- Malmgren is best known as a proponent of the movement work of the Hungarian dancer, Rudolf Laban in whose dance company he had been a member, which he first began teaching in the 1950's. Malmgren's students included actors Sean Connery, Brian Bedford, Anthony Hopkins, Natasha Parry and Patricia Neal; and directors Peter Brook, Michael Blakemore, William Gaskill, Tony Richardson, and Alexander Mackendrick.
- Co-founder with Christopher Fettes of The Drama Centre London, whose students have included Paul Bettany, Russell Brand', Pierce Brosnan, Celia Bannerman, Simon Callow, Oliver Cotton, Michael Fassbender', Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Geraldine James, Helen McCrory, Mark Rolston, Lambert Wilson and Penelope Wilton.
- Although Malmgren never published, he would dictate his work in movement psychology and draw the relevant and detailed diagrams for each of the six states of subconscious states to each class of actors and directors at Drama Centre. He personally conducted the college's movement classes for many years, which served to physicalise the theory presented in his lectures.
