Food is a universal theme in movies, and what's great about that is the wide variety of traditions, customs, and cultures that go into making foods from around the world so different and interesting. Food is strongly tied to family all over the map, whether it's big events like weddings or a Sunday dinner, or recipes handed down through the generations. Food can also be part of seduction or used in erotic games, and it can trace the arc of a romantic relationship. Food being prepared professionally, in restaurants, always makes for high drama and it's easy to understand why professional kitchens are such frequent settings for movies and TV shows. The tension can be unbearable, but there's also camaraderie amongst the staff, and interesting bonds to be explored with the customers and (gulp) the critics.

The creative relationship between directors Tim Miller (“Deadpool”) and David Fincher goes back over a decade. The two first partnered to revive the 1980s anthology genre film “Heavy Metal,” with that project eventually evolving into the acclaimed “Love, Death + Robots.” The duo even attempted a comic book adaptation with “The Goon.” An animated film based on the Eric Powell comic book that was published by Dark Horse Comics that has been sitting in development hell for ages, despite word back in 2019 that 20th Century Studios was picking it up.

Eric Powell's comic book series "The Goon" has had a long road to the screen. David Fincher first optioned the movie rights to the title all the way back in 2008, with an eye toward directing it as an animated film. But by 2012, Fincher and voice actor Paul Giamatti made it sound like the project was having budget issues and had run out of money. "Deadpool" and "Terminator: Dark Fate" director Tim Miller later became attached to the project, with the success of the former film in 2016 making it seem like the "Goon" adaptation had been revived and had a better chance of making it...

Tim Miller revealed that his feature take of The Goon comic is being made at Netflix with Love, Death & Robots episodic filmmaker Patrick Osborne directing.
Logline: The Goon comic is about a hulking orphan raised by his aunt, a strong-woman for a carnival. When a gangster Labrazio guns down the aunt, the goon kills the gangster and takes over the operation.
Miller was happy with making Love, Death and Robots at the streamer, and made a point to land The Goon there.
Miller said he was in development on The Goon for 12 years and that the comic’s creator Eric Powell was working on the script with Osborn.
The news was made by Miller at Collider’s Directors on Directing panel in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con.
Miller reflected earlier on what went wrong with his R-rated Terminator: Dark Fate movie.

“The Goon” movie is finally, actually happening.
“Deadpool” and “Terminator: Dark Fate” filmmaker Tim Miller — who has been developing an adaptation of “The Goon” for over a decade — announced the news during Collider’s Directors on Directing panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2022.
Miller also announced that the film will be directed by Patrick Osborne, who won an Oscar for directing the Disney animated short film “Feast.” He said Osborne and comic creator Eric Powell are currently working on the adaptation.
The comic book series follows the titular character as he battles various supernatural monsters.
An adaptation of “The Goon” was first announced in 2008, to be produced by Blur Studio (founded by Miller) and David Fincher. A Kickstarter was launched in 2012, and the film was eventually set up at 20th Century Fox in 2019, only to be dropped after the Disney/Fox merger.

First, the bad: Eric Powell, the creator of cult-favorite comic The Goon, is taking a break from his indie Eisner-winning title after just putting out the latest issue (that would be issue 13, which dropped on March 10).

Back in the Spring the first issue of this book slipped out, though I don’t think its launch got quite the reception Marvel was expecting. I think it did Ok, but wasn’t a game changer as such. The book was two things. One, the start of a semi-regular companion book to the series of Marvels: Snapshots one-shots, all of which have been excellent by the way. Two, the chance for Alex Ross to finally set out his original idea that in the past had ended up as the groundbreaking Marvels book. Eric Powell’s The Goon is a one-of-a-kind comic book character, a brawny, unconstructed lug who has a dive-bar soul and an alley-fight face. This year, remarkably, is the 20th anniversary of the cult character, who has tussled along he way with ghouls, a giant squid, mobsters, mutants, deranged scientists, demons, and a pie-eating skunk ape. For the award-winning Powell, the anniversary celebration has been chance to connect with fans (with an ambitious book tour and a barrage of tie-in releases) as well as peers (through a bevy of unprecedented collaborations).
In the all-new Goon comic book series now underway, Powell has teased that he would be joined by some notable names from the comics world. For issue No. 5, which goes on sale July 31, the writing chores were divided by Powell and Thomas Sniegoski (The Fallen) while the illustrations are by Brett Parson (Tank Girl). Amy Adams and Chris Messina have a palpable chemistry in the debut episode of Sharp Objects alone. It's almost as if they've done this whole acting thing together before. Well, as it turns out, they have! Nearly a decade ago, the actors costarred in 2009's Julie & Julia, the heartwarming Nora Ephron-led movie about renowned chef Julia Child and author Julie Powell. In the movie, Messina portrays Julie's husband, Eric Powell. In the gritty HBO miniseries, Adams portrays Camille Preaker, while Messina portrays Detective Richard Willis.
After becoming friends following Julie & Julia, Messina said he was eager to work with Adams again. "I wanted another shot with Amy when I wasn't just eating her food and telling her how delicious it was," the actor told the New York Post. In fact, Adams advocated for Messina to be cast in Sharp Objects. Messina said, "I think she wanted someone around...

As Corpse Club listeners know, we're big fans of all things Alien here on Daily Dead, and like a lot of fans, we're fascinated by the production behind one of the more divisive entries in the franchise, Alien 3. In the ’80s, author William Gibson was approached to write a screenplay for the third film, and while his story never came to fruition on screen, Gibson's version will soon come to life on the paneled page in a five-issue comic book series from Johnnie Christmas and Dark Horse:
Press Release: Milwaukie, Ore.,—An Alien blockbuster is coming to a comic shop near you when Dark Horse Comics brings William Gibson’s original, unproduced Alien 3 script to life with the help of writer and artist Johnnie Christmas. While Gibson was a contributor in the early phase of the writing for Alien 3, ultimately most of his concepts never made it into the final film.

Mondo has released several new pieces of poster art for their Universal Monster tribute gallery. It features new art depicting The Mummy, Frankenstein, The Wolfman, The Bride of Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, The Creature From the Black Lagoon, and Dracula.
The Mondo Gallery has been hosting Universal Studio's classic monsters this month from Jan. 19 - Jan. 27, and this art collection is pretty incredible. There's some beautiful work here. When I look at this art for these classic horror films, It makes me sad that Universal Pictures and their team of talent don't really know how to handle these amazing characters for their Dark Universe reboot films. This is their inspiration, and they haven't been able to capture the greatness of it yet.
Mitch Putnam, Mondo creative director, had this to say in a statement:

One day in the early 80s, I was with my girlfriend in a shopping mall. Somehow I had been relegated to the role of sidekick while she shopped. I liked to do a lot of things with her, but shopping wasn’t high on that list. I was bored so I decided to buy a comic book to read while she shopped.
Back then I was enjoying a lot of comics and purchasing them every week at Kim’s Collectible Comics and Records. But one store in that mall had a spinner rack filled with comics, and I knew I could snag an issue that I had missed.
I evaluated the comics available on that rack and hoped that one would be my salvation from the dreariness of shopping. I reached out for Swamp Thing #21, and was surprised to find an unfamiliar writer wrote it. I decided to give it a try nonetheless.

Years ago, filmmaker David Fincher optioned the film rights to Eric Powell's Dark Horse comic book series "The Goon" with plans to turn it into an animated feature he would produce. Since then though the project has struggled to come together, mostly due to issues with financing.
Things seemed to pick up steam with a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2013 which went towards a feature-length story reel assembly meant to attract investors. "Deadpool" director Tim Miller has long been attached as co-director alongside Jeff Fowler and gave an update on its progress whilst speaking with Collider. Turns out in the wake of the success of "Deadpool", the project is gaining traction:
"If Deadpool shined any light in the direction of the studio, we wanna use some of that light to shine it on Goon. So we've been doing a lot of work lately, we did some voiceover last week I...
