Exclusive: The production outfit behind Netflix’s Prince Andrew feature Scoop is working with Sarah Lancashire on an “ambitious, contemporary returning series” that Lancashire will star in.
Lighthouse Film & Television is teaming with Lancashire’s recently launched Via Pictures on the show, we can reveal, which Lighthouse co-founder Radford Neville teased is a “research heavy project inspired by real characters.”
Conversations with networks have already begun and Lancashire will star, contradicting reports that emerged earlier this week that she has retired from acting.
Lancashire launched Via Pictures with husband and former BBC and Banijay UK boss Peter Salmon last year upon the conclusion of Happy Valley, one of the corporation’s biggest dramas of the past decade.
“When we set up Lighthouse in 2019 we talked to Sarah about developing something specifically for her,” added Neville. “In the interim she has set up Via and towards the end of last year...

Oxford grad Hugh Grant has outgrown most of his romantic comedy ticks from his early years – flopsy-mopsy hair, fluttery eyelashes and charming stutter – and has matured into an exceptional and versatile actor. Not that he has lost his sense of humor. Anyone who chuckled over his villainous turn in this year’s “Paddington 2” as a pompous, cravat-wrapped actor who frames his cuddly ursine co-star for a crime he didn’t commit can testify to that Then there was his finely tuned scoundrel turn in the BBC miniseries, “A Very English Scandal,“ in which his Parliament member Jeremy Thorpe plots the botched murder of his male lover.
Grant began his acting career in the ‘80s as secondary player in both British period pieces — some good (“Maurice”) and others faintly ridiculous (“The Lair of the White Moon”) – and Hollywood comedies (the gangster farce “Mickey Blue Eyes”). But any hopes that he...

Fly on the wall? Pah! The wall is all the way over there! These days, viewers want to be flies buzzing right around the noses of the people making the headlines, close enough to tell what they had for breakfast. And thanks to true story TV dramas, they can.
It’s been a long time since ropey Lifetime Movies were as good as it got for true story TV. In recent years, British production companies have stepped up in a big way to serve a growing appetite for fact-based drama, but all too often the real-life TV dramas of today focus on haunting tales of history’s most gruesome murders. If you’re sick of serial killers, there are plenty of non-murder true stories to enjoy in drama form, from very public scandals to ordinary people doing extraordinary things, to the kinds of tragedies it’s important that we never forget.

Norman Scott has condemned his portrayal in the BBC’s A Very English Scandal.
The English model was played by Ben Whishaw in the 2018 miniseries. Whishaw won an Emmy, Bafta, and Golden Globe for his performance.
A Very English Scandal saw Hugh Grant play former Liberal leader Jeremy Thorpe, who was acquitted of conspiring with a hitman to kill his alleged ex-lover Scott. Homosexuality was illegal at the time.
Scott appeared on the podcast British Scandal: Jeremy Thorpe, and praised Whishaw’s performance but admitted that he was “very cross” over his portrayal in the drama.
Scott, 83, said: “Ben was being a very good actor, he had met me, he knew me, and I hoped that he would be me…
“I think it was very – I can say it because it’s what I believe – it was a black comedy. It was very unkind. But Ben played me very well.

Jon S Baird’s miniseries opens in 1960s Westminster, where John Stonehouse (Matthew Macfadyen) is an up-and-comer in the Labour Party. “What do we know about him?” asks prime minister Harold Wilson. “Working-class boy. Parents both trade unionists. Served in the Raf during the war.” Naturally, he’s made aviation minister – a role that takes him to Prague and into the arms of an obvious honey trap. “We would like you to become an unofficial representative of our country in Great Britain,” he’s told, in a smoke-filled Soviet interrogation room, as the film of his tryst is slid across the table. And so begins the decade-long unravelling of his life, a process that will end with him leaving his folded clothes and passport on a Florida beach and swimming out to sea.

Emily Maitlis, whose notorious interview with Prince Andrew forced the disgraced royal to announce his departure from public life, has revealed she believes the prince “had behaved rather well.”
The former BBC presenter, who interviewed the prince for its flagship Newsnight programme, told The Times that the duke’s behaviour compared favourably with most politicians.
She said, “I felt he’d behaved rather well. He had given us this hour in the palace and was willing to talk about stuff. Most politicians now won’t even talk about their own policies. So at least he had guts.”
And she shared her sentiment that the prince had also enjoyed the interview, unaware of the grief it would bring him. She said, “He spent a long time afterwards chatting to us and allowing us to take shots going along the corridors. He even gave me this guided tour, saying, ‘Her Majesty is just up these stairs.

The two women responsible for persuading Prince Andrew to sit down on camera and give his now-notorious interview explaining his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein are now in competition to bring the behind-the-screen events to film.
Deadline previously exclusively announced that Sam McAlister, the former Newsnight interviews producer, had sold the screen rights of her book, Scoops, which explained how Prince Andrew’s chat and other celebrated TV encounters were secured and managed.
Now the Times reports that Emily Maitlis, the interviewer who won plaudits for the way she managed the interview with the Prince, has partnered with production company Blueprint Pictures to bring the 2019 interview to screen as a scripted drama.
Blueprint previously made A Very English Scandal, starring Hugh Grant as shamed British MP Jeremy Thorpe, and A Very British Scandal which starred Claire Foy as the scandalous Duchess of Argyll. The Times reports that it will screen on...

The race is on to bring the already notorious ‘Wagatha Christie’ defamation trial to our screens, following this week’s conclusion at London’s High Court.
The battle between footballers’ wives Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy (married to Wayne Rooney and Jamie Vardy respectively) concluded after two and a half long years, with the judge ruling in favour of Rooney. Vardy had originally brought the case to court, claiming defamation after Rooney unveiled her as the culprit behind a roll-call of stories about her and her family leaked to the press. Rooney had laid a trap for Vardy restricting her Instagram account so that she knew who could see her posts, leading to the day she announced on social media the results of her investigation, saying, “It’s….. Rebekah Vardy.” Thus was #WagathaChristie born.
When Vardy’s case for libel finally arrived in the British courtroom, weeks of witness statements...

In 2021, “WandaVision” star Paul Bettany made history as the first man to be Emmy-nominated for a lead performance on a Marvel TV series, thus laying the groundwork for 2022 hopefuls Tom Hiddleston (“Loki”), Oscar Isaac (“Moon Knight”) and Jeremy Renner (“Hawkeye”). Although he lost the last Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor race to Ewan McGregor (“Halston”), he may now get an immediate second shot at the same prize based on his work on “A Very British Scandal.” Luckily for him, there is ample precedent for back-to-back bids in this category.
The first man recognized twice in a row for TV movie and/or limited series roles was Mickey Rooney. His example has been followed by 16 others, beginning with George C. Scott. Next came Hal Holbrook and Laurence Olivier, the latter of whom then became the category’s first three-time consecutive nominee with his 1975 bid for “Love Among the Ruins.”

In 1979, British parliamentarian Jeremy Thorpe was acquitted of conspiring to murder his former lover, Norman Josiffe, mere weeks after the scandal put a decisive end to his political career. His seat has since been filled by four other North Devon representatives and, since his death in 2014, his story has been dramatised both in literary form and for television. “A Very English Scandal” aired in 2018 and received four Primetime Emmy nominations the next year, winning one for the supporting performance of Ben Whishaw as Josiffe.
38-year-old Whishaw was an age-appropriate choice for the role, as Josiffe was 39 when the trial came to an end. However, he was required to act as young as 21 in flashback scenes, and the two-decade age difference between him and series lead Hugh Grant was nearly 10 years larger than that of Josiffe and Thorpe. At the time of his win, Whishaw was the ninth youngest winner in his category,...

Claire Foy and Paul Bettany are set as the stars of Amazon and BBC One’s “A Very British Scandal,” a followup to the Hugh Grant-led “A Very English Scandal.”

Per Amazon, “Famed for her charisma, beauty and style, Margaret, Duchess of Argyll, dominated the front pages as a divorcee featuring accusations of forgery, theft, violence, drug-taking, secret recording, bribery, and an explicit polaroid picture all played out in the white-hot glare of the 1960s media. ‘A Very British Scandal’ turns this scandal inside out in order to explore the social and political climate of post-war Britain, looking at attitudes toward women, and asking whether institutional misogyny was widespread at the time. The BBC and Amazon have signed up The Crown’s Claire Foy and WandaVision star Paul Bettany to headline the long-awaited second season of A Very English Scandal.

The three-part second will be titled A Very British Scandal given its Scottish subject, and production is set to commence later this year.

The second season centers on a 1963 sex scandal involving Margaret Campbell, the Duchess of Argyll. The 2019 Primetime Emmys on Sunday felt more like the BAFTAs as half of the awards were handed to Brits or Brit-produced shows.

Always a prestigious category, actors better known for their big screen work often find a place here, and that’s the case again this year, as half the nominees are past Supporting Actor Oscar winners. In fact, one of them actually won two Academy Awards. All three have succumbed to the allure of a Limited Series rather than TV movie, and to show just how lopsided this category is, not one of the six nominees comes from a standalone movie this time around. Five are veteran actors, while one made his professional feature acting debut less than three years ago. But still, all have something in common— none of them have ever won an Emmy.

Up for his first Emmy nomination for playing a murderous Member of Parliament in A Very English Scandal, Hugh Grant today took a killer aim at perpetually ruffled UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson over the move to suspend the House of Commons and slide in a no-deal Brexit.
The Golden Globe winning actor who played possibly the most beloved fictional 10 Downing Street resident ever in Love Actually had little of that infamous British stiff upper lip in chastising the former London Mayor for the potential constitutional crisis and anti-democratic taint created by the five-week suspension:
You will not fuck with my children’s future. You will not destroy the freedoms my grandfather fought two world wars to defend. Fuck off you over-promoted rubber bath toy. Britain is revolted by you and you little gang of masturbatory prefects. https://t.co/Oc0xwLI6dI

Crimes, scandals and nuclear meltdowns: There’s certainly no lack of drama among this year’s Emmy nominees for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.
There’s no lack of awards-show cred, either: Three of the six nominated actors already have an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor sitting in their trophy cases. Sam Rockwell danced his way to a nod as famed choreographer Bob Fosse in the FX biopic Fosse/Verdon, Mahershala Ali earned a nomination for playing Arkansas state detective Wayne Hays in Season 3 of HBO’s True Detective, and Benicio del Toro is in the mix,...

It seems unlikely that, at 58, Hugh Grant is celebrating his first Emmy nomination after a career spanning more than three decades, and which started on the small screen. Indeed, after his big breakthrough in 1994’s Four Weddings and a Funeral, he became such a big star that much of his earlier, lesser-known TV work was hastily rushed out onto video with his face dominating the packaging, so hot was the market for all things Grant. But in the shockwave of stardom that followed Four Weddings, Grant mainly kept his sights locked on the big screen.
That makes Amazon’s A Very English Scandal Grant’s first major television project since his career took flight, as television’s golden age continues to erode notions of a classist separation between the forms. And the nomination itself—for Lead Actor, Limited Series—is no surprise. As Jeremy Thorpe, the British politician forced to...

And the next prime minister of Great Britain will be… Hugh Grant!
Okay, maybe not.
However, Grant says he has entertained the idea of running for office. “I have thought about it a bit to be honest,” Grant says in this week’s episode of “The Big Ticket,” Variety and iHeart’s movie podcast.
The 58-year-old actor knows his way around politics after being on the forefront of the battle against British tabloids that regularly bugged his and other celebrities’ phones. His anti-hacking campaign uncovered cozy relationships that elected officials had with press barons, including Rupert Murdoch.
He even has an campaign slogan. “My main slogan would be, ‘I Don’t Want to Be Reelected.’ It seems to me that the desire to be reelected or be a career politician poisons everything,” Grant said.
While Grant says he “gets incandescently angry” watching today’s political news, the chances of him actually running are pretty slim.

Hugh Grant has been very active in U.K. press reform initiatives, but he knows the problem is even bigger than the media moguls who control the world’s major news outlets. That’s why Hacked Off, the campaign he’s involved with, is also expanding its scope to include the impact of online propaganda.
“It’s particularly terrifying, the triumph of technology over democracy,” Grant told Variety‘s “My Favorite Episode” podcast. “You realize, Trump couldn’t have happened without Facebook manipulation, and Brexit couldn’t have happened without it. It’s all the ability now, people with enough money and resources, to manipulate swing voters through very highly tailored Facebook ads.”
Grant’s solution: “I would just pull the plug on social media,” he said. “I look at the pluses and minuses, and to me the minuses way outweigh the pluses. We had perfectly decent lives before social media.

Most Oscarologists are aware that half of the Best Picture winners so far this decade have been biopics or truth-based tales featuring real-life people. The titles? “The King’s Speech,” “Argo,” “12 Years a Slave,” “Spotlight” and “Green Book.”
But did you realize that Emmy’s limited series contest also has a long-held fondness for truth-based tales. Looking at the Gold Derby combined odds list, I realized that five out of the top six contenders are either biopics or accounts of an impactful real-life event. Showtime’s “Escape at Dannemora,” the front-runner for now before the Emmy nominations are announced on Tuesday, is based on a 2015 prison escape in Upstate New York (see photo above). HBO’s historical drama “Chernobyl” zeroes in on the 1986 nuclear disaster in the Soviet Union.

This story originally appeared in the Movies & Limited Series issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
In a recent sketch, James Corden impersonated Hugh Grant in moments from three separate classic romantic comedies. Corden threw on a messy brown wig and did identical impressions of a sheepish, stammering leading man in riffs on “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Notting Hill” and “Bridget Jones’s Diary.”
But in 2019, that Hugh Grant is gone, replaced by a sly but still smirking gentleman. Grant’s performance in “A Very English Scandal” may momentarily remind you of the innate likability we’ve seen in Grant’s rom-coms. But what’s new is the imposing physicality and sinister, even villainous side he unlocks. And Grant is enjoying playing the bad guy for a change.
“I don’t get offered romantic comedies anymore,” Grant said. “And thank God. I’m too old. And it’s lovely to be doing some different stuff.

When Ben Whishaw won a Golden Globe earlier this year for his performance as Norman Scott in “A Very English Scandal,” it was exciting for fans of the actor and his performance, but it was also meaningful to witness. Whishaw publicly came out as gay in 2014 and here he was five years later accepting an award for playing a gay man. In 2019 that might not seem like a big deal, when we’ve had queer performers like Sarah Paulson and Kate McKinnon winning Emmys and cisgender heterosexual actors winning Oscars for playing Lgbtq characters, but it is statistically very rare for openly queer actors to win awards for playing openly queer characters. After winning at the Golden Globes, the Critics’ Choice Awards and the BAFTA TV Awards, though, Whishaw could be on his way to a rare Emmy victory later this year, and that would be the pinnacle of queer excellence.

The “Deadwood” reunion movie premiered May 31, the last day to qualify for Emmy eligibility, and according to the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby readers (make or update your own right here), it’s a strong contender to win Best TV Movie. It’s neck-and-neck with “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.” But what about the race for Best Movie/Mini Actor? As of this writing Ian McShane looks like an underdog in a race against Oscar winners Mahershala Ali (“True Detective”), Sam Rockwell (“Fosse/Verdon“) and Benicio Del Toro (“Escape at Dannemora”). Might we be underestimating him?
McShane was lauded during the series’s original run (2004-2006) for his performance as Al Swearengen, the ruthless, foul-mouthed owner of a saloon in the title town. But he only earned a single Emmy nomination for Best Drama Actor (2005), which he lost to James Spader (“Boston Legal”). Since then he has appeared in a number...

Ben Whishaw (“A Very English Scandal“) has led our Emmy predictions for Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actor ever since we opened our predictions center earlier this spring. But might we be underestimating his rivals? According to our racetrack odds, he needs to be most wary of two actors from “Catch-22“: Oscar winner George Clooney and past Emmy champ Kyle Chandler.
Whishaw co-stars in “Scandal” as Norman Scott, who is the victim of an attempted murder orchestrated by his lover, prominent politician Jeremy Thorpe (played by Hugh Grant). Written by BAFTA winner Russell T. Davies and directed by Oscar nominee Stephen Frears, the three-part series certainly had an impressive pedigree, and Whishaw has already been awarded for his performance by the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards.

But “Catch-22” wasn’t eligible at those awards since it didn’t premiere until this May.

When Hugh Grant visited my office a few weeks ago, I told him the last time I interviewed him was for Entertainment Weekly on his breakout 1994 movie “Four Weddings and a Funeral.” That was the first of several Richard Curtis-written roles that cemented his career trajectory as what he calls a “dishy leading man.”
Cut to his mid-50s, when Grant has broken out of that box into a series of roles that showcase his wide range of skills: the tap-dancing villain in “Paddington 2,” the conflicted husband opposite Meryl Streep in the title role “Florence Foster Jenkins,” and most recently, the role of the murderous, closeted politician Jeremy Thorpe in another Stephen Frears project, “A Very English Scandal” (BBC/Amazon Studios), which scored Grant a Golden Globe nomination en route to the Emmys.

Hugh Grant has had an incredibly rich career, gracing the big screen first as the bumbling leading love interest, then later as the handsome but mischievous cad. He's best known for his roles in rom-coms such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones's Diary, and Love Actually. Following his rom-com reign, the British actor focused on his family and made a foray into politics with the organization Hacked Off.
Over the last few years, he's returned to the pop culture realm as Paddington's arch-nemesis Phoenix Buchanan and the sex-scandalized politician Jeremy Thorpe. Soon, we'll get to see him reprise his beloved role from Four Weddings and a Funeral in NBC's Red Nose Day Special on May 23. But if you can't get enough of this Brit, you'll be able to catch him on Netflix right now. Look ahead to see all of the Hugh Grant titles you can stream this very moment!

“The whole nation was loving it,” recalls Hugh Grant of the real-life political intrigue that inspired “A Very English Scandal.” Grant, who was a teenager at the time the events were unfolding in 1979, remembers it being a “fabulous comedy-drama unfolding in front of us. It had this brilliant sort of ‘Monty Python’ aspect to it because it was really about the absurdity of the British establishment.” Powerful men “ran the country, and if they got into trouble, they backed each other up and hushed up their scandals.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Grant above or listen to the audio version below.

Director Stephen Frears is a man of few words. Quite notoriously, actually. After winning a BAFTA on April 28 for his helming of the limited series “A Very English Scandal,” he zoomed through the photography line, begrudgingly posing only for two or three photos with his golden mask. And then he ambled for our brief interview, handing his BAFTA to a PR person without a second look as if it were an empty glass of champagne.
Frears has quite a workmanlike attitude toward filmmaking. This attitude, while not rude, does result in some startlingly honest answers, He tells it how it is. “A Very English Scandal,” was “very, very good fun, a very easy job. And I cannot stress easy enough. It was very well-written, we had very good actors, all of the nominees from our show who won tonight thoroughly deserve it. The others were robbed.” he says flashing a rare smile.

BBC drama “A Very English Scandal” was the big winner at the BAFTA TV Craft Awards on April 29, scoring three trophies, including costume design, editing (fiction), and director (fiction) for Stephen Frears.
Distributed in the United States by Amazon, the three-part limited series starred Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw and was based on an actual English sex scandal from the 1970s involving a Liberal Member of Parliament named Jeremy Thorpe.
BBC America’s “Killing Eve” and the Sky Atlantic/Showtime miniseries “Patrick Melrose” each took home two awards, with the former winning for original score and sound (fiction) and the latter for production design as well as writer (drama) for David Nicholls.
The wins serve as a feather in the cap for both “Killing Eve” and “A Very English Scandal,” both of which hope to make a splash in the year’s Emmy race.

Seeking to diversify and bolster its scripted output, Banijay Rights has signed a first-look development deal with Ellie Wood (“Bleak House”), a veteran British producer who founded and runs the independent production company Clearwood Films.
Under the pact, Banjiay Rights and Wood will work together to develop and produce all of Clearwood Films’ TV series for the U.K. and international markets. Banijay Rights will also handle international sales on the shows.
Caroline Torrance, the head of scripted at Banijay Rights, said this “new partnership further bolsters Banijay’s commitment and expertise in scripted programming, and capitalizes on the continued growth we are witnessing in the drama market.”
The first drama to be co-developed by both companies is “Stonehouse,” a spy thriller series based on an idea by John Preston, the author of “A Very English Scandal.”

Bleecker Street’s Leave No Trace took home the movie prize for best adapted screenplay and Russell T Davies and author John Preston won the TV award for BBC/Amazon’s A Very English Scandal tonight at the 31st annual USC Scripter Awards.
The awards honor the authors of printed works alongside the screenwriters who adapt their stories.
This year’s film honor, which presented to screenwriters Debra Granik and Anne Rosellini, and Peter Rock, whose novel My Abandonment the script was based, will break the Scripter’s eight-year winning streak of winners going on to victory at the Oscars: Leave No Trace can’t win an Academy Award because it wasn’t nominated in the category.
Granik directed the pic, which stars Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie as a military veteran father and his daughter living an unconventional life off-the-grid...
