Mike Schur has become a bit of a go-to voice for those of us who cover TV and are looking for a smart, well-reasoned take on the business. And it’s easy to see why: Not only is Schur thankfully accessible and willing to share his thoughts with those of us in the fourth estate, but he also happens to be one of the most successful small-screen producers in Hollywood.
Schur — who recently sealed a megadeal to remain at his longtime studio home, Universal Television — is behind some of the most-watched comedies in off-net streaming, including “Parks and Recreation,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “The Good Place.” And, of course, he worked under another hugely successful comedy producer, Greg Daniels, on “The Office” (where Schur also played Dwight’s cousin Mose) — believed to be the No. 1 most-binged show on Netflix.

I Feel Bad was the only new comedy to debut on NBC last fall, and judging by the ratings, it hasn't left Nielsen households feeling too great. Now, the network has finally introduced the second new comedy of the 2018-19 television season, the Abby's TV show. Like Cheers before it, does this sitcom have what it takes to recapture the Peacock Network's glory days of "Must See TV" on Thursday nights, or will "last call" come sooner rather than later? Will Abby's be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. *Status update below.

NBC has cut a trio of freshman series.
“Abby’s,” “The Enemy Within” and “The Village” have all been canceled after only a single season on the network.
The former is multicamera comedy which starred Natalie Morales in the title role, as a woman who ran a bar in her backyard. The series, which has only aired seven episodes to date, actually utilized the gimmick of being shot outdoors instead of on a soundstage, the first to do so. Morales was the first-ever female Cuban lead in the format.
The regulars at Abby’s bar, and therefore on the show, included Neil Flynn, Jessica Chaffin, Kimia Behpoornia and Leonard Ouzts. The show came from Josh Malmuth, who was showrunner, and executive producers Michael Schur and David Miner. “Abby’s” was produced by Universal Television, Fremulon, Waila Inc. and 3 Arts Entertainment.

NBC has canceled freshman series “Abby’s,” “The Village,” and “The Enemy Within,” TheWrap has learned.
The trio of shows (two dramas and a comedy) all debuted at midseason and had been the only programs still sitting in limbo at the network, which made most renewal and cancellation decisions ahead of its upfront presentation to advertisers earlier this month — and canceled “A.P. Bio” last week.
Executive produced by Josh Malmuth and Mike Schur, the sitcom “Abby’s” centers on the titular unlicensed bar that Abby (Natalie Morales) runs in her backyard, which “is the perfect gathering place for locals to find camaraderie and sanctuary.”
“Abby’s” is averaging a 0.6 rating in the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic and 2.4 million total viewers, according to the “most current” data from Nielsen, which includes a week’s worth of delayed viewing where available.

NBC has made a decision on its new midseason series, comedy Abby’s and dramas The Village and The Enemy Within. All three have been canceled, joining sophomore midseason comedy, A.P. Bio, which was axed last Friday.
NBC left the future of Abby’s, A.P. Bio, The Enemy Within and The Village undecided heading into its upfront presentation earlier this month.
“The next season’s schedule is fluid, we want to give those shows a chance to fulfill their run and we’ll take another look at them then,” NBC Co-Chairmen George Cheeks said on NBC’s May 12 upfronts call. “Remember we program 52 weeks a year so there are a lot of slots.”
The decision is not surprising as neither series has been a critical or commercial breakout. All are from Universal TV; The Village and The Enemy Within just wrapped their runs; Abby’s has a couple of more episodes.

“Has [insert name of broadcast TV show currently in limbo here] been canceled or renewed?” That’s the question on many viewers’ minds now that upfronts season is over.
While Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS and The CW have all announced their 2019-20 programming schedules, some of those slates don’t reveal everything, meaning the statuses of just under half a dozen broadcast TV shows are still up in the air.
And look, we can accept the fact that not every series will be saved like “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” famously was last season — and not every show should be. But come on, networks — minus ABC, Fox and The CW, who have already axed or renewed everything on their lists — viewers need to hear one way or another whether their favorite programs will be returning this fall, especially for ones that have a crazy-devoted fanbase.
Below are the five shows we’re still awaiting decisions on.

The future of NBC’s Abby’s, A.P. Bio, The Enemy Within and The Village is “still under discussion” but Co-Chairmen George Cheeks and Paul Telegdy refused to hand out formal cancellations to the shows after they did not make NBC’s 2019/2020 schedule.
Speaking on NBC’s press Upfronts call, the pair said that no decision had been made on the shows, although sources suggest that it is unlikely that they will return to the network.
Telegdy said, “Anything that’s still on air is still under discussion, so no cancellations.”
Cheeks added, “The next season’s schedule is fluid, we want to give those shows a chance to fulfill their run and we’ll take another look at them then. Remember we program 52 weeks a year so there are a lot of slots.”

Natalie Morales’ character on the new NBC sitcom “Abby’s” is believed to be the first bisexual lead on a primetime sitcom. But Morales notes that it’s not the character’s defining characteristic.
“It’s one of the many things about her but it doesn’t define our show,” she told Variety‘s “My Favorite Episode” podcast. “I’ve been really lucky in my acting career thus far, my characters have just happened to be Latina, they’re never about that. While we need representation in general in many fields I happen to belong to some of, it does annoy me that a lot of the time when we get representation it’s given to us by people who are trying to fill a category. Natalie Morales is known for scene stealing work on television series such as “The Middleman,” “Parks and Recreation,” “The Grinder” and “Santa Clarita Diet” but now she is stepping into the spotlight as the lead and titular character on new NBC sitcom “Abby’s.”
What does being the lead of a show in today’s television landscape mean to you?
I have this great opportunity that people like me haven’t traditionally had — literally never. I’m the first Cuban female lead of a network sitcom. I don’t take that lightly. But as far as the No. 1 on the call sheet thing, the responsibility I see there is to the people I work with — the crew and the cast. Everybody says the fish rots from the head down, and it’s so true. I’ve been very, very lucky to work on really great shows with really great people...

“Abby’s is filmed in front of a live outdoor audience,” co-star Neil Flynn says at the start of each episode of this charming new NBC comedy about an unlicensed bar run by the title character (Natalie Morales) in her backyard. (It’s shot on the same studio back lot as Wisteria Lane from Desperate Housewives.) The announcement signals the DNA of the series: a hybrid of old-school and new-school sitcom aesthetics.

“Abby’s,” NBC’s new comedy about a cranky bartender (Natalie Morales) and her inner circle of regulars, is aware of the inevitable “Cheers” comparisons.
Created by “New Girl” writer Josh Malmuth and executive produced by uber-producer (and unabashed “Cheers” superfan) Mike Schur, “Abby’s” therefore makes a few key choices in order to differentiate itself as its own entity. The most immediately obvious difference is that “Abby’s” is the first multi-cam sitcom to be filmed outdoors. Taking advantage of Los Angeles’ generally static weather (recent rain deluge aside), the backyard setting creates a more casual, warm vibe. Outside of the quirky characters who fill it — played by capable comedic actors like Neil Flynn, Nelson Franklin, and Jessica Chaffin — the show imbues the bar itself with a personality and living mythology all its own, which makes for an easy way in to weirdo shenanigans.

It’s tape night on the set of “Abby’s,” located behind one of the homes built on the fabled Universal Studios backlot. As the night falls and a chill sweeps in, the NBC comedy’s producers are facing the kinds of obstacles that no other multi-camera sitcom has likely ever confronted. Out come the dewdrops, crickets, helicopters, gnats, and skunks that have made shooting the sitcom a unique challenge.
That’s because “Abby’s,” which premieres Thursday, is the first multi-camera comedy to be shot entirely outdoors — and it’s been a learning process for everyone involved. Take the crickets, which have been much louder than expected. It’s driving the show’s sound engineers bonkers.

NBCUniversal kicked off the Television Critics Association press tour’s winter session with panels including NBC comedies (“Superstore” and “Abby’s”), reality programming, and upcoming dramas. There was not, however, an executive session from new NBC chairmen George Cheeks and Paul Telegdy, who succeeded Bob Greenblatt after he stepped down in September.
Here are five things we learned from Tuesday’s session.

Eighteen months after the allegations against Harvey Weinstein galvanized the #MeToo movement, NBC drama actresses Jennifer Carpenter (“The Enemy Within”), Retta (“Good Girls”), Lorraine Toussaint (“The Village”), and Susan Kelechi Watson (“This Is Us”) said they can feel the impact on set. In particular, they praised the efforts of their male co-stars to better understand what working in Hollywood as a woman is truly like. “Obviously it was serious and becoming more and more obvious that more and more women experience it,...

NBC’s upcoming comedy “Abby’s” takes place in a bar and is centered around the various patrons that visit and commiserate in that bar.
If that sounds like another NBC sitcom, you’re not alone. If you only know Ted Danson as the reformed demon Michael on “The Good Place,” we’re talking about “Cheers,” the famed sitcom that ran on NBC for 11 seasons that also starred Danson.
During the Television Critics Association press tour on Tuesday, the cast and crew of “Abby’s” were asked — multiple times — about being compared to “Cheers,” and they were more than ready to respond to those comparisons.

“It’s a nice comparison, but I think our show is much better,” showrunner Josh Malmuth quipped to TV critics. “We think it will have a much greater cultural impact.

“Is this project an attempt by NBC to fill a decades-long hole in pop culture left by Cheers departure?” was not the first question the cast and creators of Abby’s got asked during their TCA Q&A.
It was the second.
“It’s a nice comparison, but I think our show is much better,” Ep Josh Malmuth joked to TV critics. “Mike [Schur] and I think it will have much greater cultural impact.”
Multi-cam midseason comedy Abby’s is shot in front of a live audience – outdoors, which is a comedy series first. It’s about a makeshift bar in Abby’s backyard, where locals find camaraderie and sanctuary.
“When Josh and I were beginning to plan the show we were acutely aware, no matter what we did, it would be seen through the filter of Cheers,” Schur chimed in, guessing that had they cast the show entirely with 90-year-old female actors,...

NBC has slotted Thursday, March 28, 9:30 Pm for the premiere of its new 10-episode midseason comedy Abby’s, starring Natalie Morales. Abby’s takes the slot currently held by Will & Grace, which will move to 9 Pm on March 28 and April 4 for its final two episodes of the season.
Shot outdoors in front of a live studio audience, a first for a multi-cam comedy, Abby’s centers around an unlicensed, makeshift establishment in Abby’s (Morales) backyard, the perfect gathering place for locals to find camaraderie and sanctuary. To maintain the perfect bar ecosystem, all patrons must abide by a specific set of rules. This includes no cell phones (not even to look something up), understanding that earning a seat at the bar takes time to rise through the hierarchy and knowing that losing a challenge may have some unpleasant and unpalatable drink-related repercussions.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.
This week’s question: What’s the one new fall or midseason broadcast TV show announced at upfronts that you would like to survive?**
**This is a snap judgment based on anything you like — title, pedigree, star, whether you’ve seen the pilot yet or not.
Alan Sepinwall (@sepinwall), Uproxx
Between “Parks and Rec,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “The Good Place,” and “The Office”, Mike Schur is as creatively reliable a name as there is in the comedy business right now. “Abby’s” isn’t one of his creations (it’s from “New Girl” and “Superstore” vet Josh Malmuth), but as we’ve also seen with “Master of None,” Schur has excellent taste in what shows to put his stamp on, and both the premise (a young woman runs an unlicensed bar in her...

“Abby’s”
From the producers of “The Good Place” comes a hilariously aspirational new comedy about the best bar in San Diego, home to good prices, great company and, of course, Abby. This unlicensed, makeshift bar nestled in her backyard is the opposite of everything annoying about today’s party scene. There are rules at Abby’s: no cell phones (not even to “look something up”), earning a seat at the bar takes time and losing a challenge means drinking a limey, sugary “not-beer” drink. As the oddball cast of regulars will tell you, hanging out at Abby’s is a coveted honor. But once you’re in, you’re family.
The cast includes Natalie Morales, Nelson Franklin, Kimia Behpoornia, Jessica Chaffin, Leonard Ouzts and Neil Flynn.
Josh Malmuth will write and executive produce. Pamela Fryman will direct and executive produce the pilot. Michael Schur and David Miner also executive produce.

NBC has ordered the Abby's TV show to series, and Flynn is already a regular in the backyard barroom gut-buster. An NBC sitcom, Abby's stars Natalie Morales in the title role, along with Nelson Franklin, Kimia Behpoornia, Jessica Chaffin, and Leonard Ouzts, as well as Flynn. The Middle star Neil Flynn is on a roll. Two weeks before his ABC family comedy series is set to end its nine-season run on ABC, his NBC pilot Abby’s was ordered up to series.
With the pickup, Flynn is extending his streak of being a series regular on a comedy series to 17 consecutive seasons and counting.
Flynn rose to prominence with his role as the Janitor on NBC’s single-camera medical comedy Scrubs. After a scene-stealing run during the first season, in which he was billed as a recurring guest star, Flynn was promoted to a series regular at the start of Season 2 in 2002 when the streak began. Flynn had been a series regular on Scrubs for seven seasons when he was cast as the male lead opposite Patricia Heaton in the ABC single-camera pilot The Middle. In a potentially ominous sign for NBC’s remaining “bubble” comedies, the Peacock network has ordered a pair of sitcoms — the Amy Poehler Ep’d I Feel Bad and the Cheers-esque Abby’s — to series for the 2018-19 TV season.

“A.P. Bio” — and two new shows — just made the grade at NBC.
The Glenn Howerton-led series has been picked up for a Season 2 by the Peacock, which is also granting series orders to a pair of comedy pilots from executive producers (and network faves) Michael Schur and Amy Poehler.
Hailing from “The Good Place” producers Schur and David Miner and led by star Natalie Morales, NBC describes “Abby’s” as a hilariously aspirational new comedy about the best bar in San Diego, home to good prices, great company and, of course, Abby. This unlicensed, makeshift bar nestled in her backyard as the opposite of everything annoying about today’s party scene.

Along with lead Morales, the cast includes Nelson Franklin, Kimia Behpoornia, Jessica Chaffin, Leonard Ouzts and Neil Flynn.
Schur and Miner are executive produce along with Josh Malmuth, who penned the script for the multi-cam (shot outside in front of a live audience). Pamela Fryman is directing and also executive producing the pilot. “Abby’s” comes from Universal Television, Fremulon and 3 Arts Entertainment.
The Poheler-produced project, “I Feel Bad,” centers around Emet (Sarayu Blue), the perfect mom, boss, wife, friend and daughter. Ok, according to the logline, she’s not perfect. In fact, she’s just figuring it out like the rest of us. Sure, she feels bad when she has a sexy dream about someone other than her husband, or when she pretends not to know her kids when they misbehave in public, or when she uses her staff to help solve personal problems. But that’s Ok, right? Nobody can have it all and do it perfectly. From executive producer Amy Poehler comes a modern comedy about being perfectly Ok with being imperfect.

Aseem Batra will write and executive produce the comedy, with Julie Anne Robinson directing and executive producing the pilot. Poehler, Dave Becky and Josh Maurer also executive produce. The series hails from Universal Television, Paper Kite Productions, CannyLads Productions and 3 Arts Entertainment.
As for newly-renewed “A.P. Bio,” its first season averaged a 1.2 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and 3.7 million total viewers in live-plus-seven-days of delayed viewing data from Nielsen.

New Girl, Season 2, Episode 18: “Tinfinity”
Written by Kim Rosenstock & Josh Malmuth
Directed by Max Winkler
Airs on Tuesdays at 9pm on Fox
New Girl is back on top form this week after last week’s disappointing episode.
This episode focuses on Nick and Schmidt’s friendship as Schmidt throws an extravagant party to celebrate being roommates for ten years. This is a welcome change to all the romance that is dominating the show at the moment; Nick and Jess are great but placing the tension somewhere outside of the loft works better.
Nick and Schmidt are complete opposites and sometimes the audience can’t help but wonder why they are even friends, “Tinfinity” is here to remind us. Hilarity is provided through goofy college flashbacks of the pair as well as the honesty and emotion that are put on display when the best friends share a moment alone. New Girl Episode 13: “A Father’s love”
Written by: Berkley Johnson & Josh Malmuth
Directed by: Jake Kasdan
Original Airdate: 15 January 2012
