The South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference and Festival has announced the highly anticipated features in its Midnighters section, as well as the complete short films lineup, which will debut at this year’s Festival from March 9-17, 2012 in Austin, Texas.
The eleven films announced in the 2012 Midnighters program include a feast of titles that promise to rouse, haunt, and thrill the eager SXSW late-night audiences with an eclectic mix of thrills from genre filmmakers at the top of their game.
“Though our regular program already includes a healthy sampling of genre fare, the Midnighters section highlights those that go a bit crazier, gorier, and all-around balls out-ier,” said SXSW Senior Programmer and Operations Manager Jarod Neece. “This year's program includes both veteran names with anticipated follow-ups and fresh discoveries with new voices and charts otherworldly, insane territories that breathe new life into horror conventions.”

Drew Goddard's The Cabin in the Woods is finally getting the premiere it deserves. The long-delayed horror film is set to premiere at the SXSW Film Festival from March 9-18 this year.
What is even better is that Joss Whedon, who co-wrote and produced the film, will be in attendance for a Q&A panel. Chris Hemsworth, Richard Jenkins, and Bradley Whitford lead this horror film. I will hopefully be in attendance this year on behalf of GeekTyrant and am looking forward to seeing this and many other great films.

The insane buzz swirling around The Cabin in the Woods — along with the actual film’s general content — makes it the perfect title to open this year’s South by Southwest. And that’s what the people running the festival have figured, as a press release (via /Film) announces that the Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon horror deconstruction will start things off in Austin this March.
Along with some information on the film (which you’ve probably heard over and over at this point), said press release also told of premieres for Kevin Macdonald‘s newest documentary, Marley, as well as Lena Dunham‘s HBO pilot, Girls. But this is only the tip of the iceberg for a festival that presents bizarre, entertaining, sometimes offensive material with the ability to leave a lasting mark in their respective genres. I can’t wait to hear more about those offerings — but, in the meantime,...

The 2012 South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference and Festival runs March 9–17, and they've just announced the world premiere of Lionsgate’s The Cabin in the Woods as the Opening Night Film. In addition to premiering the film, producer/co-writer Joss Whedon will participate in a key Conversation panel at the SXSW Film Conference on Saturday, March 10.
The Cabin in the Woods marks Emmy®-nominated writer Drew Goddard’s (Cloverfield, "Lost", "Alias") first foray into directing. This mind-blowing horror film starts, typically enough, as we join five young adults embarking on a weekend of debauchery at an abandoned cabin in the woods. But as layer after layer of the film’s truly kaleidoscopic world is revealed, everything we know about horror is deconstructed and everything we love is reconstructed before our eyes. The film stars Kristen Connolly, Fran Kranz, Anna Hutchison, Chris Hemsworth, Jesse Williams, Richard Jenkins, and Bradley Whitford and...

Australians have been lapping up a homegrown film adaptation of Louis de Bernières's dog tale. But, like Muriel's Wedding, can Red Dog succeed abroad?
"Love, and a bit with a dog. That's what they want." That, in Shakespeare in Love's eyes, was the infallible formula for popular success, as Australia has recently been finding out. A kelpie/cattle-dog cross has made big eyes at everyone and become the star of 2011's homegrown box-office sensation, Red Dog. Based on the Louis de Bernières novella and chronicling the real-life travels of a much-loved pooch through western Australia's Pilbara region in the 1970s, the film opened strongly on 11 August and continued building an audience on successive weekends. A four-legged fable has become a four-quadrant phenomenon: at the time of writing, it's taken A$13.7m ($14.4m), and was on the scent of the top 10 highest-grossing Australian films ever.

Trying something new here on Tubefilter. There are just so many web series related tid bits out there worth mentioning—including a heap in our News Desk email inbox that are worth a click. College Humor staffers are moving crosstown to parent company Iac's offices, out of the unsupervised Union Square office sanctuary that birthed many of the Ch crew's original series like Hardly Working and The CollegeHumor Show. And co-founder Ricky Van Veen is taking a more grown up post as CEO of Barry Diller's new web production arm Notational. He's also hired Vogue Editor Anna Wintour's strapping daughter Bee Shaffer as his assistant. Can you say cameo? [Business Insider] Bite Me TV, The Man Cooking Show launched its second season with host Josh Landis today, cooking recipes aimed at impressing a date in an edgy, guy-friendly way. Other series out of the unabashedly male site are Field Trippin' and Drink n' Play.

Rosie would be proud. Jake Wilson and his post grad colleagues from University of Michigan-Ann Arbor have belted out two seasons of clever story telling with exceptional musical numbers that tap dance straight into the heart of theater lovers. The Battery’s Down, an original online comedy series created by Wilson, has managed to come out on top with its impressive cameo collection and choreography. The show introduces amateur actor, Jake Wilson, living in New York City, doing whatever it takes to land a gig on Broadway. Like so many other web series, the show is shot like The Office, with a hybrid blend of improvisation and scripted content that serves as a backdrop for the musical showcase. Think Joss Whedon’s “Once More with Feeling” from Buffy the Vampire Slayer but without the vampires or demons (and without Whedon’s genius dialogue). In this coming of age tale, the...
