As China Girl concludes, the case solved almost as an afterthought, the question burned in my mind is not the ending, which some took as a cliffhanger, in which Robin watches home videos of Mary and looks up at a knock on the door in yet another image that has me 100 percent certain Jane Campion and/or Gerard Lee are…

It’s been a whole presidential term since Jane Campion and Gerard Lee’s first banshee wail echoed off American shores, and I think we can all agree things are going great. On television, at least. “American Horror Story: Cult” (FX, 10 p.m.). From our review:
It’s not hard to see how Ryan Murphy arrived at his premise for “Ahs” Season 7. To say that many Americans have been living out their own personal horror story isn’t an overstatement — not with border closings, hate speech, and potential treason all enabled by the White House — but the new season manages to undermine the left’s legitimate fears and amplify the right’s monstrous traits all in one frenzied mess of an allegory.

Sex and violence are never far away from each other in Top Of The Lake: China Girl. That’s hardly surprising for a murder mystery set in the world of the sex trade, but the two aren’t only connected by Cinnamon’s story.
Episode three opens with a monologue from Tony, who confesses to the accidental mid-sex murder by strangulation of a woman he’s picked up from a brothel. It’s fictitious, probably. Or if it isn’t, the story he tells isn’t about our China Girl. Then there are the sex noises Robin hears from Miranda’s apartment, at first indistinguishable from shrieks of pain. The TV team at See-Saw Films is working on a diverse mix of upcoming projects.
Top Of The Lake has come to define the work of See-Saw’s TV team, in the same way The King’s Speech did for their film division.
The first series of Jane Campion and Gerard Lee’s crime drama was nominated for five Emmys, two Golden Globes (with star Elisabeth Moss winning best miniseries actress) and best drama at the Baftas.
Led by head of television Jamie Laurenson (pictured below, left) and COO, television Hakan Kousetta (below, right), the independent production house pursue prestigious TV projects, often with film directors, and always with “people who have something to say and have a vision”, says Laurenson.

Filmmaker Jane Campion’s cinematic bonafides are unimpeachable: she’s still the only woman to win a Palme d’Or, she’s got one Academy Award under her belt, and she’s already made a seamless transition from deeply personal films to lauded “Peak TV” offerings. And she might not be going back.
In a revealing new interview with The Guardian, Campion is honest about why the small screen is her new favorite home, and why film may no longer have a place for her — or the kind of projects she wants to make.
“The really clever people used to do film,” she told the outlet. “Now, the really clever people do television. I’d been feeling, in the film world, that if you come up with ideas, and you share them, the first concern is: how is the audience going to react?”

Jane Campion’s “Top of the Lake: China Girl” is — among a seemingly infinite array of other things — a story about second chances. And while that theme is beautifully personified by any number of different characters during this six-hour miniseries, there’s a certain irony to the fact that this epic detective drama is built upon a foundation of redemption and regret. After all, Campion got it right the first time.
Premiering at Sundance in 2013 and airing on SundanceTV later that year, “Top of the Lake” was notable for being one of the first examples of a major filmmaker realizing the full potential of the “peak TV” era. It was also notable for being a staggering piece of long-form fiction, the Palme d’Or-winning director of “The Piano” returning to her native land of New Zealand for a violently beautiful mystery show that flipped the genre on its ass with savage grace.

The return of “Top of the Lake” has been a long time coming. The first season aired in the U.S. in March of 2013 and centered around Sydney-based detective Robin Griffith (Elisabeth Moss) who returned home to a remote part of New Zealand to uncover a large crime ring, as well as her own secret past. The series, created by Jane Campion and Gerard Lee, was a beautiful examination of the disturbing underbelly of an atmospheric small town, and thankfully, we have more to look forward to.

American producer Mark Johnson.has landed in Wa and is in the thick of pre-production on the film adaptation of Tim Winton's Breath, to be directed by Simon Baker.
"I've now done three films in Australia - one on the Gold Coast, one in Cairns and one in Melbourne, but I'd never been to Western Australia, and I actually got to know it through the works of Tim Winton", Johnson said..
"Winton describes it with such love and respect and is so protective of the land that I felt like I had already known it"..
The vast majority of the shoot will take place in the coastal town of Denmark, which Johnson is "in awe of", and the producer is already excited about the communal atmosphere.
"I have to say, and it's been a long time since I've experienced this - the entire town is behind this film.

Top of the Lake.
Shooting has begun in Sydney on the second season of Jane Campion's Top of the Lake, with Partisan's Ariel Kleiman stepping in as co-director in place of Lion's Garth Davis, who co-helmed season one.
The second series begins four years after the first, with Elisabeth Moss' Detective Robin Griffin now working in Sydney..
Joining Moss are Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones, Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Ewen Leslie (The Daughter), David Dencik (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, We Are The Best!) and Campion's daughter, Alice Englert, now a director in her own right.
Gerard Lee, of Sweetie and Top of the Lake season one, has again written the scripts with Campion, while it's unclear if DoP Adam Arkapaw, hot off Justin Kurzel's Assasin's Creed, will also return.
.I.m so excited to be back in Australia working with Jane on exploring this wonderful character", Moss said.

The debut season of the 2013 crime drama Top of the Lake was a meditative and often dark look into the disappearance of a pregnant 12-year-old girl. It's a gorgeous show, with stunningly beautiful cinematography of its New Zealand setting and some stellar performances from its lead actors. Thanks to EW, we now know that two of TV's best supporting actresses are uniting for the series' second season. Gwendoline Christie (who plays Brienne of Tarth on Game of Thrones and briefly appeared as the mostly-useless Captain Phasma in Star Wars: The Force Awakens) has signed on to play a major role opposite Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss, who did excellent work in the first season and is returning to reprise her role of detective Robin Griffin. David Dencik (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Alice Englert (Beautiful Creatures), and Ewen Leslie (The Daughter) are all on board for this go-around as well.

Almost twenty years after their success together with "The Portrait of a Lady," actress Nicole Kidman and New Zealand filmmaker Jane Campion are re-teaming for the second season of Campion's crime drama "Top of the Lake".
Details about Kidman's role are under wraps, but it is said to be specifically written for her by Campion. The one clue she offered is that she likes playing "odd people, who live odd lives."
The next season of the series will be shot and set in Sydney. Elisabeth Moss returns as Detective Robin Griffin who is working a new case.
Campion and Gerard Lee will co-write the entire season, and Campion will co-direct though the other helmer has yet to be named. Pre-production begins in December.

Elisabeth Moss will reprise her role as hardened Detective Robin Griffin in a second series of Top of the Lake set in Australia.
The Mad Men star's return will see Griffin investigating a criminal case in Sydney's Harbour City.
The writers of the original six-part series Jane Campion and Gerard Lee will also be returning to write the scripts for the second series.
Oscar-winning filmmaker Campion will helm the project alongside another as-yet-unnamed director.
Former Top of the Lake co-director Garth Davis recently finished directing drama Lion starring Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman, which is based on Saroo Brierley's memoir A Long Way Home.
A sequel was commissioned following the success of the foreboding first series, which followed Griffin's investigation of a missing pregnant 12-year-old in rural New Zealand.
Top of the Lake was co-produced for BBC Two in the UK, Sundance Channel in the Us and BBC UKTV in Australia and New Zealand.

Last year came the exciting news that "Top Of The Lake," Jane Campion's terrific TV series, wouldn't just be a one-off, but would return for a new round of episodes. Details were hazy at the time, but today comes an update that will have our eyes ready for the show's return, hopefully in 2016. If reports that Elisabeth Moss will reprise her role as Detective Robin Griffin, and this time around, she'll be investigating a case in Harbour City, Hong Kong, with the trade also noting the new series will be "set and shot in Sydney." So perhaps the Detective will be bouncing between locales? Jane Campion and Gerard Lee are back to write the scripts, and Campion will go behind the camera to co-direct as well, with another helmer to be named later (Garth Davis co-directed the first season). All around, this is every exciting stuff. Read More: Review...

Sundance Channel’s critically acclaimed miniseries Top of the Lake is returning for a second season. According to Indiewire, the UK and Australian production company See-Saw is developing the new season with creator, director, and writer Jane Campion and co-writer Gerard Lee.
The first season revolved around Elizabeth Moss (Mad Men) playing an Australian detective visiting her rural New Zealand town and investigating the case of a 12 year old pregnant girl. There was also a territorial dispute between the girl’s criminally-enterprising family and a group of outgoing feminists led by Holly Hunter. The tone, the suspense, the moody visuals, and the feminist take on a murder mystery helped the first season garner Moss a Golden Globe win and an Emmy nomination, as well as winning a technical Emmy for best cinematography.
