Brosnan to … Bolt? Frank Mannion’s follow-up documentary to Quintessentially British presents a grab bag of interviews – some with distinctly un-Irish personalities
It features a definition of “the craic” but, frustratingly, this long, meandering documentary about Irishness contains only very small quantities of actual fun. It’s a follow-up from film-maker Frank Mannion to his 2022 doc Quintessentially British, but feels like a commission from Aer Lingus: something to watch inflight from Boston to Dublin, soothingly bland, relaxingly dull. Though to be fair, Mannion gets a big laugh when he archly asks a business expert: “What is it that brings international business to Ireland. The weather?”
The film is a series of interviews that contain, bizarrely, one or two with people in possession of very famous names but next to no connection to Ireland. Like Usain Bolt, who’s never set foot on Irish soil, but is fond of a...

The picturesque animation of Jacob and Wilhelm seeing their little sister play with dolls marks the beginning of a classic folktale based on siblings. In this variation, Hansel and Gretel are students at a school, and the witch doesn’t want to eat them and turns out to be a good woman. Nonetheless, she still offers them her confections, so that should be enough information for you before I jump in to discuss the third episode of The Grimm Variations.
Spoiler Alert
How do Hansel and Gretel come across the witch?
Hansel and Gretel live and study in a private school run by a couple whom the kids address as Papa and Mama. The couple seems to take good care of the kids while also instilling manners and discipline in them at the same time. The kids have a set routine, which includes waking up, going to the cafeteria for breakfast,...

Ted Lasso went out on a high note at Apple TV+.
According to Nielsen, the series was the most-watched streaming original last year, despite the fact that Apple TV+ has the fewest subscribers among the streamers that saw their content ranked in Nielsen’s streaming Top 10.
Apple’s small footprint didn’t keep the Jason Sudeikis-fronted series from putting up 16.9B minutes across all 24 episodes in 2023. That’s 2.5B more than second place, which went to Netflix’s The Night Agent. In fact, Netflix claimed most of the ten most-streamed originals last year, only giving away two more spots — one to Prime Video for Jack Ryan and another to Disney+ for The Mandalorian.
Ted Lasso snuck to No. 1 with consistently strong, though not eye-catching weekly totals, only ever surpassing 1B minutes once, after the Season 3 finale debuted.

“Please leave the grid,” the voice on the loudspeaker announced over and over again to the thick crowd that gathered at the starting lines for the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix on Nov. 18. It was moments before the 10 p.m. Saturday evening debut of the 3.8 mile, 210 mph race that wound through the streets of Las Vegas, and famous onlookers were everywhere around the track. Tom Hiddleston Says ‘Loki’ Season 2 Finale Is the ‘Conclusion’ to His 14-Year Marvel Journey (Video)
Following the show’s Season 2 finale, “Loki” star Tom Hiddleston appeared on “The Tonight Show” and told Jimmy Fallon that the episode marked the end of his 14-year journey with Marvel.
Fallon had Hiddleston on as his first actor guest who could talk about one of his big projects following the SAG-AFTRA strike ending.
Hiddleston was careful not to reveal too much, telling Fallon, “If you haven’t seen it, I will not spoil it for you, but I will say this: It all comes full circle.”
“It’s the conclusion to Season 2 … It’s also the conclusion to six films, and 12 episodes, and 14 years of my life,” Hiddleston said.
Hiddleston noted that he was 29 when he was first cast as the villain, eventually turned antihero if not hero — he’s now 42.
“It’s been a journey,” Hiddleston said. “I do think, in the finale, there are echoes and...

The unmistakable 30 Rock theme song is getting new life for charity.
Creator and star Tina Fey and her husband Jeff Richmond, a key member of the creative team who composed the music and directed multiple episodes, are teaming with nonprofit art studio Soundwaves Art Foundation as a fundraiser for the SAG-AFTRA Foundation. The duo autographed a limited edition set of canvases created from the actual sound waves of Richmond’s theme song.
Artist and Soundwaves founder Tim Wakefield created the pieces by running the song through a multimedia art process using layered snippets from the resulting sound wave images. He then collaborated with Fey and Richmond to color and distort the design into the final images.
The artwork is made by artist Tim Wakefield, founder of Soundwaves Art Foundation
The couple put their autographs on a limited edition of 100 prints and four one-of-a-kind original artworks from their home in Manhattan.

Budapest, Aug 26 (Ians) Both Yulimar Rojas and Haruka Kitaguchi triumphed at the World Athletics Championships with their final attempts while Noah Lyles added the 200m title to his 100m crown. Yulimar Rojas, the world record holder and Olympic champion in the women’s triple jump, was far from her best form as she was eighth in 14.33m with only one jump to go, reports Xinhua.
But the 27-year-old Venezuelan only needed one opportunity to leave everyone behind. A final jump of 15.08m enabled her to win the world title four times in a row, as Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk of Ukraine and Cuban Leyanis Perez Hernanedez followed behind in 15.00m and 14.96m respectively.
“It was very difficult. The fact that I won the competition with my last attempt makes it very special and memorable,” said Rojas. “This is my seventh world championship gold in a row (outdoors and indoors), but this is...

A version of this story about “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy/Variety/Reality/Nonfiction issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
When the Television Academy shuffled the variety categories this year, it moved “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” from the variety talk category, where it had won seven years in a row, to the new scripted variety category where it would be facing off against another juggernaut in “Saturday Night Live,” the most nominated and winningest show in Emmy history.
But for “Last Week Tonight” director Paul Pennolino, the move was nothing new: In the Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series, he’d been going up against (and losing to) “SNL” director Don Roy King, an idol of his, for years.
“I knew I was racing against Usain Bolt,” he said with a laugh. “There was no way I was going to win,...

The evening of April 12 was quite the wild ride on social media, as Liam Payne and Tommy Fury both added posters of them facing off on their Instagram feeds. The mock-up design looked very similar to posters publicising big boxing fights, as the profile of the One Direction singer faced the former "Love Island" star with the words "Old Trafford" and "This Summer" between them.
Naturally, the internet went into a meltdown, assuming a huge celebrity boxing match was in the cards. The idea wasn't beyond the realm of possibility either, considering Fury recently beat US YouTuber Jake Paul in the ring just days after he became a dad – he even dedicated his win to baby Bambi and girlfriend, Molly-Mae. But fans weren't impressed with Payne's career change.

The rise of digital currency or cryptocurrency has shaken up the financial world. It has introduced a new way of transferring and storing value that is decentralised, transparent, and secure. The use of blockchain technology to create digital currency has paved the way for a revolution that is transforming the way we do business.
Cryptocurrencies are becoming increasingly popular, and their potential to shape the future of finance is enormous. Digital currencies are decentralised, which means that they are not controlled by any government or financial institution. This makes them more transparent and secure than traditional currencies. Moreover, cryptocurrencies allow for fast and cheap transactions, making them ideal for international payments. The blockchain technology that underpins cryptocurrencies is tamper-proof, which means that transactions are irreversible and cannot be altered, making them more secure than traditional payment methods.
In this article, we will focus on three of the most popular cryptocurrencies:...

As the International Olympic Committee (Ioc) attempts to embrace esports, it is struggling to understand what makes gaming competitions compelling. The governing body in charge of the Olympics is hosting an Olympic Esports Series in 2023, but the titles featured at the event will be quite different from League of Legends or Valorant.
The Ioc announced the upcoming Esports Series on March 1. There will be nine games on display, and most of them are tied to sports that are part of the Summer Olympics. The full list of competitions is as follows: Archery, Baseball, Chess, Cycling, Dance, Motorsport, Sailing, Taekwondo, and Tennis.
With the exception of chess, none of the included esports have thriving competitive scenes. You won’t find a lot of Twitch streamers playing Wbsc eBASEBALL: Power Pros, which will be the game of choice for the Esports Series’ baseball event. The absence of high-profile esports in the Ioc...

The phrase "Hand of God" made famous by Diego Maradona, in what is termed in a very loose way, somehow always seems to find itself blessing the legends of the sport. Messi, the champion footballer, was the one to receive it when most required at this World Cup. Argentina was one of the favourite sides not only because of the way they play the game of football but also because one wished Messi to win it for his immense contribution to the sport.
They did so in splendid style and richly deserved it.
Argentina’s success was a good example of the uncertainty that sports bring to the table. The football world was shocked when they lost their opening match of the World Cup to Saudi Arabia. Argentina, thereafter, needed to win both their matches to qualify. However, the loss put a shadow of doubt on their ability. Champions, they say,...

“I think I’m Kanye mixed with Donny Hathaway,” raps Stormzy on the title track of his third album, This is What I Mean. There’s definitely a touch of the troubled West’s ambitious alchemy to the track, which pirouettes from a pretty piano intro (think child’s ballet rehearsal) into an elating, bass-blast of braggadocio, given dramatic ballast with operatic backing vocals.
But there’s really more of Hathaway to Croydon-born grime star. Not just because of the jazzy warmth with which this album leans into its soulful balladry. It’s there in the rich, stable sincerity of his vocals. Like Hathaway, 29-year-old Michael Owou Jr has a voice that can reach through the darkness and steady your heart. Even if you didn’t know that Stormzy’s the kind of national treasure who invests in scholarship schemes to support Black kids through Cambridge University, his decency feels embedded in his frequency.

When Sheryl Lee Ralph first read Quinta Brunson’s pilot script to “Abbott Elementary,” she knew exactly which character she wanted to play: Ava Coleman, the inappropriate principal who only seems to have her own best interests at heart.
But Brunson had another idea. “She was just short of [saying,] ‘Oh, hell no!’” Ralph says. “She said, ‘We need a queen for Barbara Howard. This record-breaking amount was raised thanks to the generous support of the UK public, ITV and Stv viewers, and the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (Ciff) who matched all public donations up to £6.3 million, meaning double the difference for children. This figure has smashed all previous records for money raised on the night.
The eagerly anticipated match took place once again in Manchester, and this time players took centre stage at the sold out Etihad Stadium with 51,674 fans in attendance, in line with current Covid safety regulations, following last year’s match behind closed doors. The match ended 3-0 to Soccer...

The race is on. Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt exclusively revealed to E! News' Daily Pop co-host Victor Cruz that his daughter Olympia Lightning Bolt just might have what it takes to enter the Olympics herself one day. "She's just one, and she's all over the place," Bolt gushed about his "number one" girl on July 21. "She does her own thing. She tries to run around the house, so we're wondering if she's going to be a runner but we'll see." The EuroCrypt of Christopher Lee
Blu ray – Region Free
Severin Films
1962-72
Starring Christopher Lee, Thorley Walters, Karin Dor
Cinematography by Ernst W. Kalinke, Angelo Baistrocchi
Directed by Terence Fisher, Harald Reinl
While Hammer Studios depended on bosoms and blood to rejuvenate a listless horror industry, their new contract player had some high octane ideas of his own. His name was Christopher Lee and though the hulking actor towered above the crew and co-stars, he proved shockingly agile as the newborn creature in 1957’s The Curse of Frankenstein. No matter how hospitable or well-tailored, his Dracula was a clear and present danger—fleet of foot and supernaturally strong. And in 1959’s The Mummy, he turned the slow-moving immortal into an Olympian killing machine, outpacing his victims like an undead Usain Bolt.
Making the scene just as the sixties were racing into view, Lee’s express lane monsters ignored musty gothic...

Nadav Lapid was used to mining the past. With 2014’s “The Kindergarten Teacher,” he worked childhood poems into the script, while basing his Berlinale winning follow-up, “Synonyms,” on his early days in France after leaving Israel.
But with “Ahed’s Knee,” which premieres on July 7 in competition at Cannes, the filmmaker confronted uncharted terrain: his present day.
“This movie was one trembling gesture of urgency and movement — a kind of ode to the present, to the here and now,” Lapid said. “It took me two-weeks-and-a-half to write the script, whereas ‘Synonyms’ took me over a year. More than any other of my movies, this one is one unbroken gesture; it’s one movement, one brushstroke.”
Lapid poured his professional, political, and personal misgivings into the livewire film, which follows a filmmaker over the course of one day as he struggles with his mother’s imminent death while dealing with government officials hostile to his work.
