People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) ran an undercover sting on a Georgia-based animal training firm that services the major studios and networks. Then the activist group filed a Feb. 21 complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture alleging violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The Usda’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service tells THR that it’s reviewing the matter. “Aphis takes all animal welfare-related complaints very seriously,” says a spokesperson.
The company, Atlanta Film Animals (Afa), disputes PETA’s claims related to a variety of its creatures, from monkeys to cockatoos. It also counters that it has evidence it will share with the federal agency that, in at least one instance, the clandestine operative failed to adequately provide medication to a pair of elderly pigs — which the organization denies.

“Succession” co-stars James Cromwell and Nicholas Braun will reunite on Saturday, Jan. 6, at the grand opening of PETA’s Los Angeles event space, the James Cromwell Empathy Center.
Cromwell is known as an outspoken animal rights activist. He will do the honor of cutting the ribbon at the ceremony, which takes place the same day he is nominated for a Creative Arts Award Emmy.
Cromwell and Braun starred as Uncle Ewan and Cousin Greg, respectively, on HBO’s “Succession,” which ended with a bang in 2023 with its fourth and final season. Their characters have a contentious relationship onscreen, as Cousin Greg longs to fit in with the Roy family and Uncle Ewan looks down upon him, threatening to pull his inheritance.
“There is no successor to James Cromwell — he is the king of activism for animals and others,” said Lisa Lange, senior vice president of PETA, in a statement. “Animals...

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” has earned both rave reviews from Marvel fans and shocked reactions to the horrifying flashbacks depicting Rocket Raccoon’s dark past. For the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), those flashbacks make the film the “best animal rights film of the year.”
“Through Rocket, James Gunn has put a face, a name, and a personality on the millions of vulnerable animals being cycled through laboratories as we speak,” praised PETA senior VP Lisa Lange in a statement to media. “PETA is celebrating this as the best animal rights film of the year for helping audiences see animals as individuals and suggesting that just because we can experiment on them doesn’t mean that we should.”
While many of the unethical and abusive experiments that the Marvel film’s villain, The High Evolutionary, puts Rocket and his friends through are based in sci-fi,...

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 writer and director James Gunn has been recognized by PETA for telling the origin story of Rocket Raccoon’s early days being raised in a scientific laboratory.
Gunn received the “Not a Number” Award on Monday, May 8th — just days after the film’s release in theaters. The final installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy hearkens back to the cruel experimentation Rocket endured at the hands of the High Evolutionary, from whom he was eventually able to escape.
PETA hopes everyone can take inspiration from his story to speak out against animal experimentation and demand that corporations, universities, and government agencies switch to research methods that don’t involve animals.

[Spoiler Alert: The following post contains numerous spoilers for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”]
Comic book movies aren’t often thought to be vehicles for social change, but People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals disagrees.
The organization announced today it’s given a Not a Number Award to director James Gunn for his depiction of the cruelties of animal testing in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.” In a statement, PETA said the award recognized Gunn’s “unflinching advocacy” in the film, “reminding viewers that all animals deserve a life of freedom under the open sky rather than confinement to laboratory cages.”
Much of “Vol. 3” concerns the backstory of Rocket (Bradley Cooper), a sentient raccoon given consciousness (and mad fighting skills) by enduring horrific pain in a lab — sure, he becomes aware, but only to be haunted by the memories of his torment. Not a fair tradeoff. And many of his fellow animals were killed in that lab,...

Peta has condemned the use of real horses on television show sets after a horse died in rehearsal for The Rings of Power.
The animal was reportedly one of more than 30 on the set of the Lord of the Rings-based programme on the day of its death.
A spokesperson for Amazon Studios shared that the horse died of a cardiac arrest in a statement released on Sunday (26 March).
“We are deeply saddened to confirm that a production horse died,” the statement reads.
“The incident took place in the morning whilst the horse was being exercised prior to rehearsals.
“The trainer was not in costume, and filming had yet to commence. Both a veterinarian and a representative of the American Humane Association were present at the time. The independent necropsy has confirmed that the horse died of cardiac failure.”

A tragedy has occurred on the set of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power — a production horse perished during rehearsals for a season 2 scene.

Elizabeth Banks has been recognized by PETA with the “Beary Best” Award for directing her upcoming horror-comedy flick, Cocaine Bear, without the use of any real bears.
The film’s director-producer received the accolade on Thursday (February 23rd) ahead of the movie’s wide release the following day. Though it seems fairly obvious that some movie magic would be needed to recreate the titular animal’s drug-fueled rampage, Banks notably opted to substitute its furry antagonist entirely with CGI and a human “bear performer.”
In a statement, PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange shared, “Cocaine Bear’s hyper-realistic star proves that the future of film lies in technology, not dragging abused animals onto movie sets. PETA is happy to celebrate Elizabeth Banks for recognizing that forcing a real bear to perform in her dark comedy would have been anything but funny.”

People are all the buzz about Cocaine Bear, and for all the right reasons. Not since Snakes on a Plane have audiences heard a title and thought, “Yes!” The difference here is Cocaine Bear is based on an insane true story. The marketing has been appropriately tongue-in-cheek, and the early word is that it’s a fun and breezy romp into one of the many examples of life being stranger than fiction.
The director of the film is comedic film actress Elizabeth Banks. This will be Banks’ third feature-length directorial effort after Pitch Perfect 2 and Charlie’s Angels. Recently, PETA has presented Banks with the “Beary Best Award.” The Award is given to Banks for her direction choice of using a human bear stand-in while filming the movie and CGI in a photorealistic bear rather than exploiting an actual bear for the performance.
