Everyone likes everything now. In the years since streaming began to dominate listening habits, this twisted mantra has taken over the music industry, driven more by the desire for some algorithmic utopia than reality. Because everyone has access to everything, the theory goes, they must automatically like it all. It’s a credo at the very core of the mindset of the new look, pop-leaning Reading & Leeds festival. And today, everyone-likes-everything-now (Elen) comes up against its ultimate test.

Jimmy Fallon and Paul Rudd once again teamed up for a return to ’80s video glory, this time recreating Dead or Alive’s “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)” on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” Thursday night (April 25).
The video for the 1985 hit — which reached No. 11 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart –is a shot-by-shot replication, down to the late Pete Burns’ signature eye patch, hip swivels, choreography and bravado. The original clip, directed by Vaughan Arnell and Anthea Benton, was an homage to the Hindu God of Protection, the six-armed Vishnu, re-imagined by Burns amidst images of a disco ball and gold flags. Dead or Alive originally financed the video themselves, Burns had stated in interviews. The song was originally included on the Dead or Alive album, “Youthquake.”

This week in things you didn’t know you desperately needed: Paul Rudd joined Jimmy Fallon in shot-for-shot remake of Dead or Alive’s 1985 music video for classic hit “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record).” The result is nearly identical, including dead-on costumes, hair and eye patches.
In the clip, Rudd, who appeared on The Tonight Show to promote the release of Avengers: Endgame, takes on the role of lead singer Pete Burns. The video is complete with soft focus lighting and a disco ball that reappears throughout the shots.

A movie is only as good as its ending. At the very least, that’s certainly how it can feel right after you finish watching one. Of course, each film demands a different kind of finale, and it would be futile to try and generically describe what makes for a “good” one — you know one when you see it. Some stories are best served by ending with a jarring twist that makes you reconsider everything you’ve seen before it. Others require the perfect note of ambiguity, or that immortal line of dialogue to help seal the deal. Every great film ends on its own terms, but all of them do so in a way that ultimately makes the whole experience impossible to forget. Here are the 20 best movie endings of the 21st Century.

Jia Zhangke has long been revered as a leading figure of mainland China’s sixth generation of filmmakers, with films like “The World” and “Still Life” premiering — and, in the case of the latter, winning the top prize — at major international film festivals. Jia now has a new feather in his cap, and it’s one few (if any) other filmmakers can lay claim to: a noodle shop in his hometown of Fenyang.

Named for “Mountains May Depart” (“Shan He Gu Ren”), which premiered at Cannes last year, the restaurant features posters for the film as well as some of the honors it received on the festival circuit. The menu is apparently less expansive: Dao Bo Mian, a kind of sliced noodle, is the primary dish served. It comes with dumplings and will set customers back $8.60, according to New China.

Glenn here. Each Tuesday we bring you reviews and features on documentaries from theatres, festivals, and on demand. This week we’re looking at Walter Salles' doc about Chinese film giant Jia Zhangke.
In the opening scene of Jia Zhangke’s sublime Mountains May Depart, characters dance to the Pet Shop Boys’ euphoric rendition of “Go West”. The song may have been a demand for a gay utopia, but it is also an apt choice for a movie in which characters slowly shift from rural China to the blue skies and bright lights of Australia. Zhangke’s characters are often caught between two worlds, travelling down a road (literal of metaphorical) to an unknown future and it is these pervading themes that have made him the unofficial cinematic chronicler of modern day China. They are also what makes Jia Zhangke: A Guy from Fenyang such a fitting tribute to the man.

Movies are so rarely great art that if we cannot appreciate great trash we have very little reason to be interested in them. – Pauline Kael.
The above quote from the late, legendary American film critic Kael was most certainly not referring to Lamberto Bava’s Demons (1985), but a lot of films in our beloved genre bow to this description. Demons is great trash – it wants nothing more to assault your senses with a barrage of images and sound for 88 minutes before you even know what hit you, and does so while breathing that rarified Italian air.
But I’m sure she was referring to a film like Demons – one made with a ton of style, by a filmmaker impassioned with his chosen topic, as ridiculous as that plays on the screen. And make no mistake, Demons is ridiculous; as a matter of fact, it starts there before rapidly ascending to the sublime.

Admitting this is the first film by Jia Zhangke that I’ve seen may lose me some street cred, but I was pleased to finally discover the filmmaker via his latest exploration of modern China, Mountains May Depart. A universal story of the irresistible draw of the present meeting the inexorable march of the future, the film stands as a bold, compassionate statement for the power of gestures and the ripples they cause through time.
And it opens with a dance sequence set to the Pet Shop Boys’ “Go West”, which is about as ambitious an opening as you could hope for.
Taking place in three different periods – 1999, 2014 and 2025, with changing aspect ratios to match – in China and later Australia, the film charts the ups and downs in lives of three friends:...

The first trailer for Mountains May Depart was released last week and the Cannes nominee looks to be one of the more interesting films of the year. It is directed by Jia Zhang-ke.
The official synopsis is as follows:
At once an intimate drama and a decades-spanning epic that leaps from the recent past to the present to the speculative near-future, Jia’s new film is an intensely moving study of how China’s economic boom – and the culture of materialism it has spawned – has affected the bonds of family, tradition, and love. Mountains May Depart opens in 1999 to the strains of the Pet Shop Boys’ “Go West,” a song whose promise of blue skies captures the dreams of affluence that seized so many Chinese youth at the turn of the century. In Fenyang, childhood friends Liangzi, a coal miner, and Zhang, the owner of a gas station, are...

“I think in order for a movie to be appreciated, it ultimately needs to be an aesthetic creation,” director Jia Zhang-ke told us at Cannes this year. “Who would care for a film depicting a lot of social realities but devoid of a sense of aesthetics? If my movies have appealed to an international audience, I hope it’s because on a substantial level, they bring the contemporary Chinese experience to the big screen, and that at the same time, they have an artistic quality to them.”
There’s certainly an appeal over here for his latest, Mountains May Depart, which is a three-part, decades-panning drama that stops by New York Film Festival this week following Cannes, Tiff, and more. Ahead of a release in the first half of next year by Kino Lorber, the first (unsubtitled) international trailer has landed, along with a set of evocative posters.

The entwined subjects of time passing and landscapes changing have always been synonymous with the work of Chinese director Jia Zhang-ke; his latest feature, Mountains May Depart, expands these ideas to a point that exists beyond any previously established horizon. The film may well be Jia’s most ambitious to date, in this respect: it spans three decades in all, touching down in 1999, 2014 and 2025, so essentially covering our past, present and future. As with all of Jia’s work, location here plays an integral role – like Platform and Pick Pocket, the narrative revolves around the director’s hometown of Fenyang – with scenes unfolding among local festivities on packed streets, or upon the scorched earth of a local coal mine that recalls similar shots in Barbara Loden’s Wanda. And just as we witnessed the gradual construction of the Yangtze River’s Three Gorges Dam (and inevitable destruction of the...

Cannes — Even at a more civilized festival such as Cannes, it can be hard to catch every single movie in competition. There are always a few that will slip through the cracks and you can always count on the inevitable life drama moment to rear its ugly head. Unlike other festivals, Cannes has less repeat screenings across the board. That also makes things tough for one person to chronicle it all. With less than 24 hours left in the festival we’re happy to say we've been able to cover 10 Cannes selections in depth. Here are capsule reviews for another six selections you may still be curious about. [Expect full reviews of “Macbeth,” “The Little Prince” and “Chronic” by the end of the weekend as well as some thoughts on whether Oscar stepped out on la Croisette this year.] "Louder Than Bombs" Director: Joachim Trier Cast: Jesse Eisenberg, Gabriel Byrne, Amy Ryan, Isabelle Huppert, David Strathairn, David Druid Reaction: Trier’s first English language film is sort of a mixed bag. ★★★☆☆ Following his well-regarded A Touch of Sin (2013), which played in Cannes a couple of years ago, Jia Zhang-ke is back in competition with a new three-part drama, Mountains May Depart (2015). Each section takes on a different period in time starting in 1999. China is moving toward the new millennium with confidence and optimism - ironically underlined by a group dancing to the pumped-up strains of The Pet Shop Boys singing The Pet Shop Boys' Go West. This is before the popularity of widescreen televisions, and so the first section takes place in the old box pan-and-scan 4:3 ratio. Two friends Liang (Liang Jingdong) and Jingsheng (Zhang Yi) vie for the affections of Tao (Jia's wife Zhao Tao).

No one expected much from "Pretty Woman" when they were making it. It was a modestly-budgeted romantic comedy whose stars were Richard Gere (then in the depths of a career slump) and Eric Roberts's kid sister. But when the movie was released, 25 years ago this week (on March 23, 1990), the project was transformed from overlooked stepsister to box office royalty. Mirroring her on-screen Cinderella makeover, Julia Roberts went from little-known ingenue to queen of Hollywood. Plus, the film saved Gere's career and (along with 1989's "When Harry Met Sally") revived the romantic comedy genre in Hollywood.
A quarter-century later, "Pretty Woman" remains a fan favorite, one you've seen a million times on cable. Even so, there's much you may not know about the movie -- the difficulties in casting (Gere and Roberts weren't anyone's first, second, or third choices), crises on the set, what was left out of the final film,...

As that classic media intro says, “return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear”, for this new release is set in the old West. This was a classic backdrop for so many films, going back over one hundred years to The Great Train Robbery, but the Western has become a rarity in the last decade or so. Recent attempts at big budget revivals like Cowboys & Aliens and last Summer’s reboot of The Lone Ranger were box office sinkholes. But happily, more modestly budgeted independent films have taken up the reins. One of the stars that seems quite at ease on horseback is Oscar-winner Tommy Lee Jones, so it was no great surprise that his feature film directing debut nine years ago was a modern-day Western, The Three Burials Of Melquiades Estrada. For his film making return Jones has gone back, nearly a century and a half, to...

We've only recently begun dusting off the Best Original Song contenders section and filling it out with prospective players in the upcoming Oscar race (though the ranking is arbitrary for the moment). You can bet the wonderful "Lost Stars" from "Begin Again" will be a force, and I imagine Stephen Sondheim's original offerings for "Into the Woods" will be in play, too. But another song that deserves to be in the thick of it is "Land Ho!," Keegan DeWitt's title track from Martha Stephens and Aaron Katz's Sundance sensation. Inspired by songs like Go West's "The King of Wishful Thinking," Fine Young Cannibals' "She Drives Me Crazy" and Terence Trent D'Arby's "Wishing Well," as well as films like "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," DeWitt set out to craft something that felt of another time. It's tongue-in-cheek, but it still gets at the heart of the movie,...

“Washington is not a place to live in. The rents are high, the food is bad, the dust is disgusting and the morals are deplorable. Go West, young man, go West and grow up with the country”
Horace Greely
Editor, New York Tribune
July 13, 1865 Editorial
The New York Tribune, established in 1841, was the most progressive and influential newspaper of its day. Horace Greeley, founder and editor of the paper, was a notable social reformer and political activist and through his leadership, the Tribune advocated for abolition, the legal protection of unions, protectionism (known today as anti-globalization or anti-free trade), and against nativism, the political position of demanding a favored status for certain established inhabitants of a nation as compared to claims of newcomers or immigrants. (In modern America Greely would be considered a leftist liberal Democrat, though in the antebellum, Civil War, and eras those beliefs belonged to the Republican nee Whig Party.

Neil Tennant has acknowledged that the Pet Shop Boys’ new album will come as something of a relief to the band’s fans, after their most recent efforts diverted from their much-loved disco anthem sound.
“No one got excited when they heard the Pet Shop Boys were releasing an album about living in La and getting old,” he muses to HuffPostUK. “But they strangely got a bit more enlivened by the news that a disco album was on the way.”
The Pet Shop Boys’ mastery of this particular genre has resulted in 50 million album sales, including a catalogue of hits including 'West End Girls', 'Rent' and 'Go West'.
Go on... remind yourself...
For their 12th studio album, 'Electric', they’ve turned to the talents of master-mixer Stuart Price, the man who put Madonna on the dance-floor for the 'Confessions' album.

Go West, Woody Allen!
The legendary director traveled through Europe for his last two movies, "Midnight in Paris" and "To Rome With Love." Now, he's heading back to America's West Coast for his newest film, "Blue Jasmine." The first trailer lays out the basic story: Cate Blanchett is a spoiled socialite whose world comes crashing down when her rich husband (Alec Baldwin) turns out to be a crook.
"I'm dead broke. The government took everything," a tipsy and teary Blanchett moans.
She flies to San Francisco to stay with her sister (Sally Hawkins), but doesn't quite fit in with her blue-collar life or friends (Bobby Cannavale and -- wow! -- Andrew Dice Clay). Louis C.K., Peter Sarsgaard, and Michael Stuhlberg also star.
"Anxieties nightmares, and a nervous breakdown," Blanchett says. "There's only so many traumas a person can withstand before they take to the streets and start screaming!"

Summer TV shows usually don’t get me very excited. Some of them are okay, some of them are great, and some of them just annoy me. If I’ve got nothing better to do, there are a few of those summer shows that I end up watching fairly regularly. That’s changed this year, mostly because of A&E and their addition Longmire.
I like westerns and have for a long time. I can remember watching Terence Hill movies when I was just a tiny little starry-eyed sprocket. Arrow Films delves once again into the treasure trove of cult genre favourites from the video shop era, bringing their restoration process to the Dario Argento-produced 1985 horror Demons and its sequel from the following year, Demons 2.
On a subway train, a student named Cheryl is offered free cinema tickets by a mysterious masked stranger. Instead of discarding them as any sane person would, she decides instead to take her friend along to the screening. The film in question is a teens-in-peril horror where one of the characters manages to scratch his face on a demonic-looking mask, echoing what happens earlier to a patron playing with that very prop in the cinema’s lobby.
The scratch appears to unleash some kind of infection, turning the audience member into green, gunk-spewing creatures. Before long, there’s carnage on and off screen as the cinema turns into a battleground between the living and undead.

Seems like the major labels will continue to mine the nostalgia angle with the hope that they can squeeze a few more ducats from aging music fans everywhere. Fine by me, if the music merits the "super-deluxe-never-before-heard-or-seen" treatment. And since I've been sucked into that black hole with the Dead, Stones, Rush, Hendrix, Jesus & Mary Chain, et al., I've missed some amazing music and culture this past year. No excuses now as I cram a full year's worth of culture down my gullet before Christmas. You can check out more of my favorite culture from 2011 in these Spring, Summer, and Fall articles.

There's no question that the biggest DVD and Blu-ray release this week is Christopher Nolan's Inception (with Shrek Forever After also likely to sell a ton of copies), but if you're looking to get some last-minute Christmas gift ideas, you might find a few other odds and ends hitting stores this week as well. Sandy Collora, director of popular fan films Batman: Dead End and World's Finest, has his first feature film Hunter Prey finally out on DVD today, plus the indie comedy Barry Munday starring Patrick Wilson and The Year of Getting to Know Us starring Jimmy Fallon. Some interesting non-fiction releases include Restrepo, Big River Man and Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel, plus the first volume of the Espn 30 for 30 series. All this plus Criterion Bd releases for Cronos and Videodrome, and for Reed Farrington, it's Trek Stars Go West! What will you be buying or renting this week?...

Sid and Marty Krofft created a legacy of colorful weirdness, and a window into their strange psychedelic world been captured in an upcoming DVD release.
We got our paws on this new DVD, titled Sid and Marty Krofft's Saturday Morning Hits, and found a great compilation of many of the Krofft brothers' wonderfully strange shows. The DVD includes an episode each from many of the series that the creative brothers helped to establish.
And, oh boy, are they wonderfully strange - I sat and watched Sigmund & the Sea Monsters, Bugaloos, and Electra Woman and Dyna Girl and they are absolutely a blast from an age gone by. Of the three, Electra Woman and Dyna Girl was likely the most entertaining, with its catchy theme song and spandex wearing super-heroines. For an extra kick, I found that horror favorite Sid Haig appeared in the episode as an evil and malevolent Djinn!
