Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

Out of all the animated series ever curated by the DC Animated Universe, perhaps none comes as close to perfection and fans’ hearts as Young Justice. A masterpiece, it ruled the hearts of fans worldwide throughout the time it aired. But despite such success, it had to end its run as unexpectedly as ever, leaving fans from all around the globe absolutely devastated.
DC’s Young Justice.
Previously, the reason behind this sudden cancelation was being widely cited as the huge female fanbase the series attracted. However, as it turns out, those rumors were hardly the case in real life, for the real reason was actually “economics,” as showrunner Greg Weisman himself clarified. And when we share this reason with you, you’ll end up hating Mattel even more than ever before.

Young Justice is an animated series that follows the adventures of several teenage superheroes and sidekicks from the pages of DC Comics. Despite the show’s immense popularity and inventive storytelling, the series was abruptly canceled after its first two seasons.
A still from Young Justice season 4
Moreover, the reason behind the show’s cancellation was truly bizarre as it had nothing to do with the quality or viewership of the show. Instead, the series was canceled because toy makers Mattel did not see the animated property as a viable option for revenue generation. Here is everything you need to know about Young Justice‘s cancellation and its current status.

For the fourth year in a row, the Ambie Awards celebrated the brightest creators in the world of podcasting. On March 26, drag queen Trixie Mattel hosted a lively ceremony that honored the best audio shows across 27 categories.
The Ambies are overseen and voted on by the Podcast Academy, a group that was established just a few months before the inaugural Ambies in 2020. The show has added a handful of new categories since then and has kept pace with a podcasting industry that has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years. “You all look so gorgeous which is why you excel in a medium where no one can see you,” said Mattel, a former Streamy Awards co-host, at the start of the 2024 Ambies.

Barbie was easily the biggest movie of the year; not only generating $1.4 billion worldwide but dominating pop culture discourse for months on end. It was a fitting conclusion for a project that had spent decades in development hell, with Sharon Stone even pitching a Barbie movie way back in the ’90s.
While speaking on Dana Carvey and David Spade’s Fly On The Wall podcast, Sharon Stone spilled a few more details on her failed Barbie pitch. “I went to the studio to try and make Barbie in the 1990s with a producer, a friend of mine, and I had the then-ceo of Mattel on my side,” Stone said. “We got thrown out of the studio. They were like, ‘Why would you take this American icon and try to destroy it? What is wrong with you?’ I got a lecture and an escort to the door.“

Sharon Stone surprised fans in January when she revealed on Instagram that she tried and failed to pitch a “Barbie” movie in the 1990s, decades before Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie would make their own adaptation to the tune of $1.4 billion worldwide (the highest-grossing film of 2023) and eight Academy Award nominations. Stone said she got “laughed out of the studio” back then. She recently dropped some new info about her axed “Barbie” movie while visiting Dana Carvey and David Spade’s “Fly On The Wall” podcast.

Ryan Gosling’s charming presence was one of the eagerly awaited moments of yesterday’s Oscars night. The Hollywood heartthrob took to the stage to perform I’m Just Ken — one of the nominated Barbie song by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt.
Billie Eilish’s What Was I Made For? was another one. Decked out in a sparkly pink suit, a cowboy hat, and pink gloves, Gosling kicked off his performance by serenading his Barbie co-star Margot Robbie.

Robbie couldn’t help but laugh at the playful gesture. Later, the 43-year-old actor took the stage with a group of Ken dancers, including Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatwa, and Scott Evans — all suited up in black.

Greta Gerwig tells me there’s “no resistance” from her about the possibility of Barbie 2.
The challenge for her she says, is how to tackle a follow-up movie. Initially, the filmmaker wasn’t “feeling” the idea of a sequel, but now she’s warm to such a situation. “I’m not dismissing it, I want to do it,” she says, but there’s a heck of a lot to discuss first with Mattel, Margot Robbie, Warner Bros Discovery, producer David Heyman and all of her creative collaborators.

The Oscars of this year are going to be a glorious event like every other year, but what sets it apart from the previous years is the presence of Ken. Ryan Gosling, aka Ken, from last year’s summer blockbuster Barbie will be taking the stage to perform his nominated single and original soundtrack for the movie, I’m Just Ken live at the 96th Academy Awards.

While we certainly cannot wait to witness the spectacle and hear Gosling’s live vocals, a sneak peek of his rehearsal has already been going viral. And fans are exclaiming how much of an iconic event it will be.

The world is filled with ironies and often, these ironies are a part of Hollywood people and films. Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie, and, Ryan Gosling’s Barbie is a prime example of the irony that we are talking about and no, it wasn’t the producers this time.
With a movie based on feminism and a satire on the patriarchy, Mattel executives had a really tough time letting Gerwig take full creative control of the project. As per a movie expert, the toy company tried to delete 3 integral scenes from Barbie including Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken” sequence (which is completely unacceptable).

At the West Hollywood Edition on March 6, where Greta Gerwig was honored as one of Time’s Women of the Year, the record-breaking director spoke to her artistic process and the possibility of a “Barbie” sequel.
“My North Star is ‘What do I deeply love? What do I really care about? Like, ‘What’s the story underneath this story?'” she said. “And I think with ‘Barbie,’ the story underneath this story was I loved Barbie. I remember going to Toys R Us and looking at Barbies and I loved their hair. And I loved everything about them and my mom was not sure about it. And I find that’s the story, that’s the generational story…I’m always trying to find those undertows.”

For Margot Robbie and filmmaker Greta Gerwig, deciding on the final line of Barbie was a battle with some of their partners.

Allan was one of the runaway characters in Barbie. Introduced by Mattel as a bit of a supporting character to a supporting character — he was first labeled as “Ken’s buddy” — Michael Cera’s interpretation of him proved to be a scene stealer. But could Allan be the one most deserving of a Barbie spin-off? Probably not, but there might be an audience for Cera standing around awkwardly for two hours.
Appearing on The Tonight Show, Cera was asked about Allan being the lead in a Barbie follow-up, to which he replied, “I think it would be kind of a weird movie, but I’m there…He’s kind of like an inactive character. As we approach the Oscars, we can finally shut the book on 2023 films, including the massive cultural moment that was the “Barbie” release. But that doesn’t mean “Barbie” will be gone forever. After the triumph of Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar Barbie movie, Mattel recently revealed that its annual “Career of the Year” Barbie collection would showcase Women in Film. Four dolls were announced — studio executive, director, cinematographer and movie star — leading some on social media site X and various other cursed corners of the Internet to point out the essential entertainment jobs that were overlooked.

The Wire creator David Simon wrote: “No key set Pa Barbie who has to go into Movie Star Barbie’s trailer and tell the delicate flower to get the fuck down to set because 120 other pissed-off Barbie’s are waiting for her. That film taught Mattel nothing.

This article contains Barbie spoilers.
The final bit of dialogue in the Barbie screenplay is one of the funniest, as well as most subversive. Over the course of two hours, audiences have watched one of the most beloved (and commercialized) icons of femininity in American pop culture experience a dawning self-awareness about what it truly means to be a woman. And in the final scene of the movie, she becomes one, with the newly relocated Barbie now going by the name “Barbra Handler” in the real world. More important though is she’s seeing a doctor for the first time, and it’s for a specific type of checkup.

This article contains spoilers for Barbie.
When Stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie) initially wakes up in her perfect pink world, Barbieland looks like a genuine utopia. At first glance, everyone seems happy with their place in this matriarchal society. Within Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, Women hold positions of status and power and constantly support each other. There’s no war or conflict (aside from the Kens trying to get Barbie’s attention). But even with all the progress that Barbieland seems to have made as a fictional society, there doesn’t seem to be much room for queerness within this hyper-stylized, feminine world.
Queerness as a concept extends beyond a person’s sexuality. Without getting too deep into queer theory, queerness essentially refers to anything that falls outside of the hegemonic or dominant societal norm. In the real world, this “norm” is the straight, white male. They are the ones who...

Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt couldn’t have guessed their first time scoring a film together would be the biggest movie of the year.
For the duo, working with A-list artists — such as Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga, Dua Lipa, Adele, Lorde and Bruno Mars — is nothing new. And Ronson had even previously scored a film before: 2015’s Mortdecai. But taking on Greta Gerwig’s Barbie? That was a different feat. As Wyatt explains, they’re the type of people to “dive in the pool and learn how to swim later” — and they’re definitely taking laps now.
Not only has the Margot Robbie-led film broken box office records, but Barbie: The Album was a chart-topping and Grammy-nominated hit, which Ronson finds “amazing and totally baffling.” With a lineup of songs including Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night,” Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?”, Ryan Gosling’s “I...

There is an update about the long-awaited live-action Masters of the Universe project.
A live-adaptation based on the blond barbarian, popularized as part of Mattel toys, is in serious talks with Amazon MGM Studios from Adam and Aaron Nee, the writing and directing team behind The Lost City, via Variety.
Conversations are taking place with Amazon after Netflix dropped a planned version of the Nee Brothers film in July.
Keep reading to find out more…
Netflix spent nearly $30 million in development for the project, which was meant to star Kyle Allen. The streamer walked when the budget, originally set for more than $200 million, could not be meaningfully reduced, via Variety.
The Amazon talks are “tenuous, another source cautions,” but if the studio moves forward, it will need to close new deals with the Nees for a script, and to direct.
Kyle is “still in the mix” to star as He-Man.

Kevin Smith’s Netflix animated series Masters of the Universe: Revelation was envisioned as a follow-up to the 1980s show He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, and now Revelation is getting a follow-up of its own. Smith and Netflix are set to bring us the sequel series Masters of the Universe: Revolution sometime in 2024 – and while a specific release date hasn’t been revealed, promotion of the show has started with the unveiling of a clip that shows He-Man going to battle with the villainous Scare Glow! On the heels of the record-breaking performance of “Barbie,” veteran film executive Robbie Brenner has been elevated to president of Mattel Films.
Brenner moves up from her role as executive producer at Mattel, the longstanding toy company that’s spent years switching focus to original content based on its intellectual property under CEO Ynon Kreiz. She’s been in-house since 2018.
“Robbie joined the company five years ago to bring the vision of Mattel Films to life, collaborating with leading filmmakers to make standout quality movies based on our iconic brands that will resonate in culture and appeal to global audiences. She has done exactly that and so much more, positioning Mattel Films as a key partner for innovative creators, world-class talent, award winning producers, and major studios,” Kreiz said on Wednesday.

Netflix’s “Sex Education” is in session for one last season. The Moordale Secondary School crew face a whole new school year at Cavendish College, where most of them have transferred after the shut-down of their previous stomping grounds, run into the ground by Jemima Kirke’s Headmistress Hope Haddon.
While Otis, Eric, Viv, Jackson, Ruby, Aimee, Isaac and more have to navigate a new social scene at Cavendish, Maeve is across the pond in America taking a fancy writing seminar class. Adam Groff (Connor Swindells) has left school completely. Despite what that ol' "sticks and stones" idiom has to say, words have power, and words can absolutely hurt. In an interview with the New York Times, Margot Robbie explained that one little adjective to describe her character in "Barbie" became a bit of a sticking point with the Mattel Corporation, the folks who make the real-life Barbie dolls and served as producers on the film.
Director Greta Gerwig was required to attend Barbie Boot Camp before making the movie, and Robbie explained that she and Gerwig would have six-hour-long conversations with Mattel about what they were afraid would be depicted on screen. "We spent time at Mattel headquarters, we went into their factories, we watched them make a doll and we talked to people who make them," said Robbie. "They knew we were coming from a place of respecting the brand." She noted that Mattel had "a long laundry list of concerns,...

In the entire 95-year history of the Academy Awards, only one woman has been nominated for the Best Director Oscar twice: Jane Campion for “The Piano” (1993 nominee) and “The Power of the Dog” (2021 winner). The other six females to contend for directing are Lina Wertmuller for “Seven Beauties” (1976 nominee), Sofia Coppola for “Lost in Translation” (2003 nominee), Kathryn Bigelow for “The Hurt Locker” (2009 winner), Greta Gerwig for “Lady Bird” (2017 nominee), Chloe Zhao for “Nomadland” (2020 winner) and Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman” (2020 nominee). At the upcoming 2024 Oscars, Campion’s record as the only female to reap two separate director mentions could be matched if “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig earns her second bid.
Campion received her first Best Director nom for “The Piano,” about a mute piano player. The New Zealander lost to Steven Spielberg for “Schindler’s List” but did not go home empty-handed that year, as she won the Best Original Screenplay award.

Provocative Oscar-winning Carey Mulligan films, the British royal family, and Mattel. What do they all have in common? It's not a trick question. The answer is Emerald Fennell, the writer and director of "Promising Young Woman," who also played a young Queen Camilla in "The Crown." Fresh off her small role as (pregnant) Midge in Greta Gerwig's plastic box office sensation "Barbie," Fennell is back behind the camera for "Saltburn," her second feature as a writer and director.

And that’s what’s gonna take everyone by surprise. ‘Oh, you’re going to the Barbie movie? Psych. It’s scary and gory!’ Someone said that to me, and I was like, ‘It’s not, please don’t spread that rumour.’ I don’t want horror fans to be disappointed."Margot hopes people "form an opinion" of 'Barbie' - even if they don't like the movie.

Judging by some of the stories to have come out of the production of Greta Gerwig's "Barbie," the making of the movie was a delight for everyone involved. For instance, /Film recently reported that the cast of the film kicked off filming with a slumber party for all the Barbies. Kens were not invited, although they were welcome to visit briefly, send gifts, or call in to say hello. Not surprisingly, Michael Cera, the actor to play the nondescript non-Ken Allan, was not invited to even say hello. Gerwig also held screenings every Sunday morning -- a kind of "movie church" -- to communicate to her cast what vibe she was seeking. The director even wrote a short prayer to Barbie that she recited to Warner Bros. executives. The film was playful and bubbly because the production was playful and bubbly.

Barbie‘s dream house keeps getting stuffed with cash. The Greta Gerwig-directed Mattel doll adaptation has become the highest grossing Warner Bros. movie in the studio’s 100-year history at the domestic box office with $537.4M, unseating previous champ, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight which made $534.9M back in 2008.
Barbie crossed the half billion mark in U.S. and Canada late last week in her 22nd day of release, beating that of Top Gun: Maverick last year (30 days) and this year’s Super Mario Bros Movie (31 days) to that benchmark. It was another absolutely gigantic weekend for "Barbie." The Warner Bros. adaptation of Mattel's enduring doll directed by Greta Gerwig topped the box office for a third straight weekend, adding another $53 million domestically to its ever-growing total. That was enough to help Barbie and Ken join the coveted $1 billion club, becoming the 53rd movie in history to do so. If the movie never makes another dime, it would be a resounding success beyond anyone's expectations. But the movie is, in fact, going to make many more dimes. So much so that it is looking like it's going to be a tight race between "Barbie" and "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" for the biggest movie of 2023 at the box office.

Mattel is making fans of Kate McKinnon’s Weird Barbie character from Greta Gerwig’s global juggernaut, “Barbie,” a real doll.
The company announced Friday that they are opening preorders for their own take on the Weird Barbie doll. The doll comes complete with crayon markings on her face, like McKinnon has in the movie; a funky haircut and green snakeskin boots. Also like McKinnon’s character, who enjoyed being in splits all the time, Mattel’s version is fully articulated with the ability to pose the doll however you want.
In “Barbie,” Weird Barbie is the outcast of Barbieland. She lives in a wild Dreamhouse of her own and populates her friend group with bizarre discontinued dolls like Sugar Daddy Ken and Magic Earring King. As the Barbies say early in the film, they call her Weird Barbie “behind her back and also to her face.”
Mattel, no surprise,...

Barbie fever is sweeping the nation, and Mattel is seizing every opportunity to cash in on the success of Greta Gerwig’s multi-million dollar earning film! Suppose you’re new to the concept of Gerwig’s latest film. In that case, Barbie revolves around Margot Robbie’s character experiencing an existential crisis in a world overpopulated with different Ken and Barbie personas. In Barbie World, Barbie diplomats, scientists, mermaids, artists, and Supreme Court Justice members rule the beach alongside a multiverse of Kens who love to party. Still, one Barbie is stranger than the rest, Kate McKinnon‘s Weird Barbie. Mattel is aware of the character’s popularity, and now they’re introducing an official Weird Barbie doll inspired by McKinnon’s character.
In the film America Ferrera’s Gloria meets McKinnon’s disfigured Barbie. The character sports a mismatched outfit, a radical hairstyle, and face tattoos in the way of marker scribbles and stickers.

She's Weird Barbie: She can do the splits, has a funky haircut, smells like basement, and now she can be yours! Mattel designer Javier Meabe has taken Kate McKinnon's breakout character from Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" film (read our glowing review here) and immortalized her as an official release as part of the Mattel Creations line. Weird Barbie is, of course, part of the Made to Move collection, which means she'll already be able to do the splits without needing to break her hip joints the way so many of us did as children.
There is a capitalist irony to Mattel making a doll that resembles the nightmarish results of being loved a little too rough, similarly to the way denim companies sell already distressed jeans, but I have no qualms admitting I smashed that pre-order button on Weird Barbie like I was attempting to beat the high striker at a summer carnival.

A scene cut from 'Barbie' would have seen Midge giving birth. The character was introduced by Mattel in 1963 as their flagship doll's best friend and a now-discontinued pregnant version of the doll was played by Emerald Fennell in Greta Gerwig's summer comedy based on the toy franchise.Leaked photos from behind the scenes of the film seen on a corkboard in an 'Art of the Cut' interview with editor Nick Houy have now revealed that there were plans for Midge to give birth in a post-credits joke for the film, alongside Dame Helen Mirren - who appears as the Narrator - as a midwife.Other scenes cut from the fantasy comedy - which sees Barbie discover what it means to be human after leaving Barbie Land - included a "fart opera" but the joke was cut due to a poor reception at a test screening, according to Greta.

We’re looking at cinema through a pair of pink-tinted glasses because Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is everywhere right now. The Margot Robbie-led caper is defying all expectations and looks poised to kickstart a Mattel Cinematic Universe that includes an upcoming Barney movie with Daniel Kaluuya.
This is far from the first Barbie movie we’ve had, but as well as being the first live-action outing, its meta take on the IP is grabbing headlines. With some 64 years of Barbie history to pull from, the script has gotten away with weaving in some of the toy line’s many controversies.
Barbie has faced controversies of its own since its box office-smashing debut, such as an enraged minority of audience members calling out the movie “anti-men” propaganda. While Gerwig’s film continues to enjoy box office success, here are the real-life Barbie doll controversies that...
