune: Part Two continues the story of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) who now joins forces with Chani (Zendaya) and the Fremen to avenge the conspiracy that destroyed his family. Faced with a choice between love and the fate of the universe, Paul must fight to avoid the terrible future only he can foresee.

Denis Villeneuve’s monumental adaptation expands its extraordinary world of shimmering strangeness. It’s impossible to imagine anyone doing it better
The second part of Denis Villeneuve’s monumental Dune adaptation lands with a sternum-juddering crash; it’s another shroom of a film, an epic sci-fi hallucination whose images speak of fascism and imperialism, of guerrilla resistance and romance. Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel – working with co-writer Jon Spaihts – draws on David Lean, George Lucas and Ridley Scott’s Gladiator in the (perhaps inevitable) mega-stadium combat scene with the tiny billions of CGI crowds in the bleachers. But he really has made it all his own: secular political cruelty meets Indigenous people’s struggle in those vast mysterious planetscapes. The sound design throbs and drones in this film’s bloodstream, lending a queasy frisson to its extraordinary visual spectacle and the recurrent horror-fetish Bdsm chic which appears...

In one of the most arresting sequences in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, the Fremen fighter Chani (Zendaya) teaches the Atreides Duke Paul (Timothée Chalamet) the correct way to sandwalk.
They drag their feet delicately across the arid Arrakis terrain, avoiding the rhythmic pattern that attracts desert sandworms. There’s an understated sweetness to their interactions, a sign of the pair’s growing intimacy. At one point Paul insists on the methods he learned from an anthropological video, and Chani responds with a skeptical and exasperated look. Fremen rituals can’t be fully understood from studying outside texts; the traditions are passed down through generations and exchanged by members of the historically nomadic group.
Fremen society and Paul’s relationship with Chani are among the threads that get more robust consideration in Villeneuve’s highly anticipated sequel. Dune: Part Two maintains the grandiose visual style introduced in Dune while...

On Earth, human beings have evolved to enjoy a fairly comfortable place in the food chain. You have to venture far from other people to risk being eaten by an apex predator — by straying from the path on safari, say, or swimming in dark, shark-infested waters. By contrast, no one takes his safety for granted on Dune, the spice-rich desert outpost of Frank Herbert’s early-’60s pulp serial, where surface-dwellers live in fear of giant sandworms that slither at great speed to gobble anything remotely edible up above.
Director Denis Villeneuve teased these monsters in his awe-inspiring if relatively episodic 2021 adaptation of “Dune.” As science fiction goes, the film rewrote the rules, leading with revolutionary visuals and its equally striking sound design, to the extent that those elements took precedence over the plot: an interplanetary battle for the galaxy’s rarest resource. Mind-blowing as it all felt, we hardly glimpsed the subterranean terrors: Twice,...

The biggest gotcha of 2021’s Dune—a movie full of spectacle and visual wonder—was that it was not a complete story. Most audience members were surprised by the ending, which set up a continuation of the story.

We are just a few weeks away from the release of Dune: Part Two. It’s a Denis Villeneuve directorial that stars Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Florence Pugh, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Lea Seydoux, Dave Bautista, Austin Butler, and Stellan Skarsgard. The trailer and promos of Dune: Part Two have stirred enough curiosity among the audience to see what Timothee’s character, Paul Atreides, will do to avenge what happened to his family. We all know the second film will end on a cliffhanger, naturally making way for the third Dune film. Dune 3 will be based on Herbert’s sequel to his first book, Dune Messiah. Dune: Part Two, the second half of director Denis Villeneuve’s two-part adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel Dune, is now scheduled to be released on March 1st – but there are five more Herbert Dune novels that could serve as the basis for future films, and Villeneuve and his Dune stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya have all expressed interest in continuing the franchise. In an interview with Total Film magazine, Villeneuve said the ending of Dune: Part Two will set up the events of a third Dune film… if they get the chance to make it. He told Total Film, “All of the elements are there. But I think the movie adaptation is more tragic than the book. The way that Part Two ends… it would create a total balance and equilibrium to finish Paul’s storyline in what we could say in Part Three.“
Chalamet told Total Film, “The idea excites me very much.

This article contains light spoilers for Dune: Part Two.
Even the biggest fan of David Lynch‘s original Dune movie from 1984 has to admit the (unintentional?) comedy that occurs when Chani (Sean Young) pleads for Paul Atreides (Kyle MacLachlan) to “tell me of your homeworld, Usul.” In the very next scene, the two are in the throes of passion, suggesting that “tell me of your homewold, Usul” is a pick-up line with the power of the Voice.
Believe it or not, the name “Usul” is not some Lynchian term like “Garmonbozia,” something he made up during transcendental meditation. Rather it comes directly from the Frank Herbert book he adapts. Similar to “Muad’Dib,” Usul is a name that the Fremen give to Paul, this one meaning “the strength of the base of the pillar.” But whereas Muad’Dib refers to Paul’s relationship within his Sietch (as well as desert mice!

For his first movie in the franchise since the original Alien, Scott had little interest in more xenomorphs or any of the deep-space thrills of his previous installment. Instead, Prometheus explored the relationship between God and humanity, using metaphors of the created fighting the creators or children killing parents.
In a way, writer Noah Hawley is continuing those themes for his Alien television series. The still-untitled show...
