Updated: The controversy between Jay-z’s Made in America festival and Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney’s office stepped up another notch Thursday: Desiree Perez, COO of Jay’s Roc Nation company, tells Variety that the festival, which has taken place on the city’s Benjamin Franklin Parkway every year since 2012, will be held in that iconic location in 2019, or in another city.
Earlier this week a rep for the mayor’s office told a local media outlet that the festival will have to be held elsewhere in the city in 2019 due to the costs — apparently without discussing the matter with Jay’s team first — adding that after six years, tourism has grown, so “the need for an event of this scale at this location may no longer be necessary.” In response, Jay fired off an angry op-ed that was published Wednesday in the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Hillary Clinton has a message for the millions of “awe-inspiring” women and men who marched in Washington, D.C. and in cities around the world on Saturday to protest the inauguration of President Donald Trump — keep up the good fight.
The 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, who notably attended her former opponent’s inauguration on Friday, tells People in this week’s issue that she did so “to honor democracy and its enduring values.”
“On Saturday, we watched women and men across this country and the globe stand up, speak out, and peacefully march for those values with one voice,” she continued.

Standing atop the Philadelphia Art Museum’s iconic steps, Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter proclaimed Wednesday, November 25 “Creed” Day in honor of the upcoming film – opening that same day – which explores the next chapter in the “Rocky” saga.
Creed stars Sylvester Stallone, Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson joined Mayor Nutter on Friday to receive the official proclamation. The film’s writer/director, Ryan Coogler, and producer Irwin Winkler were also on hand.
The film, which brings Rocky Balboa face-to-face with the son of his one-time rival and best friend, Apollo Creed, was shot in and around the City of Brotherly Love. The museum steps, and the statue of Rocky that stands at the bottom of them, can, in fact, be seen in Creed.

“Tonight Show” band The Roots helped Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter impress his constituents on Saturday with a performance of “Rapper’s Delight.” The politician joined Jimmy Fallon‘s friends on stage at the Philly 4th of July Jam, the Pennsylvania city’s annual Independence Day celebration, and rapped the entire song without missing a beat. He completed his performance by dropping the microphone — a stage move that elicited a huge applause from the audience. This isn’t the first time Mayor Nutter showed off his rap skills. He previously performed the track with The Roots at his second inauguration. Also read: Chris Brown,...

He was joined by The Roots. Of course, he ended the performance with a mic drop, just in case you forgot who the coolest mayor was.

Philadelphia (AP) - Actor and comedian Kevin Hart donated 500 computers to schools and recreation centers in his hometown of Philadelphia, a move that he hopes will inspire others to follow his lead.
"I am blessed to be in a position that allows me to give back to the city that made me who I am," Hart said in a statement.
Hart attended local public schools before embarking on an entertainment career that includes the 2011 stand-up special "Laugh at My Pain." He has also hosted MTV's Video Music Awards and "Saturday Night Live."
Mayor Michael Nutter joined Hart on Friday to visit four schools that collectively received 300 laptops. The district has endured severe budget cuts this year, including the closure of about two dozen schools.
"These computers will allow our students to expand their studies, explore new course material, and prepare for college and careers for years to come," Superintendent William Hite said in a statement.

Philadelphia — The city where America was made is gearing up for rapper Jay-z's "Made In America" music festival, which officials estimate will attract 100,000 fans to Philadelphia over Labor Day weekend.
Construction of stages and tents began this week at the somewhat unusual venue, a tree-lined boulevard in the heart of downtown. It's the first show on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to require paid admission. Rock stalwarts Pearl Jam are co-headliners of the two-day event.
Officials said there should be no problem handling the crowd considering the city's long tradition of staging much larger concerts at the same location.
"Every year, we have detailed plans for public safety, street access, trash removal and we successfully accommodate 400,000 to 500,000 visitors on the 4th of July," Mayor Michael Nutter said in a statement.
For those who can't make the festival on either Sept. 1 or 2, don't worry – filmmaker Ron Howard will be directing a movie about the show.

In hip-hop, where so much worth is based on the notion of maintaining street credibility, it would be easy for someone of Jay-z's stature to lose touch. James Earl Jones is to be honoured for his iconic career on the stage and screen as the recipient of the 2012 Marian Anderson Award.
The veteran actor will be presented with the prestigious prize in recognition of his "culture-changing" roles at a ceremony in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 19 November.
Announcing Jones' win, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter called the award "one of Philadelphia’s greatest cultural events" and hailed Jones as a fixture of American cinema.
Nutter says, "I certainly look forward (to his visit) both officially and, I am comfortable enough with myself to say, personally. I have always, always, always wanted to meet James Earl Jones. And I look forward to welcoming him to Philadelphia on November 19 when he arrives to accept this most-deserving award."
The prize is named after opera star and Philadelphia native Marian Anderson, who became the first black soloist at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1955.
Previous recipients include Sir Sidney Poitier, Gregory Peck, Mia Farrow, Dame Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Gere.

Jay-z has come out in support of President Obama's recent endorsement of gay marriage. In a recent interview with CNN, the rapper said he believed supporting gay marriage was "the right thing to do."
“I’ve always thought it as something that was still holding the country back,” Jay-z said, referencing the fact that same-sex marriage is not recognized nationwide. “What people do in their own homes is their business and you can choose to love whoever you love. He may have brought the Nets to Brooklyn, but this fall, he's bringing the music to Philly. Jay-z will headline and curate the first Budweiser Made in America Music Festival in Philadelphia,
The news was to be announced Monday morning but The New York Times beat Hov and Philly's Mayor Michael Nutter to the punch. Set for September 1 and 2, the festival will feature as many as 28 acts spanning a breadth genres such as rock, hip hop and jazz.
Though the lineup has not been announced (or perhaps even set), at least one act seems like a clear shoe-in. The Roots have been a part of Philadelphia's musical texture ever since their 1993 debut album, Organix.
The Jimmy Fallon house band, which of course features Questlove on the drums and Black Thought on the mic, has its own festival that takes place in the Philadelphia summer. The Roots Picnic is slated for June 2 and 3 of this year.
